Evolutionary Dynamics Of Influenza Type B In The Presence Of Vaccination: An Ecological Study, Lindsey J. Fiedler
Evolutionary Dynamics Of Influenza Type B In The Presence Of Vaccination: An Ecological Study, Lindsey J. Fiedler
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the evolutionary dynamics of influenza type B in human hosts is a public health concern as we strive to minimize the disease burden in seasonal epidemics. Vaccination is considered the best defense against contracting influenza, and everyone over the age of 6 months is advised to get vaccinated before each season. The effect that vaccine-acquired immunity has on the evolution of influenza B remains unclear. In the U.S., vaccine-uptake is irregular across the states, and the differing coverages present an opportunity to study how vaccination influences viral evolution. This thesis analyzes the evolutionary patterns of influenza B in the …
Demographic Predictors And Reasons For Chronic Absenteeism Amongst Secondary Students With Disabilities, Cashea Holyfield
Demographic Predictors And Reasons For Chronic Absenteeism Amongst Secondary Students With Disabilities, Cashea Holyfield
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Many students in secondary schools are increasingly impacted by chronic absenteeism. Researchers have consistently concluded that students who are chronically absent are likely to experience negative outcomes such as difficulties in academic achievement, learning, sociability, and mental health (London, Sanchez, & Castrechini, 2016). However, despite the implications of chronic absenteeism, research studies that primarily focus on assessing students with disabilities’ (SWDs) reasons for chronic absenteeism are relatively limited. Although there is some existing research that suggests that SWDs are frequently absent due to health-related reasons, transportation issues, and their perceptions of poor school climate (Erbstein, 2014; Humm-Brundage, Castillo, & Batsche, …
Exploring Young Women’S Choice To Initiate Use Of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception: A Mixed Methods Approach, Helen Mahony
Exploring Young Women’S Choice To Initiate Use Of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception: A Mixed Methods Approach, Helen Mahony
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background: The United States has the highest rate of unintended pregnancy compared to any other developed country. Unintended pregnancy is associated with negative health outcomes for both parents and children. It is estimated that government expenditures for unintended pregnancy total $21 billion each year. Women ages 18-25 years old have the highest rate of unintended pregnancy. This age group is categorized as emerging adulthood, and this is a unique developmental period in a person’s life. Given the high rate of unintended pregnancies and the associated negative outcomes, increasing the use of more reliable methods of birth control is a public …
Threats To Teaching: An Investigation Into The Constructs Of Compassion Fatigue In The Classroom, April M. Steen
Threats To Teaching: An Investigation Into The Constructs Of Compassion Fatigue In The Classroom, April M. Steen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A group of suburban/rural general and special education teachers (n = 260) responded to an electronic survey. The survey was designed to measure the prevalence of an under researched area of compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction among teachers working in suburban/rural public schools. The current study hypothesized that the relationship among compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction, demographic variables, and teacher stress factors (time management, discipline, motivation, professional distress, and professional investment) would correlate with an increase in compassion fatigue (burnout and secondary traumatic stress) for general and special education teachers working in suburban/rural public schools; furthermore, it predicted a positive correlation …

Quantifying The Friedreich Ataxia Rating Scale And The Functional Performance Measures, Chelsea Rene Davis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Friedreich Ataxia (FA) is a debilitating autosomal-recessive neurodegenerative disorder which is characterized by ataxia of all four limbs, difficulty walking, areflexia, and dysarthria. Further complications of FA include diabetes, scoliosis, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Approximately three-quarters of people with FA have onset before the age of 25 and in most instances, affected individuals will require the use of a wheelchair within ten years after symptoms emerge.
The current advancements in clinical trials have escalated the developmental demand for a scale which validates adjustments in FA. The Friedreich Ataxia Rating Scale (FARS) is a disease-specific semi-qualitative assessment which includes three subscales (functional …
Prioritizing Rehabilitation Of Sanitary Sewers In Pinellas County, Fl, Jesse T. Hillman
Prioritizing Rehabilitation Of Sanitary Sewers In Pinellas County, Fl, Jesse T. Hillman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Following large rain events, extraneous freshwater contributions known as inflow and infiltration (I/I) bypass the storm sewer and enter the sanitary sewer system. In areas with a high water table, like Pinellas County and the surrounding Tampa Bay area, a majority of the wastewater infrastructure is submerged year round exacerbating the rate of groundwater infiltration. This excess flow overloads the existing wastewater infrastructure leading to sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs). These SSOs result in serious problems for municipalities and utilities across the country.
This study was performed in order to assist Pinellas County Utilities in rehabilitating their southern sewer system. To …
"It's Not Addiction Until You Graduate": Natural Recovery In The College Context, Breanne I. Casper
"It's Not Addiction Until You Graduate": Natural Recovery In The College Context, Breanne I. Casper
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Natural recovery is inhibition or moderation of problematic substance use without employing the use of formal addiction services. A neuroanthropological approach to natural recovery highlights the importance of both social and biological aspects of achieving this "self" led process of change. Throughout this project I take a critical anthropological approach to natural recovery, which explores a more holistic conception and historically situated view of current natural recovery theory. This research project employs a neuroanthropological perspective to assess how college students perform natural recovery. Using ethnographic methods, which highlight the social and physical experience of moderation, I discuss how students negotiate …
Effect Of Hyperoxia On Type-1 Diabetic Mouse Model, Samuel Ignatious Bolleddu
Effect Of Hyperoxia On Type-1 Diabetic Mouse Model, Samuel Ignatious Bolleddu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Administration of Hyperoxia (>90 % oxygen) is a pervasive intervention to supplement respiratory needs in patients admitted in ICU/critical care units. Current literature suggests that prolonged use of Hyperoxia therapy is directly associated with in-hospital mortality. The exact reason for this high mortality under Hyperoxia is unknown. Recent explorations in Dr. Panguluri lab identified that dysregulation of Kv channels plays a vital role in the pathophysiology of Hyperoxia-induced pulmonary and cardiac complications using animal models. The proposed research will focus on the part of Hyperoxia in generating cardiotoxicity and ventricular remodeling in the type-1 diabetes patients using the Akita, …
Using Predicted Heat Strain To Evaluate Sustainable Exposures, Samantha L. Thacker
Using Predicted Heat Strain To Evaluate Sustainable Exposures, Samantha L. Thacker
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The most commonly used exposure assessment for heat stress is based on Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), and the limits are based on empirical relationships that demonstrate a sustainable exposure. The ISO 7933 (2017) describes Predicted Heat Strain (PHS), which is a rational model for heat stress assessment that is used to assess time-limited exposures. Investigators have examined PHS validity under a variety of time-limited conditions. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate if PHS can predict sustainable exposures.
The data used for this study were from two previous heat stress studies using a progressive heat stress protocol. The …

Measuring Flowering Phenology And Its Consequences: A Systematic Review, Samantha M. Mangum
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite growing interest in flowering phenology among ecologists, as reflected by an increase in the number of papers, there is little information on how studies typically measure and describe a plant’s flowering phenology. The focus of this study was the literature on flowering phenology and the approaches researchers have taken to quantify flowering phenology. Initially, a comprehensive description of the breath of literature on flowering phenology was produced. From there, I described the current research on flowering phenology: the year that the studies were published, the locations of the studies, and the particular biomes where the studies were performed. The …

Disentangling The Impact Of Poor Sleep From Depressive Symptoms On Emotion Regulation, Kimberly O'Leary
Disentangling The Impact Of Poor Sleep From Depressive Symptoms On Emotion Regulation, Kimberly O'Leary
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Depressive symptoms and sleep are both strongly associated with deficits in emotional functioning (Durmer & Dinges, 2005; van der Helm & Walker, 2010). Although sleep and depression are tightly intertwined, understanding their independent and conjoint impact on emotional functioning is imperative. Given the limitations of previous designs, the primary goal of this study was to examine the separate impact of poor sleep quality and depressive symptoms on emotion regulation. In order to accomplish this goal, we preselected groups on the basis of their sleep and depression profiles: individuals with mainly sleep problems (N = 30), individuals with mainly depressive symptoms …
Neuro-Correlates Of Word Processing Among Four-And-Five-Year-Old Children From Homes Varying In Socio-Economic Status, Wendy Olsen
Neuro-Correlates Of Word Processing Among Four-And-Five-Year-Old Children From Homes Varying In Socio-Economic Status, Wendy Olsen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A large body of research relates families’ socioeconomic status (SES) to child language development (Hoff & Tian, 2005). Results from these studies indicate preschoolers from low SES backgrounds may have underdeveloped linguistic foundations required for future academic success (Sirin, 2005; Lacouri & Tissington, 2011). These differences have been said to create a 30 million word-gap between the language experiences of low and middle to high SES children by the age of 3 years. Thus, children who come from lower SES backgrounds often lack the vocabulary knowledge used in school and in textbooks (Hart & Risley, 1995). One index of SES …

Functional Porous Materials: Applications For Environmental Sustainability, Briana Amaris Aguila
Functional Porous Materials: Applications For Environmental Sustainability, Briana Amaris Aguila
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Resource depletion, clean water shortages, and global climate change have led to environmental sustainability being of primary concern for both governmental and industrial practices. Current methods to address these challenges typically come as a double-edged sword, fixing one problem while contributing to another. As introduced in chapter one of this dissertation, adsorbent materials are seen as a promising alternative remediation system due to their low energy consumption and minimal chemical waste production. However, many traditional adsorbents, such as activated carbon, metal oxides, and resins, are hindered in practice. This is because they lack the structural tunability to have long-term effectiveness …

Using A Stress Process Model To Examine Longitudinal Racial Differences In Well-Being And Health: Results From A Population-Based Study Of Caregiving, Adrian N. S. Badana
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As the older adult population of the United States increases over the next decade, many family caregivers will be needed to provide care for aging loved ones. The growing diversity of the population may also mean that more racial/ethnic minority caregivers will be providing care to older family members. Most of the studies examining race and caregiving have focused on racial differences in stress, coping, well-being and health among White and Black family caregivers. However, previous research examining racial differences in caregiving has often been limited to smaller convenience samples of caregivers, which limit generalizability of study findings. In this …

Contribution Of Retrotransposons To Breast Cancer Malignancy, Isaac D. Raplee
Contribution Of Retrotransposons To Breast Cancer Malignancy, Isaac D. Raplee
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The components contributing to cancer progression, especially the transition from early to invasive are unknown. Consequently, the biological reasons are unclear as to why some patients diagnosed with atypia and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) never progress into invasive breast cancer. The “one gene at a time” approach does not sufficiently predict progression. To elucidate the early stage progression to invasive ductal cancer, expression signature of transcripts and transposable elements in micropunched samples of formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue was conducted. A bioinformatics pipeline to analyze poor quality, short reads (>36 nts) from RNA-Seq data was created to compare …
Mobilizing Images Of Black Pain And Death Through Digital Media: Visual Claims To Collective Identity After “I Can’T Breathe”, Aryn Kelly
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the wake of Eric Garner’s 2014 public execution at the hands of NYPD officers, online spaces such as Twitter saw an influx of remediated imagery referencing Ramsey Orta’s bystander cell phone video of Garner’s death. These images often explicitly reference the chokehold that killed Garner and/or they reappropriate Garner’s last words: “I can’t breathe.” To what formal dimensions in Orta’s video are these remediated images responding? What broader cultural work is the creation of these images doing?
In this project, I regard Orta’s video as the point of entry for considering the cultural work of remediating images from it, …

Objectives: 1) To explore whether health information barriers are associated with weight status, cigarette use, and alcohol use among cancer survivors, 2) To explore the moderating role of race and ethnicity …
In Defense Of The “Forgotten Man”: The Sustained Legacy Of The Southern Strategy On The Post-Reagan Era Presidency, Stephanie Lynn Williams
In Defense Of The “Forgotten Man”: The Sustained Legacy Of The Southern Strategy On The Post-Reagan Era Presidency, Stephanie Lynn Williams
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Political and historical literature largely attributes the political development of the Southern Strategy to the 1964 Barry Goldwater and 1968 Richard Nixon presidential campaigns. The Southern Strategy is commonly explained as the Republican Party’s 1964 campaign decision to abandon Black voters in the North to expand its national political base of support by seeking White voters outside of the South who were angry with the political advancements of the Civil Rights Movement (Aistrup 1996, 5; Bass and DeVries 1976, 27). Discussions of Ronald Reagan’s role in the development of the Southern Strategy describe him more as a beneficiary rather than …
