The Concept Of Freedom In American Literature At The Dawn Of The Nation, Mykhailo Pylynskyi Feb 2020

The Concept Of Freedom In American Literature At The Dawn Of The Nation, Mykhailo Pylynskyi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes American literature dedicated to the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) and the events which led to it. The overarching goal of the analysis is to lay out a coherent account of the concept of freedom in American literature of that time period. To reach this goal I will use The Second Treatise of Government by John Locke as a main philosophical text, which outlines the key elements of political freedom. As the main literature pieces of the selected time period, Common Sense by Thomas Paine and The Liberty Song were chosen. I will also use multiple songs by …

Microfluidically Reconfigurable Millimeter-Wave Switches, Antenna Arrays And Filters With Fast-Actuation Using Movable Metallized Plates And Integrated Actuation, Enrique J. Gonzalez Carvajal Feb 2020

Microfluidically Reconfigurable Millimeter-Wave Switches, Antenna Arrays And Filters With Fast-Actuation Using Movable Metallized Plates And Integrated Actuation, Enrique J. Gonzalez Carvajal

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Microfluidic reconfiguration of microwave devices has emerged as a potentially attractive alternative to integrated semiconductor (ICs/MMICs) and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based technologies. On the one hand, MMICs suffer from low power handling capabilities, high IL, non-linear effects, and elevated costs; on the other hand, MEMS are limited by their complex packaging requirements, and relatively low reliability from stiction-based effects. However, microfluidic reconfiguration provides low insertion loss (IL) due to its mechanical nature and it is not limited by power saturation effects. These attributes are especially valuable for applications at mm-waves, potentially reducing costs and increasing power efficiency capabilities. Microfluidic reconfiguration …

Threat-Induced Alterations In Cognition And Associations With Disinhibited Behavior, Julia B. Mcdonald Feb 2020

Threat-Induced Alterations In Cognition And Associations With Disinhibited Behavior, Julia B. Mcdonald

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

When a threat is detected, brain networks associated with threat processing are activated while other processes are deprioritized. While this resource allocation is adaptive, it makes it especially difficult to effortfully direct thoughts, emotions, and behaviors (use cognitive control) during situations of high stress. Further, this threat response is most efficient in response to short-term or predictable stressors (“threats”) but loses its efficiency for ambiguous or unpredictable threats. Despite research that suggests that threat induces psychological states associated with breakdown in cognitive control processes, no study has directly examined how predictability of threat impacts neurocognitive indicators of cognitive control processes. …

Identifying Barriers And Facilitators To Improve Hepatitis C Virus Screening, Linh M. Duong

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Background: Birth cohort hepatitis C Virus (HCV) screening recommendations were issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Despite this, studies have reported low HCV screening rates. Currently, the prevalence of HCV screening rates nationally is unknown and there are no in-depth studies that have evaluated the barriers or facilitators of HCV screening. Our study aimed to fill this gap by 1) conducting a systematic literature review to assess the national HCV screening prevalence, 2) evaluating temporal trends in HCV screening using a large academic …

Evaluation Of Optimal Technique For Left Breast Irradiation, Amitpal Singh Saini Feb 2020

Evaluation Of Optimal Technique For Left Breast Irradiation, Amitpal Singh Saini

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Numerous studies have indicated that radiation therapy reduces the risk of the local recurrence of breast cancer in several cases and that it has increased the overall survival rate. Although radiation therapy is beneficial for the treatment of breast cancer, it is known to increase the risk of both radiation toxicity and secondary breast cancer. In left-sided breast cancer, radiation therapy treatment often leads to the heart and its components—such as the left ventricle and left anterior descending artery—being exposed to high doses of radiation because of the proximity of the heart to the left breast, resulting in cardiac complications …

Targeting Cancer-Anorexia Cachexia Syndrome And Septic Inflammatory-Based Atrophy With R/S 1,3 Butanediol Acetoacetate Diester, Andrew P. Koutnik

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cancer anorexia cachexia syndrome (CACS) is a distinct atrophy disease negatively influencing multiple aspects of clinical care and patient quality of life. Although it directly causes 20% of all cancer-related deaths, there are currently no model systems that encompass the entire multifaceted syndrome, nor are there any effective therapeutic treatments. Here, we show that the VM-M3 mouse model of systemic metastasis demonstrates a novel, immunocompetent, logistically feasible, repeatable phenotype with progressive tumor growth, spontaneous metastatic spread, and the full multifaceted CACS with expected sex dimorphisms across tissue wasting. We also demonstrate that the ubiquitin proteasomal degradation pathway was significantly upregulated …

People With Parkinson’S And Care Partners Of Pwps’ Uncertainty Management Through Information Strategies, Amy Haywood Jan 2020

People With Parkinson’S And Care Partners Of Pwps’ Uncertainty Management Through Information Strategies, Amy Haywood

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores how people with Parkinson’s (PwP) and care partners of PwP manage the uncertainty surrounding Parkinson’s disease (PD). PD causes both motor and cognitive decline in patients, which may affect each individual differently (Williamson, Simpson, & Murray, 2008). There is no-known cure or cause for PD, meaning it is shrouded in uncertainty from the first symptom to the ongoing management process. This disease also affects care partners because of its variability in symptoms and progression. For this reason, this research, which is part of a larger study, interviewed both care partners of PwP (n= 10) and those diagnosed …

An Exploration Of Teachers’ Use Of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, Ethic Of Care, And Reflectivity, Johan Von Ancken Jan 2020

An Exploration Of Teachers’ Use Of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, Ethic Of Care, And Reflectivity, Johan Von Ancken

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A variety of educational reform literature discusses the “ethic of care” and “building relationships,” along with culturally relevant/responsive pedagogy (Gorski, 2013; Guajardo, M., Guajardo F., & Casaperalta, 2008; Ladson-Billings, 1992, 1995). In addition, “Appreciative Organizing in Education (AOE)” (Barrett & Fry, 2008; Burello, Beitz, & Mann, 2015; Cooperrider, Whitney, & Stavros, 2008) with its emphasis on strengths-based analysis of organizational change shaped my perception that a “Culture of Care” in our schools and with our teachers, administrators, and most importantly students, is necessary.

The notion of “culturally appropriate” (Au & Jordan, 1981, p. 139) pedagogy began over 35 years ago …

The Effect Of Acute Interpersonal Racial Discrimination On Smoking Motivation And Behavior Among Black Smokers, Patricia F. Calixte-Civil

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In comparison to White smokers, Black smokers are more likely to report both discrimination and less success in smoking cessation. No previous study has tested the causal relationship between actual experienced racial discrimination and smoking variables associated with cessation. The goal of this study was to test the casual influence of interpersonal racial discrimination on smoking motivation (i.e., the urge to smoke cigarettes, cessation self-efficacy, and smoking behavior) using a controlled experimental design. We used a virtual ball-playing game to create a laboratory model of racial discrimination. A 2x2 between-subjects factorial design (inclusion/exclusion vs. ingroup/outgroup) was used to randomly assign …

Affect And Craving: Examining The Differential Influences Of Positive And Negative Affect On Inclinations To Approach And Avoid Alcohol Use, Jacob A. Levine Jan 2020

Affect And Craving: Examining The Differential Influences Of Positive And Negative Affect On Inclinations To Approach And Avoid Alcohol Use, Jacob A. Levine

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Most research examining the role of affect in the etiology of alcohol craving has been limited to associations between negative affect and the desire to consume alcohol. This narrow focus has not only ignored the potential influence of positive affect on the desire to use alcohol, but has led to a failure to consider both desires to avoid using alcohol and motivational conflicts often thought to be present in alcohol use disorders (AUDs). Additionally, research investigating the influence of affect on attentional bias in favor of alcohol cues in individuals who have an AUD has been limited. Using 60 individuals …

Algorithms Enabling Communications In The Presence Of Adjacent Channel Interference, Berker Peköz Jan 2020

Algorithms Enabling Communications In The Presence Of Adjacent Channel Interference, Berker Peköz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Newer cellular communication generations are planned to allow asynchronous transmission of multiple numerologies (waveforms with different parameters) in adjacent bands, creating unavoidable adjacent channel interference (ACI). Contemporary windowed-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (W-OFDM) algorithms have limited ACI rejection capability under high delay spread and small fast Fourier transformation (FFT) sizes. CP is designed to be longer than the maximum excess delay (MED) of the channel to accommodate such algorithms in current standards. Most prior work on windowing assume additional extensions reserved for windowing, which does

not comply with standards. The robustness of these algorithms can only be improved against these conditions …

Perfectionism, Negative Life Events, And Cognitive Appraisal: A Contextual Model Of Perfectionism’S Maladaptive Nature, Ansley M. Bender

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Perfectionism is highly (Grzegorek, Slaney, Franze, & Rice, 2004; Rice, Ashby, & Gilman, 2011) and increasingly (Curran & Hill, 2017) prevalent. Alarmingly, perfectionism is associated with various concerning correlates and outcomes, including suicide ideation and attempts (e.g. Smith, Sherry, et al., 2018). Whereas it is clear that perfectionism presents as a vulnerability for suicide, very little is known about when its maladaptive features may be particularly activated or by what pathway such a relationship exists. A preliminary, but underdeveloped, area of research suggests a role for negative life events in potentiating the effects of perfectionism, operating under the assumption that …
