Impact Of Grain Morphology On The Temporal Evolution Of Interfacial Area During Multi-Phase Flow In Porous Media, Fizza Zahid
Impact Of Grain Morphology On The Temporal Evolution Of Interfacial Area During Multi-Phase Flow In Porous Media, Fizza Zahid
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Many environmental issues deal with the movement of immiscible fluids in the subsurface, e.g., cleanup of oil spills and geological carbon dioxide sequestration. Engineers face a constant challenge to improve the efficiency of these processes. This can be facilitated by studying the underlying physics of how fluids flow and interact in these systems.
Traditionally, lab experiments can provide reliable information about fluid architecture in porous medium, such as trapped fluid volumes and contact area between two immiscible fluids (interfacial area). However, these methods can be expensive and tedious. A well designed numerical experiment is not only able to describe fluid …

Educators’ Sensemaking Of Data Within An Mtss Framework: An Exploratory Case Study, Stephanie Marie Green
Educators’ Sensemaking Of Data Within An Mtss Framework: An Exploratory Case Study, Stephanie Marie Green
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine how educators working within a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) framework make sense of data, how they use data for instructional decision-making, and how the data use cultures at the district and school levels influence this data use. The study was designed with a theoretical framework informed by the sensemaking about student outcomes model (Bertrand & Marsh, 2015), the data literacy for teaching framework (Mandinach & Gummer, 2016c), and the data use cultures framework (Firestone & Gonzales, 2007). I explored these issues through a case study methodology, utilizing semi-structured interviews, observations, document …

Educational Experiences Of Congolese Refugees In West-Central Florida High Schools, Michaela J. Inks
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Since 2016, refugees from the Congo Wars (RFCWs) have been one of the largestpopulations of refugees resettled in the United States. High-school aged RFCW students are, however, dropping out of Florida public high schools are alarmingly high rates. This study uses ethnographic methods such as interviews and participant observation to investigate educational challenges experienced by RFCW youth. This study has three objectives: to learn more about refugees with discontinuous education and the barriers to graduating from public high schools after resettlement; to better understand Tampa bay area programs that serve culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students; and to use ethnographic …
Corrosion Rate Prediction In Frp-Concrete Repair, Mohammad A. Khawaja
Corrosion Rate Prediction In Frp-Concrete Repair, Mohammad A. Khawaja
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research has proven that wrapping structural elements with fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) slows down chloride-induced corrosion rate but does not stop it. Although FRP has been used for corrosion repair for over 40 years, predictive corrosion rate models for FRP-concrete systems are limited in literature. This dissertation presents an oxygen diffusion-based predictive framework to estimate corrosion rate in FRP-concrete systems.
The dissertation has three main components. First, a core framework that is referred to as Khawaja-Sen-Bhethanabotla (KSB) model. In the KSB model, statistical methods were used to extend experimental data on oxygen permeation coefficients. These data were for one and two …
Power System Optimization Methods: Convex Relaxation And Benders Decomposition, Minyue Ma
Power System Optimization Methods: Convex Relaxation And Benders Decomposition, Minyue Ma
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Power system optimization methods are wildly used to solve power system problems. Engineers adopt different methods to keep the reliability and efficiency of the power system operation, planning and control. This dissertation focuses on the application and implementation of two optimization methods: Convex relaxation and Benders' decomposition.
The first part of the dissertation focuses on the application of convex relaxation to solve Alternating Current Optimal Power Flow (ACOPF) problems. In the completed work, a 3-node cycle based sparse convex relaxation is proposed to solve ACOPF problems. This method adds virtual lines in minimal chordless cycles to decompose each of them …
Hegel And Schelling: The Emptiness Of Emptiness And The Love Of The Divine, Sean B. Gleason
Hegel And Schelling: The Emptiness Of Emptiness And The Love Of The Divine, Sean B. Gleason
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I argue that, all appearances to the contrary, Hegel does not attempt to achieve a complete systematization of reason in a self-reflexive sense in his system of philosophy. Quite the opposite, I maintain that the absolute Idea is the actuality of the self-transcendence of the divine. Along these lines, I argue (in agreement with Slavoj Žižek) that the absolute “Idea” is non-total and incomplete; in this sense, Hegel is neither a modern thinker nor a post-modern thinker, but rather he presents a version of thinking that is both modern and post-modern, while neither merely one nor the …
Efficient Post-Quantum And Compact Cryptographic Constructions For The Internet Of Things, Rouzbeh Behnia
Efficient Post-Quantum And Compact Cryptographic Constructions For The Internet Of Things, Rouzbeh Behnia
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
IoT systems often rely on low-end devices to send measurements to other parties and depending on the setting, unauthorized alteration and/or privacy violation of these measures can have catastrophic consequences (e.g., embedded medical sensors). Therefore, providing efficient authentication, integrity, and confidentiality in these settings is vital. While conventional cryptographic measures (e.g., ECDSA) can be used to meet these security requirements, despite their elegant design, they are often too computationally expensive for low-end devices. This is further exacerbated when security against quantum computers is taken into the account.
In this dissertation, we propose a series of new efficient conventional and post-quantum …

Racialized Morality: The Logic Of Anti-Trafficking Advocacy, Sophie Elizabeth James
Racialized Morality: The Logic Of Anti-Trafficking Advocacy, Sophie Elizabeth James
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
How race shapes the lenses that anti-trafficking advocates use to promote client interests is critical to the successful reintegration of survivors and their access to the right resources. Any threat to rapport building can have adverse effects to the recovery of survivors. Cultural oppression (or the denial of racism) when considering micro-level interactions of anti-trafficking advocates and survivors, not only compounds victims’ trauma but creates the reality where black and brown bodies continue to be violated and victimized.
Due to these nuanced tensions at the intersection of race and gender, my thesis research examines whether and to what extent anti-trafficking …

Mental Illness Diagnosis And The Construction Of Stigma, Katie Lynn Walkup
Mental Illness Diagnosis And The Construction Of Stigma, Katie Lynn Walkup
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores how mental health legislation and related policy documents contribute to identification, diagnosis, and stigmatization. Using a mixed methods approach including content and stylometric text analysis with R as a heuristic for close and critical reading, I demonstrate how these documents normalize mental health concerns as a public threat. To do this work, I analyze how the Florida Mental Health Act (Chapter 394) and the Florida Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act (SB 7026) circulate and sustain dominant narratives about mental illness. I trace where these narratives are distributed into Florida school districts’ mandatory mental health …
Increasing Personal And Product Influence Through Background Auditory And Visual Cues, Zhihao Yu
Increasing Personal And Product Influence Through Background Auditory And Visual Cues, Zhihao Yu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Effective persuasion is indispensable for success in business and in life. People may have the best idea, the best product, and the best policy, but without persuading their target audiences to take actions, none of those would matter. However, getting people to say “Yes” is becoming harder and harder. We are living in a complicated world that is busy and crowded with too much information. People are getting more used to processing information in an automatic way and not bothering to scrutinize every bit of information. As a result, companies and individuals have fewer chances to influence their audiences through …

Impacts Of Experiential Learning On The Affective Domain: Gaining Insight Into How To Broaden Participation In The Geosciences, Meghan Lindsey Cook
Impacts Of Experiential Learning On The Affective Domain: Gaining Insight Into How To Broaden Participation In The Geosciences, Meghan Lindsey Cook
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Experiential learning exercises, such as field trips, are a common pedagogical practice in geoscience curriculums. Their purpose is to facilitate the transfer of knowledge gained in a classroom or lab setting into a field setting, but can be considered a barrier for entry into the geosciences for those with disabilities, caregiver/employment responsibilities, or financial constraints. Educators have begun turned to other modalities, such as virtual field experiences (VFEs), to create a more inclusive environment in the geosciences. However, the validity of VFEs as a replacement for, or augmentation to traditional field trips has yet to be established. The cognitive domain …
Self-Protection In Cyberspace: Assessing The Processual Relationship Between Thoughtfully Reflective Decision Making, Protection Motivation Theory, Cyber Hygiene, And Victimization, C. Jordan Howell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The current study, using structural equation modeling, assesses the processual relationship between thoughtfully reflective decision making (TRDM), theoretical constructs derived from protection motivation theory (PMT), cyber hygiene, and online victimization to determine the cognitive decision-making process that leads to the adoption of online self-protective behaviors, which reduces the occurrence of victimization experiences. Findings, derived from a general sample of Internet users in the United States, reveal: (1) engagement in cyber hygiene practices, as a form of target hardening, decreases Internet users’ experiences with online victimization; (2) thoughtfully reflective decision makers, in the face of cyber threats, develop higher threat appraisals …

Evaluating The Use Of An Interdependent Group Contingency In Online Graduate Courses To Increase Engagement, Tiana Evans
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Enrollment in online academic programs has increased substantially in recent years (Allen & Seaman, 2011) and is especially relevant due to the COVID-19 pandemic (Khalil et al., 2020). Peer interaction and engagement opportunities are strategies associated with course satisfaction, test performance, and grades and should be incorporated into online courses (Conaway et al. 2005). Group contingencies have been commonly studied in face-to-face classrooms and have been found to be effective intervention in changing target behavior in elementary and secondary education settings (Barrish et al., 1969; Deshais et al., 2019; Harris & Sherman, 1973; Mitchell et al. 2015; Wiskow et al., …
Moving Science To Practice: Exploring Implementation Practice Capacity In Community Settings, Enya B. Vroom
Moving Science To Practice: Exploring Implementation Practice Capacity In Community Settings, Enya B. Vroom
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Due to the significant prevalence of mental and substance use disorders in the United States, the push for the development and implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs) has grown exponentially in the last 30 years. Community-based organizations (CBOs) (i.e., self-governing and/or not-for profit) have been identified as significant providers of behavioral health services. However, there are gaps in the literature surrounding CBO implementation capacity, meaning their ability to adopt, implement, and sustain EBPs. There is a need for more research examining capacity training initiatives that specifically target CBOs and implementation practice. The purpose of this dissertation research was to investigate how …

Efficient Hardware Constructions For Error Detection Of Post-Quantum Cryptographic Schemes, Alvaro Cintas Canto
Efficient Hardware Constructions For Error Detection Of Post-Quantum Cryptographic Schemes, Alvaro Cintas Canto
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Quantum computers are presumed to be able to break nearly all public-key encryption algorithms used today. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) started the process of soliciting and standardizing one or more quantum computer resistant public-key cryptographic algorithms in late 2017. It is estimated that the current and last phase of the standardization process will last till 2022-2024. Among those candidates, code-based and multivariate-based cryptography are a promising solution for thwarting attacks based on quantum computers. Nevertheless, although code-based and multivariate-based cryptography, e.g., McEliece, Niederreiter, and Luov cryptosystems, have good error correction capabilities, research has shown their hardware …

"Duck Wars": Examining The Narrative Construction Of A "Problem" Species, Jenna A. Bateman
"Duck Wars": Examining The Narrative Construction Of A "Problem" Species, Jenna A. Bateman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The problematization of non-human animals occurs through a process of claimsmaking that constructs certain species as “problems”. My thesis examines the news narrative constructions of the Muscovy duck in Florida and Texas. I use a narrative analysis to examine the themes through which news narratives make claims in their construction of the “duck wars” in Florida and Texas. In the “duck wars”, the problematization of the Muscovy occurs through a set of claims made about the species by the reporters and residents in Florida and Texas neighborhoods. There are also sets of claims about other groups associated with the species, …
The Value Of Sleep: Aura And Aesthetics Of Cohabitation In Juha Lilja's Revision Of Warhol, Christopher Costabile
The Value Of Sleep: Aura And Aesthetics Of Cohabitation In Juha Lilja's Revision Of Warhol, Christopher Costabile
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis positions Juha Lilja’s 2013 digital video work, Sleep, as a prime example of what the author terms an “aesthetics of cohabitation” — a newly suggested method of artistic creation set in opposition to capitalist society’s commodification of both space and time, represented here through the work of Robert Hassan and Jonathan Crary. Lilja’s eight-hour-long video work, which is accessible on YouTube, is a reimagining and re-envisioning of Andy Warhol’s film of the same name. It subverts the intended function of digital streaming platforms while using digital technology to meet aesthetic criteria in shot length and overall duration, which …

Longitudinal Trajectory Tracking Analysis For Autonomous Electric Vehicles Based On Pid Control, Hossein Amiri
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The implementation of autonomous vehicles has huge potential for revolutionizing transportation as we currently know it. All use cases of autonomous vehicles require the vehicle to travel on a pre-specified path. Accurate tracking of this defined trajectory is a crucial aspect of the implementation of autonomous vehicles; a controller system is required to translate this pre- defined trajectory in the form of the throttle, brake, and steering inputs. This project covers the application of a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller to achieve longitudinal trajectory tracking of autonomous electric vehicles with stability and accuracy in the CARLA autonomous driving simulation platform. The implemented …
Prediction Of The Effects Of Turbulence On Vehicle Hydroplaning Using A Numerical Model, Thathsarani Dilini Herath Herath Mudiyanselage
Prediction Of The Effects Of Turbulence On Vehicle Hydroplaning Using A Numerical Model, Thathsarani Dilini Herath Herath Mudiyanselage
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Pneumatic hydroplaning has been identified as one of the major causes of wet weathertraffic accidents. Therefore, knowledge of potential hydroplaning speeds is crucial in designing roadways to reduce crash risks. It has been shown that the tire inflation pressure is the predominant factor affecting the hydroplaning speed while factors such as the water film thickness also contribute heavily to this phenomenon. Extensive research has been directed at the development of accurate models to predict the effects of vehicle characteristics, pavement conditions and water film thickness on hydroplaning. Current literature does not indicate any studies directed at understanding the effects of …
The Mass Is The Medium: Marshall Mcluhan And Roman Catholic Liturgical Change, Ashil D. Manohar
The Mass Is The Medium: Marshall Mcluhan And Roman Catholic Liturgical Change, Ashil D. Manohar
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The liturgical changes of Vatican II sought to bring a period of renewal to the Catholic laity by encouraging active participation and making the Mass more simple to understand. However, the time after the Council was characterized by confusion and disengagement by the laity. I will be discussing three significant changes to the liturgy at this time, The change from Latin to the vernacular, the change in the orientation of the altar and priest, and the change in acoustics, sound, and music. I will be examining all of these changes through the media theory of Marshall McLuhan, famous for coining …
Bait-And-Kill: Targeting A Novel Heme Biochemical Pathway In Hundreds Of Cancers, Christopher G. Marinescu
Bait-And-Kill: Targeting A Novel Heme Biochemical Pathway In Hundreds Of Cancers, Christopher G. Marinescu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cancer cells are characterized by their ability to grow and proliferate in rates that far exceed normal cells by modifying their iron/heme metabolisms to levels higher than normal. This imbalance of heme biosynthesis can lead to cancer cells having a flux of heme intermediates to the point where they enter a state called heme-overdrive. Heme-overdrive is a process unique to a variety of cancers but absent in normal tissues. With this enhanced production, heme can act as an epigenic regulator for signaling proliferation (18). Through the novel strategy called ‘bait-and-kill,’ cancer cells will be coerced into a state of heme …
