Phishing In Dark Waters: A Quasi-Experimental Approach With Evaluating Cyber-Security Training For End-Users, Jaclyn Martin Mar 2019

Phishing In Dark Waters: A Quasi-Experimental Approach With Evaluating Cyber-Security Training For End-Users, Jaclyn Martin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With the increasing amount of digital storage of personal and organizational data, there has been an increasing number of cyber-attacks, which has spurred much research on how to reduce phishing susceptibility. However, there are several gaps in the current research. There is little research on the effectiveness of different interventions on phishing susceptibility. There is no research on the differential impact of interventions on sensitivity (ability to detect phishing emails) and response bias (propensity to treat emails as threatening) or the influence of individual characteristics on phishing email training success. This study addresses these gaps using a quasi-experimental approach to …

Increasing The Supply Of The Missing Middle Housing Types In Walkable Urban Core Neighborhoods: Risk, Risk Reduction And Capital, Shrimatee Ojah Maharaj Mar 2019

Increasing The Supply Of The Missing Middle Housing Types In Walkable Urban Core Neighborhoods: Risk, Risk Reduction And Capital, Shrimatee Ojah Maharaj

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is a low supply of the missing middle housing types (MMH) in walkable urban core neighborhoods. That is, a variety of compact low- to mid-rise housing in walkable areas that are accessible to entertainment, recreational and other amenities. The largest demographic, the millennials, followed by the baby boomers, prefer the MMH types. The MMH types is a new name for a variety of compact housing types that existed in traditional neighborhoods in urban areas pre-World War II. However, due to changes in housing preferences after World War II, the requisite land use and zoning changes facilitated larger single-family homes …

Estimating Coastal Water Turbidity Using Viirs Nighttime Measurement, Chih-Wei Huang Mar 2019

Estimating Coastal Water Turbidity Using Viirs Nighttime Measurement, Chih-Wei Huang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Coastal water turbidity is a key environmental factor that influences the relative clarity of the water, which therefore reduces sunlight penetration. The comprehensive spatial and temporal coverage of remote sensing allows mapping of water turbidity near the coast. Even in locations where time-consuming and expensive conventional turbidity monitoring programs exist, local technological limitations prevent complete coverage. Traditional optical satellite techniques using the visible band also have limitations in monitoring turbidity due to non-optimal observing conditions such as clouds, sun-glint, and thick aerosols. In this study, in order to complement the daytime satellite measurements, I used the data from Visible Infrared …

Robotic Motion Generation By Using Spatial-Temporal Patterns From Human Demonstrations, Yongqiang Huang Mar 2019

Robotic Motion Generation By Using Spatial-Temporal Patterns From Human Demonstrations, Yongqiang Huang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Robots excel in manufacturing facilities because the tasks are repetitive and do not change. However, when the tasks change, which happens in almost all tasks that humans perform daily, such as cutting, pouring, and grasping, etc., robots perform much worse. We aim at teaching robots to perform tasks that are subject to change using demonstrations collected from humans, a problem referred to as learning from demonstration (LfD).

LfD consists of two parts: the data of human demonstrations, and the algorithm that extracts knowledge from the data to perform the same motions. Similarly, this thesis is divided into two parts. The …

Genomics And Transcriptomics Approaches To Understanding Drug Resistance Mechanisms In The Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum, Justin Allan Gibbons Mar 2019

Genomics And Transcriptomics Approaches To Understanding Drug Resistance Mechanisms In The Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum, Justin Allan Gibbons

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum is responsible for about 500,000 deaths a year and is evolving resistance to the front-line treatment of artemisinin-based combination therapy. Resistance is currently confined to South East Asia, however millions of lives will be at risk if resistance spreads to Africa. Understanding the mechanism of resistance to artemisinins would aid containment strategies to prevent the spread of artemisinin resistance. There is also an urgent need to accelerate drug discovery since drug resistance has already been documented to all existing antimalarials. Here, I report on our efforts to understand the function of the gene k13, the …

Saudi Special Education Preservice Teachers’ Perspective Towards Inclusion, Sarah Binmahfooz Mar 2019

Saudi Special Education Preservice Teachers’ Perspective Towards Inclusion, Sarah Binmahfooz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In Saudi Arabia, students with disabilities have historically received education in special and segregated schools. As times progressed, regulations and laws changed the manner in which students with disabilities were served. Regulations order that students with disabilities be educated in the least restrictive environment; however, preservice teachers’ perspectives continue to differ in regard to working with students with disabilities in a general education setting. Research has shown that teachers who portray positive attitudes towards inclusion are more likely to work with students with disabilities in an inclusive classroom (Dev & Hayes, 2015). Today, inclusion has occurred in schools around the …

Nationalism And The Communists: Re-Evaluating The Communist Guomindang Split Of 1927, Ryan C. Ferro Mar 2019

Nationalism And The Communists: Re-Evaluating The Communist Guomindang Split Of 1927, Ryan C. Ferro

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The 1924-1927 United Front period has long been understood within a civil war context. The major revolutionaries of ethnic Han origins and the myriad of Comintern advisors that played significant roles have subsequently all been evaluated in those terms. My work decenters the civil war narrative in order to dislodge the rigid labels that have historically accompanied the identities of the Guomindang and the Chinese Communist Party. When re-evaluating the activities of the First United Front as a loosely defined tactical alliance, the White Terror -perpetrated by the GMD onto Communists and their affiliated members – then becomes a moment …

Full-Waveform Inversion Of Common-Offset Ground Penetrating Radar (Gpr) Data, Sajad Jazayeri Mar 2019

Full-Waveform Inversion Of Common-Offset Ground Penetrating Radar (Gpr) Data, Sajad Jazayeri

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Maintenance of aging buried infrastructure and reinforced concrete are critical issues in the United States. Inexpensive non-destructive techniques for mapping and imaging infrastructure and defects are an integral component of maintenance. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a widely-used non-destructive tool for locating buried infrastructure and for imaging rebar and other features of interest to civil engineers. Conventional acquisition and interpretation of GPR profiles is based on the arrival times of strong reflected/diffracted returns, and qualitative interpretation of return amplitudes. Features are thereby generally well located, but their material properties are only qualitatively assessed. For example, in the typical imaging of …

Effects Of External Memory Aid Assessment And Treatment On Everyday Task Performance Of Individuals With Mild Neurocognitive Disorder, Alyssa M. Lanzi Mar 2019

Effects Of External Memory Aid Assessment And Treatment On Everyday Task Performance Of Individuals With Mild Neurocognitive Disorder, Alyssa M. Lanzi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Individuals with mild neurocognitive disorder complete many activities of daily living independently; however, they may require the use of compensatory strategies while performing everyday tasks. Compensatory strategies, such as external memory aids, incorporate a strengths-based approach to enhance the functional needs of individuals. Although external memory aids have a strong evidence-base, limited assessment tools and interventions are available to facilitate the development of individualized treatment plans that promote sustained strategy use. To better support the everyday needs of individuals with mild neurocognitive disorder and to inform clinicians who are developing interventions, the current dissertation includes four paper that examine a …

Variations Of Sedimentary Biogenic Silica In The Gulf Of Mexico During The Deepwater Horizon And Ixtoc-I Oil Spill., Jong Jin Lee Mar 2019

Variations Of Sedimentary Biogenic Silica In The Gulf Of Mexico During The Deepwater Horizon And Ixtoc-I Oil Spill., Jong Jin Lee

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research is to understand the impacts of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill and the 1970-1980 IXTOC-I oil spill and other anthropogenic activity (e.g. dam construction) on surface water primary productivity by measuring sedimentary biogenic silica. It is known that sedimentary biogenic silica is distinct from mineral – bound silica, therefore it has been used as a proxy record for surface water primary productivity (e.g. diatom blooms). The Deepwater Horizon oil spill resulted in a widespread Marine Oil Snow Sedimentation and Flocculent Accumulation (MOSSFA) event. The IXTOC-I oil spill was one of the largest oil spills …

Machine Learning, Game Theory Algorithms, And Medium Access Protocols For 5g And Internet-Of-Thing (Iot) Networks, Mohamed Elkourdi Mar 2019

Machine Learning, Game Theory Algorithms, And Medium Access Protocols For 5g And Internet-Of-Thing (Iot) Networks, Mohamed Elkourdi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the first part of this dissertation, a novel medium access protocol for the Internet of Thing (IoT) networks is introduced. The Internet of things (IoT), which is the network of physical devices embedded with sensors, actuators, and connectivity, is being accelerated into the mainstream by the emergence of 5G wireless networking. This work presents an uncoordinated non-orthogonal random-access protocol, which is an enhancement to the recently introduced slotted ALOHA- NOMA (SAN) protocol that provides high throughput, while being matched to the low complexity requirements and the sporadic traffic pattern of IoT devices. Under ideal conditions it has been shown …

The Effects Of Mortality Salience On Interest In Death (And Life) Among High Openness Individuals, Patrick Boyd Mar 2019

The Effects Of Mortality Salience On Interest In Death (And Life) Among High Openness Individuals, Patrick Boyd

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Terror management theory suggests that the fear of death is ubiquitous. Only recently has death been examined as something potentially interesting from this framework, and specifically, to individuals high in trait openness (Boyd, Morris, & Goldenberg, 2017). This research, however, did not clearly delineate if participants were actually becoming interested in death. My studies address this ambiguity by examining what high openness individuals are becoming interested in and if the way death is construed impacts interest. Study 1 tested if in addition to becoming more generally interested, high openness individuals become interested in death per se following mortality salience (relative …

William Of Ockham's Divine Command Theory, Matthew Dee Mar 2019

William Of Ockham's Divine Command Theory, Matthew Dee

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There was a long-standing consensus that Ockham was a Divine Command Theorist - one who holds that all of morality is ultimately grounded in God's commands. But contrary to this long-standing consensus, three arguments have recently surfaced that Ockham is not a divine command theorist. The thesis of this dissertation is that, contrary to these three arguments, Ockham is a divine command theorist. The first half of the dissertation is an analysis of the three necessary and jointly sufficient conditions for virtuous action, whereas the second half is a response to the three contemporary arguments that Ockham isn't a divine …

An Application Of The Trial-Based Functional Analysis To Assess Problem Behavior Evoked By Ritual Interruption, Jennifer R. Weyman Mar 2019

An Application Of The Trial-Based Functional Analysis To Assess Problem Behavior Evoked By Ritual Interruption, Jennifer R. Weyman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Higher-order restricted and repetitive behavior includes a rigid adherence to routines and schedules or insistence on sameness or completeness. Some individuals with autism spectrum disorder engage in problem behavior when these higher-order rituals are interrupted. Modifying the trial-based functional analysis to assess problem behavior evoked by the interruption of higher-order rituals might allow therapists and teachers with limited resources to assess this function of problem behavior. In addition, it may mitigate some of the risks associated with the traditional functional analysis. Thus, the first purpose of the current study was to evaluate the use of the trial-based functional analysis to …

Some Effects Of Functional Analysis On Problem Behavior Outside Of Session, Karie S. John Mar 2019

Some Effects Of Functional Analysis On Problem Behavior Outside Of Session, Karie S. John

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Conducting a functional analysis (FA) is the most empirically supported method of determining problem behavior, yet clinicians report various barriers to conducting FAs. A common concern associated with conducting FAs is that by reinforcing problem behavior during assessment, problem behavior may increase outside of the assessment context (Hanley, 2012). However, little research has validated this concern. In fact, behavioral contrast research suggests the opposite may be more likely. Behavioral contrast can best be described as a change in behavior in one context as a result of the rate of reinforcement of the behavior in another context (Reynolds, 1961). The purpose …

A Comparison Of High-Tech And Low-Tech Response Modalities To Improve Student Performance And Classroom Behavior, Thomas J. Schulz Mar 2019

A Comparison Of High-Tech And Low-Tech Response Modalities To Improve Student Performance And Classroom Behavior, Thomas J. Schulz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study compared the effects of high-tech (e.g., clickers) and low-tech (e.g., response cards) active responding strategies during whole-group English language arts in two first-grade classrooms serving students with and without disabilities. The authors combined an ABAB reversal design with an alternating treatments design to compare the impact of using high-tech (clickers) and low-tech (response cards and hand raising) modalities on academic engagement, accuracy of responding, and disruptive behavior across four teacher-nominated students in two first-grade classrooms. During baseline, the teacher conducted her lesson as planned by having the students raise his/her hand to answer questions. In the intervention phase, …

Evaluating Behavioral Skills Training To Improve Individual’S With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities Bowling Form, Margaret Green Mar 2019

Evaluating Behavioral Skills Training To Improve Individual’S With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities Bowling Form, Margaret Green

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluated the effectiveness of behavioral skills training (BST) as an intervention to improve bowling form. Three individuals with mild to moderate intellectual disability participated. A multiple baseline design was used to evaluate the changes in each participant’s bowling form. Each of the participant’s bowling form improved after BST was introduced. Two of the three participant’s performance increased with BST alone. The third participant showed minimal improvement after BST, however with the addition of a reinforcement component, the participant’s form increased substantially from baseline. The results of this study suggest BST is an effective intervention to use for improving …

Comparison Of Token Reinforcement And Monetary Reinforcement To Increase Steps In Adults With Intellectual Disabilities In A Group Home Setting, Hana Hanashiro-Parson Mar 2019

Comparison Of Token Reinforcement And Monetary Reinforcement To Increase Steps In Adults With Intellectual Disabilities In A Group Home Setting, Hana Hanashiro-Parson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As the obesity rate in America continues to rise, the levels of physical activity have persistently declined at a rapid pace across all age groups. This trend is demonstrated most significantly in individuals diagnosed with intellectual disabilities (ID). Due to the high obesity rate in individuals with ID, it is crucial to find an effective intervention to increase physical activity. The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness of token reinforcement and monetary reinforcement for increasing physical activity among adults with ID, to assess preference for token or monetary reinforcement, and to evaluate the effects of choice of …

Evaluating The Effects Of Matched Stimulation On Vocal Stereotypy And Skill Acquisition, Joel D. Greenbaum Mar 2019

Evaluating The Effects Of Matched Stimulation On Vocal Stereotypy And Skill Acquisition, Joel D. Greenbaum

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Stereotypic behavior is often observed in children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD; American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Stereotypy can inhibit skill acquisition by leading to inaccuracy on task performance and/or slower task completion (e.g., Koegel & Covert, 1972; Morrison & Rosales-Ruiz, 1997). Several studies have demonstrated that access to preferred matched stimulation leads to a reduction of vocal stereotypical behavior (e.g., Lanovaz, Rapp, & Ferguson, 2012). However, it is paramount that treatments not only be effective in decreasing the problem behavior, but do so without further inhibiting academic progress. The current study evaluated the effects of matched stimulation (i.e., …

Assessing Teacher Preference For Training Modalities For Behavior Intervention Plans, Laurel M. Porter Mar 2019

Assessing Teacher Preference For Training Modalities For Behavior Intervention Plans, Laurel M. Porter

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Within public schools, teachers and instructors may require training to implement procedures listed in a behavior intervention plan (BIP) to support students with disabilities. It is crucial that teachers receive training that is both effective and efficient. Behavioral skills training (BST) and video modeling are two training modalities that are proven to be effective for a wide range of skills and learners. Written instructions, although they are not supported as an effective training method in the literature, can be used as task analysis for the steps that are needed to be performed for a procedure. At present, there is no …

Implementation Of Differential Reinforcement Of Other Behavior And Response Cost Procedures In Children With Down Syndrome, Melissa S. Giblin Mar 2019

Implementation Of Differential Reinforcement Of Other Behavior And Response Cost Procedures In Children With Down Syndrome, Melissa S. Giblin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is some discrepancy on how differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO) and response cost (RC) affect responding within the context of token economies. We evaluated DRO and two variations of response cost with and without verbal feedback to decrease response errors in the context of academic skills for three children diagnosed with Down syndrome. The results suggest that a token economy intervention alone, with or without verbal feedback, was not effective for 2 of 3 participants. Gestural prompting was required to reduce response errors for those 2 participants and is possibly responsible for reducing response errors for the third …

An Evaluation Of Parent Implemented Web-Based Behavior Skills Training For Firearm Safety Skills, Marissa Ann Novotny Mar 2019

An Evaluation Of Parent Implemented Web-Based Behavior Skills Training For Firearm Safety Skills, Marissa Ann Novotny

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Behavioral skills training (BST) is effective for teaching safety skills but often requires a behavior analyst to conduct the training, which can make it costly and inaccessible for most parents or teachers. Parent-conducted BST may allow for children to receive training without the need for a trained behavior analyst. However, providing parents with training can often be difficult. Manualized training from a website could allow parents access to needed material at a low or no cost. This study evaluated a web-based manualized intervention implemented by parents for teaching firearm safety skills using BST. First, BST experts and parents validated the …

Implementation Of The Prevent-Teach-Reinforce Model Within Multi-Tiered Systems Of Support For Elementary School Students With Problem Behavior, Sofia Reyes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluated the implementation of the school-based Prevent-Teach-Reinforce (PTR) model within multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) for elementary school students engaging in high levels of problem behavior. Three students and their classroom teachers in two public schools participated in the team-based PTR process during which they engaged in teaming and goal setting, functional behavior assessment, intervention, and evaluation. A multiple baseline across participants design was used to evaluate the impact of using the PTR model on student problem and replacement behaviors. Direct and indirect observations of student behaviors were conducted across target and generalization academic time periods. Findings indicate …

Medical Decision Making Among Individuals With A Variant Of Uncertain Significance In A Hereditary Cancer Gene And Those With A Chek2 Pathogenic Variant, Deanna J. Almanza Mar 2019

Medical Decision Making Among Individuals With A Variant Of Uncertain Significance In A Hereditary Cancer Gene And Those With A Chek2 Pathogenic Variant, Deanna J. Almanza

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite national guidelines, women with a BRCA VUS or CHEK2 pathogenic variant are choosing to have risk-reducing surgeries such as bilateral mastectomies which are not aligned with their level of cancer risk based on genetic test results alone. Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with 6 women with a BRCA VUS and 12 with a CHEK2 pathogenic variant exploring the factors influencing their decision-making process when considering medical management options. Patients from a cancer registry agreed to a recorded telephone interview. Coding was performed using the main constructs from the Ottawa Patient Decision Guide including: knowledge, uncertainty, values, and support. Iterative …

“Living Creatures Of Every Kind:” An Ecofeminist Reading Of Genesis 1-3, T. G. Barkasy Mar 2019

“Living Creatures Of Every Kind:” An Ecofeminist Reading Of Genesis 1-3, T. G. Barkasy

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work will examine the Genesis creation narratives through an ecofeminist critical lens to illuminate the ambivalence regarding both the ecological and feminist concerns pertinent to ecofeminist criticism. While ecology and feminism are major issues in today’s social and political climates, ecofeminism and its presence in biblical scholarship is not as prevalent as one might think. When it is discussed, authors come to varying conclusions on the Bible’s stance about either nature or gender, and discussions that consciously espouse ecofeminist methodology are so far insufficient. This work utilizes the documentary hypothesis in order to examine the parallel narratives of creation …

Weaponizing Ordinary Objects: Women, Masculine Performance, And The Anxieties Of Men In Medieval Iceland, Steven T. Dunn Mar 2019

Weaponizing Ordinary Objects: Women, Masculine Performance, And The Anxieties Of Men In Medieval Iceland, Steven T. Dunn

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis unravels the deeper meanings attributed to ordinary objects, such as clothing and food, in thirteenth-century Icelandic literature and legal records. I argue that women weaponized these ordinary objects to circumvent their social and legal disadvantages by performing acts that medieval Icelandic society deemed masculine. By comparing various literary sources, however, I show that medieval Icelandic society gradually redefined and questioned the acceptability of that behavior, especially during the thirteenth-century. This is particularly evident in the late thirteenth-century Njal’s Saga, wherein a woman named Hallgerd has been villainized for stealing cheese from a troublesome neighbor. If Hallgerd were a …

Fish Communities On Natural And Artificial Reefs In The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico, Elizabeth C. Viau Mar 2019

Fish Communities On Natural And Artificial Reefs In The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico, Elizabeth C. Viau

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Artificial reefs have been deployed throughout the world’s oceans to act as habitat and fishing enhancement tools. To expand current research on the role of artificial reefs in the marine community, ordination and multivariate regression methods were used here to analyze survey data of natural and artificial reefs. The reefs, located in the Northern Gulf of Mexico (NGOM) and on the West Florida Shelf (WFS), had been previously surveyed from 2004 to 2015 using remote operated vehicle and stationary video techniques. This study tested the hypothesis that similar functional roles are accounted for at both natural and artificial reef sites …

Conserved Glycine Residues Control Transient Helicity And Disorder In The Cold Regulated Protein, Cor15a, Oluwakemi Sowemimo Mar 2019

Conserved Glycine Residues Control Transient Helicity And Disorder In The Cold Regulated Protein, Cor15a, Oluwakemi Sowemimo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

COR15A is a cold regulated disordered protein from Arabidopsis thaliana that contributes to freezing tolerance in plants by protecting membranes. It belongs to the (LEA) Late Embryogenesis Abundant group of proteins that accumulate during the later stage of seed development and are expressed in various parts of the plant. During freezing-induced cellular dehydration, COR15A transitions from a disordered structure to a mostly α-helical structure that binds and stabilizes chloroplast membranes when cells dehydrate due to freezing. We hypothesize that increasing the transient α-helicity of COR15A under normal conditions will increase its ability to bind and protect chloroplast membranes when cells …

Effects Of An Academic Enrichment Program On Elementary-Aged Students' Performance, Lauren E. Nieder

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research was to develop a greater understanding of the effectiveness of enrichment programs outside of the school setting. This study was also intended to contribute to the broader understanding of the mechanism of student school-related stress, reported by parents, as it relates to student academic performance, specifically in a population which primarily consists of students and parents who are of Asian-Indian-American descent. With rising standards and intensifying pressure on students to be academically successful, it is necessary to examine the stress students experience due to their academics, as well as its effects on their academic performance. …

Power Conditioning System On A Micro-Grid System, Tamoghna Banerjee Mar 2019

Power Conditioning System On A Micro-Grid System, Tamoghna Banerjee

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents renewable energy, power electronics, and distributed generators. The focus is on wind farm generator, photovoltaic cell, and battery bank system. Power Conditioning system improves the performance of a power system. Apart from the benefits of converting between DC/AC, there is adequate control of real power and additional control of economic reactive power. This is possible because of multiple sources in the system.

This project throws light on the basic principle of power system conditioning, its operation and control, and the economic studies.
