Understanding Nonprofit Boards: An Exploratory Study Of The Governance Practices Of Regional Nonprofits, Susan Ryan Goodman
Understanding Nonprofit Boards: An Exploratory Study Of The Governance Practices Of Regional Nonprofits, Susan Ryan Goodman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Many researchers have catalogued best practices of board governance. Most of the existing research employed surveys to review compliance with these practices, and the results are highly quantitative as well as self-reported. This study used interviews of board members representing a cross-section of nonprofits to examine conformity with recommended governance best practices and procedures as well as to provide insight into how these practices have changed during their tenure.Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 nonprofit board members in the Tampa Bay area. Using the thematic coding approach proposed by Braun and Clark (2006), four themes emerged from the data: Recruiting, …
Revisiting Darwin’S Little Pond As A Method To Liberate Phosphorus From Apatite Under Prebiotic Hadean Earth Conditions, Jennifer Lago
Revisiting Darwin’S Little Pond As A Method To Liberate Phosphorus From Apatite Under Prebiotic Hadean Earth Conditions, Jennifer Lago
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Phosphorus is an essential element for life as we know it. Phosphorus, mainly in the form of phosphate, is key to biologic functions such as genetic material, energy production, and cellular framework. As phosphorus is key to so many important biological functions it is of no wonder the question of how phosphorus was incorporated into life initially is a fundamental question in how life began.
During this time a prebiotic phosphorus source would need to have originated in rock, as phosphorus has not volatile source on Earth. The most prevalent mineral source on a prebiotic Earth would likely have been …
Unraveling The Role Of Novel G5 Peptidase Family Proteins In Virulence And Cell Envelope Biogenesis Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Stephanie M. Marroquin
Unraveling The Role Of Novel G5 Peptidase Family Proteins In Virulence And Cell Envelope Biogenesis Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Stephanie M. Marroquin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Virulence factors and the bacterial cell envelope are two important components in S. aureus pathogenesis and survival. More importantly, understanding the regulation of these cellular processes is crucial to further understanding and combating this successful pathogen. To date, numerous factors have been identified as playing a role in the regulation of Agr activity in S. aureus, including transcription factors, antisense RNAs, and host elements. Herein we investigate the product of SAUSA300_1984 (termed MroQ), a transmembrane G5 peptidase family protein, as a novel effector of this system. Using a USA300 mroQ mutant we observed a drastic reduction in proteolysis, hemolysis, and …

Oppression, Resistance, And Empowerment: The Power Dynamics Of Naming And Un-Naming In African American Literature, 1794 To 2019, Melissa "Maggie" Romigh
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Oppression, Resistance, and Empowerment: The Power Dynamics of Naming and Un-naming in African American Literature, 1794 to 2019 researches and discusses the way African American authors both discuss naming and un-naming in their works and the way they use naming in their works to illustrate the dynamics of power in relationships—racial, familial, gender-related, work-related, etc. Chapter 1 focuses on the earliest forms of African American literature, memoirs in particular, also known as “slave narratives.” In their memoirs, many of those men and women who were formerly enslaved wrote about having their names taken from them and replaced with names chosen …
Ecological Genomics Of Two Coastal Foundation Plant Species, Jeannie Mounger
Ecological Genomics Of Two Coastal Foundation Plant Species, Jeannie Mounger
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
I was born and raised in rural Florida on a tributary of the Withlacoochee River. “Withlacoochee” comes from a series of Muscogee Creek words that together mean “big little water,” possibly owing to the seasonal fluctuations in the breadth and flow of the river or to the chain of lakes that in part form it. The name contains within it an understanding of the capacity of land and water to undergo great shifts. It conjures images of mutable boundaries, of water covering and receding across the landscape over and over again. Many of my clearest memories from childhood are related …
Metastatic Mat Phenotype Driven By Noncanonical Epha2 Signaling In Melanoma, Chao Zhang
Metastatic Mat Phenotype Driven By Noncanonical Epha2 Signaling In Melanoma, Chao Zhang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Acquired BRAF/MAPK/extracellular signal‒regulated kinase inhibitor resistance in melanoma results in a new transcriptional state associated with an increased risk of metastasis. In this study, we identified noncanonical ephrin receptor (Eph) EphA2 signaling as a driver of the resistance-associated metastatic state. We used mass spectrometry‒based proteomic and phenotypic assays to demonstrate that the expression of active noncanonical EphA2-S897E in melanoma cells led to a mesenchymal-to-amoeboid transition driven by Cdc42 activation. The induction of mesenchymal-to-amoeboid transition promoted melanoma cell invasion, survival under shear stress, adhesion to endothelial cells under continuous-flow conditions, increased permeability of endothelial cell monolayers, and stimulated melanoma transendothelial cell …
Gamifying The Crew: Effects Of Collaborative Responsive Writing Using Gamification, In Interactive Web-Based E-Books, On L2 International Students’ Motivation And Academic Vocabulary Achievement, Rabea M. Alfahad
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
International students usually find it challenging to adapt to English academic vocabulary (Park, 2019). The literature is interspersed with the use of a variety of technologies and technological tools to augment the knowledge of language learners regarding English academic vocabulary (Flemban, 2018). However, in this dissertation, interactive web-based e-books and two strategies to teach English academic vocabulary (gamification and collaborative responsive writing) is employed. Gamification is applying game mechanics in non-game related contexts (Groh, 2012). This study investigated the impact of these two strategies on the participants’ academic vocabulary achievement and motivation level. In so doing, interactive web-based e-books are …
Evolutionary Mechanisms For Host Resistance To Tumor Growth And Subsequent Cancer Cell Counter-Adaptations, Arig Ibrahim Hashim
Evolutionary Mechanisms For Host Resistance To Tumor Growth And Subsequent Cancer Cell Counter-Adaptations, Arig Ibrahim Hashim
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cancer is well-recognized as an evolutionary system, as first proposed by Cairns and Nowell more than 60 years ago. In an evolutionary context, cancers growing in vivo typically consist of heterogeneous subpopulations of cells that interact with each other and with host cells through selection forces operating at many temporal and spatial scales. Moreover, the tumor environment comprises more than just cancer cells; it includes a rich cancer stroma and cancer-driving molecules such as cytokines and metabolites. The tumor’s environment comprises intratumoral heterogeneity that often leads to therapy resistance attributed to the essential roles of many genetic and nongenetic mechanisms. …
Investigation Of An Alternative Protocol For The Production Of Sars-Cov-2 Antigenic Proteins, Nichole Ninaltowski
Investigation Of An Alternative Protocol For The Production Of Sars-Cov-2 Antigenic Proteins, Nichole Ninaltowski
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With the COVID-19 pandemic showing no signs of slowing down, large-scale antigenic protein production is still needed for surveillance using serologic assays. From screening to vaccines to biotherapeutics, being able to produce the proteins for these assays is essential; however, the current gold standard method for producing SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins is prohibitively expensive for most research groups.
Alternative methods of transfecting mammalian cells to produce recombinant proteins that are relatively inexpensive have been used for years. Unlike the expensive, commercially available lipid-based methods, other established methods such as polyethyleneimine (PEI), are considerably easier, and cheaper to meet the needs of …
A Functional Characterization Of The Omega (Ω) Subunit Of Rna Polymerase In Staphylococcus Aureus, Shrushti B. Patil
A Functional Characterization Of The Omega (Ω) Subunit Of Rna Polymerase In Staphylococcus Aureus, Shrushti B. Patil
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In bacteria, RNA polymerase (RNAP) is a well-characterized and highly conserved multi-subunit enzyme complex responsible for transcription of DNA into RNA. The ω subunit (rpoZ/RpoZ), one of the smaller accessory subunits of RNAP, is often overlooked and under-studied, however, particularly in Gram-positive species. We have previously shown that deleting ω impacts the integrity of RNA polymerase in S. aureus, especially the β' subunit, and alters preference of the core enzyme for sigma factors, skewing heavily towards σB instead of the housekeeping σ factor. Consequently, this causes deregulation of myriad transcriptional processes, strongly rewiring gene expression circuits, and ultimately impairing the …
Quercetin Loaded Nanoparticles For The Treatment Of Dry Eye Disease, Bassma Sami Nashaat Hamed Eltanameli
Quercetin Loaded Nanoparticles For The Treatment Of Dry Eye Disease, Bassma Sami Nashaat Hamed Eltanameli
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Dry eye disease (DED) is a common condition that affects the eye's anterior surface due to tear deficiency or excessive evaporation. The lack of tears leads to dryness and initiation of an inflammatory response which can irritate the eye and interfere with daily activities. Current treatment depends mainly on artificial tears eye drops which offer temporary relief and require repetitive administration due to frequent blinking. Prescription medications are also available but need around three months to relieve dry eye symptoms. Quercetin is a flavonoid that has an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect. However, it suffers from low water solubility and low …

MnSod (Sod2) deletion in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) of Sod2flox/floxVMD2-cre mice leads to oxidative stress-induced apoptosis of the RPE and photoreceptor cells that show salient features of dry-AMD. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential antioxidant effect of betaine in protecting retinal health in Sod2flox/floxVMD2-cre mice. Betaine low dose (50mg/Kg Body Weight) and high dose (500mg/kg Body Weight, n=9) were administered intraperitoneally to 8-weeks old male and female Sod2flox/floxVMD2-cre mice daily for four months, while the control group (Sod2flox/floxVMD2-cre mice; n=9) received saline. We used spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), retinal outer nuclear layer (ONL) thickness …
Seasonality In Competence To Transmit West Nile Virus For A Widespread Reservoir, Kyle L. Koller
Seasonality In Competence To Transmit West Nile Virus For A Widespread Reservoir, Kyle L. Koller
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
All organisms face a central conflict; a limited supply of resources must beoptimally allocated to competing biological functions. Utilizing robust immune defenses can be energetically costly;, thus, immune function is often diminished when other processes, such as reproduction, molt, or migration demand energy. As wild animals residing in temporally dynamic environments face seasonal patterns in resource availability, infectious disease risk, and environmental suitability, many species have evolved endogenous biological rhythms so that the performance of reproduction, molt, or migration and the associated trade-off with immune function be completed when doing so best promotes fitness. In turn, this demand to optimize …
Expansion-Contraction: Spatial And Temporal Variability In Connectivity In A Stream-Wetland Flow Network, Savannah Fransbergen
Expansion-Contraction: Spatial And Temporal Variability In Connectivity In A Stream-Wetland Flow Network, Savannah Fransbergen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The seasonal expansion and contraction in a stream-wetland flow network is often difficult to characterize due to a lack of accurate mapping products, but proper characterization is important for the management of these resources. A new approach to mapping hydrography, resulting in a Regional Hydrography Dataset (RHD), may offer additional insights not provided by the national standard, the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). The RHD can be customized to provide seasonal or monthly hydrograph, whereas the NHD is static. We conducted field validation (241 sites) and geospatial analyses to assess the accuracy of these products in the northern Tampa Bay Area. …
Effects Of Nitrate On Arsenic Mobilization During Aquifer Storage And Recovery, Hania Hawasli
Effects Of Nitrate On Arsenic Mobilization During Aquifer Storage And Recovery, Hania Hawasli
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Aquifer storage and recovery technology is used to sustain water resources and to prevent saltwater intrusion. The injected water can come from various resources, including treated wastewater. In pilot ASR studies in the Tampa Bay region, researchers found high As concentrations in the recovered water from the oxidation of the arsenopyrite that is embedded in the aquifers. The presence of dissolved O2 in the injected water is a major factor in the arsenopyrite oxidation during ASR, however the effects of NO3- on the arsenopyrite has not been studied yet. This is an important knowledge gap because injected water may contain …
Criminalizing Lgbtq+ Jamaicans: Social, Legal, And Colonial Influences On Homophobic Policy, Zoe C. Knowles
Criminalizing Lgbtq+ Jamaicans: Social, Legal, And Colonial Influences On Homophobic Policy, Zoe C. Knowles
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Based on colonial and neocolonial models of oppression, Jamaica has adopted many laws, policies, and systems mandated by the British monarchy. Many of these laws contain anti-LGBTQ+ policies which remain in effect today. To address the criminalization of LGBTQ+ identities, I used queer theory and queer criminology to analyse the ways Jamaica constructs LGBTQ+ people as criminals and how they are treated in the legal and criminal justice systems from a postcolonial standpoint. Using a qualitative text-based feminist and queer policy analysis, I investigated social, legal, and colonial influences on current anti-LGBTQ+ policy by looking at the Offences Against the …
An Assessment Of Nutrient Improvement In Surface Water Due To The Conversion Of Onsite Sewage Treatment And Disposal Systems To Sewerage, Jenelle A. Mohammed
An Assessment Of Nutrient Improvement In Surface Water Due To The Conversion Of Onsite Sewage Treatment And Disposal Systems To Sewerage, Jenelle A. Mohammed
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Florida represents approximately 12% of all onsite sewage treatment and disposal systems (OSTDS) in the United States. Properly designed, constructed and maintained OSTDS are effective eco- friendly alternatives for the treatment of domestic wastewater from households not serviced by public sewer systems. However, conventional OSTDS are not designed to effectively remove nitrogen. If installed and improperly used, they may contribute other pollutants. OSTDS have also been linked to degraded water quality in some regions. However, it has been difficult to quantify OSTDS impacts on water quality because of various confounding factors such as point and non-point sources of nutrient input. …

Plasma Treatment Of High-Density Polyethylene, Linear Low-Density Polyethylene, And Polyvinyl Chloride Geomembranes By Air And Oxygen, Merve Koca Uyar
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
High-density polyethylene (HDPE), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) geomembranes were treated with air and oxygen plasma. The purpose of air and oxygen plasma treatment of geomembrane surface is to increase the surface wettability of these materials, thereby increasing adhesive properties. Increasing adhesive properties enables a surface to be coated with a desired material with antibacterial, antioxidant, and UV resistant characteristics, without changing bulk material properties. To protect the geomembranes from oxidation degradation, UV degradation and biological degradation, it is important to increase the antibacterial, antioxidant, and UV resistant properties of geomembrane. Before and after the plasma treatments …

The Multifaceted Role Of Ccar-1 In The Alternative Splicing And Germline Regulation In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Doreen Ikhuva Lugano
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Cell Division Cycle and Apoptosis Regulator (CCAR) family members are an enigmatic family of proteins regulating metabolism, cancer, apoptosis, DNA damage, and stress. Mammals have CCAR family members, CCAR1 and CCAR2/DBC1, which evolved from the founding family member CCAR-1/LST-3 expressed in Caenorhabditis elegans. Several studies have shown the importance of understanding these proteins' function in standard and altered physiological processes. Our studies aim to understand the genome-wide alternative splicing and germline regulation of Caenorhabditis elegans CCAR-1 in normal and heat shock conditions. Recently, mammalian CCAR family member CCAR2/DBC1 regulates the alternative splicing by forming a complex with ZNF326. This …

Automated Identification Of Stages In Gonotrophic Cycle Of Mosquitoes Using Computer Vision Techniques, Sherzod Kariev
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, we design Computer Vision techniques to determine stages in the Gonotrophic cycle of mosquitoes. The dataset for our problem came from 125 adult female mosquitoes - each of which belonged to one of three species - Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus, and Anopheles stephensi. The mosquitoes were raised in a lab and passed through all fourGonotrophic stages (Un-fed, Fully-fed, Semi-gravid, and Gravid). At each stage, their images were captured on a plain background via a Xiaomi smartphone, resulting in a dataset of 1784 images. The images were then augmented using standard techniques to generate a larger dataset of …
Synthesis Of A Multimodal Ecological Model For Scalable, High-Resolution Arboviral Risk Prediction In Florida, Sean P. Beeman
Synthesis Of A Multimodal Ecological Model For Scalable, High-Resolution Arboviral Risk Prediction In Florida, Sean P. Beeman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
West Nile virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEEV) represent the two greatest endemic arboviral risks to the state of Florida. Currently, no approved human vaccine exists for the prevention of either virus. In the absence of a vaccine, effective disease surveillance is paramount for public health. In Florida, WNV and EEEV sentinel chicken surveillance is conducted by mosquito control programs operated at the county, municipality, or special taxing district level. This program was implemented in 1978 following human outbreaks of St. Louis Encephalitis virus (SLEV) that occurred between 1959 and 1977, with initial sentinel coops placed in proximity …
Using Hyper-Dimensional Spanning Trees To Improve Structure Preservation During Dimensionality Reduction, Curtis Thomas Davis
Using Hyper-Dimensional Spanning Trees To Improve Structure Preservation During Dimensionality Reduction, Curtis Thomas Davis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Understanding relations in hyper-dimensional data is a prevalent problem, which is often approached by using dimensionality reduction. The structure preserved from the original data is often dependent on the type of dimension reduction algorithm used, and it can produce results that vary substantially from one another. Visualizing hyper-dimensional data helps to understand the data, but it presents a problem, as our visualizations rely upon two or three-dimensional displays. Current dimension reduction methods, used to reduce hyper-dimensional data to low-dimensional data, often produce results that fail to preserve the structure as the complexity of the data increases. This reduction in dimension …
Constructing Frameworks For Task-Optimized Visualizations, Ghulam Jilani Abdul Rahim Quadri
Constructing Frameworks For Task-Optimized Visualizations, Ghulam Jilani Abdul Rahim Quadri
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Visualization is crucial in today’s data-driven world to augment and enhance human understanding and decision-making. Effective visualizations must support accuracy in visual task performance and expressive data communication. Effective visualization design depends on the visual channels used, chart types, or visual tasks. However, design choices and visual judgment are co-related, and effectiveness is not one-dimensional, leading to a significant need to understand the intersection of these factors to create optimized visualizations. Hence, constructing frameworks that consider both design decisions and the task being performed enables optimizing visualization design to maximize efficacy. This dissertation describes experiments, techniques, and user studies to …
Unintended Consequences? Testing The Effects Of Adolescent-Targeted Anti-Vaping Media Upon Adult Smokers, Leslie E. Sawyer
Unintended Consequences? Testing The Effects Of Adolescent-Targeted Anti-Vaping Media Upon Adult Smokers, Leslie E. Sawyer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A great deal of controversy surrounds e-cigarettes, with some arguing that protection of youth and non-users is paramount and others maintaining that these products are beneficial from a harm reduction perspective for use by adult smokers for switching from combustible cigarettes and for smoking cessation. Opponents of e-cigarettes have allocated tremendous funds toward advertising campaigns aimed at youth deterrence; however, to date, the effects of these ads upon adult smokers have yet to be examined. The current study used a between-subjects experimental design to investigate the effects of an FDA-distributed youth-targeted anti-vaping PSA, “Vaping is an Epidemic,” upon adult smokers …
Mitigation Strategies For Central Nervous System Oxygen Toxicity In Rodents: Ketone Metabolic Therapy And Mitochondrial Antioxidant Therapy, Christopher Manuel Hinojo
Mitigation Strategies For Central Nervous System Oxygen Toxicity In Rodents: Ketone Metabolic Therapy And Mitochondrial Antioxidant Therapy, Christopher Manuel Hinojo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) is a frequently encountered condition in undersea medicine and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). The risk of CNS oxygen toxicity (CNS-OT) seizures limits its use in hyperbaric medicine and limits bottom time for diving operations. In this study, we sought to understand the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in two mitigation strategies for CNS-OT; ketone metabolic therapy (KMT), which is known to delay onset of CNS-OT seizures, and mitochondria targeted antioxidant therapy (MitoTAT), which has never been tested under HBO2 conditions. We specifically focused on superoxide anions, one of the early reduction products of molecular oxygen, and …

Bad Bunny’S Purplewashing As Gender Violence In Reggaeton: A Feminist Analysis Of Solo De Mi And Yo Perreo Sola, Dairíne Hoban
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Bad Bunny has skyrocketed to fame in the past few years, gaining worldwide recognition as one of the best reggaetoneros of his time. His self-promoted image as an ally to women’s movements and the Queer community has garnered him the recognition of being a role model for youth and as an anomaly in the misogynistic genre of reggaeton. However, few have looked beyond the assertion of allyship to see if his work truly does support women and anti-gender violence ideology. While scholarship on reggaeton has well documented the prevalence of gender violence in the lyrics, videos and overall culture of …
