An Analysis Of The Spatial, Temporal, And Functional Role Of Key Proteins In The Drosophila Melanogaster Salivary Gland During Exocrine Secretion, Kathryn Lantz
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
For over 60 years, the larval salivary gland of Drosophila melanogaster has been the ultimate model for elucidating how steroid hormones trigger genome-wide changes in gene expression in a specific target tissue. Because of the unusual interphase chromosomes of the salivary gland, the regions of the genome that are being induced by the steroid/receptor complex actually form puffs that are easily visible in compound microscopy. Despite the importance of this system, little has been elucidated over the years regarding how the hormone exposure actually changes the physiological activity of this secretory system. The work presented in this dissertation makes a …
Improving Hyperspectral Subpixel Target Detection Using Hybrid Detection Space, Ruixing Li
Improving Hyperspectral Subpixel Target Detection Using Hybrid Detection Space, Ruixing Li
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
A Hyper-Spectral Image (HSI) has high spectral and low spatial resolution. As a result, most targets exist as subpixels, which pose challenges in target detection. Moreover, limitation of target and background samples always hinders the target detection performance. In this thesis, a hybrid method for subpixel target detection of an HSI using minimal prior knowledge is developed. The Matched Filter (MF) and Adaptive Cosine Estimator (ACE) are two popular algorithms in HSI target detection. They have different advantages in differentiating target from background. In the proposed method, the scores of MF and ACE algorithms are used to construct a hybrid …
Effects Of Contract Procurement Factors On Performance Of Transportation Projects, Ruiko Maharjan
Effects Of Contract Procurement Factors On Performance Of Transportation Projects, Ruiko Maharjan
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Cost and schedule savings are the main measures of a project’s success. Several factors affect the cost and schedule performances in a construction project, such as design changes, material, labor and equipment shortages, unpredictable weather conditions, and errors & omissions in contract documents. Some studies have shown that either the construction cost or the schedule performance of a project was dependent on the procurement factors, namely: bid cost, number of bidders, the bid cost deviation between the first and second bidder, the liquidated damage rate per day, the type of a contract, and the project location. However, a comprehensive study on …
The Electrochemical Deposition Of Samarium And Europium Dissolved In Ionic Liquid Solvent, Bea Martinez
The Electrochemical Deposition Of Samarium And Europium Dissolved In Ionic Liquid Solvent, Bea Martinez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Rare-earth elements include the lanthanide series in the periodic table with the addition of scandium and yttrium. China produces approximately 95% of the world’s rare-earths supply and is the largest consumer of the world’s rare earth supply. Domestic production of rare-earth metals is a priority in the US. The domestic demand for rare-earth elements is largely based on their use in electronic devices, catalytic converters, and more importantly defense applications. Therefore, China’s monopoly of rare-earth elements is viewed as a threat to national security. Although capital investments have resulted in an increase in domestic mining and refining of rare-earth materials, …
Sexual Desire Trajectories: Heterosexual Individuals' Perceptions Of The State And Trait Characteristics Of Desire, Caroline Maykut
Sexual Desire Trajectories: Heterosexual Individuals' Perceptions Of The State And Trait Characteristics Of Desire, Caroline Maykut
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Significant theoretical and empirical attention has aimed to classify sexual desire in a way that accounts for its complexities. A recent question to arise from this discussion is whether desire is best conceptualized as a state or a trait. Limited data examine patterns of desire spanning several years, and most data emanate from cross-sectional or short-term follow-up studies. Long-term accounts of desire level variability remain a gap in the literature, as does research inquiring directly about the question of trait desire.
Thirteen heterosexual women and ten heterosexual men, ages 40-63, participated in a semi-structured interview focusing on desire level and …
Acute Salivary Steroid Hormone Responses During Coalitional And Dyadic Competitions In Hong Kong Juvenile Children, Timothy Mchale
Acute Salivary Steroid Hormone Responses During Coalitional And Dyadic Competitions In Hong Kong Juvenile Children, Timothy Mchale
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
A large body of research links testosterone and cortisol responses to competition during adulthood. Little psychoneuroendocrine research has explored salivary steroid hormone responses to competition during middle childhood. This project investigated the relationship between acute salivary steroid hormone change, performance, competitor type, and outcome effects in three different field studies, while controlling for Body Mass Index (BMI) and pubertal development, in a population of ethnically Chinese, Hong Kong juvenile children, 8-11 years of age. The relative dynamics of salivary steroid change were assessed during a 1) coalitional physical competition (soccer) in boys, 2) a non-physical mixed-sex coalitional competition (math contest), …
Subjective Beat Perception In Musical Rhythms In Adult Listeners, Karli M. Nave
Subjective Beat Perception In Musical Rhythms In Adult Listeners, Karli M. Nave
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Synchronization to rhythmic stimuli is an everyday experience, whether it is exercising to the beat of music, dancing salsa, or rocking a baby to sleep. Commonly, humans synchronize their movements with the frequency of the beat (a quasi-isochronous pattern of prominent time points). Previous research has shown that the intended beat periodicity of a rhythmic stimulus can be observed in periodic neural activity; however, the extent to which this reflects robust perception of musical rhythm versus purely stimulus-driven activity is unknown. In Experiment 1 and 2, I investigated how long listeners can maintain a percept of the beat once the …

The Effects Of Distributed Trials On Behaviors Of Students With Significant Disability, Mona Nasir-Tucktuck
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Teaching academic instruction to students with significant cognitive disability (SCD) has been done with success over the past years (Browder, Mims, Spooner, Ahlgrim-Delzell, & Lee, 2008; Hudson & Test, 2011; Mims, Hudson, & Browder, 2012), However, research is scarce and further instructional strategies are needed to help align the standard-based curriculum for this population of students (Browder, Ahlgrim-Delzell, Flowers, & Baker, 2012).
The academic inclusion of students with SCD has been a topic of interest for researchers over the past few decades. In 1997, research on teaching academics to students with SCD was scarce (Nietupski, Hamre-Nietupski, Curtin, Shrikanth, 1997). The …

Software For Sequence Analysis Of Variants In Functional Screening Libraries And Personalized Genome Files, Jacklyn Michelle Newsome
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Detailed knowledge of protein function is critical for both the study of protein interactions and the development of drugs which target specific proteins. Currently, there are few techniques that directly examine protein function. The techniques that are available are time consuming and can only address one variant of a protein at a time. Our laboratory has designed 3 high throughput protein function screens. We hypothesize that these will address this shortfall.
The first screen is the Chimeric Minimotif Decoy (CMD) Assay. For this screen, we constructed red fluorescent proteins with one or more C-terminal minimotifs. Minimotifs are short, contiguous amino …
Synthesis And Electrochemical Characterization Of Pani/Ni And Pani/Au/Ni Composites, Morgan Emily Pacini
Synthesis And Electrochemical Characterization Of Pani/Ni And Pani/Au/Ni Composites, Morgan Emily Pacini
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The purpose of this research is to show that the electrochemically controlled formation of monometallic and bimetallic catalysts in polyaniline (PANI) can directly influence the efficiency and reproducibility of the catalytic oxidation of methanol. PANI is a conductive polymer that provides a three-dimensional template for the metallic catalysts deposition at nitrogen sites. The controlled deposition of metallic species can be achieved using the normal oxidation/reduction cycles of PANI. The deposition of metallic species relies on anion precursors that are electrostatically bound by the polymer during the oxidation cycle. The precursor is reduced directly at the nitrogen sites in the polymer …
Surface Hydrologic Modeling And Analyzing Watershed Hydrologic Response To Landcover Change, Roshan Poudel
Surface Hydrologic Modeling And Analyzing Watershed Hydrologic Response To Landcover Change, Roshan Poudel
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Urban flooding is the most frequently occurring disaster in rapidly urbanizing cities. Rapid urbanization in general, is characterized by an increase in the total impervious surface area, which means less soil cover for the stormwater to infiltrate and a greater volume of runoff from the area in case of a storm event. This increased volume of surface runoff, if not drained, results in urban flooding. Urban flooding can cause serious economic and environmental damages by disrupting transportation and spreading pollution. It is therefore, essential to understand the cause, behavior and effects of urban flooding so as to minimize the risks …
Audits And Accountability In Non-Governmental Organizations, Kenneth J. Retzl
Audits And Accountability In Non-Governmental Organizations, Kenneth J. Retzl
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are becoming increasingly important as providers of development assistance in the Global South. As these organizations are gaining in importance, accountability concerns have grown. NGOs are considered to be accountable to a range of stakeholders, including funders, foreign governments where work is being performed, and the local communities being served. In spite of these concerns, there has been little research on the effectiveness of specific accountability mechanisms. This study empirically tests one such mechanism, the Single Audit, required by the United States' government for organizations that receive federal grant funding. Unfortunately, it is found the results of …
Acculturation And Causes Of Death Among Filipinos In The Us: Focus On Cancer, Abegail Terso Reyes
Acculturation And Causes Of Death Among Filipinos In The Us: Focus On Cancer, Abegail Terso Reyes
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Filipinos in the US are 3.4 million, yet the main causes of death among this primarily immigrant population have not been well characterized nor compared with the mortality experience of their counterparts in the Philippines. Age-adjusted mortality rates were computed for the main causes of death for three populations: Filipinos living in the Philippines (FPHs), Filipinos living in California (FCAs), and non-Hispanic whites in California (WCAs). Regression-derived mortality rate ratios stratified by sex were used to compare the populations, using WCA as the referent population. Included causes of death were ischemic heart disease, stroke, cancer and chronic lower respiratory disease, …

Strike-slip faults play an important role in the development and evolution of extensional regimes including in the intraplate extension in the Basin and Range province. The Basin and Range province is divided into the Northwestern, Northern, Central and Southern Basin and
Range subprovinces. The boundary zone between the Northern and Central subprovinces is marked by several left-lateral fault zones, including the Pahranagat Shear Zone (PSZ), Caliente-Enterprise Zone and Rock Valley Fault Zone. The PSZ has a close spatial and kinematic relationship with the left-lateral Caliente-Enterprise Zone, which lies to the NE, and a slightly more distal relationship to the left-lateral …
Theoretical And Experimental Investigation On The Multiple Shape Memory Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite Actuator, Qi Shen
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Development of biomimetic actuators has been an essential motivation in the study of smart materials. However, few materials are capable of controlling complex twisting and bending deformations simultaneously or separately using a dynamic control system. The ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) is an emerging smart material in actuation and sensing applications, such as biomimetic robotics, advanced medical devices and human affinity applications. Here, we report a Multiple Shape Memory Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite (MSM-IPMC) actuator having multiple-shape memory effect, and is able to perform complex motion by two external inputs, electrical and thermal. Prior to the development of this type of actuator, …
Mapping The Landscape For Archaeological Detection, Preservation, And Interpretation: A Case Study In High Resolution Location Modeling From The Blue Mountains Of Northeastern Oregon, Trent Skinner
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Archaeological location modeling (ALM) is an important tool in most survey strategies, and has contributed substantially to economizing efforts to locate and characterize the archaeological record. The increasing availability of high resolution (<3m) airborne light detection and ranging (lidar) data has the potential to refine the application and ultimately the role of ALM. This research tests the precision and accuracy gained by incorporating lidar derived data into an ALM. The site records and other environmental data used in this study were all generated over the last four decades by the resource specialists of the Malheur National Forest. The Weights-of-Evidence (WofE) probability method (Bonham-Carter 1994) was used to produce two ALMs; one based on a 10m digital elevation model (DEM) created from satellite imaging, and the second from a 3m resolution lidar derived DEM. Independent variables (e.g., slope, aspect, distance to water, etc.) commonly used in ALM were largely replaced by index variables (e.g., slope position classification, topographic wetness index, etc.). The final models were classified into areas of high, medium, and low archaeological potential, then cross-validated against a reserved random dataset. Models were then compared using the Kvamme gain statistic and site to area frequency ratio. The 3m model demonstrated a significant improvement over the results obtained from the 10m model and the current probability model used in the study area. A number of factors including model resolution, statistical methodology, and the character of the independent and dependent variables all contributed to the increase in precision and accuracy. The incremental improvement in modeling efficiency demonstrated here will create time and cost saving in the management and preservation of cultural resources, and ultimately contribute to a better understanding of patterns of past human land use.
An Investigation Of Employment And Wage Distribution In The Construction Industry By Race/Ethnicity And Gender, Binit Kumar Shrestha
An Investigation Of Employment And Wage Distribution In The Construction Industry By Race/Ethnicity And Gender, Binit Kumar Shrestha
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
One of the largest job providers in the U.S, is the construction industry, an industry that suffers from critical problems pertaining to a labor shortage. Yet the industry also struggles with insufficient interest and inconsistent participation from underrepresented demographic groups. To address the issue of workforce income inequality and bias, the industry must better understand the current situation regarding inequality; it needs to pinpoint some basic problems. To do so, analysts must scrutinize the following aspects: 1) the current differences within the construction workforce by race/ethnicity and gender with regards to the total employment and 2) the current disparity within …

Understanding the impact infidelity has on individuals, couples, families, and societies has increasingly become a topic of interest over the last few decades. In recent years, scholars have sought to increase understanding of infidelity through investigating the relationship between infidelity and attachment theory. This research study examines the impact attitudes about infidelity, attachment styles, and gender have on the way in which individuals perceive infidelity. Data was gathered from 310 participants recruited from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and social media. Participants were 18 years of age and older and were, at the time of the study, either in …
Average Cayley Genus For Groups With Two Generators Of Order Greater Than Two, Dawn Sturgeon
Average Cayley Genus For Groups With Two Generators Of Order Greater Than Two, Dawn Sturgeon
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Determining the orientable surfaces on which a particular graph may be imbedded is a basic problem in the area of topological graph theory. We look at groups modeled by Cayley graphs. Imbedding Cayley graphs with symmetry is done using Cayley maps. It is of interest to find the average Cayley genus for a particular group and generating set for the group. We consider the group known as the generalized quaternions with generating set ∆, where ∆ contains two generators with order greater than two. We find a formula for the average Cayley genus of the generalized quaternions. Moreover, we determine …
Lock-Free Self-Adjusting Binary Search Tree, Sachiko Sueki
Lock-Free Self-Adjusting Binary Search Tree, Sachiko Sueki
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
A binary search tree (BST) is a fundamental data structure for maintaining data in a way to allow fast search. As multi-core processors are widely used nowadays, such data structures require the ability to handle concurrent accesses to exploit the concurrent hardware. There are several algorithms on lock-based as well as lock-free BST with and without self-balancing. On the other hand, only a few reports can be found on lock-based self-adjusting BST. To the best of our knowledge, there are no algorithms for lock-free self-adjusting BST. Lock-free guarantees overall progress even if some processes fail, whereas lock-based algorithms fail to …
The Transformation Of American Federalism, 1848-1912, Lance Sorenson
The Transformation Of American Federalism, 1848-1912, Lance Sorenson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
United States expansion following the Mexican-American War served as the catalyst for a reinvention of American Federalism. While much of the historiography traces the accretion of sovereign power in the national government to events caused by the divisions between northern states and southern states, there is an important and understudied East to West component of the process by which sovereign boundaries changed. The American West is a legal space where the hazily defined and capacious concept of federalism received fuller form and clearer definition. During the late nineteenth century and first few years of the twentieth century, the United States …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Canyon de Chelly sits on the Northeastern border of the Kayenta region in Arizona. Because of the position in which they sit, those who lived there likely lived a unique experience when compared to the rest of the Kayenta cultural tradition, of which they are considered a part. By examining the skeletal remains of the canyon occupants, this study is able to reconstruct the demographic profile (age and sex), aspects of health (pathology, stature), analysis of trauma, and aspects of labor (robusticity and entheses) to create the first, modern, complete skeletal analysis of remains recovered from Canyon de Chelly. This …

Understanding Stress Reactivity In Schizophrenia, Mary Vertinski
Understanding Stress Reactivity In Schizophrenia, Mary Vertinski
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The role of stress has long been recognized in schizophrenia; several theories have identified the role of stress as an important factor in the etiology of schizophrenia. A handful of studies have used laboratory psychosocial stressors to examine cortisol stress response in schizophrenia; the results obtained have consistently suggested that the stress response is attenuated in people with schizophrenia. Present study set out to examine stress responsivity in schizophrenia relative to healthy controls. A laboratory stress test was used to investigate cortisol response, heart rate and task appraisal in a sample of 17 healthy controls and 16 men diagnosed with …
Setting The Childless Free: An Ethnographic Study Of The Practice Of The Childfree Identity, Shelly Volsche
Setting The Childless Free: An Ethnographic Study Of The Practice Of The Childfree Identity, Shelly Volsche
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Heeding Sherry Ortner’s call to turn anthropological analysis inward, toward one’s own culture, the following dissertation seeks to understand the identity and practice of the voluntarily childless (hereafter “childfree”) movement in the United States. How do these individuals practice their identity, and how does the identity of “childfree” interact with other roles in their lives? How do they build meaning in a society that emphasizes children as a hallmark of adulthood? What other outlets do childfree individuals have for the “nurturing” tendencies of our species?
Combining sociohistoric analysis with identity and feminist theories, I embarked on nearly two years of …
Emerging Infectious Disease And The Imperiled Relict Leopard Frog, Anthony Wayne Waddle
Emerging Infectious Disease And The Imperiled Relict Leopard Frog, Anthony Wayne Waddle
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The disease chytridiomycosis, caused by the aquatic fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), has emerged as a major contributing factor for worldwide amphibian declines. Although relatively recently described, the impacts from the disease this pathogen causes have been definitively tied to amphibian declines, including some that occurred decades ago. In some cases, declines of individual species occurred with little documentation and are thus poorly understood. The relict leopard frog (Rana onca = Lithobates onca) has experienced such a decline and by the latter part of the 20th century only occurred in two general areas in southern Nevada. Recent research has found …

This culturally relevant qualitative examination of the leadership of Black women educational leaders (BWEL) committed to advancing a social justice leadership agenda within the contested spaces (Stovall, 2004) comprising United States (U.S.) P-12 schools, employs an African centered emancipatory methodology (Kershaw, 1990, 1992; Tillman, 2002), situated in a conceptual framework grounded in the research on applied critical leadership (Santamaria, 2013). It examines, highlights, celebrates, and makes transparent, the unique leadership of BWEL. Engaged to rebuke the silencing and marginalization of women educational leaders of color in the educational leadership discourse, this study bridges engages a multiple case study approach, phenomenological …
Development And Validation Of A Brief Assessment Of Social Cognitive Abilities, Ryanna Zenisek
Development And Validation Of A Brief Assessment Of Social Cognitive Abilities, Ryanna Zenisek
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
It has been consistently found that individuals with schizophrenia exhibit impairments across various social cognitive domains, including emotion processing, social perception, and theory of mind. These deficits have been found across illness stages and cannot be accounted for by clinical symptomatology or neurocognitive skills. Further, while it has been well established that there is a link between cognition and functional outcome, social cognition has been found to be uniquely related to functional impairment in the disorder. Despite this evidence, the field is currently lacking efficient ways to identify and characterize these deficits in clinical settings. The Brief Test of Social …
