In this study, a total of 365 cattle (234 male, 131 female) slaughtered in different localities in Thrace (The European part of Turkey) were examined for hypodermosis between January and May of 1997. Hypoderma bovis, H. lineatum and unidentified 2nd instar larvae were found in the skin and subcutaneous tissue of the back region of the animals. The prevalence rate and intensity of infestation were 3.56% and 10.23 respectively.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Blood group alleles and their frequencies were estimated within a Denizli fowl flock. Sixteen full sib family groups we- re formed to facilitate the identification of segregating alleles. Immune antisera were produced by means of reciprocal immunizati- ons between the parents. Reference reagents were obtained from W. E. Briles, Department of Biological Sciences, Northern Illino- is University. Reference reagents were used for the blood typing. In the flock in question, the allele genes which belong to blood group systems A, B, C, D, E and L were estimated and their frequencies calculated. In the A blood group system, A1 , …

Growth Performance And Feed Conversion Efficiency Of Siberian Sturgeon Juveniles (Acipenser Baeri) Reared In Concrete Raceways, Gülten Köksal, Feri̇t Rad, Mevlüt Kindir
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Culture of sturgeon species is of great economical and ecological importance for those countries whose natural stocks of Acipenseridae spp. have declined or been exterminated. Siberian sturgeon ( Acipenser baeri) is considered one of the most suitable sturgeon species for aquaculture. This study was carried out in order to introduce the Siberian sturgeon to Turkey as a potential candidate for aquaculture and to investigate the growth and feed conversion performance of this species in concrete raceways (flow- through system) used in rainbow trout farming. A growth trial was conducted using 1300, 75 days old Siberian sturgeon juveniles imported from France. …

Live material of the experiment consisted of 600 mixed sex day-old commercial (Avian Farm) broiler chicks. The experiment was held in six rooms with a randomly allocated control group and two treatment groups and their replicates. The birds were full fed ad libitum in the control group while the feeders were removed for three and six hours per day for the treatment I and treatment II groups respectively between the 5 ^th and 37 ^th days. Average live weights …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Modified tryptic soy broth, lauryl sulfate tryptose broth, modified EC broth, sorbitol MacConkey agar and Fluorocult E. coli O157 agar were tested for the recovery of 3 strains of Escherichia coliO157:H7 against E. colitype 1 and Citrobacter freundii as common competitive microflora of raw meat products. Two-stepped trials showed that modified EC broth and lauryl sulfate tryptose broth were superior to modified tryptic soy broth as selective enrichment media while sorbitol MacConkey agar was clearly better than Fluorocult E. coli O157 agar as a selective agar medium. Recovery of E. coli O157:H7 was difficult when selective enrichment broth-growing cohabitant microflora …

The present study was carried out to determine the diurnal feeding patterns of broiler chickens given a choice between ascorbic acid (AA) supplemented and unsupplemented feeds under heated or unheated conditions. Broiler chickens were offered supplemented (with 200 mg AA/kg feed) and unsupplemented feeds, and the feeding behaviour for each feed was monitored by continuous recording of the weight of the feed container for 4 days under unheated (UH) and the next 4 days under heated (H) conditions. The weight and timing of each meal was used to calculate cumulative feed intake, AA intake, number of meals, mean meal size …

A Mouse Model For Evaluating The Induction Of Liver Glucose-6- Phosphate Dehydrogenase By Halothane, Ergül Belge Kurutaş, İlhan Tuncer
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The effect of halothane anesthesia in different doses and a period of two weeks on glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) activity of mouse liver were investigated. The mean and SD of G6PDH for liver of normal mice were 0.036±0.017 U/mg protein and 1.756±0.814 U/g liver, respectively. Although there was histopathological damage in the liver, liver weights in treated mice increased significantly compared to control animals. Increasing the dosage of halothane inhalation induced liver G6PDH enzyme activity (U/g liver) by 84%, 42% and 4%, showing an inverse relation with the dose of halothane (0.25, 0.50, 1.00 cc twice daily for two weeks). Although …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, the monthly variation in the blood glucose level of Capoeta capoeta capoeta caught from Aras between August 1995 and June 1996 was determined. The average blood glucose level was determined to be 112.04±5.19 mg/dl in males and 106.32±9.68 mg/dl in females and 110.06±4.19 mg/dl in the population. The blood glucose level was highest (141.07±13.67 mg/dl) in April, and lowest (69.14±9.75 mg/dl) in September. It was deter- mined that the level of blood glucose was related to temperature and reproduction.

A positive correlation was observed between total mutation and the number of wings having mutations. In addition, the observed mutations were classified according to the size and the type of the mutations per wing. Chemicals used were ranked as Dichlorvos, Methyl parathion, Azamethyphos according to their genotoxic effects. The …

Role Of Vitamin E In Decreasing The Toxic Effect Of Digoxin, İsmai̇l Meral, Burhanetti̇n Baydaş, Fahri̇ Bayiroğlu, Hamdi̇ Uysal
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This experiment was carried out to evaluate the role of vitamin E in decreasing the toxic effect of digoxin. Electrocardiographic recordings of New Zealand rabbits which were treated with digoxin-only or digoxin+vitamin E were used. Recordings were obtained before and 24 hours after treatments. It was found that digoxin-only treatment caused a sinusoidal tachicardia without changing the durations or amplitudes of any wave on the trace. However, digoxin+vitamin E treatment did not produce any increase in heart rate. It was concluded that vitamin E injection along with digoxin injection might lower the toxic effect of digoxin. More studies are needed …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, HCN levels in 150 Sorghum halepense samples obtained from the province of Aydın during 3 different vegetation periods were determined. The analysis was carried out using spectrophotometry. According to the results of the analysis, average HCN levels during the tiller, flowering, and postflowering stages in Sorghum halepense leaves, were 460.8, 144.8, and 44.22 ppm respectively. It was concluded that HCN levels in Sorghum halepense growing in the province of Aydın would be toxic for herbivores during the tillers and flowering stages.
