This study was carried out in Kıvırcık ewes to increase reproductive performance and synchronize oestrus by using progestagen pessaries (40 mg FGA) and different doses of PMSG (0, 500 and 700 IU) during the breeding season. Free mating occurred in the herd and 76% of all births were completed in the first week. Fertility, single birth rates, fecundity and prolificacy in the three different groups were found to be 94.87%, 96.66% and 100.00%; 78.38%, 55.18% and 38.46% (P

One hundred and twenty thoroughbred breeder mares with endometritis or infertility were investigated for the detection of antibodies to Taylorella equigenitalis by the passive haemagglutination (PHA) test and ELISA between 1997 and 1999 in the Marmara region and the two tests were compared. Fifty-eight (48.33 %) of 120 sera were found to be positive by the PHA test and 52 (43.33%) by ELISA. 22 of the sera were found to be positive by the PHA test reacted at 1/64 titer, 27 at 1/128, 7 at 1/256 and 2 at 1/512 titer. Sera from 44 mares were positive in both tests. …

Six Different Models For Estimation Of Genetic Parameters And Breeding Values For Pre-Weaning And Post-Weaning Weights In Suckler Cattle, Zafer Ulutaş, Ioan Ap Dewi, Mustafa Saatci
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Estimates of (co)variance components and breeding values for pre-weaning (100-day) and post-weaning (300-day) weights were obtained for a commercial herd of Welsh Black cattle recorded from 1976 to 1996. Estimates were obtained from six animal models ranging from a model with only an additive direct effect to a model that also included an additive maternal effect, a maternal permanent environmental effect and a covariance between additive direct and additive maternal effects. The most appropriate model for 100-day weight, based on a likelihood ratio test, was a model with additive direct and additive maternal effects with no covariance between them, yielding …

The Anaesthetics Effects Of Quinaldine Sulphate And/Or Diazepam On Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax) Juveniles, Mahmut Yanar, Meti̇n Kumlu
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, the effects of an anaesthetic quinaldine sulphate (QS) and a muscle relaxant, diazepam (D), on sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) juveniles (8-9 g) were investigated. When used together with D, the anaesthetic effect of QS was significantly increased. The fish entered light anaesthesia at 15 ppm QS, as compared to 5 ppm QS + 1 ppm diazepam (D). Similarly, a deep anaesthesia level was reached at only 7.5 ppm QS + 1 ppm D as compared to 20 ppm of QS. The use of QS alone at high concentrations (7.5-25 ppm) increased mortality from 10% to 100%. Three hundred and twelve faecal specimens from dairy cattle farms free of clinically apparent diarrhoea were tested both for the presence of rotaviruses by PAGE silver staining and for Escherichia coli K99 and O157:H7 by latex agglutination using specific antisera after the growth of each colony. The enteropathogenic …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Cattle serum samples were examined for antibodies to parainfluenza type 3 (PI-3) virus using the hemaglutination-inhibition (HI) test. These sera were taken in autumn 1994 and spring 1995 from clinically healthy cattle in Malatya. Antibodies to PI-3 virus were detected in 897 out of 1000 cattle sera 89.7%. Reciprocal antibody titres to PI-3 virus in cattle ranged from 1:16 to 1:1024. It was determined that the proportion of seropositive sera in the cattle in the spring was higher than in the autumn.
