A Quantitative Model To Determine Factors Affecting Profits Of Broiler Enterprises, Yavuz Cevger, Cengi̇z Yalçin Jan 2003

A Quantitative Model To Determine Factors Affecting Profits Of Broiler Enterprises, Yavuz Cevger, Cengi̇z Yalçin

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the use of the profit function regression model as a decision support tool in commercial broiler production. The fact that the estimated impact factors affecting profitability on the profit per kg live-weight were similar to those observed in the field indicates the power of the model as a decision support tool in broiler production. Because the marginal impact of each independent variable on profit was the estimated coefficient value, they could simply be used to evaluate "what-if scenarios" and the risk of investment under changing circumstances in broiler production. It is, therefore, …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Giardia is a ubiquitously distributed flagellate protozoon that inhabits the small intestine of its host. In this paper, Giardia infection is reported in the gall bladder of an adult cow. Faecal samples from asymptomatic dairy cows and calves from several farms in Zara, Sivas, were studied by direct examination and the zinc sulphate flotation techniques. No Giardia cysts were found in 106 samples. In addition, the gall bladders of cattle provided from the slaughterhouse in Sivas were tested by direct and zinc sulphate flotation technique examination. Giardia trophozoites were found in 1.7% of the 56 gall bladders tested. This is …

Aortic Body Tumor In A Dog, Ayhan Atasever, Yücel Çam Jan 2003

Aortic Body Tumor In A Dog, Ayhan Atasever, Yücel Çam

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Aortic body tumors were investigated macroscopically and microscopically in a 2-year-old, clinically normal, male cross-breed dog. Two tumor masses measuring 4 x 4 x 3 cm in size were determined. One of them was located on the A. subclavia dextra and the other one was located on the A. carotis communis dextra and they adhered to the adventitia of these vessels. The tumor masses were encapsulated within a thin capsule and lobulated with yellowish-brown areas and were elastic in structure. Yellowish-white and red-brown focal areas were seen on the cut surface. In addition, a yellowish-white tumor mass measuring 2 x …

Aflatoxins that are toxic metabolites for human and animals were determined in some fish feed. Eighty-five unit samples taken from "fish farming processes", "feed factories" and "imported feeds" in 1998, 1999 and 2000 were analyzed. In the analysis, thin layer chromatography (TLC) and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique were used. Consequently, aflatoxin levels above 20 ppb were detected in 20 samples and from 21.2 to 42.4 ppb in 85 samples. In 22 samples aflatoxin levels from 5.0 to 20.0 ppb were detected. Aflatoxin B1 analysis was performed on all samples with aflatoxin levels of more than 20 ppb. Most …

The Presence, Isolation And Characterisation Of Galectin-1 In Bovine Adrenal Gland, Kami̇l Seyrek Jan 2003

The Presence, Isolation And Characterisation Of Galectin-1 In Bovine Adrenal Gland, Kami̇l Seyrek

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The mammalian adrenal gland in the developmental stage provides excellent system for studying the role(s) of lectins in the foetal period because the adrenal gland is composed of two separate endocrine organs which differ in embryologic origin, type of secretion, and function. There is no information on the presence of galectin-1 or galectin-1 reactive glycoconjugates in the development of the bovine adrenal gland. Therefore, the present study focused on this protein. For separation of galectin-1 dialysis, affinity chromatography and SDS-PAGE were used. To monitor the localisation of galectin-1 and its epitopes immunhistochemistry was used. A single 14-kD band comigrated with …
