The Effects Of Red Pepper, Marigold Flower, And Synthetic Astaxanthin On Pigmentation, Growth, And Proximate Composition Of Penaeus Semisulcatus, Mustafa Göçer, Mahmut Yanar, Meti̇n Kumlu, Yasemen Yanar

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Shrimps with an initial weight of 11.10 ± 0.26 g were fed diets supplemented with 6.6% red pepper (RP), 2.4% marigold flower (MF), and 100 mg/kg synthetic astaxanthin (SA), each of which contained 100 mg/kg total carotenoid, and a control diet (BD), without carotenoid supplement for 60 days. Dietary carotenoid sources did not significantly affect the growth of the shrimps (P > 0.05). SA supplementation yielded the highest survival rate (92%), followed by RP (82%) and the other diets (75%) (P < 0.05). All dietary carotenoid sources provided higher carotenoid accumulation compared to the control group (P < 0.05), but the difference between them was not significant (P > 0.05). RP and SA resulted in a greater protein increase in shrimp muscle than MF (P < 0.05); however, lipid, ash, and water content were similar in all diet groups (P > 0.05).

Three thousand six hundred fish (170 ± 2.6 g) were randomly allocated to experimental sea cages (approx. 5800 l) according to a 2 x 2 experimental plan [2 processing techniques: steam pelleted diet (P) vs. extruded diet (E); 2 feeding frequencies: twice (2) vs. 3 times (3)]. The P3 group consumed significantly (P < 0.05) more feed than the fish fed extruded diets, irrespective of feeding frequency. Growth rates of all groups did not display any significant difference (P > 0.05) in terms of final weight (FW) or specific growth rate (SGR), although there was a decreasing trend in final …

Demersal trawling in Turkish waters yields a considerable amount of by-catch and discard. Data presented in this study were collected during a demersal trawl codend selectivity trial carried out on board the RV Egesüf (27 m, 500 HP) between August 9 and September 4, 2002, in İzmir Bay. In total, 52 species of fish and invertebrate from 40 mm nominal mesh size commercially used PE codend and 24 mm cover were identified, separately weighed, and classified as commercial and non-commercial. In addition, for red mullet (Mullus barbatus), hake (Merluccius merluccius), common pandora (Pagellus erythrinus), axillary sea bream (Pagellus acarne), annular …
