Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Bacterial adherence to a suture material is one of the main causes of surgical site infections. An antibacterial suture material with enhanced wound healing function may protect the surgical site from infections. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the synergistic effect of propolis and biogenic metallic nanoparticles when combined with silk sutures for biomedical use.Materials and methods: Silver nanoparticle (AgNP) synthesis was carried out via a microbial-mediated biological route and impregnated on propolis-loaded silk sutures using an in situ process. Silk sutures fabricated with propolis and biosynthesized AgNPs (bioAgNP-propolis-coated sutures) were intensively characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), …

Update On Liver Transplantation-Newer Aspects, Rahşan Olga Meti̇n, Cem Şi̇mşek, Ahmet Ömür Gürakar

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Liver transplantation (LT) remains the only therapeutic option offering gold standard treatment for end-stage liver disease (ESLD) and acute liver failure (ALF), as well as for certain early-stage liver tumors. Currently, the greatest challenge facing LT is the simple fact that there are not enough adequate livers for all the potential patients that could benefit from LT. Despite efforts to expand the donor pool to include living and deceased donors, organ shortage is still a major problem in many countries. To solve this problem, the use of marginal liver grafts has become an inevitable choice. Although the definition of marginal …

Thiol-Disulfide Homeostasis: An Integrated Approach With Biochemical And Clinical Aspects, Özcan Erel, Serpi̇l Erdoğan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Dynamic thiol-disulfide homeostasis (TDH) is a new area has begun to attract more scrutiny. Dynamic TDH is reversal of thiol oxidation in proteins and represents the status of thiols (-SH) and disulfides (-S-S-). Organic compounds containing the sulfhydryl group is called thiol, composed of sulfur and hydrogen atoms. Disulfides are the most important class of dynamic, redox responsive covalent bonds build in between two thiol groups. For many years, thiol levels were analyzed by several methods. During last years, measurements of disulfide levels have been analyzed by a novel automated method, developed by Erel and Neselioglu. In this method, addition …

Background/aim: Hantavirus and Borrelia burgdorferi are two zoonotic agents that pose a great risk especially for people living in forest areas. This study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of hantavirus and B. burgdorferi in forest villages of Düzce and its relationship with sociodemographic features.Materials and methods: The presence of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against hantavirus and B. burgdorferi in serum samples was investigated via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Hantavirus IgG and B. burgdorferiIgM and IgG positivity was then validated by western blot (WB) method. Results: During the analyses,193 serum samples were tested. Eleven (6%) cases of …

In immunosuppressed patients, strongyloidiasis can be lifethreatening because of hyperinfection or dissemination. Therefore, diagnosis of S. stercoralis is important in immunosuppressed patients with chronic strongyloidiasis. In this study, our objective was to investigate the presence of S. stercoralis antibodies by an ELISA method in immunosuppressed patients. Materials and methods: A total of 100 immunosuppressed patients' sera were included in the study. Forty-two of the patients were receiving immunosuppressive therapies for cancer or being treated for hematopoietic malignancies, 38 of the patients were receiving immunosuppressive drugs for rheumatic diseases, 14 were receiving immunosuppressive therapies for liver transplantation. Two of the patients …
