Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Schiff-base-bearing new bis(thiosemicarbazone) derivatives were prepared from terephthalaldehyde and various thiosemicarbazides. FT--IR,$^{\, 1}$H NMR, $^{13}$C NMR, and UV--Vis spectroscopic methods and elemental analysis were used to elucidate the identification of the synthesized molecules. The in vitro antioxidant activity of the synthesized compounds was analysed with the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl free-radical-trapping process. The synthesized compounds exhibited lower antioxidant activity than the standard ascorbic acid. IC$_{50}$ values of the synthesized molecules measured from 3.81 $\pm $ 0.01 to 29.05 $\pm $ 0.11 $\mu$M. Among the synthesized compounds, compound 3 had the best antioxidant activity. Moreover, this study explained the structure--activity relationship of the …

When as-grown CNTs (1 and 4 wt%) were added into the PAN/PPy blends, disordered nanofibers were observed to form within the microstructure. To improve the interfacial properties of CNTs/PAN/PPy composites, CNTs were functionalized with H$_{2}$SO$_{4}$/HNO$_{3}$/HCl solution. The functionalized CNTs were well dispersed within the nanofibers and aligned along the direction of …

Effect Of Surfactant Types On Particle Size And Morphology Of Flame-Retardantzinc Borate Powder, Yeli̇z İpek

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Zinc borate is a boron-containing chemical material that is used to increase the flame retardancy of polymeric materials, dyes, cables, fabrics, carpets, and the internal parts of automobiles and planes. Commercially used zinc borate, which has the formula of 2ZnO· 3B$_{2}$ O$_{3}$· 7H$_{2}$ O, has a particle size between 10 and 20 μm. However, recent studies have shown that nanosized flame retardants have more superior flame retardancy and less negative effects on mechanical properties than microsized flame retardants. Nanosized flame retardants disperse more homogeneously and even low quantities are sufficient to provide high flame resistance. In this study, nano zinc …

Schiff base derivatives were designed to possess an heterocyclic moiety on one side to enhance the coordination ability towards metals. To investigate the biological assay of the newly synthesized compounds, their DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging, metal chelating, reducing power, antibacterial and DNA binding activities were tested. A6 (63.1%) showed the maximum free radical scavenging activity among all. However, compound P3 at concentration of 200 \textmu g/mL possessed the highest metal chelating (45.8%) activity and power of reduction. In addition, P3 and A6 showed antibacterial activity …

Magnetite Nanoparticles-Based Hydroxyl Radical Scavenging Activity Assay Ofantioxidants Using N, N-Dimethyl-P-Phenylenediamine Probe, Zi̇ya Can, Büşra Keski̇n, Ayşem Arda, Erol Erçağ, Mustafa Reşat Apak

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Excessive amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS), unless counterbalanced by antioxidants, can cause cellular damage under oxidative stress conditions; therefore, antioxidative defenses against ROS must be measured. With the development of nanotechnology, nanoparticles have found numerous applications in science, health, and industries. Magnetite nanoparticles (Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$:MNPs) have attracted attention because of their peroxidase-like activity. In this study, hydroxyl radicals (?OH) generated by MNPs-catalyzed degradation of H$_{2}$O$_{2}$ converted the N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DMPD) probe into its colored DMPD$^{•+}$ radical cation, which gave an absorbance maximum at λ = 553 nm. In the presence of antioxidants, $^{•}$OH was partly scavenged by antioxidants and produced less …

Synthesis, Characterization And Evaluation Of Antidengue Activity Of Enantiomeric Schiffbases Derived From S-Substituted Dithiocarbazate, Maqsood Maryam, Sang Loon Tan, Karen Ann Crouse, Mohamed Ibrahim Mohamed Tahir, Hui Yee Chee

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A series of Schiff bases have been successfully synthesized through the acid-catalyzed condensation of S-substituted dithiocarbazates and three enantiomerically pure monoterpenes, (1R)-(+)-camphor, (1S)-(-)-camphor, (1R)-(-)-camphorquinone, (1S)- (+)-camphorquinone, (R)-(-)-carvone and (S)-(+)-carvone. Spectroscopic results revealed that the Schiff bases containing camphor or carvone likely adopted an E-configuration along the characteristic imine bond while those containing camphorquinone assumed a Z-configuration. The antidengue potential of these compounds was evaluated based on DENV 2 caused cytopathic effect (CPE) reduction-based in vitro evaluation. The compounds were validated through secondary foci forming unit reduction assay (FFURA). Compounds were also tested for their cytotoxicity against Vero cells. The compounds …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

In this study, thin films of Co, Ni, Pd, and Pt were prepared on Co$_{3}$O$_{4}$ support material in pellet form using the direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering method for use as catalysts for hydrogen generation from NaBH4.Characterization of the catalysts was carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). According to cross-sectional SEM images, catalyst thicknesses were observed in the range of approximately 115.3-495.8 nm. The particle sizes were approximately 25.0, 21.4, 33.9, and 9.5 nm for Ni-Co$_{3}$O$_{4}$, Co-Co$_{3}$O$_{4}$, Pd-Co$_{3}$O$_{4}$, and Pt-Co$_{3}$O$_{4}$ catalysts, respectively. The increase in NaOH initial concentration provides an increase …
