Asian Americans, Latinos, And The Hana Center: Solidarity Through Community Organization In Northeastern Chicago, Janeth Montenegro Marquez
Asian Americans, Latinos, And The Hana Center: Solidarity Through Community Organization In Northeastern Chicago, Janeth Montenegro Marquez
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines how the history of exclusionary immigration laws against Chinese immigrants affected later immigration laws aimed at both new Asian and Latin Americans immigrants, with a focus on undocumented individuals from both geographic areas in the United States. The HANA Center, a Korean American nonprofit and immigration welcome center, located in Chicago, brings undocumented Asian Americans and Latinos together by creating an environment where the two can work together in their shared fight for immigration reform. Undocumented Latino voices are prominent in discourse around undocumentation in the United States, but undocumented Asian Americans are an equally important and …
Intimate Partner Violence, Socioeconomic Status, And The Media, Christianna Victoria Page
Intimate Partner Violence, Socioeconomic Status, And The Media, Christianna Victoria Page
Theses and Dissertations
News media’s communication of social issues can create societal pushes for policy change. This is true regarding femicide and violence against women. How news media communicate demographics such as socioeconomic status (SES) of intimate partner femicide (IPF) victims in a digital space is underexplored. This study is a thematic analysis analyzing how digital news articles communicate the SES of IPF victims. The sample for this study was taken from a population of digital news articles about IPF sources from ten major U.S.-based online news sites and analyzed 50 digital articles for news media’s communication of SES of victims. Results from …

Characterization Of The Autoinhibition Mechanism Of The Heterotrimeric Kinesin-2 Motor Protein Kif3a / Kif3 B, Caleb Ayooluwa Sawe
Characterization Of The Autoinhibition Mechanism Of The Heterotrimeric Kinesin-2 Motor Protein Kif3a / Kif3 B, Caleb Ayooluwa Sawe
Theses and Dissertations
Autoinhibition is a conserved mechanism regulating the motor proteins of the kinesin superfamily, which allows active motors to switch into an inactive state after cargo unloading. This regulation is generally believed to be an ATP conservation mechanism. Autoinhibition occurs when the motor molecule assumes a folded conformation in which the non-motor portions interact with, and thereby inhibit the activity of, the motor domains. This process is incompletely characterized in the heterotrimeric kinesin-2 motor (KIF3A/KIF3B), which is essential for mammalian anterograde intraflagellar transport and ciliogenesis. Furthermore, the physiological role that kinesin autoinhibition plays in cellular processes has only recently started to …

Changes In Rna Expression Of Hut78 Cells Resulting From The Hiv-1 Viral Protein R R77q Mutation, Joshua S. Ramsey
Theses and Dissertations
Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is the causative virus for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). AIDS is characterized by chronic inflammation and reduction of CD4+ T-cells in the blood. This leads to the patient becoming immunocompromised and much more susceptible to disease in general. Different phenotypes in the progression of AIDS have been observed in patients in either progressing to AIDS faster as a Rapid Progressor (RP), or slower as a Long-Term Non-Progressor (LTNP). Researching elements that result in the LTNP phenotype is of interest as it has the potential to offer alternative treatments and therapies to those suffering from …
Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Host Immunity In The Drosophila-Parasitoid System And Its Application In A Course-Based Research Experience, Ashley Waring-Sparks
Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Host Immunity In The Drosophila-Parasitoid System And Its Application In A Course-Based Research Experience, Ashley Waring-Sparks
Theses and Dissertations
A functional immune response is essential for the survival of all living organisms. The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster is a well-established model for studying host immunity as well as metabolic regulation during an immune response. Fruit fly larvae, in nature, are commonly infected by parasitoid wasps whose survival is dependent on the successful parasitization of their host. The immune response that the fly elicits toward the wasp egg is a primitive yet effective process. I characterized the genes induced by a host during infection, identified metabolites present in a host during infection, investigated the role of Ab in the cellular …
"Unraveling Shame": Therapy Experiences Of Religious Sexual Minority College Students, Audrey Louise Parker
"Unraveling Shame": Therapy Experiences Of Religious Sexual Minority College Students, Audrey Louise Parker
Theses and Dissertations
Sexual minority adolescents and adults experience higher rates of psychological risk factors and mental health disorders than their straight peers. As theorized by the minority stress model, this increased distress may be related to both external stressors (including discrimination and violence) and internal stressors (concealment, expectation of rejection, and internalized homonegativity). For some sexual minority individuals who also hold religious beliefs, conflict between their sexual orientation and religious beliefs may act as another stressor. Sexual minority adolescents and adults present to therapy at higher rates than their straight counterparts, and clients seeking help with religious and sexual conflict make up …
Structural Design And Synthesis Of Growth Factor Receptor Binding Protein 2 (Grb2) Stabilizing Small Molecule, Mahfuzul Hasan
Structural Design And Synthesis Of Growth Factor Receptor Binding Protein 2 (Grb2) Stabilizing Small Molecule, Mahfuzul Hasan
Theses and Dissertations
The growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) family is a potent inducer of cellular growth. Ligand binding to cognate receptors on plasma membrane induces receptor dimerization and activation, which in turn recruits intracellular molecules for downstream signal transduction. A key signaling pathway activated by growth factor (GF) receptors is the Ras signaling cascade that ultimately leads to cell proliferation. Activation of RTKs leads to the recruitment of adapter protein Grb2, which is constitutively bound to the mammalian homolog of drosophila son of sevenless (SOS), and a guanine exchange factor (GEF) for Ras. The recruitment of the Grb2-SOS complex by activated …

Dnssec Meets The Frontend: Usability Study Of Dnssec Status Indicator In Browser, Tyler Karren
Dnssec Meets The Frontend: Usability Study Of Dnssec Status Indicator In Browser, Tyler Karren
Theses and Dissertations
DNSSEC ensures the integrity of DNS data. DNSSEC however is not visible to the end user. We designed a DNSSEC status indicator tool that shows the DNSSEC validation statuses of the host being visited in the Web browser. We then conducted a usability study to evaluate the tool, gathering user behavior and feedback from 30 participants. The usability study revealed that users were able to make security conscious decisions based on context of the task, but the tool struggled to communicate that it was sharing the status of the validity of the name-to-IP-address resolution of visited websites. We hope that …
Numeracy, Consistency, And The Allais Paradox, Sean J. Mcginity
Numeracy, Consistency, And The Allais Paradox, Sean J. Mcginity
Theses and Dissertations
This paper explores the relations between mathematical abilities and preferences, preferences for consistency, and the Allais paradox. To answer this question, 144 participants completed a survey which measured objective numeracy, subjective numeracy, preference for consistency, and consistency of probabilistic choices. The results did not show the predicted relations where consistency would moderate the relations where subjective numeracy mediates the relations between objective numeracy and the consistency of probabilistic choices. The previously indicated relations where subjective numeracy simply mediated the relations between objective numeracy and probabilistic reasoning were also not replicated. While the hypotheses were not supported overall one interesting finding was …
A Grounded Theory Of Relational Masculinity In Brazil, Douglas M. Wendt
A Grounded Theory Of Relational Masculinity In Brazil, Douglas M. Wendt
Theses and Dissertations
Many societal problems in Brazil, including sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and fatherlessness, are said to be related to hegemonic masculine development, commonly known as toxic masculinity. Very little research has been conducted in Marriage and Family Therapy and related fields that explores masculinity in the context of family systems and within relational frameworks. Current research in this area focuses largely on the negative aspects of traditional masculinity that reinforce narrow stereotypes rather than highlight possibilities of relationally healthy masculine development. The aim of this study was to develop a constructivist grounded theory of relational masculinity in Brazil by interviewing …

Impact Of Farm And Producer Characteristics On The Adoption Of Best Management Practices Among Popcorn Producers In The United States, Benjamin Yeboah
Theses and Dissertations
Certain agricultural practices can negatively impact the environment, and thus experts developed a set of Best Management Practices (BMPs) to address these environmental risks and challenges from agriculture. The adoption of these BMPs have been recognized to safeguard the environment while also yielding economic advantages for agricultural producers. This study employed primary data obtained from popcorn producers in the United States to investigate the level of adoption of these BMPs among this group of producers. Additionally, various farm and producer characteristics were assessed to identify the factors that impact producers’ adoption levels of these practices. The BMP adoption index was …
Task Distillation: Transforming Reinforcement Learning Into Supervised Learning, Connor Wilhelm
Task Distillation: Transforming Reinforcement Learning Into Supervised Learning, Connor Wilhelm
Theses and Dissertations
Recent work in dataset distillation focuses on distilling supervised classification datasets into smaller, synthetic supervised datasets in order to reduce per-model costs of training, to provide interpretability, and to anonymize data. Distillation and its benefits can be extended to a wider array of tasks. We propose a generalization of dataset distillation, which we call task distillation. Using techniques similar to those used in dataset distillation, any learning task can be distilled into a compressed synthetic task. Task distillation allows for transmodal distillations, where a task of one modality is distilled into a synthetic task of another modality, allowing a more …
The Hangman, Not The Prince, Steve Hughes
The Hangman, Not The Prince, Steve Hughes
Theses and Dissertations
For the first time, contemporary records of the 1870s, 1880s and 1890s, including interviews with George Maledon, have been used to document that George Maledon, known for almost 150 years as “The Prince of Hangmen,” was, despite his contentions, not the hangman for all of the murderers executed in Fort Smith, Arkansas, between 1873 and 1896. Rather, his legendary status came as a result of his manipulation of sensationalist reporters who came to Fort Smith to witness the hangings and whose stories were reprinted around the country.
A Phenomenology Of Mental Health Practitioners’ Experiences With Low-Income Black Youth Seeking Mental Health Support In Massachusetts, Audrey A. Spataro
A Phenomenology Of Mental Health Practitioners’ Experiences With Low-Income Black Youth Seeking Mental Health Support In Massachusetts, Audrey A. Spataro
Theses and Dissertations
Prior research and recent statistics regarding Black youth help-seeking behaviors, use, and access to mental health services suggest that those students with the greatest need for mental health services cannot access them or experience barriers to access. Although educational stakeholders have supported implementing and using school-based mental health services to promote students' overall access to services, low-income Black youth are still underserved. Therefore, additional research was warranted exploring the barriers and facilitators associated with help-seeking behaviors, use, and access to mental healthcare services by low-income Black youth, emphasizing those elements that acted as facilitators and were outside previously identified individual …
Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Kills Staphylococcus Aureus In A Polyphosphate-Dependent Manner, Ritika Sujit Shah
Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Kills Staphylococcus Aureus In A Polyphosphate-Dependent Manner, Ritika Sujit Shah
Theses and Dissertations
Due to their frequent coexistence in many polymicrobial infections, including in patients with wounds and cystic fibrosis, recent studies have started to investigate how the opportunistic pathogens Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus interact with each other. P. aeruginosa rapidly outcompetes S. aureus under in vitro co-cultivation conditions, which is mediated by several of P. aeruginosa’s virulence factors. Here, we report that polyphosphate (polyP), an efficient stress defense system and virulence factor in P. aeruginosa, plays a role for the pathogen’s ability to inhibit and kill S. aureus in a contact-independent manner. We show that P. aeruginosa cells characterized by low …
Reexamination Of Public Four-Year Institution Administrator Attitudes In Arkansas Toward Two-Year College Education, Joseph L. Scott
Reexamination Of Public Four-Year Institution Administrator Attitudes In Arkansas Toward Two-Year College Education, Joseph L. Scott
Theses and Dissertations
Arkansas ranks toward the bottom of the nation in educational degree attainment. Barriers to degree attainment in Arkansas may be identified, in part, by the examination of four-year institution administrator viewpoints toward two-year college education. Examination of administrator attitudes toward two-year college education areas such as faculty, students, programs, administrators, facilities, and transfer/articulation processes may lead to a better understanding of the difficulties surrounding degree attainment. A modified version of The Junior College Attitude Survey was used to survey 255 higher education administrators from 11 Arkansas public four-year institutions of higher education about different areas of two-year college education. Overwhelmingly, …
The Moderating Influence Of Individual Differences Between Perceived Organizational Support And Effort, Michael Schneider
The Moderating Influence Of Individual Differences Between Perceived Organizational Support And Effort, Michael Schneider
Theses and Dissertations
Perceive organizational support has many benefits for employees. The purpose of the present study was to determine if any of the Big Five personality traits moderate the relationship between perceived organizational support and work effort. One hundred and forty-four employees were surveyed on Prolific to identify their levels of perceived organizational support, work effort, and each of the Big Five traits. Perceived organizational support significantly predicted work effort. None of the Big Five traits significantly moderated the relationship in this primarily remote-working sample. These findings suggest that employees of all personality profiles respond similarly to support from their organizations.
Facial Motion Augmented Identity Verification With Deep Neural Networks, Zheng Sun
Facial Motion Augmented Identity Verification With Deep Neural Networks, Zheng Sun
Theses and Dissertations
Identity verification is ubiquitous in our daily life. By verifying the user's identity, the authorization process grants the privilege to access resources or facilities or perform certain tasks. The traditional and most prevalent authentication method is the personal identification number (PIN) or password. While these knowledge-based credentials could be lost or stolen, human biometric-based verification technologies have become popular alternatives in recent years. Nowadays, more people are used to unlocking their smartphones using their fingerprint or face instead of the conventional passcode. However, these biometric approaches have their weaknesses. For example, fingerprints could be easily fabricated, and a photo or …
Examining Farmers' Perceptions Of Precision Agriculture Technologies And Their Interest In Conducting On-Farm Precision Experimentation, Reagen Tibbs
Theses and Dissertations
Precision agriculture technologies (PATs) have revolutionized the agriculture industry. These technologies have offered many benefits for farmers, including cost savings and higher yields through improved application of inputs (i.e., fertilizers and herbicides). PATs also allow farmers to conduct experiments through a process known as on-farm precision experimentation (OFPE). By conducting these experiments and collaborating with researchers, crop consultants, and extension agents, farmers can learn site-specific management practices to better address challenges on their operations. However, despite these benefits, adoption rates of PATs in the U.S. have barely eclipsed 50%. Furthermore, there may be some skepticism amongst farmers towards researchers who …
The Effects Of A High-Carbohydrate Versus A High-Fat Shake On Biomarkers Of Metabolism And Glycemic Control When Used To Interrupt A 38-Hour Fast: A Randomized Crossover Study, Landon S. Deru
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: The primary aim of this study was to determine the impact of various fast-interrupting shakes on markers of glycemic control including glucose, β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), insulin, glucagon, GLP-1, and GIP. Methods: Twenty-seven adults (12 female, 15 male) completed all three conditions of this study. One condition consisted of a 38-hour water-only fast, and the other two conditions were similar but the fasts were interrupted at 24 hours by either a high carbohydrate/low fat (HC/LF) or a low carbohydrate/high fat (LC/HF) shake. Results: The water only fast resulted in 135.3% more BHB compared to the HC/LF condition (t = 7.77, p < 0.0001) and 69.6% more compared to the LC/HF condition (t = 5.12, p < 0.0001). Conversely, the LC/HF condition exhibited a 38.8% higher BHB level than the HC/LF condition (t = 2.70, p = 0.0086). Additionally, the area under the curve (AUC) for glucose was 14.2% higher in the HC/LF condition than in the water condition (t = 6.23, p < 0.0001) and 6.9% higher compared to the LC/HF condition (t = 3.14, p = 0.0024), with the LC/HF condition yielding 7.8% more glucose than the water condition (t = 3.21, p = 0.0020). At the 25-hour mark, insulin and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) were significantly elevated in the HC/LF condition compared to the LC/HF condition (F = 3.84, p = 0.0002 and F = 2.27, p = 0.0244, respectively) and compared to the water condition (F = 7.00, p < 0.0001 and F = 9.96, p < 0.0001, respectively). Furthermore, insulin, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), and GIP were increased in the LC/HF condition compared to the water condition at 25 hours (F = 3.19, p = 0.0016, F = 2.43, p = 0.0158, and F = 12.13, p < 0.0001, respectively). Notably, glucagon concentrations at the 25-hour mark decreased in the HC/LF group compared to the LC/HF condition (F = 3.37, p = 0.0009). However, by the 38-hour time point, no statistically significant differences were observed among the conditions for any of the analyzed hormones. Conclusions: While a LC/HF shake does not mimic a fast completely, it does preserve some of the metabolic changes including elevated BHB and glucagon, and decreased glucose and insulin compared to a HC/LF shake.

Catalytic Hydrogenation Of Dimethyl Oxalate To Ethylene Glycol Using Silver Based Catalysts On Sba-15, Nicolas Edouard Gleason-Boure
Theses and Dissertations
Ethylene glycol (EG) is an important industrial chemical in the manufacturing of certain plastics. There is growing industrial interest in the production of dimethyl oxalate (DMO) from syngas, which can be hydrogenated to produce EG. Many studies have focused on the catalytic reduction of DMO using copper-based catalysts on silica supports, but fewer studies have been done on the effects of silver for this reaction. This work presents an in-depth study of silver catalysts prepared via various methods including incipient wetness impregnation, charge enhanced dry impregnation, and the use of various organic solvents. Reaction studies show that using pure methanol …
Elastic Sensing Skin For Monitoring Of Concrete Structures, Emmanuel Abiodun Ogunniyi
Elastic Sensing Skin For Monitoring Of Concrete Structures, Emmanuel Abiodun Ogunniyi
Theses and Dissertations
Soft elastomeric capacitors (SECs) are emerging as potential low-cost solutions for monitoring cracks and strains in concrete infrastructure, a crucial aspect of structural health monitoring. Effective long-term monitoring of civil infrastructure can reduce the risk of structural failures and potentially reduce the cost and frequency of inspections. However, deploying structural health monitoring (SHM) technologies for bridge monitoring is expensive, especially long-term, due to the density of sensors required to detect, localize, and quantify cracks. Previous research on soft elastomeric capacitors (SEC) has shown their viability for low-cost monitoring of cracks in transportation infrastructure. However, when deployed on concrete for strain …
