Clay minerals have widespread application in industry and play an important role in plant life (2, 17). It is the adsorptive capacity of clay which determines largely its importance to man (2). The purpose of this investigation is to interpret the mechanism of adsorption of the phosphate anion by the two clay minerals montmorillonite and kaolinite. This particular system was singled out for two reasons: 1. It has agricultural significance. 2. It is believed that if the particular phosphate adsorption mechanism is understood it will aid in an understanding of many other adsorption phenomena associated with clay.

A Study Of Fossil Resins In Huntington Canyon Coal, Ross D. Gardner

The object of this investigation was to determine whether or not a certain sample of raw resin, collected by Mr. Adriaan Nagelvoort from coal from Huntington Canyon, Emery County, Utah, could be separated into more than one fraction with each fraction having distinctly different properties. Three methods of separation were attempted: (l) Separation of specific gravity fractions, (2) separation by use of solvents, and (3) chromatographic separation. Properties determined as a means of establishing any differences in the resins were: solubility, softening points, acid numbers, and iodine numbers.

The carbethoxylation product of p-aminoacetophenone with diethyl carbonate by means of sodium amide has been proved to be ethyl p-acetylphenylcarbamate instead of ethyl p-aminobenzoylacetate. Thus the amino group was shown to be more active than the methyl ketonic. group tow ard carbethoxylation. Attempt at further carbethoxylation of this carbamate were unsuccessful.

This work is a study of the analytical applications of the chromatographic method, particularly as applied to inorganic qualitative analysis. It is divided into four parts as follows: (a) The main part of the work is a search of the common laboratory reagents, likely to be found in any beginning qualitative analysis laboratory, with the purpose of finding the best reagents for developing an invisible chromatogram on an adsoption column of activated alumina. It is the purpose of this thesis to prepare the way for further study and consideration of the Indian problem as presented on Standing Rock Indian Reservation. The material is largely from original sources gathered through years of work among the Indians and whites who remember the period 1874 - 1890. This paper was limited to those years because they mark an epoch in the relations of these people with our own. During the last two years, the author in the course of fulfilling class requirements in the Department of Sociology made a series of investigations into the social, economic, and political aspects of several towns and villages in Utah and Idaho. As a result, an interest developed in the process of social change within the social structure. Therefore, as a thesis problem, a community study of a small Mormon village analyzing social change in the institutions and mores was selected.
