John T. Caine, an adept leader in the national and local political arena, was one of the best known and most highly respected men in Utah during the territorial era. Very early in his life he assumed an active role in politics and became one of the early leaders of the Democratic Party in Utah. From the time of his initial election in 1882 as the territorial delegate until his retirement in 1893, he labored in behalf of his constituents. In the writings of mankind there are far more biographies of men than of women. In the histories of the lives of Utah's pioneers the biographical accounts of the pioneer men far outnumber those of pioneer women. Few of these men have been successful without the help of a woman, be she wife or mother, or both. This thesis concerns itself with one of these unsung help-mates.

Food habits of the Uinta ground squirrel were investigated on some open meadows on the south-east slope of Mt. Timpanogos. Special emphasis was placed on species of plants eaten; and preference of plants in relation to season, succulence, and phenology. Other investigations were made in reference to: parts of plants eaten, non-plant material eaten, daily and seasonal activities in relation to foraging, feeding procedures, and the relationship between plant cover and Uinta ground squirrel activity.

One of the more interesting and unique of the natural habitats in the state of Utah is its chaparral zone, extending along the western foothills of the Wasatch Range. The purpose of this study has been to make an analysis of the bird population of this region in order to determine the comparative abundance of the species, their seasonal distribution within the area, and their ecological preferences.

Agropyron spicatum (Pursh) Scribn, and Smith, an important forage grass distributed primarily throughout western United States and northward into Canada, exhibits considerable ecological, cytological, and genetic variation. Twenty-five populations of 100 plants each were scored to obtain data on morphological and ecological variation. Statistical analysis of the data from fourteen of the populations showed that correlations between awn divergence and length, rhizomes with number of culms, adn diameter with number of culms were inconsistent or not significant. However, the correltion between rhizomes and diameter was significant in all populations.

The preparation of decahydroquinoxaline by four different methods, with no determination of geometrical configuration made, was reported in the literature. The purpose of this thesis was to establish the geometrical configurations of the decahydroquinoxalines prepared by these four methods and to determine if, as the work of previous investigators suggested, the two pure isomers of decahydroquinoxaline isomerized, each giving an equilibrium mixture of both isomers. Decahydroquinoxaline was prepared by three of the four previously reported methods of preparation. The purpose of this study has been to write a biography on the life of the versatile William Wines Phelps in conjunction with his contributions to and influence on the issues and problems of Mormon Pioneer History from Kirtland, Ohio, to the Great Basin.
Prior to the year 1831, W.W. Phelps was active in the State of New York as an Anti-Masonic newspaper editor. The Anti-Masonic movement had grown out of the political enviornment that existed throughout the nation and especially in the State of New York during that period of time.

A study was made to determine the effects of variable levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium upon several species of pioneer and climax range grasses, and to determine if these grasses differ in their ability to grow when supplied with low levels of these nutrients. Five grasses were used. The climax grasses were Agropyron spicatum and Agropryon smithii, and the pioneer grasses were Aristida longiseta, Sporobous cryptandrus, and Oryzopsis hymenoides.

The purpose of this study was to characterize the catalytic activity of rhenium trioxide and rhenium trichloride as hydrogenation catalysts. Work was also undertaken to further study the catalytic properties of rhenium heptoxide. The activity of this latter compound had received some study in a previous project. A complete review of the literature has been made on the organic and inorganic chemistry of rhenium trioxide and rhenium trichloride. A survey of the literature on catalytic hydrogenation and the chemistry of rhenium heptoxide has also been included. Rhenium trioxide was prepared by three similar methods. Essential to the entire field of Organic Chemistry is the nature of the carbon to carbon bond. Our current concepts and guiding principles concerning it are almost solely constructed from aliphatic compounds, certain simple ring species, and aromatic systems. Except for special cases, aliphatic and aromatic types are felt to be mildly strained or free from internal tension while the alicylic small and medium ring compounds are the so-called strained molecules. These strained compounds involve bending back or compression of two of the four carbon bonds from an equilibrium position. Distortions of more complex origin occur in the paracyclophanes and …

In comparing the head of Pseudopanurgus with Anthophora and Apis, the general outline appears rather similar, the most significant variation being found on the posterior surface. Extending ventrally from the postoccipital suture to the dorsal wall of the proboscidial fossa is a suture known as the fused hypostomal suture. The hypostomal area is rather small and makes up only a small portion of the dorsal and lateral walls of the proboscidial fossa, the remainder being formed by the postgena. Three species of the Portulacaceae each infected by a Physoderma parasite were collected at several locations in Utah. The hosts have been identified as Claytonia lanceolata Pursh., Oreobroma pygmaeum (A. Gray) Howell, and Erocallis triphylla (S. Wats.) Rydb. Since our present knowledge of Physoderma on members of the Portulacaceae is meager, it seemed desirable to learn as much as possible about the parasite, its hosts, and the relationship between parasite and host. Plants of all three hosts activated from perennating organs were grown for extended periods of time under uniform conditions. Cold treatments were most successful in activating host perennating …

Chloroplasts of sugar beet leaves were subjected to treatment by heating, by incubation at pH 8.5 and pH 5.5, by incubation in ion low water, by sonic oscillation, by digestion with enzymes (lysozyme, pancreatin, and lipase), by extraction with digitonin, and by chemical compounds including 8-hydroxy-quinoline, sodium azide, zinc sulfate, phenyl mercuric acetate, potassium cyanide, 1-allylthiourea, 2,4-dinitrophenol, thymol, and p-chloromercuribenzoate. An investigation was made of the photoreduction of indigo carmine dye and flavin mononucleotide (FMN) by an illuminated sugar beet leaf homogenate in the presence of 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol dye (DPIP) and ascorbic acid. DPIP and ascorbate were absolutely required for the reaction. Reconstitution experiments indicated a requirement for a heat-labile factor present in the supernatant fluid following centrifugation of the leaf homogenate. This factor activated the photoreduction of indigo carmine more than 20 times. The photoreduction of FMN was activated 2 times by this factor. Studies on the stoichiometry of indigo carmine photoreduction revealed that one mole of ascorbate was photooxidized …

This paper will present a picture of the struggles of the Lemhis prior to and during their residency on the new reservation with a brief follow-up on their ultimate removal to the Fort Hall Reservation. Consideration will be given to the methods by which the Lemhis earned their living, gained their educations, and accomplished their personal conquests. Also included will be accounts of the Nez Perce and Bannock Wars as they related to the Lemhis.
