Since no writing is entirely objective, it is the contention of this thesis that Dr. Juanita Brooks and Dr. LeRoy R. Hafen, the most authoritative writers of the Southern Nevada and Southern Utah region, were greatly influenced in their writings by the folklore of the region and of the people. The two aspects of folklore which are most prominent in their writings are, first, those which treat the supernatural aspect of divine intervention, and, second, those which surround the struggle for survival.

Isaac Morley was born in 1786, in the Atlantic seaboard city of Salem, Massachusetts. He received the common school education provided by the New England Schools. When the time came for his marriage, he was founded in a trade and was a mature man. Like his father, Isaac learned the trade of cooper and wheelwright, learned to plant and sow, to reap a harvest, and to care for cattle and sheep.
He served his country with the Ohio Militia in the War of 1812. In 1830 he heard Mormon elders preach the gospel for the first time. He was convinced …

It was the writer's purpose to determine the reason students discontinued seminary before obtaining a fourth-year certificate from the Burley L. D. S. Seminary between the years 1961-1965. In addition to this, means of helping to solve the problems of the students who discontinued seminary were sought. Questionnaires were sent to 92 students who had discontinued seminary; a questionnaire was also given to 61 students who were still in seminary. The results of these questionnaires were tabulated by the Brigham Young University Data Processing Service. Of the 92 students who discontinued seminary and received questionnaires, 66 (70 per cent) were …

This study is a geographical description of a specific area at a particular point in history. The year 1869 was chosen for the study of the Wasatch Front because it is a datum point; something to work from. Following the completion of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869, the typically Mormon society at the Wasatch Front oasis began to be more rapidly integrated to the cultural and economic influences from the East. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has always possessed a vigorous concept of the value of education for its youth. Programs of religious instruction have encouraged the young people to further their understanding of religious concepts. In July, 1953, all of the Church educational institutions, except those in the islands of the Pacific, were combined into one organization and named The Unified Church School System. As of January 1, 1965 the Pacific Board of Education, which directed the Church schools in the Pacific Islands, was also incorporated into the aforementioned mother unit. This study contains the history of the Norwegian Mission from 1850 to 1920, during which time it was a part of the Scandinavian Mission. It also includes a history of the mission from 1920 to 1960, while it was an independent mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This thesis is a study of the attitudes of employed Latter-day Saint mothers and non-employed Latter-day Saint mothers toward the homemaking role and outside employment.
Two general hypotheses were tested. They were (1) employed Latter-day Saint mothers will have a more favorable attitude toward the homemaking role than non-employed mothers; and (2) employed Latter-day Saint mothers will have a more favorable attitude toward outside employment than non-employed mothers.

Forced convection heat transfer in the entrance region of tubes and ducts has been studied extensively since the pioneering work of Graetz. Most of the published solutions for axial flow heat transfer are based on the idealization of either fully established or uniform velocity profiles with developing temperature.

The object of this work was to investigate the effect that heat losses from the "insulated" face of thin foil heat flux meters has upon the sensitivity of heat flux meters. In the past it has been characteristic of any analysis done on heat flux meters to assume that the insulation on the back face of the foil was a perfect insulator and thereby neglect the effects of heat losses from this "insulated" face. The word hysteresis is derived from a Greek word meaning "to lag 'behind". As specifically applied to fluid flow around bodies with transient angles of attack in and near the stall region, "aerodynamic hysteresis" is used to describe the effect of delay in boundary layer separation and reattachment upon the lift, drag and pitching moment. Experimental work done on airfoils by H. Studer showed that for increasing angles of attack flow "separation is delayed to an angle of attack appreciably greater than that for a stationary airfoil. On the return movement, re-establishment of a smooth flow is also delayed." [1]* …

Within the genus Cercocarpus H.B.K., commonly called mountain mahogany, there are three species, C. monanus Raf., C. ledifolius Nutt., and C. intricatus S. Wats., that occupy rather distinct habitats in Utah. During the past two years a study of Cercocarpus populations growing throughout Utah has shown not only that hybridization does occur between all three species but that in some instances viable progeny are produced from these F1 hybrids. Despite rather severe isolation barriers, there is sufficient plasticity to permit inter-breeding under certain circumstances.
