Leonardite and lignite were carboxylated by the Kolbe-Schmitt reaction in order to increase the acidity and hence the cation exchange capacity. A larger carboxyl group content would increase solubility and effectiveness in commercial application such as a thinner for oil-well drilling fluids.
The carboxylation was performed in a heated autoclave under a high carbon dioxide pressure. The Kolbe-Schmitt reaction was used in an anhydrous medium and in a slurry medium and in a modification developed by Marasse using anhydrous potassium carbonate. The reaction material consisted of moisture free, fine powdered potassium salts of leonardite and lignite. Temperature was varied from …

Geologic And Limnologic History Of Glovers Pond, Northwestern New Jersey, J. Mark Erickson

Glovers Pond is a temperate, dimictic lake, 1.25 miles southwest of the town of Johnsonburg, Blairstown 7.5' Quadrangle, northwestern New Jersey. The Paleozoic Kittatinny, Jacksonburg, and Martinsburg Formations, in fault contact with each other, crop out in the vicinity of the lake. The lake has a maximum depth of 9.5 meters and occupies a glacially modified and dammed fault valley currently being infilled concentrically by .four types of sediment. Basim1ard these are: (1) peat, (2) marl, (3) "transitional", calcareous, organic-rich silt, and (4) gyttja. Glovers Pond is thermally and chemically stratified. The hypolimnion is undersaturated with CaCO3; tl1is prohibits deposition …

The Effects Of Groundwater Seepage On Stream Regimen : A Laboratory Study, Samuel S. Harrison

The effects of' groundwater seepage on the competence, bed rough ness, and water surface slope of small streams were studied in two laboratory fumes. The larger fume is 20 feet long, 3t feet wide, and 18 inches deep; the smaller flume is 12 feet long, 6 inches wide, and 10 inches deep. Both flumes are equipped so that groundwater seepage through the stream bed can be controlled and monitored.
In the absence of bedforms, upward (positive) seepage has little effect on stream competence or transport rate, even when quicksand conditions are reached. The decrease in effective grain density brought about …

The Geology Of The Newburg-South Westhope Oil Fields, Bottineau County, North Dakota, Hussein Marafi

The Newburg and South Westhope oil fields of the northeastern part of the Williston Basin are essentially one continuous secondary stratigraphic oil trap as determined by well log studies. The reservoir rocks in the two fields are carbonates present near the top of the Mississippian Ratcliffe interval and sandstone present in the basal unit of the Triassic Spearfish Formation. The two "pays” are separated by the post-Mississippian erosional unconformity which truncated the Ratcliffe beds.
The two fields are marked with depressions formed as a result of the dissolving of deep seated, presumably Devonian, salt beds and complementary gradual subsidence of …

The life history and population structure of goldeye, Hiodon alosoides (Rafinesque), in Moccasin Bay, Garrison Reservoir, North Dakota, were investigated during 1966 and 1967. This species had not been commercially exploited in this impoundment, but current populations indicate that a commercial fishery can be supported.
A gill net fished from the surface to the bottom captured 885 goldeye in 1966. Total-length, weight, and sex were recorded and scale samples collected. The length-frequency of the catch was plotted, and average rate of growth of seven year-classes was calculated by examination of scales from 365 fish. The purpose of tills study was to investigate the reversal and nonreversal shift learning of retardates as a function of mental age and the difficulty level of the cue dimension. Reversal shift learning is generally more rapid if the learner is capable of using a mediational approach to problem solving. Nonreversal shift learning occurs more readily if the learner employs a single-unit S-R approach to problem solving.
In the present study retarded subjects at three different ability levels learned a two-choice discrimination on the size dimension or the color dimension during original learning. The subjects were then randomly assigned to …

This study attempted to analyze and synthesize the opinions of a randomly selected sample of typewriting teachers pertaining to the development of composition skill at the typewriter, in first-year typewriting.
An opinionnaire was mailed to one hundred randomly selected secondary typewriting instructors and of the returns received, seventy- five were usable.
The findings of this study revealed the majority of teachers believed the following about composition at the typewriter:
1. A need exists for standards and guidelines in methodology and for a comprehensive booklet on developing composition skill.

The participating high schools in this study were those at Killdeer and Halliday in North Dakota. The Killdeer and Halliday ”A" and "B" basketball squads were used for the study. The Groups on each team were paired, on the basis of a matched pre-test, to within approximately one percentage point of each other.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether intrinsic or extrinsic motivation in practice has an effect as to the improvement of the percentage of free-throws made after an experimental period and, in addition, under game conditions.
