A Comparison Of Communication Between Friends And Strangers Under Oral And Written Conditions, Raymond F. Venzke

Theses and Dissertations

The primary goal of the communication process is to have the addressee understand the communicator's expressed thoughts or ideas. Three factors which have Been shown to be important are: the relationship between the communicator and addressee (Ferguson, 19^9), the amount of feedback (Leavitt and Mueller, 1951)» and the communication channels used (Duncan, 1969).

The present study attempted to determine if friends communicate more effectively than strangers and if oral communication in a condition permitting nonverbal communication and feedback was more effective than written communication.

Five sets of ten pictures of males were given to each subject. One friend was designated …

During treatment segments, time-out stimuli of either five-second or ten-second durations were delivered contingent upon the occurrence of each criterion stuttering behavior. Time-out stimuli consisted of a brief period of time during which the subject …

Effects Of Three Pre-Competition Meals Upon Subsequent Performance In A Two-Mile Run, Jeffrey D. Fair Aug 1974

Effects Of Three Pre-Competition Meals Upon Subsequent Performance In A Two-Mile Run, Jeffrey D. Fair

Theses and Dissertations

It has always been desired that the meal consumed prior to competition would enhance the athlete's performance. The problem is that no one knows how different pre-competition meals affect the performance of the athlete.

Sixty-eight Oklahoma State University football players ran a two-mile run after consuming one of four treatments-- steak and eggs, pancakes, oatmeal and eggs, and a control meal. Subjects were grouped by football position and blocked in fours based on a pre-test time. Subjects were assigned treatments randomly with each subject in each block having a different treatment. A questionnaire was filled out after testing by the …

The Treatment Of Anxiety In The Physically Disabled By Three Different Variations Of Systematic Desensitization, Robert H. O'Neill Aug 1974

The Treatment Of Anxiety In The Physically Disabled By Three Different Variations Of Systematic Desensitization, Robert H. O'Neill

Theses and Dissertations

Systematic desensitization has become a major technique for the direct removal of maladaptive anxiety. The basic method consists of pairing progressive muscle relaxation with the imagination of anxiety producing scenes. The scenes are arranged in a hierarchy with those scenes at the top eliciting little or no anxiety and those scenes at the bottom eliciting a great deal of anxiety. It has been hypothesized that the process of progressive muscle relaxation inhibits the development of anxiety in the presence of anxiety evoking stimuli and weakens the bond between those stimuli and the anxiety. Recently, several investigators have, suggested that any …

Biochemical Parameters Of Hereditary Chondrodysplasia In Mice, Trent D. Stephens Aug 1974

Biochemical Parameters Of Hereditary Chondrodysplasia In Mice, Trent D. Stephens

Theses and Dissertations

Cartilage from newborn mice homozygous for chondrodysplasia contains normal quantities of protein and chondroitin sulfate. Mutant fetal cartilage incorporates normal amounts of sulfate, glucose, and glucosamine. Overnight rinsing with water removes about 25% of the incorporated sulfur and existing uronic acid from mutant ribs and about 55% from mutant limbs. Control ribs and limbs are affected very little by such a rinse. The diffusability of chondroitin sulfate (represented by incorporated sulfur and uronic acid) may be due to a lack of covalent bond formation between chondroitin sulfate and collagen.

The Rating Of Sexual And Nonsexual Cartoons As A Function Of Repression-Sensitization, William J. Burns May 1974

The Rating Of Sexual And Nonsexual Cartoons As A Function Of Repression-Sensitization, William J. Burns

Theses and Dissertations

In the past ten years, since the revision of the Repression- Sensitization Scale (Byrne, Barry and Nelson, 1963) a growing number of investigators have attempted to relate the R-S scale to an approach- avoidance continuum of defensive behavior. The few studies that have used sexual stimuli to produce a threat response have not obtained very consistent results. The present study has focused on the relationship between the R-S scale and the humor rating of cartoons. Through the use of Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability scores, repressors were differentiated into defensive and nondefensive.

The independent variable involved the presentation of two types of …
