Elastin-Like Polypeptide As A Model To Study Intrinsically Disordered Proteins, Sadegh Majdi
Elastin-Like Polypeptide As A Model To Study Intrinsically Disordered Proteins, Sadegh Majdi
Theses and Dissertations
The elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) is a well-studied structural protein that is easily amenable to amino acid (AA) sequence modifications and has the potential to yield a wide variety of uses in bioengineering and biomedical applications. One unique property of ELP is the inclusion of intrinsically disordered domains (IDP) within the structure that allow for its diversity of physical properties. While it is generally understood that amino acid sequence dictates protein folding arrangements, the contributions of specific amino acid sequences to the intrinsic disorder of ELP has yet to be fully resolved. Therefore, identifying the contributions of specific amino acid sequences …
Unveiling The Unique Ras Isoform And Domain Specific Regulation Of Braf Kinase, Tarah Trebino
Unveiling The Unique Ras Isoform And Domain Specific Regulation Of Braf Kinase, Tarah Trebino
Theses and Dissertations
BRAF kinase is a key member of the MAPK pathway, important for cell growth and division. Upstream signals promote BRAF activation by interaction with the membrane bound GTPase, RAS, which leads to relief of autoinhibition and dimerization. The N-terminal regulatory domains of BRAF, including the BRAF specific region (BSR), the RAS binding domain (RBD), and the cysteine rich domain (CRD), govern the conformational state of the cytosolic, autoinhibited monomer and drive the RAS-RAF interaction. Active BRAF phosphorylates and activates its substrate MEK, which in turn phosphorylates and activates ERK. Mutations in RAS and BRAF are the cause of many cancers …

Investigation Of Machine Learning Driven Adaptive Control Strategy For Heat Exchanger Under Varying Fouling Conditions, Reshma Madhu Pk
Theses and Dissertations
Fouling is an undesirable and inevitable phenomenon that affects Heat Exchanger (HE) dynamics, increases maintenance cost (>50%), and loss of production. Conventional fouling prediction and control techniques demand an in-depth understanding of the HE-specific fouling dynamics. Hence, machine learning emerges as an ideal tool for learning the fouling process from the available measurement dataset.
The proposed work aims to design a machine learning-driven adaptive control technique for an industrial HE, subjected to varying fouling conditions. Naphtha cooler, an industrial HE utilized in petroleum refineries, employs cooling water to lower Naphtha temperature, but the high impurities in the recycled cooling …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Bio Based Amphiphilic Molecules, Vandana Singh
Synthesis And Characterization Of Bio Based Amphiphilic Molecules, Vandana Singh
Theses and Dissertations
Among various molecular self-assemblies, low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs), that can form gels in organic solvents/water/oils, have gained much research attention due to their huge potential applications. Generally, gels are soft nanomaterials formed by the self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules into a three-dimensional fibrous network entrapping the solvent.
As these gels are formed by self-assembly via non-covalent interactions they are reversible and differ from macromolecular gels. To synthesize LMWGs, biomolecules such as fats, oils, fatty acids, lignocelluloses, sugars, amino acids, and peptides are commonly used as their inherent property favors self-assembly. In the current scenario, interest in synthesizing bio-based gelators has …

Theses and Dissertations
Disputes within the construction industry have caused parties to incur additional costs not accounted for. In fact, one of the notorious reasons for disputes can be attributed to Extension of Time (EOT) claim submissions. Such is due to its susceptibility to the human factor. Accordingly, there is a need to diminish reliance on the human factor in the EOT process and to bolster it with commodities of the industrial revolution 4.0. While research efforts have endeavored in tackling the drawbacks of the EOT claim process individually, no superior solution is provided to overcome all drawbacks at once. Initially, the literature …

Open System Neural Networks, Bradley Hatch
Open System Neural Networks, Bradley Hatch
Theses and Dissertations
Recent advances in self-supervised learning have made it possible to reuse information-rich models that have been generally pre-trained on massive amounts of data for other downstream tasks. But the pre-training process can be drastically different from the fine-tuning training process, which can lead to inefficient learning. We address this disconnect in training dynamics by structuring the learning process like an open system in thermodynamics. Open systems can achieve a steady state when low-entropy inputs are converted to high-entropy outputs. We modify the the model and the learning process to mimic this behavior, and attend more to elements of the input …
Cancer Treatment By Targeting Hdac4 Translocation Induced By Microsecond Pulsed Electric Field Exposure: Mechanistic Insights Through Kinases And Phosphatases, Zahra Safaei
Theses and Dissertations
Epigenetic modifications, arising from sub-cellular shifts in histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity and localization, present promising strategies for diverse cancer treatments. HDACs, enzymes responsible for post-translational histone modifications, induce these epigenetic changes by removing acetyl groups from ε-N-acetyl-lysine residues on histones, thereby suppressing gene transcription. Within the HDAC group, class IIa HDACs are notable for their responsiveness to extracellular signals, bridging the gap between external stimuli, plasma membrane, and genome through nuclear-cytoplasmic translocation. This localization offers two significant mechanisms for cancer treatment: nuclear accumulation of HDACs represses oncogenic transcription factors, such as myocyte-specific enhancer factor 2C (MEF2C), triggering various cell death …
