Examination Of The Therapeutic Process In A Juvenile Probation Setting And Further Validation Of The Group Assessment Of Interpersonal Traits (Gait), Douglas D. Knowlton
Theses and Dissertations
The present study was undertaken to examine several questions ranging from simple, direct, detailed examination of juvenile probation officer behavior in a county juvenile court system, to a more technical question—Does this study provide additional validation of the Group Assessment of Interpersonal Traits? In addition, the study locks at the relationship between probation officer's verbal behaviors and their ratings of Therapist Talent.
Twelve juvenile probation officers (full-time and volunteer) and their probationers agreed to have four individual sessions audio recorded. Randomly selected segments of these tapes were rated by two sets of raters. Their verbal behaviors were categorized and ratings …
Learned Helplessness: Affect In Relation To Facilitation And Interference Effects, Thomas R. Foster
Learned Helplessness: Affect In Relation To Facilitation And Interference Effects, Thomas R. Foster
Theses and Dissertations
Learned helplessness is an experimental analogue of depression. In ess;ence learned helplessness theory states that exposure to noncontingent feedback leads to changes in self esteem, performance and affect. Brief exposure to noncontingent feedback is thought to cause increases in anxiety and/or hostility and these motivational changes are thought to facilitate subsequent performance. Extended exposure to noncontingent feedback is thought to cause decreases in self esteem and increases in depression and these motivational changes are thought to be associated with subsequent impaired performance.
One hundred and twelve undergraduate students participated in a six group experiment with groups receiving either contingent or …
A Survey Of Vocal Characteristics In A Sample Of Adult Rheumatoid Arthritics, Janine B. Chenier
A Survey Of Vocal Characteristics In A Sample Of Adult Rheumatoid Arthritics, Janine B. Chenier
Theses and Dissertations
The normalcy of voicing at the level of the larynx is dependent upon the competency of the cricoarytenoid joints to which the vocal folds are attached. Rheumatoid involvement of this diarthrodial joint could result in reduced mobility or fixation of the fold(s).
Medical authors hold differing opinions of the nature and frequency of voice change due to the pathology known as cricoarytenoiditis. The term "hoarse" has been widely used to describe the characteristic alteration of phonation in a population of rheumatoid arthritics.
It was the purpose of this study to survey a sample of adult rheumatoid arthritics in order to …
A Study Of Friedrich Durrenmatt's Hero In Romulus Der Grosse, Der Besuch Der Alten Dame, And Die Physiker, Helen Weber Hausler
A Study Of Friedrich Durrenmatt's Hero In Romulus Der Grosse, Der Besuch Der Alten Dame, And Die Physiker, Helen Weber Hausler
Theses and Dissertations
The fact that Durrenmatt is a writer of Komodien is well-known. He maintains that in depicting the present, comic elements must be used in order to create distance between the action on the stage and the audience. This does not mean that the tragic is entirely impossible, but rather that a portrayal of the tragic can only be attained through the comedy. And indeed the outcome of a Durrenmatt Komodie better resembles that of the tragedy than that of the comedy. Keeping in mind that there is then a mixture of the comic and the tragic, it is the purpose …

Aspects Of Sedimentology And Fluvial Morphology Of A Part Of The Little Missouri River, North Dakota, Paul C. Jeffcoat-Sacco
Theses and Dissertations
The Little Missouri River drains 21,500 km in Wyoming, Montana, and the Dakotas- The river is perpetually muddy, although the bulk of its deposits are fine to medium silty sand. The discharge ranges between 0 and 3000 m^/s, with a mean value of approximately 17 m'Vs.
Between Medora, North Dakota and Lake Sakakawea 250 km downstream, the river changes from meandering to braided. Braiding may be a transitory response to the decrease in discharge following the spring flood, although more likely braiding is the result of post-glacial changes in drainage, when the river was diverted eastward from its original course. …

Don Diego De Silva: Spanish American Ambassador In England, 1564-1568, Jack K. Nielsen
Theses and Dissertations
A resident ambassador in the late sixteenth century faced many challenges, among which were: gathering, evaluating, and relaying useful information; performing negotiations on behalf of his principal; and calming troubled waters at the foreign court. The way in which he .faced these challenges determined the extent of the ambassador's success.
Jon Jiego Guzman de Silva, Spanish ambassador in Zngland .from 1564-1568, faced these challenges and others because he was a staunch Catholic at a Protestant court. Although he was able to maintain his position at court for four years, he was not totally successful. He forwarded much useful and correct …

Relative Hemispheric Involvement During Arousal And Inhibition Of Affect, Steven L. Shearer
Relative Hemispheric Involvement During Arousal And Inhibition Of Affect, Steven L. Shearer
Theses and Dissertations
The predominant view of hemispheric contributions to emotional ity focuses upon the inherent emotionality of the right hemisphere, in contrast to the logical, rational, nonemotional characteristics of the left hemisphere. However, recent research has also implicated contri butions of the left hemisphere during affective arousal (d'Elia & Perris, 1973, 1974; Ehrlichman & Wiener, Notes 10, 11; Harman & Ray, 1977; Tucker, Antes, Stenslie & Barnhardt, 1978; Tucker, Roth & Shearer, Note 7). Some reports have implicated the left hemisphere in negative affect (Ehrlichman & Wiener, Notes 10, 11; Harman & Ray, 1977), and the right hemisphere in positive affect (Ehrlichman …

Acid Catalyzed Nonhydrogenative Depolymerization Of Lignite, James B. Kiefer
Theses and Dissertations
Catalytic non-hydrogenative depolymerization of North Dakota lignite was investigated by reacting it with phenol in the presence of an acid catalyst. Three catalysts were examined: calcined activated carbon, p-toluene sulfonic acid, and methane sulfonic acid. The order of effectiveness of these catalysts in decreasing order, based on yield is: methane sulfonic acid, p-toluene sulfonic acid, and activated carbon. The products were characterized by elemental analysis, molecular weight distribution, and infrared spectroscopy. The NMR was used to determine the relative differences in aromatic character between the products. Properties of the products were determined to be functions of reaction conditions. The structures …

Distribution Of Five Elements In Lignite Liquefaction Process Streams, Val Brubaker Carver
Distribution Of Five Elements In Lignite Liquefaction Process Streams, Val Brubaker Carver
Theses and Dissertations
An investigation into the distribution of the five elements aluminum, chlorine, magnesium, manganese, and sodium was performed on the Project Lignite Coal Liquefaction Process Development Unit (PDU). Determinations of the concentrations of these elements in major flow streams were accomplished by both Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) and Atomic Absorption (AA) methods of analysis. Element concentrations and process streams flow rate data were used to calculate element material balances for each element analyzed on four different process runs.
Concluded from the results was that reasonable elemental balances were obtained for most of the elements by analyzing the major flow streams. This …
Breeding Behavior And Reproductive Success Of Chipping Sparrows In Northwestern Minnesota, Mary E. Keller
Breeding Behavior And Reproductive Success Of Chipping Sparrows In Northwestern Minnesota, Mary E. Keller
Theses and Dissertations
The reproductive biology of Chipping Sparrows (Spizella passerina) was studied during 2 breeding seasons at the University of Minnesota Forestry and Biology Station, Itasca State Park, Minnesota. Reproductive success was determined primarily by the incidence of nest predation. Parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) caused a comparatively smaller loss in reproductive success. Four pairs raised two broods in one season. Males assumed nearly all care of first brood fledglings, freeing the female to build a second nest. This strategy of parental care may improve the chances of a pair having a second brood.
Pair relationships were typically monogamous. One of …

Reproductive Isolating Mechanisms And Communication In Greater Prairie Chickens (Tympanuchus Cupido) And Sharp-Tailed Grouse (Pedioecetes Phasianellus), Donald W. Sparling Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Sympatric populations of greater prairie chickens (Tympanuchus cupido) and sharp-tailed grouse (Pedioecetes phasianel lus) were studied between 1975 and 1978 in northwestern Minnesota for the pur poses of identifying and determining the strength of reproductive isolating mechanisms between them. Major emphasis was placed on ethological mechanisms but other factors were also examined.
Approximately a fifth of the sharptail’s distribution overlaps half of the prairie chicken’s within North America. Within the zone of sympatry, prairie chicken populations are in small patches and may be liable to hybrid swarming, particularly with changes in land-use practices. The rate cf hybridization is around 1% …
