The Test Of English As A Foreign Language Sample Test As A Measure Of Adolescent Language Ability, Paul Gardiner Osborn Jan 1988

The Test Of English As A Foreign Language Sample Test As A Measure Of Adolescent Language Ability, Paul Gardiner Osborn

Theses and Dissertations

Relative performance on the Test of English as a Foreign Language Sample Test (TOEFL-ST) was explored in sixty native English speaking high school students. Subjects also were administered the Fullerton Language Test for Adolescents and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test Revised. The TOEFL-ST was not difficult for this population, indicating that TOEFL tests taken by foreign speaking college students probably assess a level of native English competency well below the high school level. The three tests, including subtests, appear to measure a wide array of subdomains of language competency. The data do not support the conclusion that any of these …

Minerva Teichert's Murals: The Motivation For Her Large-Scale Production, Marian Eastwood Wardle Jan 1988

Minerva Teichert's Murals: The Motivation For Her Large-Scale Production, Marian Eastwood Wardle

Theses and Dissertations

It is my thesis that the impetus for Minerva Teichert's prolific mural production came from the lofty ideals of the Beaux Art mural tradition which she encountered and embraced during her studies at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1909 to 1912. Furthermore, it was the great interest in mural decoration during the 1930s, spurred by government patronage, that provided Teichert with the opportunity to apply these ideals to large-scale works.
Research into the Beaux Art mural tradition has been difficult, as recent scholarship on the subject is negligible. An understanding of this early mural movement however, yields a greater …

A Demographic Examination Of Household Heads In Salt Lake City, Utah, 1850-1870, Larry W. Draper Jan 1988

A Demographic Examination Of Household Heads In Salt Lake City, Utah, 1850-1870, Larry W. Draper

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the demographic characteristics of household heads in Salt Lake City, Utah at three points in its history: 1850, 1860, and 1870. Data was compiled on population growth, nativity, sex, age, occupation, wealth, and persistence from the United States Census for those years.

The data shows that between 1850 and 1870 the makeup of Salt Lake City household heads changed dramatically from predominately American-born to predominately foreign-born. This change in the nativity of household heads over time significantly influenced several demographic characteristics including the location of immigrant settlement, occupational tendencies, and a high level of stratification of real …

Wait Time: A Contributing Factor In Sex-Related Differences In Mathematics Instruction, Gwendolyn Sharpe Jan 1988

Wait Time: A Contributing Factor In Sex-Related Differences In Mathematics Instruction, Gwendolyn Sharpe

Theses and Dissertations

Four intact first year algebra classes and two teachers in a rural county of Georgia served as subjects for this study on wait time. The students were identified as high, medium, and low academic achievers on the basis of their performance on the math portion of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. Wait time was measured from the video camera-recorded teaching sessions. Based upon the results of t-tests, no significant difference was found between the mean wait times given to boys and girls. An analysis of variance indicated significant differences among achievement levels. Low and high achievers were given more …

Work Energy And The Character Of Organizations: An Orgonomic Framework For Organization Development, Martin D. Goldberg Jan 1988

Work Energy And The Character Of Organizations: An Orgonomic Framework For Organization Development, Martin D. Goldberg

Theses and Dissertations

To date, the field of organization development (OD) has lacked the kind of unifying approach to theory and practice that would enable it to be considered a discipline. The present study, in conception and methodology, commences building a unified framework for OD based on the work of psychiatrist and natural scientist Wilhelm Reich (1897-1957). By conceptually merging the field of OD with the science of orgonomy, that body of knowledge based on Reich's discoveries, this project lays the foundations for a comprehensive theory that can lead to greater understanding of the nature, development, and functioning of organizations, a theory with …

County-Level Land Use Planning Policies And Regulations Impacting The Pattern Of Settlement In Utah County, Utah, Erik A. Johnson Jan 1988

County-Level Land Use Planning Policies And Regulations Impacting The Pattern Of Settlement In Utah County, Utah, Erik A. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Utah County has the second largest county population in the State of Utah and ranks 16th out of 29 in total land area. Over 90% of the County's quarter of a million residents live in the area known as Utah Valley, a relatively narrow strip of land situated between the Wasatch Mountains and Utah Lake. In addition to a large population, most of which was realized during the 1970s, Utah Valley also contains the bulk of the County's important agricultural land. Not surprisingly, the expanding population in Utah Valley has created competition between agricultural and urban uses for limited land …

Theses and Dissertations

Thomas Bullock was intimately associated with leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for more than twenty-five years. He served twenty-one years in the Church Historian's office and also clerked in many city, county, and territorial positions, acting as scribe, clerk, and personal secretary to Joseph Smith Jr., Brigham Young, Willard Richards, and the Twelve Apostles. His was a critical role in not only recording the history, but also in the gathering and preservation of historical documents. As a clerk …

Corticosteroid Effects And Senescence In Cultured Endothelium, Stephen A. Gudas Jan 1988

Corticosteroid Effects And Senescence In Cultured Endothelium, Stephen A. Gudas

Theses and Dissertations

Cultures of human umbilical vein endothelial cells were treated with heparin-corticosteroid combinations to determine effects on cellular growth. Standard proliferation assays, colony formation assays, and cytoflourometric analysis were the methods employed. Dexamethasone (DEX) and hydrocortisone (HC) were inhibitory to growth of HUVEC when EtOH was used as a solvent and fully supplemented medium (20% serum) was employed. When DMSO was the solvent, growth enhancement sometimes occurred when (DEX) was the test steroid; growth inhibition occurred with this steroid when a reduced (1%) serum component was used. Since significant inhibition of cell colony formation in response to DEX administration was observed, …

The Effect Of Man On The Landscape And The Effect Of Land On The Manscape: Or Contingent Plans For Knowing A Mountain, Taylor Scott Baldwin Jan 1988

The Effect Of Man On The Landscape And The Effect Of Land On The Manscape: Or Contingent Plans For Knowing A Mountain, Taylor Scott Baldwin

Theses and Dissertations

In my artistic practice, I emphasize personal and pan-cultural anxieties regarding civilization and the environment as an impetus for work in sculpture, video, and drawing. By locating marginal microcosmic subject matter that tellingly exhibits macrocosmic global dread, I seek to capture and distill our overwhelming eco-socio-political anxiety into a portrait of a society at a point in its history when the specter of nameless impending disaster weighs pressingly on the collective psyche. This thesis is supplementary to my work of sculpture in the Graduate School of the Arts Thesis Exhibition at the Anderson Gallery opening on April 27th, 2007. The …

Columbus' Combative Editor: Julian Larose Harris Versus The Klan In Georgia, 1921-1929, Michael L. Regnier

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the apparent ease and gaiety of life in America in the 1920's. there were seamier sides to society. One aspect of the seamy side was race relations. However, Columbus, Georgia, can lay claim to a bright spot in the darkness, the presence of Julian LaRose Harris as owner/editor of The Columbus Enquirer-Sun. Harris became the first, and for a while the only, newspaper man to openly criticize the Ku Klux Klan for Its program of terror and secrecy. Not only did other Georgia dallies follow his lead, but the local chapter of the Klan disbanded for a time in …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Family Characteristics And Standardized Test Scores In Reading Comprehension And Mathematics Concepts, Carolyn H. Hemmings Jan 1988

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Family Characteristics And Standardized Test Scores In Reading Comprehension And Mathematics Concepts, Carolyn H. Hemmings

Theses and Dissertations

Standardized testing ln the public school has become a crucial issue during this decade as more testing ls effected ln all grade levels, even to the extent that promotion to first grade may depend on a child/s standardized performance. Previous research has shown parent involvement ,, to be a factor which contributes to grade point averages; therefore, this study was developed to address the possibility of a correlation between parent involvement and successful standardized test scores.

Eighty-four parents of fifth-grade students in a selected county in Georgia were surveyed to determine their involvement in their child's public school education. Total …
