To determine the relationship between home environment and mathematics achievement the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient were computed, There was a positive correlation between home environment and mathematics achievement, significant at the ,01 level for all students, for male students, for female students, and for black students. The correlation coefficient was significant …
Encouraging A Positive Self-Image, Lois W. Atkins
Encouraging A Positive Self-Image, Lois W. Atkins
Theses and Dissertations
This project was designed as a workshop to teach a method of encouraging better self-images in students. A series of self-improvement imagery exercises are outlined. Steps include choosing goals; writing them in behavioral terms and specific measurable outcomes; and using self-recording, self-reward and self-punishment. By aiding students early in their school career to develop positive self-concepts, good work habits, and high motivation, ultimately a lower dropout rate and higher percentages of self-actualized persons is visualized.

A Chronicle Of Professional Baseball In Columbus, Georgia: 1885-1987, William W. Ridenour
Theses and Dissertations
The history of professional baseball in Columbus, Georgia, is a long and varied one. Columbus has been in professional baseball longer than most cities in the United States and its history is filled with both success and failure. National events such as wars and depressions have affected baseball in Columbus as have changes within the community itself. Attendance at professional baseball games in Columbus has varied from excellent to poor and the success of the local franchise has varied with attendance. Probably the major factor affecting professional baseball in recent years has been the increased use of television to broadcast …
Differences In The. Reading And Mathematics Achievement Between Asian American And Non Asian American Children, Linda B. Price
Differences In The. Reading And Mathematics Achievement Between Asian American And Non Asian American Children, Linda B. Price
Theses and Dissertations
Explanations for the achievement or overachievement of Asian Americans are often conflicting and subject to debate among researchers. Four major theories for this achievement are explored in the review of literature. One of these theories concerns the idea that Asian American's beliefs are the result of Confucianism and its influence on the lives of Asian Americans. Another theory examines the parent's positive attitude toward education and its influence on achievement. A third theory suggests that Asian American babies are more alert and sensitive at birth. The final theory examined proposes that the Asian American immigration to the United States is …

Thirty novels were found to have protagonists who demonstrated good thinking abilities in several of the ways targeted by the NCTE publication "Essentials in English." Characters' demonstration of specific thinking skills was noted on an identification …
Anti-Mormon Pamphleteering In Great Britain, 1837-1860, Craig L. Foster
Anti-Mormon Pamphleteering In Great Britain, 1837-1860, Craig L. Foster
Theses and Dissertations
The introduction of Mormonism into Great Britain was met with both success and resistence. The major form of British resistence to the Latter-day Saints was through the press. From the introduction of the Church into Great Britain in 1837 to 1860, numerous anti-Mormon pamphlets were published to discourage people from associating with what was considered to be a strange American sect.
The major themes of a number of these tracts have been analyzed in order to gain a better understanding of how the Mormons were perceived by the British. Some of the major themes included the evil character of Joseph …
A Hermeneutic Of Sacred Texts: Historicism, Revisionism, Positivism, And The Bible And Book Of Mormon, Alan Goff
Theses and Dissertations
As methods by which texts are to be understood, positivism and historicism have a long tradition and continue to exert wide influence in all academic disciplines. Other approaches to textual concerns have recently emerged to challenge the dominance of these two approaches. Foremost among these new approaches are hermeneutics and deconstruction. Both of the latter approaches recognize that interpretation is inescapable. The latter challenges even the possibility of determinate meaning. A theoretical discussion of historicism and positivism uncovers questionable and troublesome difficulties. Hermeneutics in its conservative or radical variations overcomes the difficulties of interpretation that positivism and historicism can't explain. …
Saints In The Secular City: A History Of The Los Angeles Stake, Chad M. Orton
Saints In The Secular City: A History Of The Los Angeles Stake, Chad M. Orton
Theses and Dissertations
Beginning in 1847 and continuing to the turn of the century, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) were encouraged to gather to Utah, where they formed communities seperated from the evils of the world around them. While Mormonism continues to be closely associated with Utah, in 1989 it is a world-wide church with nearly seven million members, most residing outside of Utah, and many of these in major urban areas. Nevertheless, few studies have been made of how the Church has developed outside of Utah.
When the Los Angeles Stake was organized in 1923, it …
Competitive Fire: An Historical Descriptive Analysis Of Adherence To Traditional Journalistic Tenets In Television News Coverage Of The Mark Hofmann Salt Lake City Bombings, B. William Silcock
Competitive Fire: An Historical Descriptive Analysis Of Adherence To Traditional Journalistic Tenets In Television News Coverage Of The Mark Hofmann Salt Lake City Bombings, B. William Silcock
Theses and Dissertations
Television news contains factors of time constraints and deadlines that add pressures to the underlying rules of objectivity, fairness, and bias. This study seeks to determine if the elements of "responsible journalism" dissipate in television news coverage of a highly significant, developing news story. In other words, how well do the rules hold up under pressure? The momentous story selected for observation was the Mark Hofmann bombings in Salt Lake City, Utah. The focus centered on the coverage by local stations rather than the network television news operations.

Sedimentary Depositional Cyclicity, Mission Canyon And Charles Formations (Mississippian), Williston Basin, North Dakota, Jean L. Hoff
Theses and Dissertations
Workers within the Williston Basin have repeatedly reported the presence of sedimentary cyclicity within the carbonate and evaporite succession of the Mississippian Madison Group. Descriptions of cyclicity are diverse and commonly conflict. Previous work has been exclusively qualitative. This study used a group of statistical techniques in a method designed specifically for the objective identification and evaluation of cyclicity in the lithofacies sequence of the Mission Canyon and lower Charles Formations in North Dakota.
Twelve cores were sampled at every visually distinguishable lithologic unit. Forty-six lithologic components were counted in each sample on a presence-absence basis. The phi association coefficient …

Biochemical Characterization Of The Association Between Glycolytic Enzymes And Clathrin Coated Vesicles Using Centrifugation, Electrophoretic, And Ligand Blotting Techniques., Roxann Ranee Karkhoff-Schweizer
Theses and Dissertations
Clathrin coated vesicles (CCVs) are complex organelles reported to bind specific glycolytic enzymes. The purpose of this study was to further biochemically characterize the interactions of selected enzymes with CCV's by conventional and new techniques.Purified brain CCVs were observed to retain, in varying degrees, endogenous glycolytic enzymes, with glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and pyruvate kinase (PK) having the highest specific activities. Furthermore, Scatchard and Hill plot analyses of saturation binding data suggested that the binding of pure aldolase (ALD) and GAPDH involved heterogenous binding sites or cooperativity. Moreover, increasing concentrations of added ALD could not completely release bound GAPDH from …
