Changing Accessibility For Tourism In The Aurland Municipality Of Norway, Kari Brekke
Changing Accessibility For Tourism In The Aurland Municipality Of Norway, Kari Brekke
Theses and Dissertations
Because of changes in accessibility, the Aurland Municipality in Western Norway may be subjected to increased tourism. In 1991, an all-season highway will open between Oslo and Bergen, which will pass directly through the Aurland Municipality. The shift in importance from mostly seasonal rail/fjord traffic to an all-season automobile traffic has the potential for accelerating tourism pressures in this highly scenic area. The purpose of this study was to address possible problems and prospects of changing accessibility for tourism in the Aurland Municipality.
In order to examine tourism in the Aurland Municipality, a number of methods were used. Fieldwork was …

Adolescent Norms For The Eating Disorder Inventory As Related To Personal Variables In Female Adolescents At One Private Urban, One Rural, And One Semi-Rural High School, Betty J. Larson
Theses and Dissertations
The societal preference for a slender body image has caused an increasing number of adolescents to diet or use unusual methods of weight control. Some adolescents progress along the continuum of restrained eating toward the development of pathological eating disorders. In order to identify risk factors in the development of eating disorders, eating attitudes and behaviors of 454 normal adolescents were studied by using the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) and a personal background questionnaire. The higher the subscale scores on the EDI the more similar the individual's perceptions to those of victims with a pathological eating disorder.
With the exception …

Automatic Meshing Of Free-Form Deformation Solids, Ssuta S. Hsu
Automatic Meshing Of Free-Form Deformation Solids, Ssuta S. Hsu
Theses and Dissertations
Development of computer models and subsequent finite element analysis, are important aspects of modern engineering design. In this process, the geometry creation and finite element analysis software are well developed; however, the process of discretizing a geometry into a proper finite element model is time consuming and tedious. The work presented here uses the free-form deformation method to create smooth solid models, and invokes a solid subdivision and transition method to generate the hexahedron finite elements. The combination of these two techniques provides an automatic mesh generator that is easy to use, creates acceptable hexahedron elements for finite element analysis, …
The Position Of The Stockholder In Corporate Bankruptcy, Daniel S. Yinger
The Position Of The Stockholder In Corporate Bankruptcy, Daniel S. Yinger
Theses and Dissertations
The fate of a stockholder's investment in declining corporation depends on what the company does before and during bankruptcy. It is certainly possible that the firm may end up being liquidated with the stockholder loosing everything. On the other hand, the company can be bought by another firm, merge with a more successful entity, or even successfully reorganize alone to become a highly profitable firm. Just which of these events will come to pas~ is not always certain. It depends on the legal environment the company is faced with before and after the bankruptcy decision is made. In addition, market …
The Relationship Between Trait Anxiety And Organization In Memory., Doug Gene Heck
The Relationship Between Trait Anxiety And Organization In Memory., Doug Gene Heck
Theses and Dissertations
These two studies examined the influence of trait anxiety upon organization in memory. High and low trait-anxious subjects who were either high or low in verbal ability listened to tape-recorded word lists and prose passages at different levels of difficulty. Immediately after listening to each word list, the subjects were asked to orally recall all they could remember, while their written recall was used for the passages. The results revealed no trait anxiety effects, with the exception of high trait anxiety being associated with greater total recall of words. A weak positive correlation existed between trait anxiety and total recall in …
The Molecular Weight And Etheral Oxygen Analysis Of Coal Derived Asphaltenes And Preasphaltene Samples., Joseph Franklin Schwan
The Molecular Weight And Etheral Oxygen Analysis Of Coal Derived Asphaltenes And Preasphaltene Samples., Joseph Franklin Schwan
Theses and Dissertations
The use of an ether analysis procedure consisting of a reductive ether cleavage reaction of sodium in hexamethylphosphoric triamide (HMPA) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) with direct carbon-14 acetylation was investigated for the analysis of the ether content of coal derived asphaltenes and preasphaltenes. The acetate uptake of the cleavage products was higher than the original phenol content. However, major changes in the elemental composition of the cleavage product obscured the result of the acetate analysis. Tetrahydrofuran contamination was investigated by deuterium labeled THF experiments. No THF incorporation was indicated. The primary source of the change in elemental composition was therefore attributed …

The Synthesis Of Oligo- And Polynaphthyls And Their Reactions In Molten Salts., Jeffery Howard Banning
The Synthesis Of Oligo- And Polynaphthyls And Their Reactions In Molten Salts., Jeffery Howard Banning
Theses and Dissertations
There have been several recent attempts to synthesize a one-dimensional graphite-like polymer, namely poly(peri-naphthalene) (PPN). All of these approaches involved pyrolysis of a substituted perylene monomer to yield a polymer that exhibited characteristics not unlike those expected for PPN. The process of going from a monomer directly to an intractable polymer raises questions regarding processibility. A potential means to avoid the question is to synthesize a soluble/processible precursor polymer and subsequently convert this polymer to the desired PPN. This is the goal of the research reported herein. To successfully approach such a project, studies with appropriate model compounds were deemed necessary. …

The Development And Failure Of Historic Agricultural Communities Of Utah: A Case Study Of Johns Valley, Utah, Wayne R. Shelley
The Development And Failure Of Historic Agricultural Communities Of Utah: A Case Study Of Johns Valley, Utah, Wayne R. Shelley
Theses and Dissertations
Many agricultural communities have developed in Utah since the first settlement, but many no longer exist today. Some of these early communities experienced a "boom and bust," while others struggled for several years and were eventually abandoned. Johns Valley is a good example of these historic communities, as it experienced rapid growth and times of success and prosperity, yet it struggled and was eventually abandoned.
The situation in Johns Valley, from its early settlement to its demise, demonstrates the hope of the people who settled there and their efforts to make Johns Valley a productive and successful area. History also …

Brigham Young's Indian Superintendency (1851-58): A Significant Microcosm Of The American Indian Experience, Wayne Miles Eckman
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis provides a detailed study of Brigham Young's Indian superintendency within a framework of the federal Indian policy of his era. It focuses on Brigham Young's personal challenges and successes in instituting a conciliatory policy with the natives of the Great Basin. Experience taught Brigham Young that it was "cheaper to feed the Indians than to fight them." Brigham Young pursued his policy in spite of opposition from some Mormon constituents until finally his determination overruled pleas to forcibly remove the Indians from their lands.
Another important emphasis of the thesis is the personal interaction between Brigahm Young and …
The Pilgrimage Phenomenon: An Analysis Of The Motivations Of Visitors To Temple Square, Jill W. Knapp
The Pilgrimage Phenomenon: An Analysis Of The Motivations Of Visitors To Temple Square, Jill W. Knapp
Theses and Dissertations
Pilgrimage to sacred places of religious meaning has taken place since the early days of mankind. In the last few decades pilgrimage travel has experienced a world-wide boom due to modern means of transportation. Though pilgrimage is most commonly referred to in the context of the major world religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), there is some indication of pilgrimage-like travel among Mormons.
This thesis looks at Mormon pilgrimage behavior among Mormon visitors to Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. The study undertaken has revealed considerable differences between Mormon and non-Mormon motivations, behavior and visiting patterns visitors to …

Organ Doses In Routine Radiographic Procedures, Yang Han
Organ Doses In Routine Radiographic Procedures, Yang Han
Theses and Dissertations
There is general agreement that the extent of the risk from x-ray examination is related in some way to the radiation dose. As the dose increases, the likelihood of significant biological effects also increases. If a clear correlation between dose and effect is to be established, a convenient and reasonably accurate method of estimating patient’s absorbed doses during common radiographic examinations will be highly needed. A simple method is developed in this project to determine the two important parameters e exposure at skin entrance (ESE) and half value layer (IIVL), which is essential to get reasonably accurate estimates of absorbed …
