A Prospective Study Of Cancer Patients Developing Nausea And/Or Vomiting In Response To Chemotherapy., Marc W. Haut Jan 1990

A Prospective Study Of Cancer Patients Developing Nausea And/Or Vomiting In Response To Chemotherapy., Marc W. Haut

Theses and Dissertations

Two of the most common and distressing side effects of chemotherapy for cancer are nausea and vomiting. Nausea and/or vomiting that follows treatment is thought to be pharmacological in nature, while nausea and/or vomiting experienced in anticipation of treatment is hypothesized to be a conditioned response.Few studies have examined nonpharmacological, psychological factors in the development and experience of postchemotherapy nausea and/or vomiting. While much research has been conducted on psychological factors associated with the development and experience of anticipatory nausea and/or vomiting, the vast majority of these studies have been retrospective in nature. The purpose of the present study was …

Endocrinological Analysis Of Sandpiper Social Systems., Cheri Lynn Gratto Jan 1990

Endocrinological Analysis Of Sandpiper Social Systems., Cheri Lynn Gratto

Theses and Dissertations

I examined the endocrinological regulation of social behavior in two sympatric species of sandpipers exhibiting very different social systems. Semipalmated Sandpipers (Calidris pusilla) are monogamous and territorial, while Red-necked Phalaropes (Phalaropus lobatus) are facultatively polyandrous and non-territorial. Both parents incubate equally in the Semipalmated Sandpiper, while only male phalaropes care for eggs and young. By comparing circulating hormone levels (prolactin, testosterone, progesterone, and estradiol) between species and sexes throughout the breeding season, differences in hormonal profiles were related to behavior.Blood samples were collected in the summers of 1985 to 1987 from individuals of both species breeding in a 3 km$\sp2$ …

Spectroscopic Studies And Thermodynamics Of Charge -Transfer Complex Formation Between Metal Acetylacetonates As Donors, And Iodine, Phenol Or Pi-Systems As Acceptors., Kabuika Ngoy Butamina Jan 1990

Spectroscopic Studies And Thermodynamics Of Charge -Transfer Complex Formation Between Metal Acetylacetonates As Donors, And Iodine, Phenol Or Pi-Systems As Acceptors., Kabuika Ngoy Butamina

Theses and Dissertations

The donor properties of Metal acetylacetonates (M(acac)$\sb{\rm n}$) towards a variety of electron acceptors have been investigated. Thermodynamic parameters for the 1:1 Charge-Transfer (CT) complexes between M(acac)$\sb{\rm n}$ and I$\sb2$ have been determined from the blue-shifted I$\sb2$ peaks $(\sim$360 nm) in the UV-Vis. spectra. Positive $\rm\Delta S\sp{o}$ observed for the Zr(IV) and Sc(III) cases suggests that the Zr and Sc acac donors are more solvated in their free state than in the complexed form. The equilibrium constants K$\sb{\rm AD}$ for the M(acac)$\sb{\rm n}$/I$\sb2$ complexes are very different from the values previously reported by other workers. The I-I stretching modes are observed …

A Community Study Of Coalville, Utah, 1859-1914, Norma Eileen Pyper Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is about a small Mormon community, Coalville, Utah, during the time period 1859 to 1914. Coalville is located in the northeastern section of the state of Utah in Summit County on Interstate 80.
Although Coalville remained small in population, it is worthwhile to study its origins, the people who built its institutions, its social life and economy and how it developed from a mere camping spot on the road between Salt Lake to Wyoming into a stable community. Coalville's development was significant to the growth and culture of Utah.
The founders experienced the usual pioneer struggles to conquer …

The Analysis Of 3-Channel "Vector" Visual Evoked Potentials And Possible Neuroanatomical Correlates, Lance Mitchell Siegel Jan 1990

The Analysis Of 3-Channel "Vector" Visual Evoked Potentials And Possible Neuroanatomical Correlates, Lance Mitchell Siegel

Theses and Dissertations

he use of evoked potentials to evaluate the functional integrity of neuronal pathways has become a useful and accepted practice in clinical medicine. The use of visual evoked potentials for assisting in the diagnosis of such diseases as optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis is also well recognized. However, the visual evoked potential, unlike the auditory evoked potentials, lacks a well defined electrophysiological to neuroanatomical correlation; especially that of a significant non-cortical component. Currently, visual evoked potentials rely principally on the measurement of a cortical (occipital) positive peak of activity at 100ms (P100), recorded with a single channel electrode system, to …
