The Effects Of Metals On Growth And Nitrogenase Activity Of The Soil Cyanobacterium, Nostoc Commune Vaucher., Charles Lyle Pederson May 1990

The Effects Of Metals On Growth And Nitrogenase Activity Of The Soil Cyanobacterium, Nostoc Commune Vaucher., Charles Lyle Pederson

Theses and Dissertations

The overall purpose of this study was to provide basic data regarding the influence of metals on a free-living terrestrial cyanobacterium, and to demonstrate the utility of laboratory studies for assigning biological significance to field observations on soil-algal ecology.Because Nostoc commune Vaucher is a subaerial inhabitant of soils, it did not respond favorably to traditional liquid culture techniques. Therefore, a filter-culture technique was developed whereby N. commune was grown as a surface film on membrane filters superimposed on an inorganic nutrient agar. Filter-cultures were established by inoculating sterile cellulose acetate membrane filters with a layer of N. commune. Growth rates, …

Experimental Ultrastructural Analyses Of Glomerular Basement Membrane Heparan Sulfate Proteoglycans Under Proteinuric And Nonproteinuric Conditions., Jody Ann Rada May 1990

Experimental Ultrastructural Analyses Of Glomerular Basement Membrane Heparan Sulfate Proteoglycans Under Proteinuric And Nonproteinuric Conditions., Jody Ann Rada

Theses and Dissertations

Real glomerular basement membranes (GBMs) exhibit a charge-selective barrier, consisting of anionic sites, that restricts the passage of anionic molecules into the urine. These sites are located primarily in the laminae rarae interna (LRI) and externa (LRE) of the GBM and consist of heparan sulfate proteoglycan (HSPG). Previous efforts to localize the HSPG core protein within various layers of the GBM have been contradictory. Furthermore, attempts to correlate proteinuria in several disease states with a decrease in anionic sites or HSPG core protein have yielded conflicting results. In the present study when rat renal cortex blocks were treated by immersion …

Evaluation Of An Aerodynamic Particle Sizer With Certified Polydisperse Test Dusts, Stanley J. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

The Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) is a near real time laser particle sizer that counts and sizes particles in the range of 0.5 /xm to 3 0 /xm, which makes it ideal for measuring the particle size distribution of fly ash from coal combustion. While the APS has proven to be a valuable instrument for measuring particle size distribution from flue gas streams, data indicate that the APS may not be providing an accurate particle size distribution over the entire range of 0.5 /xm to 30 /xm.

The primary objective of this study was to determine the ability of the …

Coping With Conflict: A Study Of Interpersonal Conflict Resolution Styles Of Adult Children Of Alcoholics And Nonalcoholics, Renae A. Myszkowski

Theses and Dissertations

Research on adult children of alcoholics has indicated that such children have difficulty with behavioral and communicative characteristics. Specifically they have difficulty with such behaviors as lying, intimacy, responsibility, and trust. Research also has indicated that adult children of alcoholics rely on coping mechanisms to escape from their chaotic environments and such mechanisms are manifested in behaviors of co-dependency and family roles. Although the literature on adult children of alcoholics suggests that these individuals may have trouble with problem solving in conflict, no apparent literature discusses the strategies of conflict resolution for such individuals.

This study predicted that adult children …
