Graphical Tools For Situational Awareness Assistance For Large Battle Spaces, Brian B. Soltz Dec 1993

Graphical Tools For Situational Awareness Assistance For Large Battle Spaces, Brian B. Soltz

Theses and Dissertations

As virtual environments grow in complexity and size, users are increasingly challenged in assessing situations in large-scale virtual environment. This occurs because of the difficulty in determining where to focus attention and assimilating and assessing the information as it floods in. One technique for providing this type of assistance is to provide the user with a first-person, immersive, synthetic environment observation post, that permits unobtrusive observation of the environment without interfering with the activity in the environment. However, for large, complex synthetic environments, this type of support is not sufficient because the portrayal of raw, unanalyzed data in the virtual …

Object Interaction In A Parallel Object-Oriented Discrete-Event Simulation, Walter G. Trachsel Dec 1993

Object Interaction In A Parallel Object-Oriented Discrete-Event Simulation, Walter G. Trachsel

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates object interaction issues involved in developing an object-oriented parallel discrete-event simulation and develops a simulation model that provides object interaction capabilities. The research covers issues in object representation, object interaction, object management. discrete-event simulation, and parallel simulation. There are three primary types of objects that the research discusses. The first type is a basic simulation object, whose size and behavior is insignificant compared to the size of the simulation as a whole. The second type is an aggregate object which consists of smaller component objects that interact and affect the performance of the larger object as a …

Domain Modeling Of Time-Dependent Systems, Robert W. Waggoner Dec 1993

Domain Modeling Of Time-Dependent Systems, Robert W. Waggoner

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigated the feasibility of composing time-dependent specifications in Architect, a domain-oriented application composition and generation system being developed at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). Architect composes formally specified domain objects into an executable software specification that can be used to verify program correctness prior to generation of language specific code. As part of this research, domain modeling techniques were investigated and a candidate process was selected for evaluation. The process was used to develop domain models for two diverse time-dependent domains. Using object-oriented analysis, formal specifications were developed for a collection of event-driven logic circuit components …

A Method For Populating The Knowledge Base Of Afit's Domain-Oriented Application Composition System, Russell M. Warner

Theses and Dissertations

This research developed a formal method for adding new domains to Architect, a domain-oriented application composition system being developed at the Air Force Institute of Technology AFIT to explore new software engineering technologies. Using canonical formal specifications of domain objects, Architect rapidly composes these specifications into a software application and executes a prototype of that application as a means to demonstrate its correctness before any programming language specific code is generated. Architect is implemented in the Software Refinery environment, which allows Architect to create and manipulate object-oriented specifications. As a part of this research effort, domain-oriented application composition systems were …

Domain Analysis And Modeling Of A Model-Based Software Executive, Robert L. Welgan Dec 1993

Domain Analysis And Modeling Of A Model-Based Software Executive, Robert L. Welgan

Theses and Dissertations

This research was adapted the domain analysis techniques of Prieto- Diaz and Tracz to specify a domain analysis process which was used to conduct domain analysis over the domain of software executives. This analysis created a set of informal and formal domain model artifacts. The domain model artifacts were instantiated into two application executive subsystems. These executive subsystems operated in Architect, a domain-oriented application composition system based on the Object-Connection-Update OCU model. This research demonstrated and evaluated execution of the instantiated executive domain model in a series of event-driven and time-driven applications. As a consequence of developing the application executive …

Evaluation Of Moderate Angle Of Attack Roll Of A Dual Engine, Thrust Vectoring Aircraft Using Quantitative Feedback Theory, Kevin E. Boyum

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops an innovative approach to the design of a flight control system for performing the large-amplitude velocity vector roll maneuver at high angles of attack AOAs. A six degree of freedom aircraft model is developed from the fundamental nine-state equations of motion using a modified linearization technique. The MIMO multiple-input multiple-output Quantitative Feedback Theory QFT robust control design technique is then used to jointly address the system nonlinearities present in this maneuver and the changes in the system parameters due to changes in flight condition, treating them as structured uncertainty in the design of a three-axis rate-commanded control …

A Study Of Two Dimensional Tapered Periodic Edge Treatments To Reduce Wideband Edge Diffraction, Russell A. Burleson

Theses and Dissertations

This is a brief summary of a study to reduce diffraction from an infinite two dimensional edge using tapered periodic surfaces. The concept is to use the impedance characteristics of a periodic surface to create a tapered impedance much like a tapered resistance commonly used for diffraction reduction. This approach has several advantages over. tapered resistive treatments to include ease of fabrication, better engineering control of the impedance and negligible loss absorbed by the ta per. In this study, four periodic tapers were design, built and tested. These tapers were also modeled using a variety of numerical techniques. The results …

Three Dimensional Object Recognition Using A Complex Autoregressive Model, David E. Chelen Dec 1993

Three Dimensional Object Recognition Using A Complex Autoregressive Model, David E. Chelen

Theses and Dissertations

Based on an autoregressive model, Complex Partial Correlation CPARCOR features are known to provide exceptional Position, Scale, and Rotation Invariant PSRI properties for planar 2-Dimensional 2-D object recognition. Although autogressive models have been successfully applied to numerous spatio-temporal recognition tasks, the effects of out-of-plane image rotations were never considered. This study investigates application of the CPAR-COR model to a five class problem of nonplanar 2-D views of 3-D objects. Recognition based on CPAR-COR features is evaluated using a Template Matching algorithm, two K-Nearest-Neighbor KNN classifiers, and a Hidden Markov Model HMM. Direct comparisons to recognition based on Fourier features are …

Satellite Attitude Determination Using Linear Combination Of Models, Martin S. Chin Dec 1993

Satellite Attitude Determination Using Linear Combination Of Models, Martin S. Chin

Theses and Dissertations

In satellite analysis, it is often necessary to determine the attitude of a satellite from a two dimensional image of the satellite. This thesis describes work performed to determine the attitude of a satellite relative to a reference position. The attitude is described in terms of the scaling, rotation and translation of the reference that will result in a pose that can be projected to form the image of interest. The techniques used are based on finding coefficients for the linear combination of basis images and decomposition of a composite transformation matrix. The methods were initially modeled in Mathematica and …

Analyzing Adaptive Beamformer Performance In A Stable Multipath Environment, Mark Godino Dec 1993

Analyzing Adaptive Beamformer Performance In A Stable Multipath Environment, Mark Godino

Theses and Dissertations

Fighter aircraft equipped with X-Band radars having an adaptive beamforming capability exhibit degraded performance due to radome multipath reflection (RMR). The reflections from the radome into the antenna array degrade the pattern and cause the formation of large sidelobes. This phenomenon makes detection of LO targets difficult when jamming enters the high RMR sidelobes. Actual radomes are curved and cause reflected wavefronts to be nonplanar. Analyzing beamformer performance under these conditions is difficult, since the beamformer response is defined as the amplitude and phase change experienced by a complex plane wave as a function of frequency and location. To work …

Discovery Learning In Autonomous Agents Using Genetic Algorithms, Edward O. Gordon Dec 1993

Discovery Learning In Autonomous Agents Using Genetic Algorithms, Edward O. Gordon

Theses and Dissertations

As the new Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) draft standard evolves into a useful document and distributed simulations begin to emerge that implement parts of the standard, there is renewed interest in available methods to effectively control autonomous aircraft agents in such a simulated environment. This investigation examines the use of a genetics-based classifier system for agent control. These are robust learning systems that use the adaptive search mechanisms of genetic algorithms to guide the learning system in forming new concepts (decision rules) about its environment. By allowing the rule base to evolve, it adapts agent behavior to environmental changes. Addressed …

Investigation Into Model-Based Fuzzy Logic Control, Michael W. Logan Dec 1993

Investigation Into Model-Based Fuzzy Logic Control, Michael W. Logan

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the feasibility of a proposed hybrid linear/Fuzzy controller for nonlinear plants. The proposed controller concept is based on the use of multiple linearizations of a nonlinear plant, which describe the dynamics of perturbations about equilibrium points throughout the desired envelope of operation. A bank of linear compensators is developed, each corresponding to a linearized plant about a different equilibrium. The multiple control signals generated by the bank of compensators are then weighted and summed using Fuzzy Logic to produce a composite control perturbation signal, which is used to drive the nonlinear plant. Experiments were conducted to test …

Evaluation Of An Acoustic Charge Transport (Act) Device For Adaptive Interference Suppression In Spread Spectrum Communications Systems, Michael S. Mills

Theses and Dissertations

Analytical results have shown that adaptive filtering can be a powerful tool for the rejection of narrowband interference in a direct sequence spread spectrum receiver. However, the complexity of adaptive filtering hardware has hindered the experimental validation of these results. This thesis describes a unique adaptive filter architecture for implementing the Widrow-Hoff Least- Mean-Square (LMS) algorithm using two state-of-the-art Acoustic Charge Transport (ACT) Programmable Transversal Filters (PTFs). Signal-to-noise ratio improvement measurements demonstrate the effectiveness of the adaptive filter for suppressing single- and dual-tone jammers at jammer-to-signal ratios (JSRs) of up to 30 dB. It is shown that the ACT adaptive …

Design Of A Subsonic Envelope Flight Control System For The Vista F-16 Using Quantitative Feedback Theory, Odell R. Reynolds Dec 1993

Design Of A Subsonic Envelope Flight Control System For The Vista F-16 Using Quantitative Feedback Theory, Odell R. Reynolds

Theses and Dissertations

A controlled plant's characteristics can vary widely throughout its operational envelope. This is a major problem in nominal plant-based control system design. Hence, gain scheduling is often used for full envelop design. In this paper, it is proposed to address the plant's variability using robust control design concepts. In particular, the frequency domain based Quantitative Feedback Theory Multiple-Input Multiple-Output robust control design method is employed for the synthesis of a full envelop flight control system for an F-16 derivative. Compensators for the aircraft's pitch and lateral directional channels are designed, and the designs are validated using linear simulations.

The emulator neural network is designed to reproduce the flight dynamics of the experimental plant. The controller is then designed to produce the appropriate control inputs to drive the emulator …

An Analysis Of Fm Jamming And Noise Quality Measures, Timothy N. Taylor Dec 1993

An Analysis Of Fm Jamming And Noise Quality Measures, Timothy N. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides a description of FM-by-noise jamming, both at RF and at the output of the radar receiver, in terms of spectra, time-domain waveforms, and univariate probability density of amplitude. Particular emphasis is given to the case where the peak frequency deviation of the FM modulator is sufficiently small that Woodward's Theorem does not provide a good approximation of the RF spectrum. Additionally, noise quality measures which have been used to measure noise quality of radar jammers are considered theoretically and experimentally, and it is concluded that a noise measure which incorporates both a spectral measure and a probability …
