Compressible Turbulence Measurement In Low-Angle Injection Into A Supersonic Flow, Gregory J. Mccann Mar 1995

Compressible Turbulence Measurement In Low-Angle Injection Into A Supersonic Flow, Gregory J. Mccann

Theses and Dissertations

Mean flow and compressible turbulence measurements have been obtained at two stations downstream of low-angle supersonic injection into a Mach 3.0 flow (Re/m = 15 x 106). Data were collected using conventional Pitot and cone-static probes, single and multiple overheat cross-wire anemometry, and flow visualization techniques (shadowgraphs and schlierens). A direct measure of total Reynolds shear stress was accomplished using a turbulence transformation of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Results show compressibility effects, indicated by density fluctuations, to be large relative to the velocity fluctuations and on the same order in all three components. Compressibility appears to account for …

The Effectiveness Of Link-Teaching In Undergraduate Science Education., Dennis Allen Jacobs Feb 1995

The Effectiveness Of Link-Teaching In Undergraduate Science Education., Dennis Allen Jacobs

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate a method for improving undergraduate science education. The method investigated is called link-teaching. It is the linking of a core science class with a writing class, with the topics covered in the science class being the same topics used for the writing assignments in the writing class. For the purpose of this study a physics class (Natural Phenomena) and an astronomy class were both linked with expository writing classes. The research was done in the context of two theories of learning, Ausubel's Assimilation Theory and Gowin's Theory of Education. Both predicted that link-teaching, …

A Response-Centered Approach In The Secondary Language Arts Classroom: The Teachers' Perspective., Barbara Smith Livdahl Feb 1995

A Response-Centered Approach In The Secondary Language Arts Classroom: The Teachers' Perspective., Barbara Smith Livdahl

Theses and Dissertations

This paper considers the perceptions of six teacher-researchers as they constructed the response-centered approach to teaching language arts. The response-centered approach rests on the assumptions that (1) knowledge systems develop naturally and simultaneously with children's language development, (2) language is integral to the learning process, (3) learning occurs in the social setting.Three secondary English teachers, two student teachers, and a professor of education were collaborators in this study. They constructed the response-centered approach after having read and discussed research literature relevant to language and learning. They continue to define and redefine the response-centered approach as they teach. The data gathered …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of faculty during the process of expanding an associate degree granting technical college to a baccalaureate degree granting polytechnic university. Two research questions were addressed: (1) What perceptions did faculty have about the vertical extension? (2) Did the faculty go through a transition process in adapting to the vertical extension? If yes, what transition process did the follow? The site for this qualitative study was the campus of the University of Minnesota, Crookston. Twenty-eight of 30 full-time tenured teaching faculty participated in this study. Qualitative research methods included open-ended interviews …

How The New Jersey State Aquarium Was Promoted, Beth J. Rose

Theses and Dissertations

This study determines how public relations was used to promote the New Jersey State Aquarium to persuade a skeptical public to overcome their hesitancy to come to Camden to visit the facility.

During its first year of operation, the New Jersey State Aquarium attracted more than one (1) million visitors, surpassing its projected goal.

The public relations plan was analyzed in nine different categories. The strategies included marketing, public relations, creativity, media, promotional membership, pricing, facility rental and group sales. The public relations campaign strategies included magazines, billboards, radio, television and a pre-opening press preview. The target market for each …

The Development And Validation Of The Missionary Language Performance Test, Blair E. Bateman

Theses and Dissertations

Performance tests are an effective way of assessing examinees' ability to perform specific job-related tasks. This thesis details the development and validation of a performance test designed to measure LDS missionaries' ability to perform missionary tasks in a foreign language, the Missionary Language Performance Test (MLPT).

The development of the test involved identifying a set of relevant missionary tasks, specifying the criteria to be evaluated, designing test items, devising a procedure for sampling tasks and for administering and rating the test, and training raters to administer the test. Three separate studies were conducted to validate the test: (a) both the …

Organizational Slack, Efficiency, And Quality Of Care In Acute Care Hospitals, Kyung Ii Youn Jan 1995

Organizational Slack, Efficiency, And Quality Of Care In Acute Care Hospitals, Kyung Ii Youn

Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between technical efficiency and quality of care in hospitals is studied in the context of resource availability in hospital organizations. The resource availability of hospitals is conceptualized by organizational slack.

An integrated model is developed encompassing the source of organizational slack, its impact on technical efficiency and on quality of care, and its impact on the relationship between efficiency and quality. Organizational threat as an environmental factor affecting the level of slack is measured by the level of competition and regulation. Organizational slack is measured using financial and operational indicators of the hospitals. Technical efficiency is estimated by …

Attorney And Judicial Perceptions Of The Credibility Of Expert Witnesses In Child Custody Cases, Michael T. Foot

Theses and Dissertations

Attorney and judicial attitudes towards expert witnesses in child custody cases were investigated by a cross-sectional research design. Subjects consisted of a sample of 381 of all attorneys and judges in the Commonwealth of Virginia who wished to be certified as guardians ad litem. Subjects were asked to fill out a six page questionnaire immediately prior to a daylong certification training session. The sample was primarily white (85.2%) and male (57.7%). Information was gathered on the subjects' demographic characteristics, experience with and attitudes toward expert witnesses in custody cases, opinions on traditional court and family structures, and knowledge of developmental …

A Generalized System Performance Model For Object-Oriented Database Applications, Ellen Moore Walk Jan 1995

A Generalized System Performance Model For Object-Oriented Database Applications, Ellen Moore Walk

Theses and Dissertations

Although relational database systems have met many needs in traditional business applications, such technology is inadequate for non-traditional applications such as computer-aided design, computer-aided software engineering, and knowledge bases. Object-oriented database systems (OODB) enhance the data modeling power and performance of database management systems for these applications.

Response time is an important issue facing OODB. However, standard measures of on-line transaction processing are irrelevant for OODB . Benchmarks compare alternative implementations of OODB system software, running a constant application workload. Few attempts have been made to characterize performance implications of OODB application design, given a fixed OODB and operating system …

Factors Affecting The Academic Success Of Students Transitioning From Middle School To High School, Garry Lee Newton Jan 1995

Factors Affecting The Academic Success Of Students Transitioning From Middle School To High School, Garry Lee Newton

Theses and Dissertations

Expectations for students in middle school and students in high school differ. Administrators and teachers have a responsibility to insure that these students are prepared academically to succeed when leaving the eighth grade and entering the ninth grade. Currently this is not the case in many middle schools and junior high schools. In Pocomoke, Maryland the high school principal, Dr. James H. Vansciver, (Marshall, Scott & Sikes, 1993, p. Preface), claimed that just as isolationism was not successful in preventing the United States from becoming involved in a global conflict, neither is it a successful strategy for individual schools to …
