Mental Health Values Of Native American College Students On Three Different Reservations, Raymond List Aug 1996

Mental Health Values Of Native American College Students On Three Different Reservations, Raymond List

Theses and Dissertations

This study was undertaken to add to knowledge about Native American perspective on mental health issues. The present investigation explored two questions. The first used the Mental Health Values Questionnaire to explore how Native American mental health values are connected to daily lifestyle patterns. The MHVQ_is a 99-item instrument which yields scores for eight dimensions for conceptualizing healthy emotional adjustment (Tyler, Clark, Olson, Klapp, & Cheloha, 1983). The second question had to do with who Native Americans perceive to be appropriate sources of help for different types of perceived problems. This question was explored with the Sources of Referral Questionnaire …

The Development And Evaluation Of The Knife Finite Element, Brett W. Clark Aug 1996

The Development And Evaluation Of The Knife Finite Element, Brett W. Clark

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the development and evaluation of the knife finite element which is a degenerate case of a hexahedral element. The knife connectivity is an artifact of automatic all-hexahedral mesh generators. Currently, knives are propagated to the surface of the mesh for removal. However since this disturbs the surface mesh, other alternatives are needed. This thesis investigates the option of leaving the knife connectivity in the mesh and treating it as a valid finite element. The shape functions and stiffness matrix for the knife element are derived and evaluated using theoretical and practical evaluations. It is concluded that the …

Finally, performance of the "probably" depressed students was compared with performance of the nondepressed students. In the first part of the study 1,617 undergraduates were surveyed and 136 …

Employee And Employer Perceptions Of The Workplace-Personal Life Interface In The Midwest, Debra Dose Gebeke Aug 1996

Employee And Employer Perceptions Of The Workplace-Personal Life Interface In The Midwest, Debra Dose Gebeke

Theses and Dissertations

Most research regarding the workplace and personal life balance has been conducted from the employer (macro level approach) or employee (micro level approach) perspective in a large business context. More recently a call for research using a contextual effects model which examines the interface between the workplace and personal life has been issued. There is also limited research in smaller businesses (fewer than 500 employees), such as those more prevalent in the Midwest. This gap in the research is addressed in the present study.

A sample of 17 businesses from North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska reflecting the smaller …

Incidence Of Cesarean Delivery In Nulliparous Patients Based Upon Timing Of Epidural Analgesia Initiation, Wendy H. Sandelin Aug 1996

Incidence Of Cesarean Delivery In Nulliparous Patients Based Upon Timing Of Epidural Analgesia Initiation, Wendy H. Sandelin

Theses and Dissertations

Epidural analgesia for the parturient is a safe and effective method of pain relief during labor. This method of pain management permits the pregnant woman to have a virtually pain-free labor while remaining alert and able to participate in the delivery. However, the effect of epidural analgesia on nulliparous labor, and ultimately on the mode of delivery, vaginal or cesarean, remains controversial. Cesarean delivery is associated with greater maternal morbidity and mortality, as well as increased financial cost for the health care system. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of and circumstances related to cesarean …

Modeling Coupled Transient Transport Of Mass, Momentum And Energy In Wellbore/Reservoir Systems, Xiaowei Wang Aug 1996

Modeling Coupled Transient Transport Of Mass, Momentum And Energy In Wellbore/Reservoir Systems, Xiaowei Wang

Theses and Dissertations

The total reserve of a hydrocarbon bearing formation and its ability to economically produce the fluids determine a reservoir’s development potential. Oil companies in the United States and abroad spend millions of dollars a year in well testing to estimate parameters related to these factors. A large fraction of these tests are surface “buildup” tests in which a producing well in the reservoir is “shut-in” either at the wellhead or at the bottom, or “drawdown” tests in which a well initially closed, is suddenly opened at the wellhead. The transient response of the pressure to these changes at the well …

A Comparison Study Of Memory Performance Among Middle-Aged Women: Self-Reported Pre-Menopausal, Peri-Menopausal, And Post-Menopausal Women On Hormone Replacement Therapy, Naiwon Chung Sjulson

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research suggests that menopausal women often complain of increased physical symptoms, depression, and memory difficulties. Reports of subsequent improvement in memory following estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) among the clinical population abound, suggesting a possible link between estrogen and memory performance.

The purpose of this study was to a) replicate and extend previous findings showing a possible link between memory performance and menopause status, b) compare the levels of personal adjustment in terms of physical and emotional symptoms among women at three different phases of natural menopause, c) examine the effects of individual differences that may have some impact on …

Native American Indian Perspective Of Euroamerican Therapists' Behaviors, Jayne M. Lokken Aug 1996

Native American Indian Perspective Of Euroamerican Therapists' Behaviors, Jayne M. Lokken

Theses and Dissertations

The American Psychological Association has identified three areas of skills for cross-cultural competency for psychologists. Those areas are knowledge of self and one's own culture, historical and current knowledge of other cultures and specific technical skills. This study addresses the area of technical skills in a cross-cultural situation, Euroamerican therapists working with Native American Indian clients. Many authors have theorized that individual counseling is not a useful modality to Native American Indians. The method used in this study was a role-play counseling situation between Native American Indians and Euroamerican counseling and clinical psychology doctoral students followed by a post-session interview. …

Controlling For Vocabulary Ability In Healthy Young And Healthy Old Adults In World Recognition Tasks, Laura J. Kitzan Aug 1996

Controlling For Vocabulary Ability In Healthy Young And Healthy Old Adults In World Recognition Tasks, Laura J. Kitzan

Theses and Dissertations

Word recognition studies have often focused on examining differences between young and old adults, albeit with mixed results and conclusions. Some studies have found declines or changes with age while others fail to find differences in the magnitude of robust effects including word frequency and number of meanings. One possible explanation for these incongruencies is that older adults often have higher vocabulary levels than do the young adult groups and this confounding could be masking real differences in word recognition with age. Word recognition studies have shown the Number of Meanings (NOM) Effect and Word Frequency Effect to be fairly …

Effect Of Catalase Overexpression On Adriamycin Cardiotoxicity In Transgenic Mice, Yan Chen Aug 1996

Effect Of Catalase Overexpression On Adriamycin Cardiotoxicity In Transgenic Mice, Yan Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Adriamycin is an important anticancer agent. However, the clinical use of Adriamycin is limited by its undesirable side effects, especially cardiotoxicity. One of the most likely mechanisms of Adriamycin toxicity is the production of reactive oxygen free radicals. Catalase is a major enzyme involved in detoxification of hydrogen peroxide (H202) in mammalian cells. It has been shown that catalase activity per g tissue of the heart is very low in comparison to other tissues, being only about 2% that of liver in the mouse. This less proficient ability to dispose of reactive oxygen species may be responsible for the high …

Parameter Estimation For Superimposed Weighted Exponentials, Edwards A. Ingham Jul 1996

Parameter Estimation For Superimposed Weighted Exponentials, Edwards A. Ingham

Theses and Dissertations

The approach of modeling measured signals as superimposed exponentials in white Gaussian noise is popular and effective. However, estimating the parameters of the assumed model is challenging, especially when the data record length is short, the signal strength is low, or the parameters are closely spaced. In this dissertation, we first review the most effective parameter estimation scheme for the superimposed exponential model: maximum likelihood. We then provide a historical review of the linear prediction approach to parameter estimation for the same model. After identifying the improvements made to linear prediction and demonstrating their weaknesses, we introduce a completely tractable …

Reaction Based Grasp Force Assignment, Mark W. Hunter Jul 1996

Reaction Based Grasp Force Assignment, Mark W. Hunter

Theses and Dissertations

An iterative method is developed by which the contact forces required to apply an arbitrary wrench (six elements of force and moment) to a stably grasped object may be calculated quickly. The assignment of contact forces, given a required object wrench, is accomplished with the use of fuzzy logic. This concept is referred to as the fuzzy logic reactive system (FLRS). The solution is versatile with respect to goals inherent in the rulebase and the input parameters, and is also applicable for an arbitrary number of contacts. The goal presented in this research, to illustrate the concept of the FLRS, …

Approaches Towards Diindeno(1,2,3,4-Defg;1',2',3',4'-Mnop)Chrysene: A Curved Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon., Tracy A. Torno

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this work was to synthesize the curved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon diindeno (1,2,3,4-defg;$1\sp\prime,2\sp\prime,$3$ \sp\prime,4\sp\prime$-mnop) chrysene (56). Three approaches were proposed to prepare chrysene 56 beginning with appropriately substituted fluorene compounds: the Zipper Approach, the Inside-Out Approach, and the Outside-In Approach. These approaches are based on the order in which the positions of the fluorene compounds are coupled. Therefore, much of this work was devoted to determining which type of coupling reaction would allow both aryl-aryl attachment and bending of the aryl rings to form chrysene 56.Unsuccessful attempts were made at preparing 1-substituted-9-fluorenones using ($\eta\sp6$-arene)Cr(CO)$\sb3$ complexes. It has been …

The Metabolic Role Of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase In Rabbit Enterocytes., Sherry A. Wuensch Jul 1996

The Metabolic Role Of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase In Rabbit Enterocytes., Sherry A. Wuensch

Theses and Dissertations

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) is a key gluconeogenic enzyme. In gluconeogenic tissues, cytosolic PEPCK is essential for glucose formation whereas no metabolic role is defined for mitochondrial PEPCK. Large amounts of PEPCK activity are present in the mucosa of small intestine from rabbits although this tissue is not known to be a significant site for gluconeogenesis in adult animals. Thus the intent of the project was to investigate the intracellular distribution and role of PEPCK in rabbit enterocytes from the small intestine.Initially, a procedure was developed to isolate viable enterocytes from the small intestine of rabbits for use in enzyme and …
