Mcmi - Iii Profiles Of Combat Veterans: Predictors Of Educational And Vocational Impairment, Catherine Jenks

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the ability of four selected scales on the MCMI-111, Passive Aggressive, Avoidant, Antisocial and PTSD to determine the amount of variance contributed by each of the scales as predictors of educational and vocational impairment in Vietnam Veterans. Subjects consisted of 40 Vietnam veterans diagnosed with PTSD who received treatment at an outpatient Readjustment Program in Brevard County, Florida. Multiple Regression analyses identified the Passive-Aggressive personality scale on the MCMI-111 as significantly contributing to the variance as a predictor in vocational impairment, however, in an unexpected direction. Results and implications of these findings are discussed.

Understanding Choice As A Dimension Of Literature Based Reading Instruction, Barbara Wonder Olson Jul 1998

Understanding Choice As A Dimension Of Literature Based Reading Instruction, Barbara Wonder Olson

Theses and Dissertations

Literacy instruction is supported by educational theories of teaching and learning that put students at the center of the curriculum. In learner-centered classrooms students are actively involved in authentic reading and writing that allows them the autonomy to read and write for their own purposes. In these settings teachers share the responsibility for learning with students and create learning environments that support student ownership.

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate what happened in an elementary classroom when students were given literacy choices. This qualitative study provided an in-depth picture of literacy in a fourth grade classroom. It …

Temporal Lobe Transients And Prayer, Donald E. Newberry Jul 1998

Temporal Lobe Transients And Prayer, Donald E. Newberry

Theses and Dissertations

Persinger (1983) theorized that religious experiences involve the production of brief, micro-seizures that originate in the limbic system and affect the temporal lobes of the brain. According to this theory, ritual behavior could be used by individuals to induce micro-seizure activity. The theory predicted that an increase in alpha and theta activity in the temporal lobes of the brain would occur when subjects had a religious experience.

To test this, male and female Christian college students completed a Prayer Experiences Questionnaire inquiring about their religious experiences during prayer. Individuals scoring in the upper and lower 30 percent of the possible …

Church And State Relations In Seventh Century England: The Making Of A Christian State., Steven William King Jul 1998

Church And State Relations In Seventh Century England: The Making Of A Christian State., Steven William King

Theses and Dissertations

When Pope Gregory the Great sent St. Augustine to England in 596, Christianity was formally reintroduced into England after nearly two hundred years of isolation due to the Anglo-Saxon invasions. The success or failure of the mission hinged on the ability of those sent to establish a relationship with the provincial rulers. As Christianity took hold throughout the seventh century, the inchoate relationship between the rulers and Church matured within the nucleus of two different world views. The relatively rapid and peaceful success of the Church in England raises several questions: why was AEthelberht, bretwalda of Kent, so willing to …

Buber's I-Thou/I-It Construct And Gilligan's Connected/Separate Self Construct: A Theoretical Creative Inquiry, Nancie R. Ziemke

Theses and Dissertations

William Heard's application of Martin Buber's dialogical theory to the practice and theory of therapy bears a striking similarity to the relational theories developed by Carol Gilligan and the writers associated with the Stone Center. Yet these two theoretical constructs have never been critically and formally compared. This study proposes to help fill that gap by critically comparing and contrasting the dialogical and relational constructs.

Seven questions will be addressed. (a) What is Buber's I-Thou/I-It construct?; (b) What is Gilligan's Connected Self construct and the Stone Center's relational construct?; (c) How do Buber and Gilligan/Stone Center's relational constructs compare?; (d) …

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a districtwide criterion-referenced testing program that has been administered annually since 1989 in a school district in Manitoba. The study specifically addressed whether the testing program had impacted on students’ academic achievement and on the attitudes and instructional behaviors of the educators involved …

The Effects Of Alcohol And Anxiety: Senesitivity On Social Stress In Women, Beth A. Lewis Jul 1998

The Effects Of Alcohol And Anxiety: Senesitivity On Social Stress In Women, Beth A. Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

The tension reduction hypothesis postulates that consuming alcohol leads to a stress dampening effect. This stress reduction is negatively reinforcing, therefore, individuals learn that consuming alcohol will reduce unpleasant, tension type sensations and cognitions. Several studies have examined the validity of the tension reduction hypothesis as an explanatory model for the development o f alcohol problems, but no clear consensus has been found. As a result, researchers have begun to examine individual difference variables that may interact with the effects of alcohol on anxiety. The present study examined potential individual difference factors (social anxiety and anxiety sensitivity) by randomly assigning …

Motivational Functions Of Volunteerism: Similarities And Differences Between Low & High Risk Communities, Deborah L. Cole Jun 1998

Motivational Functions Of Volunteerism: Similarities And Differences Between Low & High Risk Communities, Deborah L. Cole

Theses and Dissertations

A functional approach provides a framework for identifying psychological and behavioral aspects associated with decision-making, experiences, and consequences. The functional approach to volunteerism suggests that different people, or sub-populations, may actually be motivated to serve based upon individual and varying personal, social, and psychological functions. The purpose of the study was to investigate any motivational differences or similarities between adults living in high at-risk and low at-risk communities with regard to volunteerism.

High and low at-risk communities were identified by the seven community at-risk indicators suggested by the Carnegie Council on Adolescents. Those communities with three or less indicators were …

Representations, Approximations, And Algorithms For Mathematical Speech Processing, Laura R. Suzuki Jun 1998

Representations, Approximations, And Algorithms For Mathematical Speech Processing, Laura R. Suzuki

Theses and Dissertations

Representing speech signals such that specific characteristics of speech are included is essential in many Air Force and DoD signal processing applications. A mathematical construct called a frame is presented which captures the important time-varying characteristic of speech. Roughly speaking, frames generalize the idea of an orthogonal basis in a Hilbert space, Specific spaces applicable to speech are L2(R) and the Hardy spaces Hp(D) for p> 1 where D is the unit disk in the complex plane. Results are given for representations in the Hardy spaces involving Carleson's inequalities (and its extensions), …

Transcriptional Regulation Of A Novel Heat Shock Response And Its Association With Apoptosis In Nb2-Lymphoma Cells., Mingyu Zhang Jun 1998

Transcriptional Regulation Of A Novel Heat Shock Response And Its Association With Apoptosis In Nb2-Lymphoma Cells., Mingyu Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Virtually all cells respond to heat stress by increased expression or induction of the highly conserved heat shock proteins (HSPs). However rat Nb2-11 cells, a prolactin-dependent preT-cell line displayed an unusual heat shock response following exposure to heat stress (41$\sp\circ$C, 1 hr). There was no evidence of inducible HSP70 expression. Moreover, expression of the constitutive HSP70s and HSP90s decreased during the heat stress apparently reflecting a decrease in mRNA stability. Gel shift assays revealed that heat shock factor (HSF) was activated although its DNA binding rapidly deteriorated. Immunoblotting, using an antibody specific to HSF1, indicated that proteolysis of HSF1 may …

Forces, moments, and pressure distributions were measured in the AFIT 1.5-m (5-ft) wind tunnel at Reynolds numbers between 3x105 and 9x105 based on the turret diameter. Oil traces indicated the nature of the flow near the surface of the unmodified turret and the surrounding area. Tufts placed on the turret, fairings, and splitter plates showed changes in separation regions when configurations were changed. The flow around the turret was characterized by dominant vortices shedding from the top …

Trigonometric Transforms For Image Reconstruction, Thomas M. Foltz Jun 1998

Trigonometric Transforms For Image Reconstruction, Thomas M. Foltz

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation demonstrates how the symmetric convolution-multiplication property of discrete trigonometric transforms can be applied to traditional problems in image reconstruction with slightly better performance than Fourier techniques and increased savings in computational complexity for symmetric point spread functions. The fact that the discrete Fourier transform a circulant matrix provides an alternate way to derive the symmetric convolution-multiplication property for discrete trigonometric transforms. Derived in this manner, the symmetric convolution-multiplication property extends easily to multiple dimensions and generalizes to multidimensional asymmetric sequences. The symmetric convolution-multiplication property allows for linear filtering of degraded images via point-by-point multiplication in the transform domain …

High Amplitude Tracking Control, Joseph W. Mcnamee Jun 1998

High Amplitude Tracking Control, Joseph W. Mcnamee

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of tracking control in the face of high amplitude dynamic reference signals, hard state and control constraints, and open-loop unstable plants is investigated. Saturation effects mitigation is a current research topic, and a large body of literature exists which addresses this problem. However, with a few notable exceptions, little work has been accomplished which is applicable to the problem of high amplitude dynamic reference signal tracking in the face of hard state and control constraints, and open-loop unstable plants. Moreover, methods that do address the stated problem generally limit the exogenous reference signal to statically admissible values to …
