The purpose of this study was to understand the impact of working with aging inmates on parole officers. Overall, previous research has shown those who work with parolees experience secondary trauma and burnout due to long contact hours, and lack of job training and resources. Research, however, has been limited on parole officers who work with the elderly offender population. Arguably, older inmates face unique obstacles that are in addition to the general offender population such as chronic health conditions, physical disabilities, and lack of family support. Lost in the Times of Yesterday is an ongoing collection of fiction that features short stories who, while varying differently from one another, are all intertwined by the themes of immigration, post-colonialism, and Arabic and Arab-American identity, aiming to capture the diverse orchestra of Egyptian and Egyptian-American voices through the lens of magical realism. Some examples: the grief of a village girl and her attempt to understand her father’s ghost; an Egyptian-American actor whose slow physical disappearance leads to an examination of identity within contemporary performance; and the life of boy born with chestnut wings in a Brooklyn apartment.

The purpose of this study is to quantitatively examine the ways in which social integration impacts student persistence in the commuter student population on the Glassboro campus at Rowan University. Additionally, this study examines the levels of social engagement in the commuter student population and in what ways is their engagement impacted. The sample consisted of 159 participants who commute to Rowan University’s main campus who are enrolled as undergraduate students. This study explores concepts of community and belonging among students who are involved in clubs and organizations at Rowan University. Through the use of a qualitative survey and the option for an additional interview, participants are able to discuss their personal experiences being involved in a club or organization and if they believe it contributes to their sense of community and belonging, not only in the club or organization, but at Rowan University as an institution. Depression is a major public health concern among students in higher education. Prior work suggests that depressive symptoms increase during the transition to college. Transfer students face unique challenges during the transition to a new academic institution that may make them particularly vulnerable. There is a critical need to expand prevention efforts. Research that improves identification of students at greatest risk for developing impairing depressive symptoms, and etiological processes contributing to depressive symptoms could aid in the provision of limited prevention resources. The northernmost extent of the New Madrid seismic zone in the central USA has been investigated using an integrated approach involving both compressional-wave (P) and horizontally polarized-wave (SH) seismic reflection and regional and dedicated borehole geophysical information in order to assess seismic hazard and risk. Our study area, centered around southernmost Illinois and western Kentucky, USA, represents an area of concentrated facilities (e.g., lock and dam sites and chemical plants on the Ohio River near its confluence with the Mississippi River) as well as an area of high potential soil amplification due to earthquake shaking. PM2.5 emissions are particles that form in the air from complex chemical reactions in sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides which are emitted from nonrenewable power plants. Research shows (Wu, 2023) that both carbon emissions and PM2.5 emissions have negative influences on the environmental and social welfare of citizens. Pesticides are used widely to control weeds and pests in agricultural settings but harm non-target aquatic organisms. We examined the effect of short-term exposure (one week) to pesticide mixtures (low dose: 0.5 μg/L Roundup®, 0.5 μg/L 2,4-D, and 0.4 μg/L atrazine; high dose: 1 μg/L Roundup®, 1 μg/L 2,4-D, and 0.8 μg/L atrazine) on American oyster (Crassostrea virginica, an important shellfish and seafood species) under controlled laboratory conditions. Histological analyses demonstrated the atrophy in oysters' gills, digestive glands, and connective tissue. The protein concentrations and glucose levels dropped significantly in the high-dose treatment. The number of hemocytes in connective tissue …

Humans have contributed to climate change through anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane, chlorofluorocarbons, and nitrous oxide, into the atmosphere. CO2 emissions contribute approximately 79% to the warming of the Earth's surface. Various tactics have been developed to slow down global warming and prepare for climate change, including carbon mineralization. Carbon mineralization is a process that converts CO2 into solid mineral forms, such as carbonates, emulating the natural weathering process of alkaline silicate rocks. Conservation funding is becoming increasingly unstable, shifting from large non-governmental organizations to voluntary user-pay funded organizations. This interaction, known as the indirect effect of aerosols, is an area of interest within the field of atmospheric science. Atmospheric aerosols play an important part in maintaining and altering Earth’s radiation balance and often pose a threat to human health. For this reason, atmospheric aerosols have been studied, typically, during daytime hours, through the use of space-borne instruments and ground-based observations. Currently, however, there are no operational nighttime aerosol retrieval methods available from passive-based satellite observations. This thesis examines how students’ self-efficacy, confidence, and motivation change when students use content area literacy practices in math. This study was guided by the affective theories of Bandura, Maslow, and Guthrie & Wigfield. This study used qualitative research, focusing on collecting data through anecdotal evidence, student self-evaluation surveys, student journal responses, and a teacher research journal. Throughout the six week study, students participated in lessons focused on improving self-efficacy, confidence and motivation. This study was designed to suggest ways to help create healthier player-coach relationships in collegiate sports by collecting data from student-athletes in the NCAA transfer portal. The student-athletes who were selected to participate have successfully transferred through the 2021-2022 Men's ice hockey transfer portal, which allows players to move to a new school and hockey program once in their NCAA careers. Continual learning (CL) enables deep learning models to learn new tasks sequentially while preserving performance on previously learned tasks, akin to the human's ability to accumulate knowledge over time. However, existing approaches to CL face the challenge of catastrophic forgetting, which occurs when a model's performance on previously learned tasks declines after learning the new task. In this dissertation, we focus on the crucial role of input data features in determining the robustness of CL models to mitigate catastrophic forgetting. In this qualitative multiple case study, I collaborated with five students who identified as proficient high-tech symbol-based (HTSB) AAC users, along with seven of their school team members (STMs) and five of their (FTMs) to explore the process of learning to communicate proficiently using HTSB AAC. Data collection involved three rounds of accessible interviews with student AAC users, single interviews with their trusted STMs and FTMs, and an examination of artifacts and documents. East Bank Ridge is a natural reef formation located 18 nautical miles off the coast of South Padre Island, covering an area of over 80 km2, with the southern portion extending into Mexico. There is no previous record of the structural composition or fish community present at the site. The ridge was a well-known fishing site in the local community over the past decades but catch rates have decreased substantially according to personal accounts from local anglers. Delafossite materials demonstrate multifunctional applications due to their excellent catalytic properties, which vary depending on their morphology, particle size, and synthetic method. Herein, a few novel applications of the delafossites are reported, which can be implemented in commercial, medical, and domestic settings. In present work we are presenting two different delafossite CuGaO2 and CuFeO2 nanoparticles and its composite with cotton fiber. Multifunctional cotton fabric is prepared by depositing a uniform coating layer of CuGaO2 and CuFeO2, exhibits excellent photocatalytic self-cleaning, UV blocking, and antimicrobial activity. This research analyzed 100 Instagram posts of ten Saudi women's public figures using a qualitative methodology to explore how their cultural and gender roles and norms are portrayed and how these portrayals align with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 objectives. The findings indicate that these public figures integrate traditional cultural and gender norms with contemporary norms in their online presentations. Traditional attire and familial roles are commonly showcased, underscoring the profoundly ingrained importance of cultural values in alignment with the findings in existing literature. The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a common teleconnection used for seasonal forecasts over the Great Plains of the United States, where the warmer (colder) conditions are associated with the positive (negative) phase. The home literacy environment of a child impacts their emergent literacy skills, and later the level of literacy with which the child enters kindergarten.
