Harvey Wilson Goodwin: A World-Class Performer, Kristen Miller
Theses and Dissertations
The life of Harvey Wilson Goodwin as a female impersonator, known as Harvey Lee, during the 1900s helps to establish a connection for fellow members of the LGBTQIA+ community. His resilience to continue performing in the face of life struggles is an ode to the ever-continuous challenges the community faces throughout time. As such, a digital exhibit has been created in honor of celebrating and remembering the life and times of Harvey Wilson Goodwin, more properly known as a world-class performer during his time. Ultimately, this ensures that his memory continues to live on as a means of connecting the …
Factors That Encourage Or Inhibit Faculty Participation In Development Activities: A Case Study, Kim Kirby
Factors That Encourage Or Inhibit Faculty Participation In Development Activities: A Case Study, Kim Kirby
Theses and Dissertations
As scrutiny increases on higher education to verify the value of a degree from a variety of constituents including parents, students and legislators, institutions of higher education must ensure students are receiving a sound education that meets their goals. Those primarily charged with doing so are faculty who may be content experts, but lack the pedagogical training to provide appropriate instruction. Faculty development is seen as a means to address that disconnect. However, offering quality development is not effective if the faculty is not motivated to engage in those offerings. This study examines the factors that encourage or inhibit faculty …
Investigation Of Collision Cross Sections & Time-Resolved Structural Modification Of Biomolecules, Host-Guest Systems, & Small Molecules Using Ion Mobility & Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry, Noah Mismash
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the structures and structural changes of supramolecular host-guest systems, proteins, and other small molecules in the gas phase, utilizing a combination of computational modeling and experimental data. The primary instruments employed were a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer (FTICR-MS) and an ion mobility mass spectrometer (IM-MS). In the IM-MS experiments, the focus was on investigating the binding behavior of cyclodextrin macrocycles—specifically α, β, and γ-cyclodextrin—with per-fluoroalkane substances (PFAS), which are pervasive environmental contaminants. This investigation involved measuring ion-neutral collision cross sections and using computational modeling to determine whether PFAS compounds bind inside or outside the …
Children's Understanding Of The Internet As A Moderator For Age-Related Trust Tendencies, Travis Hicks
Children's Understanding Of The Internet As A Moderator For Age-Related Trust Tendencies, Travis Hicks
Theses and Dissertations
Children take many factors into consideration when deciding to trust an informant, several of which are applicable to the internet as well. No research has been dedicated to studying whether children’s understanding of the internet’s social complexity (capacity to affect society in both good and bad ways) affects the amount of trust they place in the internet. Child participants (N = 97) ages 5 to 11 years were recruited to examine the relationship between age, time spent online, internet use, and trust in the internet, as well as the influence of social complexity understanding on the relationship between age and …

Using Discrete-Event Simulation To Balance Staff Allocation And Patient Flow Between Clinic And Surgery In A Pediatric Hospital Setting, John Forbus
Theses and Dissertations
We review the problem of a system-level balanced scheduling scenario. A hospital clinic has a queue for patients needing care. After being seen in clinic, many require follow-up surgery, for which they also wait in a queue. The rate-limiting factor is physician availability for both clinic visits and surgical cases. Much existing work has been done to optimize clinic appointments, as well as to optimize surgical appointments. This novel approach models the entire patient journey at the system level, through both clinic and surgery, to optimize the total patient experience. A discrete-event simulation model of the system is built based …
Transformational Leadership And Teacher Commitment: Examining Differences Between Rural And Non-Rural Teachers, Kyle Jonathan Patterson
Transformational Leadership And Teacher Commitment: Examining Differences Between Rural And Non-Rural Teachers, Kyle Jonathan Patterson
Theses and Dissertations
Teacher burnout, absenteeism, and turnover continue to plague schools throughout the United States. Researchers have suggested that a school principal's transformational leadership may impact teacher commitment, though there are limited findings regarding the differences in commitment levels among rural and non-rural teachers. There are also limited findings regarding how the different elements of a principal's transformational leadership (idealized influence, intellectual stimulation, individualized consideration, and inspirational motivation) impact teachers' professional and organizational commitment, if at all. The purpose of this study was to investigate potential differences in commitment levels among rural and non-rural teachers, as well as urban-rural differences in the …
Talking To The Patriarchy: A Linguistic And Rhetorical Investigation Into The Language Of Feminism, Allison Hauser
Talking To The Patriarchy: A Linguistic And Rhetorical Investigation Into The Language Of Feminism, Allison Hauser
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on how those who self-identify as feminist, or more generally as in support of gender equality, use language to define gender equality and to describe people who identify as woman, non-binary and man. Through analysis of fifty-nine interviews conducted in the Spring of 2022, this project articulates how those who support gender equality might be using language in particular patterns when gendered categories are mentioned to emphasize—or unintentionally undercut—a change in social practice related to gender. In highlighting these recurring constructions, this project suggests that supporters of gender equality might be using language in particular ways that …

Factors are often described as one that actively contributes to the production of a result. With communities more at risk of severe flooding due to factors such as climate change in the near future, it is vital to community preparedness and their resilience that we understand those factors that make a community resilient or vulnerable. This study seeks to identify the salient factors that contribute to community and individual preparedness for flooding events. The study examines the shoreline community Ocean Gate in New Jersey to identify common factors that either facilitate or do not facilitate preparedness. This study found that …
Discovery Of Oligomeric States And Small Molecules That Affect Deacylase Activities Of Human Sirtuin-2 (Sirt2), Jie Yang
Theses and Dissertations
Human sirtuin isoform 2 (SIRT2) is an NAD+-dependent enzyme that removes various acyl modifications from lysine residues. SIRT2 is involved in many biological processes, such as transcription, DNA repair, cell proliferation, and metabolism. Due to its diverse functions, SIRT2 is implicated in various disease states, including cancers and neurodegenerative disorders. This dissertation aimed to understand the regulation of SIRT2’s deacylase activities and to discover small molecule modulators of SIRT2. In this work, we found that SIRT2 dimerized in solution, and the dimerization decreased the deacetylase activities without affecting the defatty-acylase activity of this protein. Dimerized SIRT2 dissociates into monomers upon …

Perceptual, Acoustic, And Kinematic Measures Of Speech Precision And Steadiness, Jessica Jamiel Martin
Theses and Dissertations
Clinicians rely on perceptual analysis in the assessment and diagnosis of motor speech disorders. However, connecting perceptual measures to quantitative data has proved challenging. This study uses correlational analyses to explore the relationship between perceptual, acoustic, and kinematic measures. Twenty typical speakers provided speech samples of rapid syllable repetition and speech tasks, which were then rated by 12 listeners for precision and steadiness on a visual analog scale. Data was analyzed to identify significant correlations between the measures. We found evidence of a modest perceptual-acoustic relationship, with results suggesting that acoustic rate may be correlated with perceptual features. Our findings …

Episodic Memory Influences On Decision-Making: An Fmri Investigation Of Young And Older Adult Populations, Julie Van
Theses and Dissertations
Episodic memory involves the ability to remember specific events and personal experiences. It shares computational and neural resources with episodic future thinking, or the ability to simulate future episodes in anticipation of situations that have not yet occurred. Activity in the frontal lobe has been associated with episodic memory formation, as functional connectivity between the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and prefrontal cortex (PFC) has been associated with the organization and manipulation of information when forming memories. At its core, episodic memory extends to several other functional domains by recombining past information to construct future scenarios, facilitating an aspect of "mental …

Caregiver And Clinician Impressions On The Development Of Spoken Language In Autistic Cochlear Implant Users, Courtney Dawn Marks
Theses and Dissertations
The current literature reports that oral language development is not a realistic goal for autistic cochlear implant users (ACI). This is curious, due to the general success of cochlear implants and the fact that many autistic individuals develop strong spoken language skills. Therefore, this study aimed to examine clinician and caregiver insights into spoken language development in the ACI population with the aim of elucidating the factors that influence the poor outcomes reported in the literature. We predicted that cochlear implant function would not be the limiting factor in ACI language development, but that device use and sensory atypicalities might …

Toward Overcoming The Double Empathy Problem: Bridging Autistic And Neurotypical Minds Through Science And Art, Elizabeth Rose Bessey
Toward Overcoming The Double Empathy Problem: Bridging Autistic And Neurotypical Minds Through Science And Art, Elizabeth Rose Bessey
Theses and Dissertations
Historically, autistic people have been portrayed as lacking empathy. However, more recent research reveals mutual, rather than one-sided, gaps in empathy between autistic and neurotypical (NT) people. Decreased empathy can lead to marginalization and even violence, usually toward those in the minority. Regardless of diagnosis, however, there are fundamental aspects of the human experience upon which empathy could be built. In the present study, we explored commonalities and differences in how autistic and NT individuals experience comfort and discomfort. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to discover the causes, emotions, and reactions to comfortable and uncomfortable social situations and environments across autistic …
