Nadezhda Krupskaya And The Reinvention Of Culture In Revolutionary Russia: Populism, Women, And Education In The New Socialist Society, Michael Anthony Iasilli Jan 2023

Nadezhda Krupskaya And The Reinvention Of Culture In Revolutionary Russia: Populism, Women, And Education In The New Socialist Society, Michael Anthony Iasilli

Theses and Dissertations

Most historiography of the Russian Revolution underestimates the impact of the populists of the nineteenth century in shaping political decision-making that led to early Soviet national development as well as the women brought up within the movement. Populism and the legacy of the narodniki is often a separate body of research, or explained within a distinct political category of its own. Likewise, most scholars see the socialist movement at the turn of the century as a divergence away from the populists. However, through the writings and legacy of Nadezhda Krupskaya, Lenin's wife, she demonstrates a political and cultural transcendence of …

The Value Of The Marketplace Of Ideas: Academic Freedom In The American Academy, Daniel J. Perrone Jan 2023

The Value Of The Marketplace Of Ideas: Academic Freedom In The American Academy, Daniel J. Perrone

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation surveys several landmark U.S. Supreme Court cases of academic freedom in the 20th and 21st century to argue for the value of a tolerant and liberal interpretation of unrestricted academic freedom. Central to its argument is a defense of Oliver Wendell Holmes 1919 ruling in Abrams that society is best served where all expressions are tested in a “marketplace of ideas,” a term first used by John Stuart Mill in his 1859 essay, “On Liberty.” In an era of increasing casualization of academic labor (the adjunct labor force) and political paranoia about terror, I conclude that the continual …

Feminism And Identity In Victorian Novels Of Brontës, The Interchangeability Of The Binaries: Center And Margin, Reality And Appearance, Original And Copy, Mutsuko Takahashi

Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation approaches feminism and identity in the novels of the Brontë sisters, in which characters have struggled with the tension between outsider and insider. The study will discuss, in Part I, Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847) and Villette (1853), and in Part II, Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights (1847) and Anne Brontë’s The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848), seen through multiple lenses such as feminism, psychoanalysis, postcolonialism, etc. Various versions of powerless male protagonists in the Brontës are examined, for they help illuminate the situation of the female protagonists. Marginal males try to take over the central position by using …

Becoming American(?): An Auto-Ethnographic Inquiry Of An Ecuadorian(-American) Family’S Identity Formation In The Face Of Long Island Whiteness, Tabitha Andrea Benitez Jan 2023

Becoming American(?): An Auto-Ethnographic Inquiry Of An Ecuadorian(-American) Family’S Identity Formation In The Face Of Long Island Whiteness, Tabitha Andrea Benitez

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the methods, reasons, and strategies of identity formation within an Ecuadorian(-American) family living on Long Island, New York. This autoethnographic research combines family interviews and the author’s own experiences to investigate identity on three prongs: Latinidad, Spanish and English language usage, and honoring and creating homes. Latinidad is both a panethnic term that is assigned to Latinos living within the United States, but is also an identity that is individually practiced by those who identify as Latinos. I investigate the link between Spanish, English, and identity formation to dislodge the supposed link between language and Latinidad. By …

The Monsters And Their Racial Identities In Frankenstein And The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde, Sara N. Rodia Jan 2023

The Monsters And Their Racial Identities In Frankenstein And The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde, Sara N. Rodia

Theses and Dissertations

By examining the monsters through a racial lens in Frankenstein and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, this thesis aims to show how the creature and Hyde can be reflective of the racial stereotypes in Britain in the 19th century. This thesis maps out how the monsters in the novels embody nonwhite races and how the narrative can either keep them in the category of monster, or humanize them. The creature represents nonwhite races, and Shelley critiques racist ideologies of the early 19th century through the creature’s narration in the novel. Further, Shelley demonstrates the monstrous nature …

Gender, Sex, And The Body In Medieval Armenia, Ashley Bozian Jan 2023

Gender, Sex, And The Body In Medieval Armenia, Ashley Bozian

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates textual representation of the body, gender, and sexuality in Armenian chronicles produced between the fifth and eleventh centuries CE. In so doing, it reconstructs the development of Armenian somatology between Zoroastrian and Islamic suzerainties. Specifically, the dissertation examines the modalities by which the body functioned to medieval Armenian cognition as the locus of identity and alterity through the deployment of such devices as the following, to each of which is devoted a chapter: masculinity, femininity, archetypes of sexual morality, legislation of sexual conduct, sexual experientiality (in both temporal and eschatological dimensions), anatomy, and violence. As such, the …

Insight Into Eleutherodactylus Coqui Resilience And Anuran Hypoxia Tolerance Utilizing Pincho, Randy Ortiz Jan 2023

Insight Into Eleutherodactylus Coqui Resilience And Anuran Hypoxia Tolerance Utilizing Pincho, Randy Ortiz

Theses and Dissertations

The onset of high-throughput RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) technology allowed research into transcriptomics to accelerate exponentially aided by the rapid advancement of bioinformatic pipelines. The Pincho workflow, my first research endeavor, is a transcriptomic workflow developed to create an avenue of high-quality reconstructions from RNA-seq data. High-quality reconstruction standards entail longer transcripts, more complete transcripts, and more raw data utilization. We have discovered an ideal trio of assemblers between transABySS, rnaSPAdes and TransLiG that would best reconstruct next-generation sequencing data according to these standards. We utilized Pincho to drive two distinct experiments: (1) exploring the genetic basis for the successful invasion of …

Counterstories Of Sife Experiences: A Critical Analysis Of Students With Interrupted Or Inconsistent Formal Education, Erica Flores Jan 2023

Counterstories Of Sife Experiences: A Critical Analysis Of Students With Interrupted Or Inconsistent Formal Education, Erica Flores

Theses and Dissertations

Students with Interrupted or Inconsistent Formal Education (SIFE) are positioned in our society in such a way that many SIFE cannot advocate for themselves (Advocates for Children of New York, 2010; Linville, 2016), and they must rely on educators to speak on their behalf and address the inequities they face (Advocates for Children of New York, 2010; Linville, 2016; Olivares-Orellana, 2020). Teachers are working to navigate these challenges; however, local and state programs and policies have had a negative impact on the academic success of SIFE in the traditional high school setting (Hos, 2020; Olivares-Orellana, 2020). This study uses Critical …

Interferon Gamma Signaling In Ovarian Cancer Cells, Bijaya Gaire Jan 2023

Interferon Gamma Signaling In Ovarian Cancer Cells, Bijaya Gaire

Theses and Dissertations

Interferon gamma (IFNγ) is a pleiotropic cytokine that can have, depending on the cellular and molecular context, both anti-tumor and pro-tumorigenic functions. IFNγ expression can be induced in cancer cells in response to radiation therapy or immune checkpoint blockade used in cancer treatment. We have previously shown that IFNγ induces expression of the Bcl3 proto-oncogene in ovarian cancer (OC) cells, resulting in their increased proliferation and migration, but the mechanisms are unknown. Here, I demonstrate that the IFNγ-induced Bcl3 expression is dependent on JAK1 and STAT1 signaling, and on p65 NFkB. Furthermore, my data show that the IFNγ-induced Bcl3 expression …

Peer Observations And Feedback In The Virtual Classroom For Secondary Teachers, Collin F. Mehta

Theses and Dissertations

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in several challenges for students and teachers in the United States. The introduction of virtual instruction was a challenge for many, especially teachers. As many educators attempted to determine how to best support their students and teachers, the latter looked for ways to create lessons and connect with students like they had not done before. A solution to help teachers navigate the time spent teaching virtually was peer observations during lessons, which allowed them to seek help from expert teachers as well as lend a hand to those who were struggling. Peer observations have been used …

New Visions Of Africa: How African Students At Historically Black Colleges And Universities Shaped Black Education, 1920-1960, Mark Anthony Lewin Jan 2023

New Visions Of Africa: How African Students At Historically Black Colleges And Universities Shaped Black Education, 1920-1960, Mark Anthony Lewin

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation studies the relationship between African migrant students, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and the Phelps-Stokes Fund. In the early twentieth century, the Phelps-Stokes Fund, a philanthropic organization founded on expanding educational accesses to Africans, African Americans, and Native Americans, launched two educational surveys through Africa. Its educational director, Thomas Jesse Jones, hoped that the tour would provide insight into African educational systems and expand his vision for Black education. The two surveys caught the attention of many Africans interested in expanding their education outside of Africa. As a result, future African state builders such as Nnamdi Azikiwe, Kwame …

Copper, as an essential trace element, is crucial for various biological processes but has also been utilized as a constituent of various pesticides for decades. Copper (II) octanoate is a pesticide utilized as a fungicide and is approved for use in the production of certified organic foods. Previous studies have implicated copper as an inducer of oxidative stress and activator of the Nrf2-ARE pathway. Nrf2 is essential in regulating the transcription of various genes to alleviate toxicity such as those involved in glutathione synthesis and detoxification. Due to the limited toxicological data, this study into the potential induction of oxidative …

When Do Therapist Characteristics Matter Or Do They?, Han Lim Kim Jan 2023

When Do Therapist Characteristics Matter Or Do They?, Han Lim Kim

Theses and Dissertations

This research aims to establish that considerable differences exist between therapists on how much their clients improve in treatment and understand the factors that contribute to such variability. Therapists’ sex, personality, and similarity of their personality with their clients’ personality were examined as moderators of change in treatment outcome. Findings must be interpreted with caution due to limitations of the dataset which make therapists effects hard to separate from client effects. There is variation around the amount of change therapists produce in their clients; however, this variation is much smaller compared to the variance among clients. Female therapists consistently had …

The Role Of Child Maltreatment On Personality From Adolescence To Young Adulthood, Morgan T. Cohen Jan 2023

The Role Of Child Maltreatment On Personality From Adolescence To Young Adulthood, Morgan T. Cohen

Theses and Dissertations

Historically, a defining feature of personality characteristics has been their stability and consistency across time. However, research over the past decade has established patterns of personality change across the lifespan, with the most mean-level trait change occurring between 20 to 40 years old (Roberts & Mroczek, 2009), making young adulthood a fruitful developmental period to study personality change. There are several factors that can influence personality trait change and some literature has suggested that major life events such as childhood adversity can impact the stability and change of personality traits across time. The present study uses two waves of data …

When Crying Turns To Hitting: Examining Maternal Responses To Negative Affect, Brooke Edelman Jan 2023

When Crying Turns To Hitting: Examining Maternal Responses To Negative Affect, Brooke Edelman

Theses and Dissertations

Most children exhibit some form of physical aggression in the first years of life, and physical aggression is particularly common in toddlerhood (Hay, 2005; Lorber et al., 2017; Lorber et al., 2019; Nærde et al., 2014; Tremblay & Nagin, 2005). Further, aggression is conceptualized as a byproduct of frustration and related negative affect (Berkowitz, 1989), and early physical aggression is empirically linked to anger (Lorber et al., 2015). The current study is part of a body of research examining early aggression and will explore the mechanisms by which children’s negative affect escalates to aggression in a brief conflict episode. Given …

Al-Sulami’S Kitab Al-Jihad: Spiritualizing Al-Jihad Al-Asghar To Motivate The Muslim Ummah To Jihad, Mosammat Zakia Sultana Jan 2023

Al-Sulami’S Kitab Al-Jihad: Spiritualizing Al-Jihad Al-Asghar To Motivate The Muslim Ummah To Jihad, Mosammat Zakia Sultana

Theses and Dissertations

‘Ali ibn Tahir al-Sulami’s Kitab al-Jihad, The Book of the Jihad (1105), translated by Niall Christie, is a publicly dictated call to jihad in which al-Sulami attempts to motivate his listeners to go and fight against the Franj who have invaded Muslim lands and captured Jerusalem during the First Crusade. This paper examines how al-Sulami emphasizes the importance of al-jihad al-asghar through the merging of the ‘lesser’ and ‘greater’ jihads, which ultimately leads to him theorizing a reconfigured idea of jihad where he spiritualizes military jihad. Furthermore, this paper focuses on the literary choices al-Sulami makes while using Qur’anic verses …

Animal Instinct: Radical Black Feminism And The Virtue Of The Demonic, Amity S. Nathaniel Jan 2023

Animal Instinct: Radical Black Feminism And The Virtue Of The Demonic, Amity S. Nathaniel

Theses and Dissertations

The impossible strive towards “human” has dominated much of Black feminist studies, but there are scholars such as Sylvia Wynter, Zakiyyah Iman Jackson, Alex Weheliye, and Octavia Butler who've re-configured the concept of humanity in their work by embracing different species and technologies that could provide liberation for Black women. My dissertation explores these new spaces, using Wynter’s “demonic ground” theory as a backbone, to conceptualize Black post-humanism, animality, and the embracing of the “demonic” as radical tools of empowerment. My dissertation aims to establish the consistent and perpetual violence that Black women—from past to present—have endured by living on …

Regulation Of P53 By Trpm6 And Trpm7, Thomas Whitbread Jan 2023

Regulation Of P53 By Trpm6 And Trpm7, Thomas Whitbread

Theses and Dissertations

TRPM6 and TRPM7 are two divalent metal cation channels that also possess a serine/threonine kinase domain. They both play critical roles in cellular and organismal metal homeostasis, and are necessary for proper embryonic development and human health. They may function independently in homomeric units, or act together as heterotetramers that display unique characteristics compared to the homomeric channels. These channel-kinases have increasingly been linked to cancer, displaying altered expression levels in a variety of human cancers and contributing to disease progression. Prior work has shown that TRPM6 and TRPM7 can participate in cancer-related signaling pathways. Here, the potential for TRPM6 …

The opening chapter also features a close reading of Grant Morrison’s Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth (2005) and employs Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish (1995) and Madness and Civilization (1988) as critical frameworks. The dissertation's second chapter, “There is no Sanity Clause,” is a detailed examination of the Joker’s character. The Joker is an advocate for the …

A Return To The Word: Decreasing Division And Creating Community Through Scriptural Poetics And Discourse, Justin Lerner Jan 2023

A Return To The Word: Decreasing Division And Creating Community Through Scriptural Poetics And Discourse, Justin Lerner

Theses and Dissertations

In this project, I seek to use models of thought by seventeenth century metaphysical poets to propose solutions to twenty-first century issues facing Christian faith communities. Biblical scholars, pastors, and theologians indicate pressing topics that affect people within faith communities and the perceptions that secular communities hold of faith communities: the perspective people of faith hold about science, the ways in which vulnerability, expression, and doubt are handled in the church, and the effects of misusing authority. Because of the scientific skepticism held by some believers, many assume faith communities are anti-science. Because people have been pushed away from faith …

The Idea Of Unconscionability In Equitable Adjudication And Its Variegated Manifestations In The Louisiana Territory, Pre-1900, Edad Mercier Jan 2023

The Idea Of Unconscionability In Equitable Adjudication And Its Variegated Manifestations In The Louisiana Territory, Pre-1900, Edad Mercier

Theses and Dissertations

The history of American law in the nineteenth century reveals how antislavery activism, Westward expansionism, labor, and women’s rights activism tested the boundaries, strength, and authority of the federal government over states and individuals. At the turn of the nineteenth century, as people resisted against their social position during one of the most turbulent periods in American history prior to the Civil War, American law simultaneously evolved to recognize and delineate the private and public rights of individuals and communities. My dissertation explains how informal and formal socio-legal customs were used to resolve major ethical, social, and contractual disputes arising …

Predictors And Mediators Of Eating Disorder Pathology In Individuals With Eating Disorders, Alexandra Allam Jan 2023

Predictors And Mediators Of Eating Disorder Pathology In Individuals With Eating Disorders, Alexandra Allam

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past decade there has been accumulating evidence that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and eating disorders frequently co-occur, but little is known about the possible mechanisms that might account for their co-occurrence. Likewise, relatively little research has examined the ways such comorbidities impact the maintenance of or recovery from eating disorder (ED) symptoms after treatment. In this cross-sectional study, we recruited 95 adult participants who had received an ED diagnosis and 24-hour treatment for an ED in the past 10 years, and obtained measures of ADHD symptoms and ED symptoms to explore their association and possible mediators thereof. In particular, …

Adaptations Of World War I Stories Into Screen Dramas: The New “Heritage Films”, Elizabeth Carroll Jan 2023

Adaptations Of World War I Stories Into Screen Dramas: The New “Heritage Films”, Elizabeth Carroll

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines both written and filmic texts to determine the way World War I trauma was depicted in the postwar period and how it is now presented to a modern audience. This study begins with texts written in the immediate postwar period: Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, Vera Brittain’s war memoir Testament of Youth and R.C. Sherriff’s play and novel Journey’s End and draws comparisons to their twentieth and twenty-first century film adaptations. A coda also examines the novel and film The Hours. Using psychology, history, literary criticism, and film theory, I conclude the films are generally more invested in …

Role Of The Ormdls In Keratinocytes, Souad Hatmi Jan 2023

Role Of The Ormdls In Keratinocytes, Souad Hatmi

Theses and Dissertations

The epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, serves as a vital barrier protecting the body from environmental stressors, pathogens, and dehydration. Keratinocytes, the predominant cell type in the epidermis, play a central role in maintaining skin integrity and barrier function. In normal human skin, keratinocytes move from the basal layer to the stratum corneum, the top layer of the epidermis. In their travel, keratinocytes undergo a process of terminal differentiation, loss their ability to proliferate, secrete sphingolipids into the extracellular space, and gradually loss their nucleus and organelles. Sphingolipids, particularly ceramides, are key components of the intercellular lipid lamellae …

Computational Modeling Of Temporal Eeg Responses To Cyclic Binary Visual Stimulus Patterns, Connor M. Delaney Jan 2023

Computational Modeling Of Temporal Eeg Responses To Cyclic Binary Visual Stimulus Patterns, Connor M. Delaney

Theses and Dissertations

The human visual system serves as the basis for many modern computer vision and machine learning approaches. While detailed biophysical models of certain aspects of the visual system exist, little work has been done to develop an end-to-end model from the visual stimulus to the signals generated at the visual cortex measured via the scalp electroencephalogram (EEG). The creation of such a model would not only provide a better understanding of the visual processing pathways but would also facilitate the design and evaluation of more robust visual stimuli for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). A novel experiment was designed and conducted where …

Evaluating The Influence Of Concurrently Available Non-Drug Reinforcers On Drug Reinforcement Using Sophisticated Preclinical Models Of Substance Use Disorder, Madison M. Marcus Jan 2023

Evaluating The Influence Of Concurrently Available Non-Drug Reinforcers On Drug Reinforcement Using Sophisticated Preclinical Models Of Substance Use Disorder, Madison M. Marcus

Theses and Dissertations

The maladaptive allocation of behavior towards cocaine and away from other concurrently available non-drug reinforcers (e.g., family, health, work, etc.) is a key characteristic of cocaine use disorder (CUD) that is embedded into multiple diagnostic criteria for CUD. Accordingly, basic research conducted in a drug-vs-food “choice” context has improved our fundamental knowledge of the behavioral and neurobiological mechanisms of drug reinforcement. However, to date, these preclinical studies have only been conducted with food as the alternative reinforcer. The extent to which other non-drug reinforcers compete with cocaine-taking behavior is unknown. The studies in this dissertation establish two sophisticated discrete-trial cocaine-vs-alternative …
