Determining Correlations Between Global History Teacher’S Metacognitive Awareness And Teaching Demographics, Philip D. Farrelly
Theses and Dissertations
Partnership for 21st Century Skills has continuously identified critical and metacognitive thinking skills to be essential for life and career in post-secondary education and workforce settings. As a response to the Race to the Top (2010) initiative and Common Core State Standards (2009), New York State Board of Regents began an overhaul for all the curriculum standards and anchored assessments. These changes require comprehensive preparation for teachers to effectively transfer thinking practices and skills to their students. Educators and constituents have been consistently apprehensive of its implementation due to the needed preparedness and implications of high-stakes evaluative measures. The purpose …

Theses and Dissertations
The social problem under investigation was that although there had been a general rise in the number of incarcerated women in the United States, these women faced several challenges trying to re-enter society upon their release from incarceration. The purpose of this qualitative single case study research was to explore how a re-entry program, from the perspective of previously incarcerated women, attempted to integrate incarcerated women back into society. The study considered how the re-entry program could be designed to reduce recidivism in women. The research design was a qualitative case study with six data sources: individual interviews of previously …
A Qualitative Inquiry Of Factors Affecting Retention And Graduation Of African American Students In Higher Education, Kim-Marie Cespedes
A Qualitative Inquiry Of Factors Affecting Retention And Graduation Of African American Students In Higher Education, Kim-Marie Cespedes
Theses and Dissertations
African American university students experience lower levels of retention on college campuses (Tinto, 2012). Academic support is important during the first year of college to increase the likelihood of future success. Therefore, it is crucial that African American university students, who sometimes find themselves isolated in a predominantly White institution, are given a range of social and academic support that eases the transition into college (Tinto, 2012). This will result in African American students staying within the institution to complete their college degree. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to explore personal and institutional factors affecting retention and …

African American Women Leaders In Higher Education: An Examination Of Job Satisfaction, Cheryl Chambers
African American Women Leaders In Higher Education: An Examination Of Job Satisfaction, Cheryl Chambers
Theses and Dissertations
Despite the increase of African American women on college campuses, African American women leaders in higher education administration in the United States are significantly underrepresented and under-retained. This lack of representation has lasting effects on leadership pipelines and how African American women leaders are perceived and valued in the workplace. A contributing factor to this disparity is job satisfaction experienced by African American women leaders in academia. Using Black Feminist Thought and Critical Race Theory (CRT) in Higher Education as theoretical frameworks, this critical narrative study described the experiences of eight African American women in higher education leadership to help …

Pre-College Access And Financial Literacy, Oriel C. Straker
Theses and Dissertations
Student loan debt within the United States has reached insurmountable default rates worth trillions of dollars. While the federal government debate lingers on student loan debt reauthorization legislation known as Promoting Real Opportunity, Success, and Prosperity Through Education Reform (PROSPER ACT), a vote must pass to finalize the provision for this legislative policy (Baime, 2018). Meanwhile the issue of high student default rates disproportionately affects minoritized, first-generation, low-income students attending public and private institutions of higher education. This exploratory qualitative case study research approach (Yin, 2009) of the Upward Bound Program, aims to examine the sense of awareness of financial …

The Impact Of Multi-Modal Training In Rebt On Perceived And Observed Clinician Competency, Jessica L. Weiss
The Impact Of Multi-Modal Training In Rebt On Perceived And Observed Clinician Competency, Jessica L. Weiss
Theses and Dissertations
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is a clinical psychotherapeutic intervention that falls under the broad umbrella of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT; Matweychuk et al., 2019). While CBT and the varied models have demonstrated efficacy, a more targeted analysis of clinical competence (Liness et al., 2019), the role of training in a specific model of CBT, such as REBT, and its impact on clinician competency is warranted. From a review of the extant literature in the area, overall, research on the areas of training in DBT, ACT, and CT, and associated clinician competency are to a larger extent greater than that …

The Relationship Of Teacher – Principal Trust And Student Demographics On High School Students’ Achievement In Mathematics, Rickey M. Brown
The Relationship Of Teacher – Principal Trust And Student Demographics On High School Students’ Achievement In Mathematics, Rickey M. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
Although school principals are primarily held accountable for student achievement, they have only an indirect impact on that achievement (Darling-Hammond & Bransford, 2007; Hallinger & Heck, 1996; Supovitz, Sirinides, & May, 2010). Teachers affect student achievement directly, and principals affect teachers. Because faculty trust in the principal is one variable principal’s affect in teachers that could have a positive impact on student achievement (Bryk & Schneider, 2002; Sweetland & Hoy, 2000; Tschannen-Moran, 2001), the challenge for principals is knowing what will impact their teachers’ trust in them (Blake & MacNeil, 1998). This study investigated relational trust and its influence on …
Relationships Between Cognitive Abilities And Patterns Of Children’S Classroom Behavior At Age Nine, Seré Elizabeth Politano
Relationships Between Cognitive Abilities And Patterns Of Children’S Classroom Behavior At Age Nine, Seré Elizabeth Politano
Theses and Dissertations
Teacher reports are often used to indicate how well children perform in school and help clinicians identify behavioral problems, such as inattentiveness (Charach et al., 2009). However, various factors may have an effect on teacher ratings of children’s behavior, which can have downstream effects on children’s academic achievement (Teisl et al., 2001). Given teachers play a large role in identifying at-risk youth, it is important to understand how their reports of children’s behavior are associated with childhood outcomes such as cognitive development, which is closely tied to academic achievement (Metcalfe et al., 2013). The present study aimed to identify patterns …
Irrational Beliefs Among Competitive High School Student Athletes: Are They General Or Context-Driven?, Kathleen Everson
Irrational Beliefs Among Competitive High School Student Athletes: Are They General Or Context-Driven?, Kathleen Everson
Theses and Dissertations
While student-athletes strive for high performance both athletically and academically, and there are a number of variables that can predict performance, understanding the role of unhealthy or irrational patterns of thinking or beliefs as it relates to objective measures of performance has not been readily studied (Turner & Barker, 2013) and even less so among youth. This research examined if irrational beliefs that are context specific to performance settings (academic vs. athletic) are more predictive of academic and athletic performance than those more general irrational beliefs among 30 high-school student athlete basketball players. While both general and context-specific irrational beliefs …

On The Importance Of True Peer Norms In The Assessment Of English Learners: A Validation Study Of The Ortiz Picture Vocabulary Acquisition Test, Jane Yan Ting Wong
Theses and Dissertations
Traditional efforts in aiding English learners (ELs) to achieve better test performance such as modifications to the testing process or the use of native language or nonverbal tests are problematic and disregard the unique language developmental experiences of ELs (Ortiz & Wong, 2022). The Ortiz Picture Vocabulary Acquisition Test (Ortiz PVAT; Ortiz, 2018), an assessment of English receptive vocabulary, incorporates ELs’ proportion of lifetime exposure to English (LEE) in test norms to allow for true peer comparison, thus ensuring test fairness in measurement and score interpretation. The current study aimed to add to the existing validity evidence for the test …
Assessing The Perception Of Two Generations In The Maintenance Of Honor Killing: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Litika Sharma
Assessing The Perception Of Two Generations In The Maintenance Of Honor Killing: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Litika Sharma
Theses and Dissertations
Honor killing is a complex social phenomenon arising from system norms that govern family, social unit, and community relationships in countries where it occurs. It is particularly prevalent in communities or societies where it is ingrained in traditions and heritages. Although it is a global phenomenon (Warraich, 2005) found in many South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, South America, and several European countries (Ali, 2008), there has not been any concerted effort to study the phenomenon more systematically. This proposed study is the first attempt to explore more systematically some of the factors that maintain honor killing. To that end, …
Emotion Control, Overreactive Parenting, And Mothers’ Executive Functions, Serah Jaya Narine
Emotion Control, Overreactive Parenting, And Mothers’ Executive Functions, Serah Jaya Narine
Theses and Dissertations
Evidence suggests that mothers’ emotion control difficulties are associated with their self-reported and observed overreactive parenting. Specifically, mothers who have difficulties managing their negative emotions and experience more anger, are more likely to discipline harshly. In addition to this emotional process, evidence suggests that poorer cognitive executive function (EF) is also associated with mothers’ use of overreactive discipline. However, the association between EF performance and overreactive parenting is inconsistent. The purpose of this study is to assess how different EFs may moderate the association between emotion control and overreactive parenting. I hypothesized that (1) mothers’ emotion control would be negatively …
Genetically Encoded Iron Sensor Cell Line: A Model For Studying Ferroptosis And Cellular Iron Metabolism, Daoud F. Rahman
Genetically Encoded Iron Sensor Cell Line: A Model For Studying Ferroptosis And Cellular Iron Metabolism, Daoud F. Rahman
Theses and Dissertations
Cell death is a biological process that is essential in proper cellular homeostasis, development, and function. Malfunction of this system can lead to different diseases and cancers. Ferroptosis is a form of cell death that occurs as a result of the accumulation of lipid peroxides, that are dependent on intracellular levels of iron. Iron is essential to multiple metabolic processes in the cell, including the catalyzation of lipid peroxides. Thus, intracellular iron levels must be tightly regulated. Our goal is to create a cellular model to study and detect changes in intracellular iron levels. Through the use of a genetically …
The Contemporary Novel As Theology: How Narratives Of Conversion Experience In Literature Expose The Reality Of Lived Belief, Elizabeth Ann Walker Thomae
The Contemporary Novel As Theology: How Narratives Of Conversion Experience In Literature Expose The Reality Of Lived Belief, Elizabeth Ann Walker Thomae
Theses and Dissertations
To think of the human life as a walking, talking, living and breathing poem radically changes the way we view our day-to-day experiences. A strong tie exists between the written word and the human aesthetic experience, especially concerning religion, a tie that has existed since literature’s inception. Many great philosophers, psychologists, historians, and theologians alike have attempted to grasp what truly composes a religious experience and what gives these experiences meaning. Herein lies the dilemma: religious experience escapes concrete explanation, yet is felt and expressed by every person, albeit in an array of different ways. Religious experience is beyond the …
The Impact Of Family Environment And Religion In Purple Hibiscus And Beloved, Thoa Phan
The Impact Of Family Environment And Religion In Purple Hibiscus And Beloved, Thoa Phan
Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the repercussions of slavery-induced dehumanization and trauma depicted in Toni Morrison’s Beloved, and explores Kambili’s stifling home life characterized by her father’s rigid Catholicism in Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Morrison’s Beloved emphasizes the importance of personal engagement with the history of slavery so as to fully comprehend its horrors and overcome them. In Purple Hibiscus, the paper investigates the role religion plays in causing trauma, as Eugene’s strict adherence to Catholicism and dismissal of traditional rituals inflict both physical and psychological pain on his family. The complex and multifaceted depiction of religion in these novels …

Psychological Realism Within The Detective Genre, Juanita Rodriguez
Psychological Realism Within The Detective Genre, Juanita Rodriguez
Theses and Dissertations
The mundane depicts realness without dramatizing. We acknowledge how writers choose to illustrate their stories, emphasizing thematic content with conceptual individuals. We analyze how characters view the world and vice versa. I intend to highlight the subgenre: psychological realism- specifically- in detective fiction. Detectives cannot solve their inner desire. Their attachment to cases is due to gradual obsession. Coping mechanisms suppress this, leading to repetition. The purpose of the mode will help interpret the reasoning behind the intense interest. Authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Sherlock Holmes, and Walter Mosley provide an understanding of mindsets and desire in situations. I …
