Applied Machine Learning In Development Of Geospatial Information Tools For Sustainable Groundwater Management, Saul Gallegos Ramirez Mar 2023

Applied Machine Learning In Development Of Geospatial Information Tools For Sustainable Groundwater Management, Saul Gallegos Ramirez

Theses and Dissertations

Groundwater plays an important role in sustainable water resource management. Globally, the development of groundwater resources for irrigation provides a stable water source and enhances food security. However, developing groundwater resources is difficult, requiring the collection, synthesis, analysis, and dissemination of information about groundwater in an accessible, effective manner so decision makers have the knowledge and tools to implement sustainable management strategies. In this dissertation, I present solutions to assist with the paucity of groundwater data. The first problem I explore is extending the Palmer Drought Severity Index to near present day. This dataset is crucial to current groundwater imputation …

Alegaatr The Bandit, Ethan Pedersen Mar 2023

Alegaatr The Bandit, Ethan Pedersen

Theses and Dissertations

One design strategy for developing intelligent agents is to create N distinct behaviors. At each time step during task execution, the agent, or bandit, chooses which of the N behaviors to use. Traditional bandit algorithms often (1) assume the environment is stationary, (2) focus on asymptotic performance, and (3) do not incorporate external information available to them. Each of these simplifications limits these algorithms such that they often cannot be used successfully in practice. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm, called AlegAATr, as a step toward overcoming these deficiencies. AlegAATr utilizes a technique called Assumption-Alignment Tracking (AAT), proposed …

Jtag-Based Extraction Of Processor And Memory Data For Anomaly Detection In Cyber-Physical Systems, Jonathan D. Price

Theses and Dissertations

This document is a compilation of two scholarly articles that together compose a graduate thesis. The first article assesses the viability of commercially available JTAG debuggers to access runtime memory and register data, finding that commercial JTAG debuggers are not suitable for runtime data extraction for anomaly detection in cyber-physical systems due to slow memory and register access times. Because of this gap in technology, the second article designs, implements, and tests a novel, custom-built architecture named JTAG Data Extraction Tool (J-DET) for program counter-sampling. J-DET is the first device purpose-built to extract processor information in runtime for attack detection; …

Rate Effects In Aircraft Learning Curves, Caleb J. Ahern

Theses and Dissertations

Across the Department of Defense (DoD), a wide variety of analytical tools are employed by cost analysts to estimate weapon system costs. One of the techniques widely employed by practitioners is the learning curve (LC). Although learning curves have been widely studied, using rate-adjustments or production rate effects (PRE), their usage have only intermittently been evaluated in place of using the traditional learning curve. Previous studies analyzing production rate found mixed results. This research aims to examine aircraft production data to determine if production rate model is preferrable in United States Air Force programs. Additionally, this PRE research seeks to …

Influence Of Dilute Silicon Carbide Nanoparticle Additions To The Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of Laser Powder Bed Fusion Molybdenum, Nathan E. Ellsworth

Theses and Dissertations

Consolidation of pure molybdenum through laser powder bed fusion and other additive manufacturing techniques is complicated by a high melting temperature, thermal conductivity, and ductile-to-brittle transition temperatures. Nano-sized silicon carbide particles (0.1 wt%) were homogeneously mixed with molybdenum powder and the printing characteristics, chemical composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties were compared to pure molybdenum for scan speeds of 100, 200, 400, and 800 mm/s. The addition of silicon carbide improved the consolidation and mechanical properties and the oxygen content was reduced. Two mechanisms of oxygen reduction were identified as responsible for the improvements: oxidation of free carbon and the creation …

Coupling To Quantum Topological Order In Superconducting Qubit Systems, Seth T. Hyra Mar 2023

Coupling To Quantum Topological Order In Superconducting Qubit Systems, Seth T. Hyra

Theses and Dissertations

The coupling of superconducting qubits to non-trivial topological phases offers a means of improving existing quantum computational capabilities in lieu of a fully realized topological quantum computer. I will show that although such systems do not completely avoid the necessary errors associated with an energetic qubit basis, they do provide a potential avenue for decoherence free quantum memory. Further, the physics behind such systems enables exploration of the nature of non-Abelian anyons, as well as the remaining challenges in realization of true topological quantum computation.

Towards An Understanding Of The Thermodynamic Properties Of Crtao4: A Computational Perspective, Tanner B. Gordon Mar 2023

Towards An Understanding Of The Thermodynamic Properties Of Crtao4: A Computational Perspective, Tanner B. Gordon

Theses and Dissertations

Materials that can withstand higher temperatures are paramount for next-generation aircraft design. Hypersonic capabilities and jet-turbine engines operate in extreme environments. Choosing materials that have high thermal stability and oxidation resistance for these applications can increase engine efficiency, reduce size, weight and power (SWaP), and increase the maneuverability of the aircraft. The mixed oxide CrTaO4 has been experimentally observed to significantly contribute to oxidation resistance at high temperatures. However, and despite its significance, its properties remain largely unknown. This work explores the thermal properties of this material from a multi-scale approach, by obtaining an accurate description of the thermodynamics …

Material Property Dependence Of Nanoparticle Silicon Carbide Alloying In Additively Manufactured Molybdenum, Andrew P. Mason Mar 2023

Material Property Dependence Of Nanoparticle Silicon Carbide Alloying In Additively Manufactured Molybdenum, Andrew P. Mason

Theses and Dissertations

The structural performance of additively manufactured Mo printed by LPBF can be significantly improved by nanoparticle alloying. Previous AFIT studies of SiC nanoparticle addition conducted by Ellsworth (2022) et al. demonstrated increased powder consolidation, leading to reduced porosity, increased microhardness, and a shift in atomic defect concentrations. The addition of defected SiC particles is proposed to reduce in situ oxidation by acting as a sacrificial oxidizing agent and contributing to the formation of Mo disilicide secondary phases. This study investigated the relationship between laser powder bed fusion Mo microscale and nanoscale properties with varying SiC particle size while maintaining a …

Exploring Variations In Fast Curing Plastic Scintillator Formulations: Optimizing Tpo And Evaluating The Effects Of High-Z Loading And Novel Waveshifters, Andrew K. Nesbitt

Theses and Dissertations

Organic plastic scintillators are widely used due to their relative low cost, physical robustness, and fast timing properties, but typically provide lower light yields and photon sensitivity compared to other alternatives. Photocuring novel plastics offers a viable method for producing fast curing plastic scintillators. The current formulations include an acrylic polymer base and utilize diphenyl (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) phosphine oxide (TPO) as the photo-initiator for polymerization; however at higher concentrations of TPO may adversely affect scintillator light output. The present research refined the optimal TPO concentrations that fully cure these acrylic-base scintillators and maximize light production to 0.4-0.5% by weight. Additionally, this …

Modeling Radiation Exposure On Flight Missions To Analyze Aircrew Risk, Camila V. Quintero Hilsaca

Theses and Dissertations

GCR and SPE comprise the majority of the ionizing radiation experienced in the upper atmosphere within flight-altitude environments. Although previous studies have analyzed radiation doses from single sources on civilian flight operations, there is a lack of research focused on dose received by military personnel during flight from both sources simultaneously. In-flight radiation environments are modeled through the MCNP6 for two separate aircraft, an Air Force A-10 and a Boeing 737. Particle fluence values for galactic cosmic rays and solar particle events for four separate flight paths are determined using the CARI-7A software and the SIRE2 toolkit, respectively. MCNP6 code …

Regular Simplices Within Doubly Transitive Equiangular Tight Frames, Evan C. Lake Mar 2023

Regular Simplices Within Doubly Transitive Equiangular Tight Frames, Evan C. Lake

Theses and Dissertations

An equiangular tight frame (ETF) yields an optimal way to pack a given number of lines into a given space of lesser dimension. Every ETF has minimal coherence, and this makes it potentially useful for compressed sensing. But, its usefulness also depends on its spark: the size of the smallest linearly dependent subsequence of the ETF. When formed into a sensing matrix, a larger spark means a lower chance that information is lost when sensing a sparse vector. Spark is difficult to compute in general, but if an ETF contains a regular simplex, then every such simplex is a linearly …

Assessment Of Emergency Cooling Requirement For Nuclear Reactor Loss-Of-Coolant Accidents, Michael T. Lindsay Mar 2023

Assessment Of Emergency Cooling Requirement For Nuclear Reactor Loss-Of-Coolant Accidents, Michael T. Lindsay

Theses and Dissertations

The 2022 Russia-Ukraine War marks the first time in modern history of conventional military forces targeting and seizing control of an operational nuclear power plant. Power supply and operational cooling systems are critical to avert reactor loss-of-coolant accidents (LOCA) in the event of emergency shutdown, or SCRAM. A wartime non-design based reactor accident causing loss of reactor power and coolant supply would require an emergency heat exchange via coolant to mitigate reactor core heat. At present, the military does not have a well-defined model which characterizes this requirement for operational planning should such an event occur. SCALE 6.2.4 is used …

Pulsed Power Neutron Production With Deuterated Polymer Accelerator Targets, Anthony O. Hagey Mar 2023

Pulsed Power Neutron Production With Deuterated Polymer Accelerator Targets, Anthony O. Hagey

Theses and Dissertations

This document presents an investigation of the effect of deuterated polyethylene accelerator targets on the neutron fluence from a local mass injection dense plasma focus driven by the United States Naval Research Laboratory’s Hawk pulsed-power generator. After successful production of thin targets, the acquisition of thicker targets, and testing inside Hawk, it was found that the presence of a deuterated polyethylene target increased the neutron fluence. Results suggested that fluence can significantly increase with the presence of a deuterated target vs a nondeuterated target. Additive manufacturing printing was used as a production method in order to determine if deuterated accelerator …

Induced Correlation And Its Effects In The Performance Of Fused Classification Systems, Mary K. Collins

Theses and Dissertations

Classification systems are abundant in modern-day life. The United States Air Force uses classification systems across many applications such as radar, satellite, and infrared sensing just to name a few. Combining classification systems allows an opportunity to get more accurate results. Using the known information from already built and tested systems that can be mathematically combined can give insight into the performance of the fused system without having to build a combined system. Leveraging this can save time, resources, and money. This work examines the correlation effects of fusing two classifier systems, each with only two labels, using the Boolean …

Air Force Digital Badges, Jacob Chan Mar 2023

Air Force Digital Badges, Jacob Chan

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force talent management and force development systems are antiquated. Airmen records are often stored on different Air Force information systems. Existing records sometimes lack granularity and context to recognize Airmen skills. Digital badges are a newer technology utilized by academia and industry to recognize member skills. However, military badging research is sparse and existing studies do not provide sufficient evidence on the value of digital badging to the Air Force. The studies: (1) lack background research on badging; (2) do not provide quantitative data on the effects of badging; and (3) issued badges through commercial entities which may …

Cellphone-Acoustics Based Suas Detection And Tracking, Ryan D. Clendening Mar 2023

Cellphone-Acoustics Based Suas Detection And Tracking, Ryan D. Clendening

Theses and Dissertations

Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) are an easily accessible technology that has become an increasingly large threat to US critical systems. This threatening technology demands using fault-tolerant, low-cost, replaceable, and accurate sensing resources, which counter the ubiquitous nature of sUAS [1]. Therefore, the methods developed in this thesis detect and track sUAS using easily accessible sensing resources, such as cellphones. First, we develop an acoustics sensor network-based sUAS detection methodology. In the latter effort, a deep learning model is trained using the acoustics data from the data collection to predict sUAS range from a cellphone. Combined, these two efforts demonstrate …
