Macroeconomic Determinants Of Stock Market Development In Sample African Economies, Ehab Ayoub
Macroeconomic Determinants Of Stock Market Development In Sample African Economies, Ehab Ayoub
Theses and Dissertations
This research paper studies the relationship between macroeconomic determinants as independent variables and different measures of stock market development as dependent variables across selected emerging economies in Africa for the period of 2002 to 2021, with a quarterly frequency using time series analysis. The independent variables used are Core Inflation, Deposit Rate, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), FX Rate against USD, Domestic Credit, Gross Domestic Product (Real GDP), Exports, Imports, External Debt, and Foreign Reserves. We use these variables as our main determinants of measuring economic growth. With regards to stock market development, we use four proxy measures as our benchmark, …
Mental Health And Well-Being Among Refugee-Aid Workers In Egypt, Mahmoud Khattab
Mental Health And Well-Being Among Refugee-Aid Workers In Egypt, Mahmoud Khattab
Theses and Dissertations
Refugee-aid workers are positioned in the middle between the realities and suffering of refugees and the detachment of the organizations and their donors. They carry the burden of accommodating both realities as the connecting link between both worlds. This study has found that the continuous exposure to the traumatic stories that refugees go through has negative implications on the mental health and well-being of the workers providing services to these refugees. Additionally, a lack of resources and negative management cultures impose stress on the refugee-aid worker. Negligence and failure by organizations to mitigate these stressors lead to a deterioration in …
Trauma And Linguistic Markers For Symptom Severity In Prolonged Exposure For Primary Care, As Observed Through The Use Of Narrative Review, Robert Alexander Ryan
Trauma And Linguistic Markers For Symptom Severity In Prolonged Exposure For Primary Care, As Observed Through The Use Of Narrative Review, Robert Alexander Ryan
Theses and Dissertations
Traditional trauma therapies used in the primary care setting (e.g., hospital, medical clinic, etc.) have posed challenges to patient success because they are not designed for the shorter duration treatment that is typical in primary care settings. One alternative solution is the Prolonged-Exposure for Primary Care protocol (PE-PC) that utilizes prolonged exposure using a brief take home assignment and several journaling prompts that are processed using principles from Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). Still in its early stages of development, the PE-PC protocol can provide symptom relief in as little as four, 30-minute sessions and reflects one of the first trauma …
Substance Use Disorders And The Behavioral Effects Of Novel And Existing Compounds, Sarah Uribe
Substance Use Disorders And The Behavioral Effects Of Novel And Existing Compounds, Sarah Uribe
Theses and Dissertations
These investigations aimed to study the effects of experimental compounds for use in treating and preventing substance use disorders, particularly opioid use disorder (OUD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). Identifying and testing potential medications for these two diseases is critical since current FDA-approved medications are only modestly effective, and addiction continues to spread. We previously demonstrated that co-administration of morphine and MP-III-024 produced synergistic effects in hot plate and von Frey assays. This study evaluated whether MP-III-024 also produced synergistic effects in behavioral tests sensitive to the side effects of morphine. Our findings suggest that co-administration of morphine and MP-III-024 …
Thermal Inactivation Of Salmonella, Escherichia Coli, And Enterococcus Faecium Nrrl B-2354 In Pasta Matrices, Kristi Shannon Gowans
Thermal Inactivation Of Salmonella, Escherichia Coli, And Enterococcus Faecium Nrrl B-2354 In Pasta Matrices, Kristi Shannon Gowans
Theses and Dissertations
Limited data are currently available characterizing the thermal resistance of foodborne pathogens in semolina flour and intermediate pasta matrices representative of commercial conditions during mixing, extrusion, and drying. These data are essential to pasta producers seeking to be compliant with federal regulations since Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli demonstrate survival in wheat flour and dried pasta products. This study investigated the heat resistance of Salmonella, pathogenic E. coli, and E. faecium NRRL B-2354 in raw semolina flour and partially dried pasta intermediates via thermal death time (TDT) studies. This study also assessed the appropriateness of E. faecium NRRL B-2354 as …
The Impact Of Stress On Graduate Students’ Organizational Citizenship Behavior: The Moderating Role Of Mentorship, Victoria Garcia
The Impact Of Stress On Graduate Students’ Organizational Citizenship Behavior: The Moderating Role Of Mentorship, Victoria Garcia
Theses and Dissertations
Stress is one of the most researched topics in organizational psychology because of the important implications for overall health. Graduate school has many different stressors that put that specific population at a higher risk for the adverse effects of stress. Stress not only has implications for health but specific behaviors like organizational citizenship behaviors. The present study surveyed a sample of graduate students and examined ways in which mentorship can moderate the relation between stress, workload, physical symptoms, and OCBs. Eighty-five graduate students completed an anonymous survey. Results indicated that stress significantly predicted OCBs in graduate students. Also, mentorship was …
Not Acting, Reacting: An Analysis Of Reaction Videos, Reactors, Viewers And Authenticity, Cameron Cox
Not Acting, Reacting: An Analysis Of Reaction Videos, Reactors, Viewers And Authenticity, Cameron Cox
Theses and Dissertations
The digital age has brought about a new type of YouTuber content creator, the Reactor. Reactors film their supposed first-time reaction to various online videos including trailers, film, television etc. Reactors represent a new performance mode at the intersection of audience member and performer attempting to recreate a lost sense of community in an increasingly digitally mediated world. The act of filming one's reaction calls into question the authenticity of a reaction however, it is this very authenticity that drives Viewers to watch the content made by Reactors. Using reaction videos to the first year of Marvel Studios Disney+ shows …
Losing Control To The Controller: Mmorpg Video Game Addiction And Mediating Roles Of Player Motivations, Abbie Speed
Losing Control To The Controller: Mmorpg Video Game Addiction And Mediating Roles Of Player Motivations, Abbie Speed
Theses and Dissertations
Using a quantitative survey distributed to regular players of MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games) (N = 777), the current study employed a correlation matrix and a parallel mediation model to assess the relationship between play frequency, motivating factors, and video game addiction. The results demonstrated that each of these elements were related to one another to varying degrees (p < .001). The motivating factors identified by Yee (2006) included achievement, immersion, and social interaction, which were tested as mediators and indicated that achievement (a1 = 0.2817, p < 0.001; b1 = 0.4073, p < 0.001) and immersion (a2 = 0.3217, p < 0.001; b2 = 0.2574, p < 0.001) are mediators in the relationship of play frequency and addiction. Social interaction was not significant as a mediator (a3 = 0.3217, p < 0.001; b3 = -0.0235, p = 0.6753). Higher levels of addiction were present for those who were motivated by achievement (rewards) and immersion (storyline/diversion) to play more frequently per week. However, those who were motivated by social interaction to play frequently did not demonstrate a statistically significant relationship with higher levels of addiction. Findings suggest that motivating factors of gameplay may have a mediating effect on the relationship between play frequency and addiction.
The Code Of The School: Investigating The Age At Which The"Code"Begins To Influence School Violence Among Students, Yoo Akakpo
Theses and Dissertations
The school-to-prison pipeline has sparked debate about disciplinary measures amongpolicymakers and school officials. Despite extensive research into student violence, there is little data on the age at which students start using violence in school. This study uses a critical qualitative analysis to determine what age or grade level students understand the importance of fighting, respect, and social status. I conducted the study's research in the Midwest, primarily focusing on students suspended after fighting in Chicago and Bloomington-Normal, Illinois. The Code of the School will be utilized as a theoretical basis to explore this qualitative study of African American students and …

Specifically, the three research questions were: (1) how does athletic identity, and its dimensions (social identity, exclusivity, and negative affectivity), and life satisfaction change in college student-athletes over a college career? (2) what are student-athlete perspectives on the factors influencing changes of athlete identity over a college career? And (3) what is the relationship between athletic identity and life satisfaction? The study included …
Impact Of Applying Visual Design Principles To Boardwork In A Mathematics Classroom, Jennifer Rose Canizales
Impact Of Applying Visual Design Principles To Boardwork In A Mathematics Classroom, Jennifer Rose Canizales
Theses and Dissertations
Though black boards and white boards have been a fundamental tool in the classroom for over a century, little research has been done on how to best design and present information using these boards. My study takes visual design principles and applies them to boardwork in a mathematics classroom to better organize and clarify the content. This research shows that students notice boardwork, have strong opinions on what makes boardwork good, and that the application of design principles on boards has a significant impact on students and the teacher. Students felt their cognitive load was lightened and that they were …
Developing Tools For Introducing Modifications Into The Chicken Genome, Zachary Eldon Olsen
Developing Tools For Introducing Modifications Into The Chicken Genome, Zachary Eldon Olsen
Theses and Dissertations
The chicken is a classic model organism that has provided key insights into embryonic development. Chicken embryos can be directly manipulated and observed during development while retaining the potential to reach adulthood. Despite this benefit, the utility of the chicken in studying development has been limited by the difficulty of introducing genetic changes to the genome. The recent development of cell culture conditions for chicken primordial germ cells (cPGC) has made it feasible to produce transgenic chickens, but there is still a lack of tools for introducing genetic modifications into cPGCs. Recombinase Mediated Cassette Exchange (RMCE) is a technique that …

An ( R )-4-Phenyl-1,3-Oxazolidine-2-Thione Mediated Approach To 2, 3-Disubstituted Oxetanes And The Key Hydroxyethyl Isostere Of The Hiv Protease Inhibitor Darunavir. Preparation Of Non-Evans Syn Glycolate Aldol Addition Products. A New Direction For The Curtius Rearrangement In The Dehomologation Of Alpha-Alkoxycarboxylic Acids, Jordan Michael Witte
Theses and Dissertations
Since the emergence of AIDS in the early 1980s, strategies to mitigate the disease remain a high priority for medical professionals worldwide. While there is no broadly available cure or vaccine for HIV/AIDS at this time, early diagnosis and treatment can drastically reduce the severity of the infection. To this end, antiretroviral drugs are regularly employed to combat the virus and achieve HIV latency in infected patients. One such drug, Darunavir, has been used as a highly effective HIV protease inhibitor. Recently, a growing interest in derivatization of Darunavir to test for improved drug efficacy has prompted great efforts in …
"Love The Sinner, Hate The Sin"Does N'T Feel Like Love: Exploring Queer Former Catholics' Narratives Of Lived Experiences, Taylor Kay Newswander
"Love The Sinner, Hate The Sin"Does N'T Feel Like Love: Exploring Queer Former Catholics' Narratives Of Lived Experiences, Taylor Kay Newswander
Theses and Dissertations
The Catholic Church is one of the oldest and most widespread religious organizations in the world. Most people are familiar with the Church in some way, but very few know what it is like to be a sexual or gender minority while being raised in a religion as conservative and set in its ways as the Catholic Church. We know that queer people do not stop existing just because one is religious, but not much is known about the sense-making that goes into performing both queer and Catholic identities. Narratives are particularly important tools of both sense-making and performance for …
Class, Politics And Family Life: A Study Of Progressive Working-Class Parenting, Elise Danielle West
Class, Politics And Family Life: A Study Of Progressive Working-Class Parenting, Elise Danielle West
Theses and Dissertations
Parenting is entwined with political and social class realities, but rarely is this intersection explored. Seminal research in social reproduction theory finds that working-class parents pass on to their kids a “sense of constraint,” while middle-class parents successfully transmit class advantages that reproduce inequality (Lareau, 2011, p. 3). This research could be enriched by a political analysis that considers parents’ political ideology. On the other hand, research addressing ideological reproduction describes a model of progressive parenting that takes a stand against inequality, but it is not known how this model applies to working-class parents (Lakoff 2002). In this exploratory project, …
The Seven Chambers Of Prince Prospero, Elliot Paul Butler
The Seven Chambers Of Prince Prospero, Elliot Paul Butler
Theses and Dissertations
The Seven Chambers of Prince Prospero is a multi-movement programmatic work inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death. In Poe’s short story, Prince Prospero throws a lavish masquerade within his castle while the world outside suffers a deadly plague referred to as the “Red Death.” In Prospero’s castle exist seven peculiar chambers, each one a different color, in which partygoers mingle and celebrate life in the face of death. In this piece, each of the seven rooms are depicted with short character pieces, concluding with a musical interpretation of the dramatic narrative described in Poe’s short …
Concerto For' Smacken, Zachary Jinpui Noland
Concerto For' Smacken, Zachary Jinpui Noland
Theses and Dissertations
Concerto for ‘Smacken was written for Sam Macken, a bassoon Ph.D. candidate at the University of Colorado-Boulder. Dedicated to our time in high school as well as college together, this composition focuses on displaying both Sam’s virtuosity as a bassoonist in addition to my emerging compositional style rooted in both the jazz and classical tradition. Movement I, Ursinae, is a slow ballad that heavily draws upon neo-romantic and jazz styles. Ursinae begins with an abstraction of an F minor chord that slowly materializes into a steady pulsating beat. Counterpoint plays a heavy role in different sections of the composition in …
On Your Block: Familial Representations Within The Hit Netflix Show On My Block, Grace Telfer
On Your Block: Familial Representations Within The Hit Netflix Show On My Block, Grace Telfer
Theses and Dissertations
Family is a large part of everyone’s everyday lives, and so is the media. In this study, I examine the Netflix hit show On My Block, looking at the family structures presented, the family interactions and functions, the influences that family has on the main characters, and the familial messages presented through the show. This is significant to both family and media studies as it adds to the conversation surrounding family representation within the media. In this study, I examined the first three seasons of On My Block using an open coding methodology to discern what emerged regarding my research …
Community-Based Risk Communication During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Biwoc Framework, Raven Latice Preston
Community-Based Risk Communication During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Biwoc Framework, Raven Latice Preston
Theses and Dissertations
The thesis explores the impact of COVID-19 on marginalized communities, particularly Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), and the disparities in risk communication that affect them. The author argues that traditional risk communication practices are often hegemonic and fail to consider the embodied experiences of marginalized communities. The thesis proposes a framework, Cooperative Risk Communication, that values Black Feminist and intersectional experiences to inform risk communication measures as an extension of institutional communication. Highlighting environmental and medical racism as factors that contribute to the vulnerability of BIPOC communities to COVID-19 and other diseases. The thesis concludes that culturally competent …
Saying Way More Than Gay: Polarized Adoption Of Ultimate Terms In U.S. Legislation, Shelby E. Limbach
Saying Way More Than Gay: Polarized Adoption Of Ultimate Terms In U.S. Legislation, Shelby E. Limbach
Theses and Dissertations
Due to rampant political polarization in the United States this thesis investigated the role of language in perpetuating opposing ideologies. A critical rhetorical cluster analysis of Florida’s House Bill 1557, political rhetoric, and public discourse reveals the contemporary power of ultimate terms. Within the United States terms such as “parental rights” and “Don’t Say Gay” operate to further divisive discourses due to their simultaneous perceptions as god and devil terms. In the United States such buzzwords are associated with vastly different valences dependent on individual ideological value systems, which often correlate with one’s political affiliations. Existing scholarship on the ideograph …
Mothering Experiences Of Women In Jail, Bothwell Piason
Mothering Experiences Of Women In Jail, Bothwell Piason
Theses and Dissertations
Women make relatively small proportions of incarcerated population worldwide, but the rate at which they have been incarcerated over the past four decades in the U.S. has outpaced that of their male counterparts. Although carceral trends show declining patterns in prison population numbers, the jailed population continues on an upward trend (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2022), studies have focused more on prison than jail. The disproportional incarceration of women is evident in jails where the majority of women incarcerated are mothers of young children (Sawyer & Bertram, 2022). The current paper explores mothering experiences of women in two Midwestern jails, …
Global Sounds: Uncovering Music From Popular Refugees As A Space For Counternarratives, Henrique Villela
Global Sounds: Uncovering Music From Popular Refugees As A Space For Counternarratives, Henrique Villela
Theses and Dissertations
As episodes of mass displacement become the subject of worldwide headlines, the news media discourse on refugees seems often to reduce the refugee experience to either depictions of helpless victims or threatening foreigners. However, dynamic media such as music can prove a useful avenue through which refugeeism may be creatively discussed in a new light. Utilizing a counternarrative lens, this thesis presents a textual analysis of music albums from K’naan, M.I.A., and Wyclef Jean, prominent refugee musicians who utilize global expressions of rap to address refugee experiences. Through both points of shared realities and individual perspectives, these artists engage in …
Omnipotence And The Psyche: On A New Psychoanalysis, Dani Park
Omnipotence And The Psyche: On A New Psychoanalysis, Dani Park
Theses and Dissertations
In the first chapter, I propose a new psychoanalytical framework in which the subject is driven by a need for omnipotence. Omnipotence, which is redefined in my framework, propels the subject to overcome the Father, or the awareness of self that arises due to psychological maturation and sophistication. I also introduce a psychological development that is defined by the entrance of the subject into different stages (Womb, Eden, Wandering), which are punctuated by events (In-the-Beginning, Fall, Death) which transition the subject into the next stage. Lastly, I introduce my own topographical model of the self in which the subject is …
These Blues Are Inspite Of You Mr. Charlie: Oral Histories Of Black Chicago Blues Musicians Discussing Matters Of Race, Andrew T. Thomas
These Blues Are Inspite Of You Mr. Charlie: Oral Histories Of Black Chicago Blues Musicians Discussing Matters Of Race, Andrew T. Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
My thesis explores the impact of race on Chicago Blues musicians from 1985 to 2012, a time when musicians began publically challenging the control of their music by white promoters. While there are a few scholarly works that discuss race and blues, none of them are written by a Black Chicago Blues musician. This thesis fills that void and provides further insight into race and marginalization through the experience of musicians captured in oral histories. Chicago-style Blues music is an African American art form that since its inception has been controlled and commodified chiefly by whites, who are gatekeepers. I …
Expression Of Rcrb Confers Resistance To Hypochlorous Acid In Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli, Mary Crompton
Expression Of Rcrb Confers Resistance To Hypochlorous Acid In Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli, Mary Crompton
Theses and Dissertations
Neutrophils are the most prominent cell of the human innate immune system. Upon infection by bacteria, neutrophils are recruited to the site of infection where they target bacteria for degradation by phagocytosis. Neutrophils are effective bacterial killers through a high production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive chlorine species (RCS), which kill ingested microbes through damage to nucleic acids, lipids, and proteins. To prevent succumbing to the lethal effects of oxidative stress, pathogens such as Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), the primary causative agent of urinary tract infections (UTIs), have developed defense systems to combat ROS/RCS. We recently identified the …
The Relationship Between Cardiac Load And Metabolic Changes Throughout A Collegiate Cross-Country Season, Jacob M. Gillum
The Relationship Between Cardiac Load And Metabolic Changes Throughout A Collegiate Cross-Country Season, Jacob M. Gillum
Theses and Dissertations
Overtraining is a widespread epidemic in collegiate cross-cross country which causes excessive fatigue and limits improvement in critical physiological measures such as maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max), ventilatory threshold (VT), and running economy (RE). Research has suggested that overtraining can be identified by monitoring daily and weekly cardiac load (CL) as well as changes in load over time measured by an acute to chronic cardio load ratio (A:C). Assessing the relationships between these foundational aerobic athlete variables and A:C will provide important information about fitness changes over the course of a competitive season as well as potential insight into the …
Shadows Of Colored Complexes And Cycle Decompositions Of Equipartite Hypergraphs, Genevieve Madden
Shadows Of Colored Complexes And Cycle Decompositions Of Equipartite Hypergraphs, Genevieve Madden
Theses and Dissertations
Let $K_{n\times m}^h$ be the complete $h$-uniform $n$-partite hypergraph with parts of size $m$. A cycle of length $c$ in a hypergraph is an alternating sequences of distinct vertices, $v_i$, and distinct edges $e_i$ of the form $v_1, e_1, v_2, e_2, \dots , e_c, v_c$ such that $v_i, v_{i+1}\subseteq e_i$ and $v_{c+1}=v_1$. By applying the shadows of colored complexes, we nearly settle the problem of partitioning the edges of $K_{n\times m}^h$ into cycles of length $c$ where $c$ is a multiple of $m$. This is joint work with Amin Bahmanian and Max Ward.
Burned Beauty: Stories Of How Black Women Burn Survivors Manage Their Trauma & Recovery, Bree Mccall
Burned Beauty: Stories Of How Black Women Burn Survivors Manage Their Trauma & Recovery, Bree Mccall
Theses and Dissertations
This study focuses on an under-researched segment of the burn-survivor community, Black-women burn survivors, who tend to go unrecognized beyond the initial observation of physical scarring or disfigurement. Recent data indicates that burn survivors of color, post-injury, report less satisfaction with their appearance and lower levels of community integration when compared to white burn survivors (Mata-Greve et al. 2022). Likewise, men burn survivors fare better than women during the post-injury recovery period when it comes to navigating romantic relationships, social interactions, and work and employment opportunities (Levi et al. 2018). This topic of burn survivors at the race-gender nexus is …
Memorable Health Messages And Their Influence On Health Behavior, Benjamin Brew Sam-Paintsil
Memorable Health Messages And Their Influence On Health Behavior, Benjamin Brew Sam-Paintsil
Theses and Dissertations
Students encounter a lot of the health messages they perceive to be relevant. Some of health messages may stick with them for a long period of time and may be easily recalled than others, thus becoming memorable messages to them. Yet, little is known about the content and the source of college students’ memorable health messages. Thus, this study explored the features, the impact, and sources of college students’ memorable health message and whether students view their sources as credible. In addition, the present study examined health issues that students deem as salient in their memorable messages. The study found …
