Deception In Game Theory: A Survey And Multiobjective Model, Austin L. Davis
Deception In Game Theory: A Survey And Multiobjective Model, Austin L. Davis
Theses and Dissertations
Game theory is the study of mathematical models of conflict. It provides tools for analyzing dynamic interactions between multiple agents and (in some cases) across multiple interactions. This thesis contains two scholarly articles. The first article is a survey of game-theoretic models of deception. The survey describes the ways researchers use game theory to measure the practicality of deception, model the mechanisms for performing deception, analyze the outcomes of deception, and respond to, or mitigate the effects of deception. The survey highlights several gaps in the literature. One important gap concerns the benefit-cost-risk trade-off made during deception planning. To address …
Effectiveness Based Design Of A Tactical Tanker Aircraft, Andrew K. Petry
Effectiveness Based Design Of A Tactical Tanker Aircraft, Andrew K. Petry
Theses and Dissertations
An approach to drive conceptual aircraft design using mission effectiveness parameters is described and applied to an operational scenario. The scenario includes traditional aircraft refueling tankers and a proposed tactical tanker concept supporting fighter aircraft conducting offensive (OCA) and defensive (DCA) counter air patrols. Traditional conceptual design methodologies were used to generate a baseline design for a tactical tanker aircraft, which was evaluated using a MATLAB-based model to investigate Measures of Effectiveness (MOE). The model holds the traditional tanker and fighter capabilities constant, while varying the tactical tanker's specific fuel consumption, lift-to-drag ratio, fuel payload, mass fraction, and proximity to …
Neutron Radiation Effects On Ge And Gesn Semiconductors, Christopher T. O'Daniel
Neutron Radiation Effects On Ge And Gesn Semiconductors, Christopher T. O'Daniel
Theses and Dissertations
Two different semiconductor materials received neutron radiation for assessment of radiation damage. The two materials are undoped bulk Ge and epitaxial Ge0.991Sn0.009, which is doped heavily with phosphorous. At room temperature, the Ge sample has direct and indirect bandgaps at 0.78 eV and 0.66 eV, respectively. The Ge0.991Sn0.009 sample has direct and indirect bandgaps at 0.72 eV and 0.63 eV, respectively. Two samples of each material were exposed to research reactor neutrons, delivering a 1 MeV equivalent neutron fluence of 2.52 × 1015 n/cm2. In order to assess the radiation …
A Simulation-Based Analysis Of Chemical And Radiological Hazard Zones Adapted To Physical Boundaries, Mickie J. Sundheim
A Simulation-Based Analysis Of Chemical And Radiological Hazard Zones Adapted To Physical Boundaries, Mickie J. Sundheim
Theses and Dissertations
In the United States, industrial and terrorist use of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) materials pose a risk to public safety. During the initial phase of typical CBRN incidents, emergency responders establish hazard zones based on standard distances from published guidelines and recommendations. This research investigates how standard hazard zones change in a real world environment that accounts for physical boundaries. Using a python simulation in ArcGIS®, new hazard zones were created by expanding standard hazard zones to follow nearby roads, railroads, and rivers. The new and standard zones were compared by calculating the population and area affected by …
Jamming Cognitive Radios, Travis J. Freeman
Jamming Cognitive Radios, Travis J. Freeman
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this thesis is to identify and evaluate weaknesses in the rendezvous process for Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) in the presence of a Cognitive Jammer (CJ). Jamming strategies are suggested and tested for effectiveness. Methods for safe- guarding the Cognitive Radios (CRs) against a CJ are also explored. A simulation is constructed to set up a scenario of two CRs interacting with a CJ. Analysis of the simulation is conducted primarily at the waveform level. A hardware setup is constructed to analyze the system in the physical layer, verify the interactions from the simulation, and test in a …

Superconducting Quantum Interference Device Array Based High Frequency Direction Finding On An Airborne Platform, Tyrel K. Kvasager
Superconducting Quantum Interference Device Array Based High Frequency Direction Finding On An Airborne Platform, Tyrel K. Kvasager
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis evaluates a new incredibly sensitive highly linear high dynamic range 2D Bi-SQUID array purposed by the dissertation written by Susan Berggren applied to use on an airborne platform for the purposes of HFDF. To evaluate how useful the 2D Bi-SQUID is we explore multiple signals of the same frequency in two different base sensor configurations: Non-uniform phased array and non-colocated Poynting's Theorem based vector sensors. The exploration is performed using the SPIRIT HPC system to calculate the 2D Bi-SQUID output given multiple incident signals. The AoA estimation calculation is performed using the MUSIC algorithm on the signals received …
Real-Time Implementation Of Vision-Aided Monocular Navigation For Small Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aerial Systems, Timothy I. Machin
Real-Time Implementation Of Vision-Aided Monocular Navigation For Small Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aerial Systems, Timothy I. Machin
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this project was to develop and implement algorithms to demonstrate real-time positioning of a UAV using a monocular camera combined with previously collected orthorectified imagery. Unlike previous tests, this project did not utilize a full inertial navigation system (INS) for attitude, but instead had to rely on the attitude obtained by inexpensive commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) autopilots. The system consisted of primarily COTS components and open-source software, and was own over Camp Atterbury, IN for a sequence of flight tests in Fall 2015. The system obtained valid solutions over much of the flight path, identifying features in the …
Interference Suppression Using Knowledge-Aided Subarray Pattern Synthesis, David A. New
Interference Suppression Using Knowledge-Aided Subarray Pattern Synthesis, David A. New
Theses and Dissertations
Most phased array systems subarray many antenna elements into far fewer digitized channels. While having more degrees of freedom (DOF) yields better performance, adding channels to create more digital DOF increases system cost and data throughput requirements. A subarray itself constitutes a phased array with as many DOF as it has antenna element weights. Typically, only one degree of freedom is used to steer the maximum gain direction of the subarray pattern. For typical antenna geometries a single subarray will provide many more spatial DOF than there are digitized channels. The inherent DOF of the subarrays could be used to …
Multihop Rendezvous Algorithm For Frequency Hopping Cognitive Radio Networks, John A. Pavlik
Multihop Rendezvous Algorithm For Frequency Hopping Cognitive Radio Networks, John A. Pavlik
Theses and Dissertations
Cognitive radios allow the possibility of increasing utilization of the wireless spectrum, but because of their dynamic access nature require new techniques for establishing and joining networks, these are known as rendezvous. Existing rendezvous algorithms assume that rendezvous can be completed in a single round or hop of time. However, cognitive radio networks utilizing frequency hopping that is too fast for synchronization packets to be exchanged in a single hop require a rendezvous algorithm that supports multiple hop rendezvous. We propose the Multiple Hop (MH) rendezvous algorithm based on a pre-shared sequence of random numbers, bounded timing differences, and similar …
Position And Volume Estimation Of Atmospheric Nuclear Detonations From Video Reconstruction, Daniel T. Schmitt
Position And Volume Estimation Of Atmospheric Nuclear Detonations From Video Reconstruction, Daniel T. Schmitt
Theses and Dissertations
Recent work in digitizing films of foundational atmospheric nuclear detonations from the 1950s provides an opportunity to perform deeper analysis on these historical tests. This work leverages multi-view geometry and computer vision techniques to provide an automated means to perform three-dimensional analysis of the blasts for several points in time. The accomplishment of this requires careful alignment of the films in time, detection of features in the images, matching of features, and multi-view reconstruction. Sub-explosion features can be detected with a 67% hit rate and 22% false alarm rate. Hotspot features can be detected with a 71.95% hit rate, 86.03% …
Logistics Simulation For Long Duration Logistics Wargames, Kevin R. Cardenas
Logistics Simulation For Long Duration Logistics Wargames, Kevin R. Cardenas
Theses and Dissertations
Wargames were originally created to test wartime strategies against opposing forces within a short time frame. Due to the short duration design of these wargames, logistics were deemed irrelevant and it was incorrectly assumed that the warfighter would be logistically supported for the entire duration of the wargame. The purpose of this thesis is to provide insight to the value of capturing logistics within a wargame and to better model the increased requirement for Agile Combat Support. This research utilizes a logistics simulation tool and its outputs to conduct statistical analyses comparing a baseline scenario created to mirror the Joint …
United States Air Force Officer Manpower Planning Problem Via Approximate Dynamic Programming, Amelia E. Bradshaw
United States Air Force Officer Manpower Planning Problem Via Approximate Dynamic Programming, Amelia E. Bradshaw
Theses and Dissertations
The United States Air Force (USAF) is concerned with managing its officer corps to ensure sufficient personnel for mission readiness. Manpower planning for the USAF is a complex process which requires making decisions about accessions. Uncertainty about officer retention complicates such decisions. We formulate a Markov decision process model of the Air Force officer manpower planning problem (AFO-MPP) and utilize a least squares approximate policy iteration algorithm as an approximate dynamic programming (ADP) technique to attain solutions. Computational experiments are conducted on two AFO-MPP instances to compare the performance of the policy determined with the ADP algorithm to a benchmark …
Writing Resistance: Agency And Politics In The Postmodern And Contemporary Novel, Bradley Michael Poling
Writing Resistance: Agency And Politics In The Postmodern And Contemporary Novel, Bradley Michael Poling
Theses and Dissertations
This project seeks to substantiate a key ambivalence at the heart of contemporary literature: what does it mean to "return" to politics? Critics of contemporary literature have outlined the new literary aesthetic, using social and political engagement as a key component in distinguishing the contemporary novel from its postmodern predecessor. This project, in response to this claim, will examine both the discursive and representation politics of two landmark postmodern novels, Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow and Don DeLillo's Libra, while examining Jennifer Eganâ??s A Visit from the Goon Squad as a descendent of this literary lineage. This project argues that the …
Understanding Effects Of Autonomous Agent Timing On Human-Agent Teams Using Iterative Modeling, Simulation And Human-In-The-Loop Experimentation, Tyler J. Goodman
Understanding Effects Of Autonomous Agent Timing On Human-Agent Teams Using Iterative Modeling, Simulation And Human-In-The-Loop Experimentation, Tyler J. Goodman
Theses and Dissertations
Recent U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory strategy documents have suggested the need for research in human-agent teaming. Teaming supports a dynamic shift in roles between the human and the agent, depending upon human performance and mission needs. Further, because the performance of these agents will be highly dependent upon the state of the human and the mission, this strategy suggests the need for increased use of modeling to provide a broader understanding of the automated agent’s behavior. This thesis applies a combination of static modeling in SysML activity diagrams, dynamic modeling of human and agent behavior in IMPRINT, and human …

Rap Lyrics, Music Videos, And Themes Of Sex, Violence, And Prosocial Behavior, Terrell L. Green
Theses and Dissertations
Socially and academically, rap music has been linked to more negative symbolism than positive. This study examined sexual, violent, and prosocial text embedded in rap lyrics and videos, using semiology in the form of connotation and denotation. This study is a textual analysis of twenty-six of the most popular, chart-topping rap music videos from 1995 to 2015. It involved conducting four levels of analysis to code the music videos to determine the presence of sex, violence, and prosocial text. Prosocial text was found to be the most disseminated theme in the rap lyrics and music videos studied. Violence was second. …
Military Contractors And International Law, Ali Deif
Military Contractors And International Law, Ali Deif
Theses and Dissertations
In the modern world, regulation is a necessity, especially on an international scale. PMSCs or Private Military Security Contractors are groups that are involved with militaries, and in conflict zones around the world. Due to their unique functions and place in international law, they essentially fall into a regulatory gap. PMSCs are non- state actors , but perform a series of roles and functions historically associated with the state. They can be used in multitudes of situations and have even been recruited in the war against drugs. Some see military contractors as, or similar to mercenaries, while others disagree. Many, …
In Search Of Granby: A Colonial Village Of South Carolina, Kathryn F. Keenan
In Search Of Granby: A Colonial Village Of South Carolina, Kathryn F. Keenan
Theses and Dissertations
Granby was a thriving village in the middle of South Carolina from 1760-1830. Most histories of the Midlands of South Carolina generally begin with the establishment of the state capital Columbia in 1786 with some mention of Native Americans and backcountry settlers before that, but do not mention Granby. The reason it has been overlooked are twofold. When Columbia was built across the Congaree River from Granby, merchants and residents moved to the new city. As Granby fell into decline, most of its buildings collapsed or were moved and Granby ceased to exist as a town. Also, most of the …
If She Isn’T Working Miracles, What Is She Doing On The Battlefield?, Alex Matzke
If She Isn’T Working Miracles, What Is She Doing On The Battlefield?, Alex Matzke
Theses and Dissertations
The images included in my thesis work reflect my experience growing up with military propaganda—pictures of cheerful white women in pearls as part of my rural middle American landscape. I do not name the oppressor because I am not here to pick at the thorns, but to get to the root of the oppression. These are some of the servicewomen I’ve met. Their stories parallel but cannot encompass the private experiences of all service women. I am grateful for their generosity; without them there would be no pictures.
The battle for equality is much older than Rosie the Riveter but …

The Effect Of Different Written Task Instructions On Students’ Scores In A Physical And Virtual Environment, Ademola Amida
Theses and Dissertations
Electronic laboratory activities offer opportunities to help students learn about concepts and develop practical competencies in electronic circuit systems. Evidence in the literature suggests that the effectiveness of laboratory activities might be affected by the type of instructions provided (explicit or implicit), and the lab environment (physical or virtual) in which the activities were performed.
This study investigated the effect of different written task instructions (explicit versus implicit) and lab environment (physical versus virtual) on students’ scores in an electronic circuit task. This study was a quantitative experiment that used a repeated measure factorial design to determine how the written …
Simulation Of Gan Based Mis Varactor, Bojidha Babu
Simulation Of Gan Based Mis Varactor, Bojidha Babu
Theses and Dissertations
This work deals with novel microwave switches based on III-Nitride varactors. RF switches, power limiters and other control devices are important components of various RF systems, such as wireless modules of laptops, tablets, cell phones etc., satellites communication systems, radars, multi-band wireless and aerospace communications, phased array antennas and so worth. Traditional RF switches are fabricated using pin diodes or MEMS, Si MOSFETs or GaAs HEMTs. These devices have a number of fundamental limitations. Si or GaAs based devices suffer from a low breakdown voltage and cannot handle high RF power. Pin-diodes require large forward currents and do not allow …
Leaders In Search Of The Bomb: Institutional Incentives For Nuclear Decisions, Paige Price Cone
Leaders In Search Of The Bomb: Institutional Incentives For Nuclear Decisions, Paige Price Cone
Theses and Dissertations
Nuclear weapons hold a strong allure for many leaders. These weapons are more than tools of national security; rather, they represent international normative symbols of modernity and national identity. This symbolic power presents a strong incentive to proliferate. However, beginning a nuclear weapons program (“proliferating”) is a costly endeavor, one that requires a significant amount of resources and time. A leader who chooses to proliferate must balance the preferences of his or her domestic audience with the significant resources required to proliferate in an international system that opposes nuclear proliferation to new states. In order to understand the paradox of …
Education Through Violence In Modern American Literature, Adam Griffey
Education Through Violence In Modern American Literature, Adam Griffey
Theses and Dissertations
“Education through Violence in Modern American Literature” examines how violence is employed as a pedagogical tool in overseeing the transition of young people into adulthood in twentieth and twenty-first century American literature. Examining texts by Robert Cormier, John Knowles, Suzanne Collins, Orson Scott Card, Flannery O’Connor, James Baldwin, and Cormac McCarthy, this study demonstrates that a pedagogy of violence may be used as a coercive method to further the goals of the powerful, but it is equally interested in the ways that young people are able to rebel against structural systems of power that demand conformity and adherence to social, …
A Call To Every Citizen: The South Carolina State Council Of Defense And World War I, Allison Baker
A Call To Every Citizen: The South Carolina State Council Of Defense And World War I, Allison Baker
Theses and Dissertations
The South Carolina State Council of Defense (SCSCD), under the auspices of the Council of National Defense (CND), worked to convince citizens to voluntarily change their daily habits in the name of the World War I home front effort. The CND developed programs designed to get people to eat less of specific foods, cut back on unnecessary spending, and to participate in war bond drives like the liberty loans. The SCSCD brought the national programs to the local level. This project also demonstrates the strained relationship between the SCSCD and its auxiliary organizations, the Woman’s Committee and the Colored Branch. …
Colonialism Unraveling: Race, Religion, And National Belonging In Santo Domingo During The Age Of Revolutions, Charlton W. Yingling
Colonialism Unraveling: Race, Religion, And National Belonging In Santo Domingo During The Age Of Revolutions, Charlton W. Yingling
Theses and Dissertations
Santo Domingo, the first European colony in the Americas, was the original thread at the edge of an expansively woven Spanish imperial tapestry. From 1784-1822 this hem frayed, threatening to unbind the most basic stitches that tied Caribbean colonies to Spanish imperial power. My dissertation analyzes colonial Santo Domingo's cultural, racial, political trajectories amidst influences of the Haitian and French revolutions, Spanish reaction, African Diaspora, and Latin American independence movements. A uniquely Dominican cultural politics of race and nation were born at the intersections of these social and cultural forces, unraveled colonialism, and set terms of engagement with their Haitian …
The Virtue Of Truthfulness And The Military Profession: Reconciling Honesty With The Requirement To Deceive During War, John W. Bauer
The Virtue Of Truthfulness And The Military Profession: Reconciling Honesty With The Requirement To Deceive During War, John W. Bauer
Theses and Dissertations
The U.S. military regards truthfulness as a virtue, a quality captured in the terms ‘honor’ and ‘integrity.’ At the same time, military doctrine does little to hide the fact that military operations should endeavor to deceive the enemy. How can these two ideas, seemingly in conflict with each other, be reconciled? This dissertation examines the viability of the absolutist claim implicit in the term ‘truthfulness’ – namely, that to be truth-full, one must never lie, even to one’s enemies. In order for this absolute prohibition to be consistent with certain instances of allowable deception, lying and truthfulness, I argue, must …
From Seed To Sky: Impacts Of Explosive Compounds On Vegetation Across Spatial And Developmental Scales, Stephen M. Via
From Seed To Sky: Impacts Of Explosive Compounds On Vegetation Across Spatial And Developmental Scales, Stephen M. Via
Theses and Dissertations
Explosive compounds are broadly distributed across the globe as a result of nearly two centuries of munitions use in warfare and military activities. Two explosive compounds have seen disproportionate use; RDX (hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine) and TNT (2-methyl- 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene), being the most commonly found explosives in the environment. The effects of explosives on biota have been studied in great detail; however, there is a general lack of understanding with regard to broader ecological impacts of these contaminants. My dissertation objective was to follow the impacts of explosive compounds on vegetation across scales. Impacts on vegetation at the species scale alter community composition via …
Business And Security In The Age Of Terrorism: The Long-Term Effects Of The September 11 Terrorist Attacks On Seaport Governance And Control, Daniel J. Ostergaard
Business And Security In The Age Of Terrorism: The Long-Term Effects Of The September 11 Terrorist Attacks On Seaport Governance And Control, Daniel J. Ostergaard
Theses and Dissertations
The primary research goal of this dissertation is to improve our theoretical understanding of the longterm effects of major transnational terrorist events on securityrelated institutional changes for business. To accomplish this goal, the September, 11, 2001, terror attack was chosen as the starting point for this research. The research context is the governance of seaport security. Using grounded theory to develop comparative case studies of several major security initiatives in the maritime industry after 9/11, this dissertation shows that a terrorist event initiates a process of institutional change that emerges over time as initial securityrelated ideas cascade into concrete actions. …
The Development Of A Miniature Spatial Heterodyne Raman Spectrometer For Applications In Planetary Exploration And Other Extreme Environments, Patrick Doyle Barnett
The Development Of A Miniature Spatial Heterodyne Raman Spectrometer For Applications In Planetary Exploration And Other Extreme Environments, Patrick Doyle Barnett
Theses and Dissertations
Space exploration is arguably one of the most important endeavors our species has ever undertaken. Rapid advances in rocketry and robotics in recent years has allowed for positioning of complex scientific instruments on other planets with a precision that was previously thought impossible. This, along with the need for more sophisticated chemical measurements to achieve the goals of new, more ambitious missions and recent advances in in-situ and remote spectroscopic techniques, has led to a boom in the use of spectroscopic instruments for space exploration. However, future missions to the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, along with other planetary bodies …
A Culture Of Commodification: Hemispheric And Intercolonial Migrations In The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, 1660-1807, Neal D. Polhemus
A Culture Of Commodification: Hemispheric And Intercolonial Migrations In The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, 1660-1807, Neal D. Polhemus
Theses and Dissertations
Beginning in the sixteenth century, as large quantities of produce were unloaded at ports throughout Northern Europe, consumer consumption of West Indies commodities drove demand for captive African labor. As a result, from 1556 to 1867, Europeans transported some 12 million West Africans to the Americas. Based on primary sources from over three countries and more than thirty archives, this study explores the structure and organization of the transatlantic slave trade to analyze the transformation of relationships and the commercial operation of the trade in West Africa, the circum-Caribbean, and more broadly the Atlantic world. This study of the transatlantic …
