Live Art: A Positive Change In This World, Phillip Vollmer
Theses and Dissertations
LIVE ART is a program for students with special needs and students who are typically developed. They work collaboratively, with integrated forms of performance and visual art, culminating in a live performance. LIVE ART sought to use innovative methods of pedagogy, peer support and artistic influence to create a new curriculum where all students, regardless of ability, could grow. Along with this account, this thesis illustrates the experience of one teaching artist and his growth and journey through the program. His personal struggles with previous educational systems are mirrored in the struggles of the students, with their successes leading to …
Decoding Acting Vocabulary, Daniel Granke
Decoding Acting Vocabulary, Daniel Granke
Theses and Dissertations
This paper compares seemingly similar words from a variety of acting teachers, and shows how it is impossible to draw clear comparisons between words that are often used as synonyms. The paper is a reflection of the journey from believing in translation to recognizing its impossibility. In Chapter 1 we focus on one of the most common elements in actor training, Attention/focus/concentration, and analyze the shades of meaning in those words and the difficulty of talking about them in isolation. In Chapter 2 we look at the way in which semiotic analysis can explain the words resistance to equivalence. In …
The Mysteries Of Breath: What Do We Need And How Do We Teach It?, Rachel Hillmer
The Mysteries Of Breath: What Do We Need And How Do We Teach It?, Rachel Hillmer
Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this paper is to explore the philosophies, attitudes and beliefs that surround the teaching of breath. Voice and speech teachers want students and actors to be versatile; able to adjust to the demands of any role, and each student enters the classroom with a myriad of mental and physical breathing habits. Many voice and speech trainers, however, only address a limited number of breathing habits and primarily teach "deep breathing." Why has deep breathing dominated voice training, and how do we effectively teach breath for all students and all habits? I will examine six major voice practitioners: …
The House To House: A Study Of Creating Public Space Within A New Museum Model, Caroline Eddy
The House To House: A Study Of Creating Public Space Within A New Museum Model, Caroline Eddy
Theses and Dissertations
By integrating the gallery model within the museum model, a new hybrid model is allowed to take form which works to establish the legacy of heritage of a place and provides the muse for artists working today. Through the application of 3rd Space theory to this new hybrid model, the place in question can become integral to the activities of the people of the community and its visitors, providing sustainable support and community involvement to the non-profit model. The Old City Market is an icon to historic Petersburg. As a museum, the building will serve the community as a place …
Anish Kapoor: The Formation Of A Global Art, Owen Duffy
Anish Kapoor: The Formation Of A Global Art, Owen Duffy
Theses and Dissertations
This study intends to investigate British artist Anish Kapoor’s stylistic formation in relationship to globalization, positing its history as a multiplicity, comprised of several competing localisms, including: minimalism; the traditions of modern painting; and the artist’s own personal diasporic narrative. It will demonstrate how Kapoor is a transgressive global artist, concerned not only with rethinking the longstanding question of artistic form, but also with the enduring process central to the cultural formation of subjects. Overall, this thesis will propose that Kapoor’s art in particular can be comprehended by the special liminal position it occupies between such polarities as modern and …
Singing For The Actor: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Musical Theatre Training, Valerie Accetta
Singing For The Actor: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Musical Theatre Training, Valerie Accetta
Theses and Dissertations
Typically, singing training for the musical theatre student is divided into three subjects: music theory, private voice instruction and acting through song. By separating the study of the components of musical theatre performance, musical theatre programs reinforce this compartmentalization and few students are able to make connections between these components in performance. This thesis gives an account of my design of an interdisciplinary approach to the study of musical theatre, specifically a class I developed called Singing for the Actor. In this class, I focused on connecting three components of musical theatre singing: music theory, vocal production (specifically the Estill …
Theatre Triad: An Approach To Devising Collaborative Ensemble Theatre, Keith G. Fitzgerald
Theatre Triad: An Approach To Devising Collaborative Ensemble Theatre, Keith G. Fitzgerald
Theses and Dissertations
Theatre Triad is a new approach to devising collaborative ensemble theatre starting with the three main components of Performance: Voice, Movement, and Text. These components were deconstructed and reconstructed in pairs as the basis for the devising process. The performance process begins with creating an ensemble followed by four steps: exploring the theatrical genres affiliated with the pairings of Voice and Movement, Movement and Text, Voice and Text, and completed with reintegrating all three components. Through this process many things occur, a new play is created, ensemble members focus on exploring the elements of acting and performance, and a strong …
Fem And Funny: Three Women Who Changed The Face Of Stand-Up Comedy, Rachel Eliza Blackburn
Fem And Funny: Three Women Who Changed The Face Of Stand-Up Comedy, Rachel Eliza Blackburn
Theses and Dissertations
Phyllis Diller, Joan Rivers, and Lisa Lampanelli as performers demonstrate an arc of evolving female empowerment in the world of stand-up comedy. In this thesis I shall study the development of each woman’s career by examining her material, progression of her comic persona, and relationship to women’s gender roles, both personally and professionally. While there are many other female comics who contribute to the story of women’s stand-up comedy in the contemporary period (in particular, Moms Mabley and Elayne Boosler), Diller, Rivers and Lampanelli each represent a distinct shift in how their persona combined with subject matter, allowing women to …
Ten Cultural Perspective Units For Entry-Level French Classrooms, Nancy Elizabeth Sendejo
Ten Cultural Perspective Units For Entry-Level French Classrooms, Nancy Elizabeth Sendejo
Theses and Dissertations
Acquiring a second language necessitates an understanding both of linguistic structure and cultural identity. Foreign language programs have historically focused on language as content with culture as supporting information. This thesis offers a unique approach to enabling elementary French language learners to acquire an understanding of the French people through a focused study of the products, practices, and perspectives of their culture framed in the context of an overarching essential question. As students work to gain an integrated perspective of what daily life is like, the author hopes to encourage a longer study of French and better cross-cultural understanding. Files …
Coal, Cotton, & Lynching: Labor And Art In Arkansas, Sarita N. Riley
Coal, Cotton, & Lynching: Labor And Art In Arkansas, Sarita N. Riley
Theses and Dissertations
The 1930s was a decade of change throughout America. The Great Depression affected all citizens. Joblessness spread like a plague, affecting rich and poor alike. The nation turned to federally funded work programs for its very survival. The Works Progress Administration (WPA) kept Americans working. Many projects centered on building infrastructure, but artists, writers, and historians also created culturally relevant projects to inspire and entertain the masses. The WPA spawned a movement of left leaning individuals who used art to create works protesting the ills of society. Common themes included joblessness, homelessness, and lynching in America. Joe Jones, a St. …
Traumatic Brain Injury Recovery Care: Demand Forecasting, Staffing, And Treatment Planning, Mitchell R. Kieffer
Traumatic Brain Injury Recovery Care: Demand Forecasting, Staffing, And Treatment Planning, Mitchell R. Kieffer
Theses and Dissertations
Improvised Explosive Device attacks have skyrocketed since the start of the War on Terror. Many troops wounded by these tactics receive long-lasting unseen wounds including Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). TBI sufferers are treated along with other casualties. This has created an increasing, and varying, demand for ongoing post operative recovery care for troops returning from deployments. Diagnosis and treatment for TBI wounded troops is costly. This thesis is motivated by the recognition that budgets are constrained yet quality of care should not be compromised. Additive Holtz-Winters smoothing is used to forecast overall patient care demand, a regression based on queueing …

Playdate With Little Rock, Emily Ann Ryan
Theses and Dissertations
Moms will find it invaluable to have a guide book for playdate locations that goes beyond a mere description of a place and delves right into such issues as: Should I bring a snack for my child? Where should I park? When should I get there to avoid crowds? Can I bring a stroller? These are the issues that mothers with young children really care about when it comes to trying out new locations for playdates. The purpose of Playdate with Little Rock is to give moms with young children a resource that they can count on. It is a …
An Empirical Study On The Effects Of Music And Sound Effects In Fiction E-Books, Alissa Eugenia Strong
An Empirical Study On The Effects Of Music And Sound Effects In Fiction E-Books, Alissa Eugenia Strong
Theses and Dissertations
Research indicates that music has a unique and powerful ability to affect how listeners react to a story (Schaefer, 1998). Publishing houses are increasingly incorporating music and other multimedia effects into their products, with companies such as Booktrack now including novel-length soundtracks with e-books. The present study aimed to empirically investigate the relationship between music and text by examining whether readers' enjoyment of and distraction from a fiction e-book is affected by the inclusion of music or sound effects. One hundred and twenty undergraduate students at Brigham Young University completed an e-book reading task (either accompanied by sound effects, music, …
"Sealing Their Two Fates With A Fracture": Ted Hughes's "Pyramus And Thisbe" As An Emblem Of The Paradox Of Translation, Carolyn Carter
"Sealing Their Two Fates With A Fracture": Ted Hughes's "Pyramus And Thisbe" As An Emblem Of The Paradox Of Translation, Carolyn Carter
Theses and Dissertations
This work explores how the 20th century English poet Ted Hughes translates one episode from Ovid's Metamorphoses (the "Pyramus and Thisbe" myth included in Hughes's Tales from Ovid) to make it an emblem for his notions about translation. In translating "Pyramus and Thisbe," Hughes removed many of the formal Ovidian elements and amplified the themes of violence and mingling latent in the myth. In doing so, he highlights the concept that communication sometimes necessitates breaking, symbolized primarily by the chink in the wall through which Pyramus and Thisbe whisper to one another. This metaphor for translation corroborates Hughes's discursive …
The Commercial & Artistic Viability Of The Fringe Movement, Charles Garrison
The Commercial & Artistic Viability Of The Fringe Movement, Charles Garrison
Theses and Dissertations
This investigation compares and contrasts an established theatrical festival (The Edinburgh Fringe Festival) with two relatively new American festivals (The Cincinnati Fringe Festival and The New York City Fringe Festival) to determine the commercial and artistic viability of those particular fringe festivals and any commonality with the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Each festival displayed four primary struggles on the ongoing path towards commercial and artistic viability: the involvement and development of locally-developed, internal theatre companies versus the invitation and involvement of external theatrical companies from other cities; the decisions determining if and how productions are selected or filtered for the festivals; …

The Music Of James Reese Europe For Vernon And Irene Castle, Ralph G. Barrett
Theses and Dissertations
James Reese Europe (1881-1919) was one of the leading African American musicians of the first two decades of the twentieth century. He was renowned as a conductor of theater and dance orchestras, a composer of syncopated dance music and popular song, and an advocate for improved opportunities and remuneration for African American professional musicians in New York. From late 1913 until mid-1915, Europe was musical director for the popular exhibition dance team of Vernon (1887-1918) and Irene (1893-1969) Castle. Jesse Lynch Williams and Edna St. Vincent Millay capture the identifying factors of what a Femme Fatale is and should be. This paper will explore the differences and similarities in the images of the Femme Fatale and New Woman, and discuss how those differences are related to origins of the image of the New Woman.
The Meaning And Purpose Of Quotation And Stylistic Reference In Hans Werner Henze's Requiem: Nine Sacred Concertos For Piano Solo, Trumpet Concertante, And Large Chamber Orchestra (1990-92), Daniel C. Pappas
Theses and Dissertations
Quotation and stylistic reference are important communicative devices in the musical language of Hans Werner Henze that serve as a means of expression in his multilayered approach to composition. This study examines the central role that quotation and reference play in Hans Werner Henze's Requiem: Nine Sacred Concertos for piano solo, trumpet concertante, and large chamber orchestra (1990-92). While some studies have identified selected references, their primary focus has been on the work's pitch organization and formal plan. This study instead considers Henze's unique approach to quotation and reference. In addition to interviews with the composer, Henze's own writings are …

Chamber Music In Alternative Venues In The 21st Century U.S.: Investigating The Effect Of New Venues On Concert Culture, Programming And The Business Of Classical Music, Sarah May Robinson
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates chamber music performances outside of traditional concert venues in the 21st-century U.S. The literature review traces the use of non-traditional venues throughout history from Bach's coffee house concerts to the gallery and loft concerts, which first emerged in the 1950s and 60s. The literature review will also look at the business of classical music established in the 20th century.
The study explores whether new venues have changed the landscape of classical music by interviewing players and concert promoters who present concerts in non-traditional venues as well as owners of popular music venues, which host classical music. Using …
Interviews On Main, Amanda Rose Forstrom
Interviews On Main, Amanda Rose Forstrom
Theses and Dissertations
Interviews On Main is the script of a one woman performance piece. It was conceived as an exploration and process of how to develop and write a working script, and later, see the piece come to fruition by producing, acting, and directing it. This solo show process has allowed me to delve into discovering my personal aesthetic in order to make a strong, individual artistic statement. Additionally, this process has helped me to learn how to be a solo creative artist, and to have cultivated individual material to perform when I am not cast professionally.
This thesis includes a table …

Moonbird, Samuel Kinsman
Moonbird, Samuel Kinsman
Theses and Dissertations
Love is a formless entity. Transformative and elusive, it can wreak havoc in one's life if misplaced. Unrequited love has potential toxicity, rage can stem from the most loving of places, and countless crimes of passion are committed every year.
However, in its base nature, love is formative. It has the potential to bring two separate energies together, the ensuing combination is what people dream of. The chemical process of love, the intellectual understanding of attraction and the visceral pit-in-stomach when one looks across the room at their lover are all worth exploring, especially in the theater.
In this piece …

Without A Net: Creating A One-Man Show, Joseph Timothy Mallon
Theses and Dissertations
During the Spring of 2011, I wrote and performed a one-man show entitled Hamlet and Pancakes, which was inspired by my Irish grandfather who used to cook pancakes for me while reading Shakespeare aloud. This sparked my love of all things theatre, food, and performance. This thesis contains the full script of that one-man show and it serves as an overview of the creative process that led to the show's development and evolution. What began as a seemingly daunting assignment quickly became one of the more enjoyable endeavors of my life as an actor. The show seemed to write itself …

Major Adjustment: Students' Transition Experiences Leaving Selective Undergraduate Degree Programs, Helen Mulhern Halasz
Theses and Dissertations
This multi-campus, qualitative study investigated how undergraduate students previously enrolled in selective majors described coping resources utilized during the transition of leaving their previous major and selecting a new academic degree program. The study also examined which resources students identified as most valuable, and coping resources most influential in their retention decisions. Research about students in selective degree programs has been absent for the last 20 years, and previous research studies have not given voice to the experiences of students in transition between majors. The conceptual underpinning of this study was the 4 S System (Goodman, Schlossberg, and Anderson, 2006), …
Students' Development And Use Of Internal Representations When Solving Algebraic Tasks, Laban J. Cross
Students' Development And Use Of Internal Representations When Solving Algebraic Tasks, Laban J. Cross
Theses and Dissertations
The difficulty in observing, recording, and examining internal representations has been well documented (Goldin & Shteingold, 2001). However, the important role that these internal representations play in the learning and understanding of mathematical concepts has been noted (Yackel, 2000). This study sought to develop a framework for examining the internalization patterns of school-aged children, gain a deeper understanding of how these internal representations are developed and used, and search for internalization patterns associated with successful generalizations.
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six sixth-grade students and six tenth-grade students. During these interviews the students were asked to solve a series of …

Transforming Narratives, Lucia Weilein
Transforming Narratives, Lucia Weilein
Theses and Dissertations
Narrative, often considered synonymous with “story,” can be viewed from a structuralist perspective and analyzed independent of any particular content. Breaking narrative into categories of story and discourse, this autonomous structure makes possible a translation of content from one form to another. The various media and form types common in graphic design can serve as both recipient and translator of narratives, converting content into a framework that includes the concept of craftsmanship, aesthetic components and specifications, legibility and composition, and the physical form of the designed object. To examine how this framework functions in practice, I have developed a series …
