Examination Of Metacognitive Strategies As An Intervention Supporting College Readiness For Students In Large Enrollment Introductory Biology Courses, Angela S. Mohrman
Examination Of Metacognitive Strategies As An Intervention Supporting College Readiness For Students In Large Enrollment Introductory Biology Courses, Angela S. Mohrman
Theses and Dissertations
Students who meet traditional definitions of college readiness based on prior coursework, grades, and standardized test scores often continue to struggle in large-enrollment introductory STEM courses. These struggles are particularly evident in introductory biology, where high cognitive demands, rapid pacing, and content volume require learners to regulate their own studying in ways many students have never been taught. This action research study examined whether sustained, explicit instruction in metacognitive regulation—planning, monitoring, and evaluating learning—could support introductory biology students’ college readiness and learning of biology content.
Using a mixed-methods action research design, the study investigated a 15-week co-curricular metacognitive intervention taken …
Evidence Of Metal-Microcystin Complexation And Its Potential Role In Environmental Fate, Ashley Marie Womer
Evidence Of Metal-Microcystin Complexation And Its Potential Role In Environmental Fate, Ashley Marie Womer
Theses and Dissertations
Microcystins that enter freshwater systems pose a threat to human health therefore their fate and transport throughout the water column have been intensively studied. While sediment has been regarded as an environmental fate for microcystin (MC), less is known about the molecular mechanisms by which microcystin interacts with the sediment and/or the thermodynamic stability of these interactions. While microcystin has a half-life in lake water on the order of weeks, microcystin adsorbed to sediment can be detected hundreds of years later1-2. Microcystin has been desorbed from these sediments with various EDTA solutions, therefore, work is presented to support the hypothesis …

Coastal regions have historically been integral to geographic research given the complex interactions among physical processes, ecological systems, human activities, and socio-economic dynamics. As global populations in low-elevation coastal zones increase, understanding the coupled human-natural dynamics becomes essential for effective hazard mitigation. This dissertation presents an analytical framework that combines high-resolution remote sensing, image classification, landscape metrics, and geomorphometry to characterize the composition, configuration, and morphodynamic trajectories of coastal systems. The research investigates multi-scale dynamics in managed and unmanaged coastal environments by integrating diverse data sources to analyze spatial and temporal variability. The framework is implemented through three distinct research …
How And Why The Novel Personate Morphology Evolved In Penstemon Wildflowers, Trinity Hope Depatie
How And Why The Novel Personate Morphology Evolved In Penstemon Wildflowers, Trinity Hope Depatie
Theses and Dissertations
Adaptive radiations are characterized by the rapid evolution of novel traits making them excellent study systems to identify the genetic basis of adaptation. Floral adaptations often evolve rapidly as they are shaped by the strong selective pressures imposed by pollinators. The wildflower genus Penstemon is a recent radiation displaying a large amount of floral diversity including the repeated evolution of several floral traits. One novel floral trait displayed in Penstemon flowers is the personate morphology. Personate flowers are characterized by an upward bulge in the lower lobe of the corolla tube which seals off the floral passageway. This peculiar floral …

Vocabulary Learning In High School Chemistry To Enhance Conceptual Understanding: An Action Research Case Study, David Thibodeau
Theses and Dissertations
Accurate application of the domain-specific language of chemistry is often a challenge for students. To address this problem of practice, an action research intervention was implemented in a suburban high school chemistry classroom. Integrated with the predict-observe-explain instructional sequence, students participated in a targeted vocabulary intervention designed to ground abstract chemistry terms in concrete laboratory-based learning experiences. In concretizing abstract terms, students had more access to challenging chemistry vocabulary, consistent with the principles of the dual coding theory of cognition. The study’s findings suggest growth in students’ conceptual understanding of chemistry topics and ability to accurately articulate explanations of chemistry …
The Use Of Machine-Learning Interatomic Potentials To Study Bulk Properties Of Aqueous Zn Ion Batteries, Ria Vasdev
The Use Of Machine-Learning Interatomic Potentials To Study Bulk Properties Of Aqueous Zn Ion Batteries, Ria Vasdev
Theses and Dissertations
Aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs) have emerged as a promising energy storage tech- nology owing to their high Coulombic efciency and low environmental impact. However, their practical development is impeded by limited cycling stability, pri- marily caused by parasitic side reactions occurring at the anode surface. These side reactions are strongly infuenced by the bulk solvation structure of Zn-based elec- trolytes, which remains challenging to characterize using conventional experimental techniques. Machine-learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) provide a powerful computational approach to investigate these systems and can be employed to eluci- date the bulk structural properties of Zn electrolytes.

Centralized Heat Messaging: Investigating The Forecasting And Communication Of Heat Risks, Madison Sydney Nordberg
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding of heat and its impacts has become essential to everyday life as heat continues to cause illness and fatalities across the United States, and around the globe. Defining extreme heat presents massive challenges, meaning different organizations, institutions, and researchers approach heat events differently, which is unlike any other hazard. Finding ways to get on the same page about heat’s impact on our communities is complex but necessary. Following insights and experiences gained from a 2024 health survey, a Daily Heat Risk Forecast was developed to reflect the forecasts of the three current products for every day in the Columbia …
The Mountains Call: Escaping To Zones Of Seclusion, Alec Lee Parry
The Mountains Call: Escaping To Zones Of Seclusion, Alec Lee Parry
Theses and Dissertations
The biographical and thematical overlap between the literature of Austrian authors Ingeborg Bachmann and Thomas Bernhard, and Swiss writers Max Frisch and Fleur Jaeggy, is established in literary scholarship. However, similarities in the role Alpine spaces play in their works remain unaccounted for. The Alps represent a cultural and geographical boundary between linguistic identities and international borders. Protagonists across this dissertation’s three chapters face internal crises, prompting them to move to “zones of seclusion.” Within these “zones of seclusion,” characters spark discussions of collective memory even if they are isolated themselves. These peripheral locations force recollection, often on collective memory, …
The Enchantment And Disenchantment Of The Virgin Mary From Late Middle Ages Through The Reformation, Quentin Jameson
The Enchantment And Disenchantment Of The Virgin Mary From Late Middle Ages Through The Reformation, Quentin Jameson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes the Virgin Mary’s role in late medieval and early modern high magic, arguing that her presence and absence in magic display cases of enchantment and disenchantment. Starting in the twelfth century, debates on Mary’s immaculate conception and purity gradually reshaped and elevated her status in Latin Christendom. This enabled Mary to be an active agent within magic as a purifier and advocate. However, early modern natural philosophers and leaders of the Reformation removed these divine abilities from Mary, producing a disenchanted Virgin within high forms of magic.
This thesis applies Karen Barad’s concept of intra-activity and continuous …

The Secondary City: Georgetown And The Waccamaw Neck Within A Global Maritime Perspective, 1740-1850, John Paden Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
Georgetown is not and has never been the primary city on the South Carolina coast. Its harbor is shallow and muddy and its urban development lacks the commercial density found in more prominent Atlantic port cities such as New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Charleston. Despite all indicators to the contrary, this marshy backwater outpost became the second richest port in the United States prior to 1850 through rice and indigo exportation. As a result, the port drew people, goods, and ideas from around the Atlantic. Despite its small size and limited cultural relevance, Georgetown was a regional node for international …

Coastal Development Effects On Estuarine Benthic Microalgal Communities, Henry Christopher Guy
Theses and Dissertations
As key drivers of neritic primary productivity, benthic microalgae (BMA) play essential roles in biogeochemical cycling and estuarine food webs. When considered alongside their shallow, restricted habitats, BMA contribute disproportionately to global carbon fixation. However, the extent of human impact on BMA communities is largely unknown. This study aimed to quantify anthropogenic forcing through specific abiotic drivers of benthic microalgal success. BMA biomass, community composition, porewater nutrients, and sediment composition were measured within two South Carolina Estuaries. North Inlet and Murrells Inlet share similar geographic and morphological characteristics but differ significantly in terms of watershed population. Dissolved phosphate, nitrate, and …

A Tail Of Consumption: Essays On Pet-Person Identities And Their Effects On Consumers, Mackenzie Micheala Volk
Theses and Dissertations
This work examines how exposure to pet-person identities — identifying as a dog person or a cat person — affects consumer behavior. Across two chapters, results show that exposure to dog-person cues increases preferences for bold and conspicuous product features through heightened desire for dominance-based status signaling. Additionally, exposure to cat-person cues activates a cat-person mindset, boosting support for inclusive businesses and policies by increasing minority support and justice sensitivity. Together, these findings suggest that subtle identity cues in the marketplace can meaningfully shape consumer preferences and social attitudes, with implications for how brands position themselves and how policymakers and …
