Liqiud-Liquid Extraction As An Alternative Separation Technique For Ethanol-Water Solutions, Michael Pirc

Theses and Dissertations

The feasibility of liquid extraction as an economic alternative to the ternary azeotrope distillation of an ethanol-water fermenta tion mixture was studied. Experimentation included the determination of the attractiveness of the potential solvents "Freon" TF, 1-pentene, ethyl ether, unleaded gasoline, and #2 diesel fuel. Selectivities and distribution coefficients for these solvents were determined. Analysis included generation of a process flowsheet and the resultant energy requirements and process economics.

Unleaded gasoline was selected aver #2 diesel fuel as the more attractive solvent based on the distribution coefficients, and "Freon" TF, 1-pentene, and ethyl ether were ruled out as potential solvents.

A Study Of Four Arts Enrichment Activities, Mary Etten-Johnson Dec 1979

A Study Of Four Arts Enrichment Activities, Mary Etten-Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation is a descriptive study of formative research in four arts enrichment activities developed for the elementary classroom. The appendix contains the essential parts of this description. The rationale for developing enrichment activities for the elementary classroom is related to the lack of background and confidence many elementary educators have for the arts in education. The traditional practice leads educators to exclude arts enrichment activities from their programs.

The formative research in this study is based on four enrichment units used by teacher raters who were trained through in-service sessions. They taught the enrichment activities to eighty elementary students. …

Determination Of Terrestrial Heat Flow In Southeastern North Dakota, Dean A. Zabel

Theses and Dissertations

Terrestrial heat flow measurements have been carried out at three sites in Southeastern North Dakota. The heat flow values were calculated from temperature gradients measured in three wells and thermal conductivities measured in the lab using samples from these wells.

At two of the sites values were obtained in Precambrian layers. Near Lidgerwood, North Dakota measurements in a layer of weathered Precambrian yielded a value of 1.21 HFU. At a site near Blanchard, North Dakota measurements in a Precambrian greenstone yielded a value of 0.76 HFU.

At a third site near Wheatland, North Dakota, no Precambrian layer was accessible for …

A Preliminary Investigation Of Physical-Chemical Treatment Of Slagging Gasifier Aqueous Effluent, Kirk B. Hird Aug 1979

A Preliminary Investigation Of Physical-Chemical Treatment Of Slagging Gasifier Aqueous Effluent, Kirk B. Hird

Theses and Dissertations

The feasibility of treating slagging gasifier wastewater by physical-chemical means was studied. Pretreatment and treatment flow schemes were developed by using batch and continuous tests. Results were based mainly on wastewater residual total organic carbon (TOC). A treatment facility was designed and economically evaluated.

It was found that slagging gasifier wastewater is treatable by physical-chemical means using activated carbon and chemical oxidation as the two principal treatment steps. A pretreatment scheme consisting of lime addition, ammonia stripping, and recarbonation-coagu- lation was found to sufficiently purify the raw gasifier liquor so that activated carbon adsorption and chemical oxidation could be applied …

A Study Of The Activation Of Carbon Dioxide Of North Dakota Lignite, Rodney J. Kadrmas

Theses and Dissertations

Activated carbon was produced from carbonized North Dakota lignite using carbon dioxide as an activating agent. A range of carbonizing temperatures, activation temperatures and residence times were investigated. Activated carbons produced were compared to commercial activated carbons using iodine and methylene blue adsorption tests and the heat of wetting test.

Carbons were produced that adsorbed nearly the same amount of methylene blue as the commercial carbons, Darco G-60 and Norit A. The methylene blue adsorption by the best carbons (C63 and C83) was superior to that for the commercial carbons, Calgon Cal and Linde LCK.

An acid washed carbon (C83) …

Aspects Of Sedimentology And Fluvial Morphology Of A Part Of The Little Missouri River, North Dakota, Paul C. Jeffcoat-Sacco

Theses and Dissertations

The Little Missouri River drains 21,500 km in Wyoming, Montana, and the Dakotas- The river is perpetually muddy, although the bulk of its deposits are fine to medium silty sand. The discharge ranges between 0 and 3000 m^/s, with a mean value of approximately 17 m'Vs.

Between Medora, North Dakota and Lake Sakakawea 250 km downstream, the river changes from meandering to braided. Braiding may be a transitory response to the decrease in discharge following the spring flood, although more likely braiding is the result of post-glacial changes in drainage, when the river was diverted eastward from its original course. …
