A Study Of The Literary Qualities In The Diary Of Hosea Stout, Richard G. Ellsworth

The aim of this thesis is to present the diaries of Hosea Stout in the light of literary criticism and analysis. Two questions have been asked: do the diaries contain literary quality by revealing the characteristics, attitudes, abilities, and feelings of Hosea Stout; and, does Hosea Stout's style contain the literary elements necessary to distinquish it from ordinary communication. Passages from the diaries have been quoted and analyzed to answer these questions. Conclusions are made after each analysis, after each chapter, and at the end of the thesis.

The Latter-day Saints look forward to an era of righteous peace under a world government having its central seats of authority in the City of Zion which is to be built upon the American continent and in Jerusalem upon the eastern hemisphere. (The probelm of this thesis is limited more specifically to the development of Zion's branch of this world order.) The earliest accounts of their history give information relating to basic principles and doctrines which have consistently developed to form a relatively complete concept of principles inherent within this proposed organization. The purpose of this thesis is to present a general history of Utah State Prison in order that a record of that institution may be preserved. This phase of Utah history has long been neglected. It is hoped that a contribution has also been made to a better understanding of Utah's penal system.
The present penal system in use in the state of Utah had its beginning with the early Mormon settlements in Salt Lake Valley in 1847. The first laws and judicial bodies of the Mormons were very closely tied to their religious beliefs. The handling of criminals was …
