A Comparison Of Direct Instruction And Experiential Learning Techniques To Assess Agricultural Knowledge And Agricultural Literacy Gains In Private School Students, Timothy Bradford Jr. May 2016

A Comparison Of Direct Instruction And Experiential Learning Techniques To Assess Agricultural Knowledge And Agricultural Literacy Gains In Private School Students, Timothy Bradford Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The United States has shifted from a once agrarian, to a predominantly urban society (Riedel, 2006). Currently, less than 2% of the U.S. population live on farms. Coupled with urbanization, this has contributed to the decline of an agriculturally literate population (EPA, 2013; Kovar & Ball, 2013). One strategy to alter the public’s perception of agriculture and increase agricultural literacy is implementing an educational environment that promotes agricultural activities via experience (Blair, 2009). Experiential learning has been championed by prominent educational theorists John Dewey and David Kolb. Experiential learning is conceptualized as a process where relevant experiences are the foundation …

A Comparison Of Mixed Integer Programming And A Heuristic Approach For Harvest Blocking In Australia, Ronald Gordon Taylor May 2016

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of harvest scheduling is to produce a practical operations schedule that can be implemented in the field by operational foresters and maximizes all values. The resulting harvest units need to represent a close approximation to what will be done operationally and while emulating natural disturbance regimes and topographic boundaries. using flow direction surfaces. Two methods of meeting spatially acceptable harvest units through a heuristic algorithm and a mixed integer programming method. A factor analysis was conducted on both to determine the statistical significance between 3 forest characterizations and mean financial and shape index indicators. Mixed integer programming had …

Ecology And Epidemiology Of West Nile Virus In Mississippi, Wendy Carol Varnado May 2016

Ecology And Epidemiology Of West Nile Virus In Mississippi, Wendy Carol Varnado

Theses and Dissertations

Since its introduction in 2002, West Nile virus (WNV) persists in Mississippi with dozens of cases and a few deaths each year. Little is known about the epidemiology and ecology of WNV in our state. This is the first study of the dynamics of West Nile virus in Mississippi utilizing both mosquito and human case surveillance. Herein I showed that the primary vector for WNV in MS, Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus, is associated with anthropogenic urban environments as opposed to rural wooded areas. I also found that other potential WNV vectors in MS are likely involved in enzootic transmission among natural …

Effects Of Fluid Mg/Ca And Dp18so On Geochemistry Of Calcium Carbonates: Studies On Inorganic And Natural Samples, Aleksandra Vladimirovna Novak May 2016

Effects Of Fluid Mg/Ca And Dp18so On Geochemistry Of Calcium Carbonates: Studies On Inorganic And Natural Samples, Aleksandra Vladimirovna Novak

Theses and Dissertations

Mg/Ca and d18O derived from marine biogenic carbonates have been widely used as reliable paleoenvironmental proxy for seawater temperature, salinity and water mass circulation reconstructions. The use of Mg/Ca is based on long residence time in seawater and uniform distribution with habitat depth of planktonic foraminifera. Fluid Mg/Ca affects mineralogy of CaCO3, thus high seawater Mg/Ca favors precipitation of aragonite instead of calcite. The records of d18O in carbonates yield strong correlation with seawater temperature, salinity and d18O. Distribution of d18O in water is highly heterogeneous within longitude, latitude and depth. Therefore a combination of foraminieral d18O and Mg/Ca could …

Using Nmr Spectroscopy To Investigate The Binding Of Dna To The Globular Domain Of Histone H1.0, Sri Ramya Tata

Theses and Dissertations

Linker histones (H1) are a family of lysine-rich proteins that bind to or near the point at which DNA enters and exits the nucleosomal core. A number of studies have shown that H1 expression levels are altered in cancer and that variant-specific changes can be observed in different tumor cells. Although several crystal structures are published for core-histone/DNA complex (nucleosome), the location of linker histone and its interactions are poorly understood. This study attempts to answer several questions regarding the interactions of histone H1 with double stranded partner DNA. Preliminary NMR assignments of this protein have been determined. We also …

Plant Community And White-Tailed Deer Nutritional Carrying Capacity Response To Intercropping Switchgrass In Loblolly Pine Plantations, Ethan Jacob Greene

Theses and Dissertations

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a cellulosic feedstock for alternative energy production that could grow well between planted pines (Pinus spp.). Southeastern planted pine occupies 15.8 million hectares and thus, switchgrass intercropping could affect biodiversity if broadly implemented. Therefore, I evaluated effects of intercropping switchgrass in loblolly pine (P. taeda L.) plantations on plant community diversity, plant biomass production, and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus Zimmerman) nutritional carrying capacity. In a randomized complete block design, I assigned three treatments (switchgrass intercropped, switchgrass monoculture, and a “control” of traditional pine management) to 4 replicates of 10-ha experimental units in Kemper County, Mississippi …

An Automated Study Of Antioxidant Potentials Of Polar Extract Of Turmeric As Influenced By Ultraviolet Radiation, Nagham Salah Alawadi May 2016

An Automated Study Of Antioxidant Potentials Of Polar Extract Of Turmeric As Influenced By Ultraviolet Radiation, Nagham Salah Alawadi

Theses and Dissertations

Turmeric polar extract (TPE) was obtained by dielectric-precipitation of turmeric slurry and found to contain three proteins with two in the 10-11 KDa range being dominant. Antioxidative activity and persistence (AP) of TPE (5%, w/v) respectively showed 87% and 85% greater generation of alkoxy- and peroxyl radicals compared the non-redox-active buffer alone showing significant (p<0.05) pro-oxidative behavior. Conversely, purified curcumin (CU) (0.1% w/v) was dramatically antioxidative with AA and AP values of 2,828 and 1,129%, respectively, compared to the blank. However, a combination of the two at the same concentration dropped these values to 590 and 389%, respectively, reflecting dramatic dampening of the efficacy of CU. Ultraviolet radiation significantly modulated the efficacy of CU where UVB (300 nm) exposure gave the highest enhancement when limited to five min. Data showed that turmeric contains highly pro-oxidant polar proteins that significantly dramatically diminishes the beneficial antioxidative efficacy of its principal phytochemical, CU.

Analysis Of Atp Synthase Super-Complex Assembly And Mitochondrial Morphology In Pcp1 Mutants, Mary Elizabeth Huddleston May 2016

Analysis Of Atp Synthase Super-Complex Assembly And Mitochondrial Morphology In Pcp1 Mutants, Mary Elizabeth Huddleston

Theses and Dissertations

Mitochondria are double membraned organelles responsible for the majority of ATP production in eukaryotic cells. The mitochondrial inner membrane is folded into cristae structures and is the site of the electron transport chain which terminates in ATP generation. ATP is produced by ATP synthase, a protein complex that has also been shown to have a role in the maintenance of cristae folding. This activity is dependent on Tim11p, a subunit required for the dimerization of ATP synthase super-complexes. Additional proteins located within the inner membrane that are important to mitochondrial morphology include Pcp1p, a serine protease, and its substrate, Mgm1p. …

Tasteless, Cheap, And Southern?: The Rise And Decline Of The Farm-Raised Catfish Industry, Karen Senaga May 2016

Tasteless, Cheap, And Southern?: The Rise And Decline Of The Farm-Raised Catfish Industry, Karen Senaga

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation traces the rise and recent decline of the farm-raised catfish industry. From the 1960s to the 2000s, farmers and scientists reengineered the river catfish into an agro-industrial food crop. Through extensive agricultural scientific research and marketing, the farmed catfish industry changed the history of the animal, its image, its flesh and bone, its natural environment, and its place in society all by changing—or in an effort to change—its taste. This process moved the catfish from the ranks of a muddy tasting wild fish mainly associated with the poor, to a tasteless, cheap food consumed by all classes and …

Visual estimations of injury (VEOI) in wheat, height reduction, and yield reduction due to rimsulfuron and glyphosate titration was higher when compared to rimsulfuron only treatments with respect to 1/2X through the 1/256X treatments. Sequestration of 2,4-D within agricultural hose types did differ due to hose type and is confirmed by analytical testing, but field observation of wheat did not show differences among treatments due to VEOI, height reduction or …

The Functional Role Of Sfrp3/4 In The Wnt Network That Governs Positioning Of The Anterior Neuroectoderm Around The Anterior Pole In The Sea Urchin Embryo, Anita Khadka May 2016

The Functional Role Of Sfrp3/4 In The Wnt Network That Governs Positioning Of The Anterior Neuroectoderm Around The Anterior Pole In The Sea Urchin Embryo, Anita Khadka

Theses and Dissertations

The anterior neuroectoderm (ANE) is progressively restricted along the anterior-posterior axis to a territory around the anterior pole during the blastula stages in sea urchin embryos. Information obtained from Wnt/beta-catenin, Wnt/JNK and Wnt/PKC signaling pathways is responsible for this positioning process. Several secreted Wnt modulators of the Dickkopf and Secreted Frizzled Related Protein families (Dkk1, Dkk3, and sFRP1/5) are expressed within the ANE and play important roles in the Wnt signaling network during this process. In this study, we have characterized the function of another secreted Wnt modulator, sFRP3/4, within this Wnt signaling network. Here we have shown that the …

Investigation The Influence Of Density-Dependent And Density-Independent Factors On Northern Bobwhite Population Processes, Mark Dewitt Mcconnell May 2016

Investigation The Influence Of Density-Dependent And Density-Independent Factors On Northern Bobwhite Population Processes, Mark Dewitt Mcconnell

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding regulation of wild animal populations is important in ecological investigations and applied wildlife management. Progress in understanding regulatory processes has been hindered by a long-running debate over the role of density-dependent and density-independent variables in population regulation. Population regulation of exploited species is of particular interest because harvest theory is predicated on assumptions of density-dependent feedback. However, for many exploited species, the functional relationships and mechanisms of population regulation via density dependence are not quantified (e.g., Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus). Compounding this task is the lack of a mechanistic understanding of the influence of density-independent factors in population regulation. …

Lipid Accumulation By Rhodococcus Rhodochrous, Sara Ashley Shields-Menard May 2016

Lipid Accumulation By Rhodococcus Rhodochrous, Sara Ashley Shields-Menard

Theses and Dissertations

Oleaginous microbes can accumulate over 20% of their cell dry weight as lipids that are stored as intracellular energy reserves. The characterization of other oleaginous bacteria creates opportunities for the development of alternative feedstocks and technologies. Rhodococcus rhodochrous is a gram-positive bacterium known for its biodegradation capabilities, but little is known about its ability to accumulate lipids. As R. rhodochrous is capable of degrading hydrocarbon gasses and other aromatics, this study aims to investigate any associated lipid production during the conversion of waste and nontraditional carbon sources, such as model lignocellulosic inhibitors. Lignocellulosic biomass is the most abundant and renewable …

Selection And Breeding To Improve Commercial Germplasm And Increase Germination Percentage Of Eastern Gamagrass [Tripsacum Dactyloides (L.) L.], Jesse Ira Morrison

Theses and Dissertations

Perennial warm-season grasses constitute the backbone of many forage production systems, whether for grazing or harvested feed. North American native plants, specifically grasses, forbs and legumes offer unique ecosystem benefits along with forage quality and digestibility that are unmatched by introduced species. The disparity in breeding and research focused on improvement of introduced species as opposed to native genera has led to inflated use of introduced species as forage types in lieu of native options, due to their unimproved nature. Eastern gamagrass [Tripsacum dactyloides (L.) L.] is proven to be a widely adapted, highly productive forage species in the southeast, …

Evaluation Of Management Strategies For The Headworm Complex In Grain Sorghum, Christopher Scott Dobbins May 2016
