Brain And Hepatic Microsomal Metabolism Of Phorate, Marissa Lucento
Brain And Hepatic Microsomal Metabolism Of Phorate, Marissa Lucento
Theses and Dissertations
Phorate (O,O-diethyl S-ethylthiomethyl phosphorodithioate) is a toxic organophosphate anticholinesterase insecticide. Organophosphate insecticides can cause respiratory depression and seizures due to acetylcholinesterase inhibition. Inhibited acetylcholinesterase cannot break down the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine; thus, causing an overload of acetylcholine in synapses and neuromuscular junctions. Oxidative desulfuration, from metabolism by cytochrome P450 enzymes, converts the P=S phosphorothionate group on phorate to the P=O oxon group. Electrophilic oxon groups attack the active site on acetylcholinesterase, inducing the toxicity associated with organophosphate insecticides. Possible further bioactivation to phorate-oxon-sulfoxide and phorate-oxon-sulfone near the site of acetylcholinesterase in the brain may increase acetylcholinesterase inhibitory potency. Adult male Sprague-Dawley …
Trans Men And The Criminal Justice System: An Exploratory Analysis Examining Intersectional Experiences, Sarah Rogers
Trans Men And The Criminal Justice System: An Exploratory Analysis Examining Intersectional Experiences, Sarah Rogers
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the lives of trans men and their experiences with pathways to or avoidance of the criminal justice system. I used feminist criminological theory, specifically feminist pathways theory, as well as queer criminological theory, and intersectionality to explore these men’s experiences with child abuse, sexual victimization, homelessness, the presence of support systems, and coping strategies. Through the use of 27 semi-structured, in-depth phone interviews with trans men across the United States, I find common experiences among those who have been incarcerated (15) and those who have not (12). Regarding trans men’s pathways to offending, I find similar victimization …
Trends And Drivers Of Conservation Easements In The United States, Sabhyata Lamichhane
Trends And Drivers Of Conservation Easements In The United States, Sabhyata Lamichhane
Theses and Dissertations
The use of conservation easements has been increasing in the United States. However, patterns of growth over time are different for individual states. Little is known on how determinants of conservation easements interact with one another and affect the choice of conservation approaches. The study objective was to analyze conservation easement trends and examine underlying choice determinants in the United States. Panel data models were employed to assess determinants of easement acres and contracts from 1995 to 2015. Findings revealed that the northern United States has the most percentage of land area under conservation easements. The growth in conservation easements …
Using Animated Videos And Prompt Delay Procedures To Train Children With Autism To Label Situation-Based Emotions, Margaret Powell
Using Animated Videos And Prompt Delay Procedures To Train Children With Autism To Label Situation-Based Emotions, Margaret Powell
Theses and Dissertations
Research has indicated that individuals with ASD have deficits in the ability to correctly identify and interpret the emotions and feelings of others. The ability to recognize the emotions of others has shown to be extremely beneficial in a number of ways. On the other hand, the inability to recognize the emotions of others has been linked to a number of negative outcomes, including inappropriate behaviors, as well as mental health, personal, social, and academic difficulties. The purpose of the current study was to extend the previous literature on effective strategies for teaching individuals with ASD to correctly label the …
Struggling Adolescent Readers: A Case Study Of Teacher Beliefs And Practices Using The How People Learn Framework, Laura Katherine Thomas Hood
Struggling Adolescent Readers: A Case Study Of Teacher Beliefs And Practices Using The How People Learn Framework, Laura Katherine Thomas Hood
Theses and Dissertations
In this qualitative study, I explored teacher beliefs and practices about struggling adolescent readers. I chose to study 3 middle school 7th- and 8th-grade English teachers based on purposeful and convenience sampling through principal recommendation. My data consisted of interviews, observations, and documents to understand what teachers believe about struggling adolescent readers and what teachers of struggling middle school students do during instruction. I created the interviews and observation protocols and analyzed the data using the How People Learn Framework (Darling-Hammond & Bransford, 2005; National Research Council, 2000). Findings suggest (1) negative extrinsic motivation was used to boost student assessment …
Improved Monitoring And Decision-Making To Manage Atypical Aeromonas Hydrophila In Catfish Aquaculture Ponds, Bradley Richardson
Improved Monitoring And Decision-Making To Manage Atypical Aeromonas Hydrophila In Catfish Aquaculture Ponds, Bradley Richardson
Theses and Dissertations
Commercial catfish production is an inveterate industry within the southeastern United States. Bacterial disease is a significant detriment to global aquaculture, including the United States catfish industry. Among them, an atypical strain of the bacterium Aeromonas hydrophila has plagued the industry since the late 2000s. Atypical A. hydrophila (aAh) outbreaks are largely acute, resulting in catastrophic losses. The disease ecology, prevalence, and genetic distribution are poorly understood. Atypical Aeromonas hydrophila displays a rapid onset with few warning signs of the impending disease, making it difficult for early detection. At present there are two recognized haplotypes of aAh. This project aimed …
Innate And Adaptive Immune Responses Of Channel Catfish To Edwardsiella Ictaluri Wild Type And Live Attenuated Vaccine Candidates, Ozgur Erdogan
Innate And Adaptive Immune Responses Of Channel Catfish To Edwardsiella Ictaluri Wild Type And Live Attenuated Vaccine Candidates, Ozgur Erdogan
Theses and Dissertations
Edwardsiella ictaluri causes enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC), a devastating disease in the channel catfish industry. Our research group has developed several E. ictaluri live attenuated vaccine (LAV) candidates (EiΔevpB, EiΔevpBΔfur, EiΔevpBΔhfq, EiΔevpBΔfurΔhfq), which were able to stimulate an immune response in vaccinated channel catfish and reduce ESC. However, innate, and adaptive immune responses in the lymphoid tissues of channel catfish to these LAVs are not known well. The overall goal of the project is to determine the role of adaptive and innate immune responses in catfish after vaccination with LAVs. Analysis of innate and adaptive immune-related gene expressions showed …
Integrin-Linked Kinases Are Components Of A Cell Wall Integrity Signaling Pathway Required For Innate Immune Responses, Gizem Dimlioglu
Integrin-Linked Kinases Are Components Of A Cell Wall Integrity Signaling Pathway Required For Innate Immune Responses, Gizem Dimlioglu
Theses and Dissertations
Signaling networks have a crucial role in every aspect of plant communication with the environment. There is significant interest in identifying signal transduction pathways governing CW homeostasis in interactions with pathogens and symbionts. In previous work, our lab has demonstrated that the RAF-like Integrin-Linked Kinase 1 (ILK1) is a negative regulator of FLS2 (Flagellin Sensing2)-mediated signaling, required for defense against a low-virulence P. syringae T3SS-mutant, and modulating cellular ion homeostasis through functional interactions with Ca2+ sensor CML9 and HAK5 K+ transporter (Brauer et al., 2016). In this work we revealed that ILK1 homologs, ILK4 and ILK5, are required for plant …

Investigating Fear: Exploring Mediators And Moderators Of Mental Health Distress Among Lgbtq+ Communities Using The Minority Stress Model, Melanie R. Walsh
Theses and Dissertations
The current study is a secondary analysis examining the role of fear of discrimination and its influence and relationship with heterosexist discrimination, social support, and mental health distress among LGBTQ+ adults in the Deep South. A sample of 500 LGBTQ+ identified adults living across Mississippi completed a comprehensive needs assessment survey tapping into nine life domains. The current study investigated fear of discrimination as a form of rejection sensitivity utilizing the minority stress framework (Meyer, 1995, 2003). Mediating and moderating influences within the minority stress model were examined using series of regression analysis. Fear of discrimination operated as a mechanism …
Longitudinal Examination Of Behavioral Markers Of Positive Valence Systems And Anhedonia, Duncan Jordan
Longitudinal Examination Of Behavioral Markers Of Positive Valence Systems And Anhedonia, Duncan Jordan
Theses and Dissertations
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has provided a framework for studying psychopathology known as the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC), which conceptualizes depression and other mental disorders on a continuum of levels of analysis, ranging from molecular dysfunction to impairment in cognitive systems indexed by behavioral paradigms. Within the RDoC, these units of analysis and their corresponding normal-to-abnormal functioning can be placed within six domains: (1) negative valence systems; (2) positive valence systems; (3) cognitive systems; (4) social processes; (5) arousal and regulatory systems; and (6) sensorimotor systems. Given the recent emphasis on identifying further mechanisms associated with positive …
Mississippian Period (1000 – 1700 A.D.) Wattle And Daub Construction In The Yazoo Basin: Comparing Energy Expenditure Using Context And Construction Methods, William David Harris
Mississippian Period (1000 – 1700 A.D.) Wattle And Daub Construction In The Yazoo Basin: Comparing Energy Expenditure Using Context And Construction Methods, William David Harris
Theses and Dissertations
Native American societies in the Yazoo Basin during the Mississippian Period (ca. 1000 – 1700 A.D.) extensively built platform mounds often associated with “elite” or “sacred” areas, and exotic or energy expensive artifacts. Excessive energy expenditure, or “waste” behaviors, may be explained with costly signaling and bet-hedging, hypotheses stemming from evolutionary theory. I argue that costly signaling may best explain the waste evident in hierarchical and agricultural Mississippian Period societies of the Mississippi Valley. Consequently, I feel that differing levels of energy expenditure may be evident from the remains of perishable construction excavated from mound summits and off-mound contexts. During …

This research investigates the efficacy of liquid-precursor thermal spray coating (TSC) as a facile wood modification technique to bring hydrophobicity and UV durability to a wooden surface. The technique was successful in depositing Cu and TiO2 particles onto southern yellow pine (SYP) veneers by using copper azole, copper quaternary, and titanium tetraisopropoxide as the precursor solutions. Using optimized settings, the average coating surface coverage of > 90% and an average coating thickness of > 5 μm were obtained. The coatings displayed up to 4H rating in the film hardness scale and up to 3B rating in adhesion strength scale, suggesting reasonable mechanical …
Monoculture To Biculture: Cover Cropping Effects On Biomass, Nitrogen Dynamics, And Yield In A Strip-Tilled Corn Production System, Eduardo Samuel Garay Lagos
Monoculture To Biculture: Cover Cropping Effects On Biomass, Nitrogen Dynamics, And Yield In A Strip-Tilled Corn Production System, Eduardo Samuel Garay Lagos
Theses and Dissertations
Improved N management is required to enhance crop productivity, while reducing concomitant losses. Research was conducted for 4-y studying winter cover crops. Three legume species grown alone or with either cereal rye (Secale cereale) or ‘Tillage Radish®’ (Raphanus sativus L.) were used to quantify cover crop biomass and N content plus their effects on corn grain yield and N recovery. The effects of these cropping systems on selected soil health indicators was also determined. Rye bicultures enhanced biomass production, but antagonistically affected corn performance. Radish inclusion resulted in equal or greater cover crop N than rye. In year 3, the …
Genetics Of A Color Polymorphism In Heliconius Doris, Caleb Benson
Genetics Of A Color Polymorphism In Heliconius Doris, Caleb Benson
Theses and Dissertations
Balancing selection refers to the maintenance of multiple phenotypic variants within a population. There are a number of proposed mechanisms explaining the origin and persistence of the evolution and genetics of polymorphisms, but they largely remain unresolved in the specific instances in which they occur. This study aims to identify the genetic basis of a polymorphism in the butterfly, Heliconius doris, which displays four distinct color patterns on the dorsal hindwings of individuals. While Mullerian mimetic theory proposes that phenotypes will converge on a common, aposematic phenotype, this is not the case in Heliconius doris. We identify an interval perfectly …
Gopher Tortoises In The Anthropocene: Investigating The Effects Of Fire, Temperature, And Competition On An Ecosystem Engineer, Weston Curtis Thompson
Gopher Tortoises In The Anthropocene: Investigating The Effects Of Fire, Temperature, And Competition On An Ecosystem Engineer, Weston Curtis Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
Gopher tortoises are ecosystem engineers whose burrows provide habitat to >350 species. Prescribed fire is used to manage tortoise habitat, but fire timing is mostly restricted to the vegetative dormant season. Restricted fire timing in combination with white-tailed deer competition may negatively affect tortoises. To address these concerns, we quantified these species’ dietary overlap and conducted a field experiment to examine impacts of fire phenology on plants and animals. Although tortoises and deer consumed ~75% of the same plants, their diets were statistically dissimilar. Fire altered plant community composition and increased foliar crude protein and phosphorus while decreasing calcium. Deer …

Identifying Specific Difficulties Predicted By Emotion Regulation Strategy Use And Related Facets, Ashley Steverson Coleman
Theses and Dissertations
Emotion dysregulation is a transdiagnostic clinical feature of many psychological disorders. Prior research has focused on generalized emotion dysregulation, whereas specific emotion regulation difficulties have not been explored in as much depth. The current study expanded this body of research by examining specific emotion regulation difficulties and relationships with broader emotion regulation functioning, including strategy use, affect intensity, and flexibility. College students (N = 380) completed a self-report battery of emotion regulation measures. A MANOVA indicated that patterns of emotion regulation functioning differentially predict specific emotion regulation difficulties. A multivariate regression (GLM) identified the facets of emotion regulation that predict …

Impact Of Sleep Duration, Sleep Quality, And Physical Activity On Obesity Indices Among Adolescents, Sarah Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
Adolescent prevalence of obesity and at-risk WC has continued to rise worldwide. Sleep duration, sleep quality, and physical activity have been hypothesized as contributing factors to this increase. PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the sleep–obesity relation in adolescents. METHODS: Using data from the 2015-2016 NHANES(n=454; ages 16-18 years), the effect of sleep duration, sleep quality, and MVPA on BMI and WC by gender was analyzed using appropriate sampling weights. RESULTS: Longer sleep duration was associated with increased BMI (β=0.07; 0.065, p<0.05) and WC (β=0.069; 0.13, p<0.05) among males and females. Poor sleep quality was associated with increased BMI among males and females (β= 0.04; 0.08, p< 0.05). A significant main effect was observed across sleep duration, sleep quality and MVPA via multiple regression for both BMI and WC. CONCLUSIONS: For both males and females, BMI and WC were impacted by excessive sleep, poor sleep quality, and low MVPA, with greater associations among males.
Impairment In Adult Adhd: Effects Of Adhd Symptoms, Executive Function, And Sleep, Morgan M. Dorr
Impairment In Adult Adhd: Effects Of Adhd Symptoms, Executive Function, And Sleep, Morgan M. Dorr
Theses and Dissertations
While Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) remains one of the most common psychological disorders diagnosed, current understanding of the disorders expression and factors contributing to impairment in early adulthood remains limited. In an effort to better understand current issues with ADHD assessment and treatment in emerging adults, this study aimed to examine relationships between symptoms, executive function (EF), sleep, and impairment. Overall results of this study indicate that together, ADHD symptoms, EF, and sleep account for a significant proportion of variance in impairment. Additionally, results indicate that EF moderates the relationship between ADHD symptoms and impairment, and that sleep may be a …
Evaluation Of Synergistic Opportunities Among Exogenous Enzymes For Optimal Broiler Performance, Courtney Ennis
Evaluation Of Synergistic Opportunities Among Exogenous Enzymes For Optimal Broiler Performance, Courtney Ennis
Theses and Dissertations
Currently, feed enzyme supplementation into commercial broiler diets is a routine practice due to hydrolysis of antinutrients, such as non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) and phytate (IP6); ultimately leading to optimized broiler production. As a result, the market has grown rapidly, and a multitude of feed enzymesare commercially available. Complete removal of antinutrients has not been achieved and research has primarily focused on the use of singular enzyme inclusion. Due to biochemical differences among enzyme characteristics, there may be potential for synergistic action to remove antinutrients and further maximize broiler performance. Therefore, the overall objective of this dissertation was to investigate enzyme …

Participants included 24 adults with CHARGE syndrome and 31 parents of individuals with CHARGE syndrome. The Attitudes of Sexuality-Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ASQ-ID) was completed by all participants and was adapted to address this specific population for the current study. Using a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), four themes of sexuality from the ASQ-ID (i.e., sexual …
Evolutionary Patterns Of Amoebozoa Revealed By Gene Content And Phylogenomics, Seungho Kang
Evolutionary Patterns Of Amoebozoa Revealed By Gene Content And Phylogenomics, Seungho Kang
Theses and Dissertations
Amoebozoa is the eukaryotic supergroup sister to Obazoa, the lineage that contains the animals (including us humans) and Fungi. Amoebozoa is extraordinarily diverse, encompassing important model organisms and significant pathogens. Although amoebozoans are integral to global nutrient cycles and present in nearly all environments, they remain vastly understudied. Here we have isolated a naked eukaryotic amoeba with filose subpseudopodia, and a simple life cycle consisting of a trophic amoeba and a cyst stage. Using a wholistic approach including light, electron, fluorescence microscopy and SSU rDNA, we find that this amoeboid organism fails to match any previously described eukaryote genus. Our …
Exploring The Role Of Host Species And Abiotic Factors On Epiphytic Bacterial Communities In Prickly Pear Cactus, Taylor Didesch
Exploring The Role Of Host Species And Abiotic Factors On Epiphytic Bacterial Communities In Prickly Pear Cactus, Taylor Didesch
Theses and Dissertations
The microorganisms that live in and on a host (the microbiome) influence host phenotype, health, and behavior in plants and animals. However, the effects of the host and environment on the composition of microbiome communities are unclear. This is especially true in arid and semi-arid environments such as deserts that filter many microorganisms. This study investigated variation in phyllosphere microbiotal bacterial assemblages of prickly pear cactus (Opuntia) across differing spatial scales, ecoregions, and taxa throughout Texas at two timepoints. I expected bacterial assemblages to differ significantly among Texas ecoregions and among species. Results support significant influences on bacterial assemblage composition …
Exploring The Vaginal Microbiome In Relation To Pregnancy Status And Reproductive Performance In Brangus Heifers, Riley Messman
Exploring The Vaginal Microbiome In Relation To Pregnancy Status And Reproductive Performance In Brangus Heifers, Riley Messman
Theses and Dissertations
Most research evaluating the effects of the reproductive tract microbiota on reproductive performance has been done in humans, thus far. In bovids, reproductive microbiota research is not as advanced, with preliminary conclusions, not supported by contamination checks or repeatability. Our studies concluded that endogenous reproductive hormones, days of gestation, and pregnancy status does not change the overall vaginal microbiota composition. Although, the overall composition did not change there were species level differences. These differences could have implications in reproductive performance and fertility in heifers. Heifers that undergo nutrient restriction have similar vaginal microbiota to adequately fed heifers with no species …

A Genetic Assessment Of The Blue Iguana Recovery Programme’S Success, And Prognosis For The Species’ Future Conservation, Mallory Mckinney
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, we used ostensibly neutral microsatellite markers to study genetic variance and heterozygosity of endangered Cyclura lewisi during captive management in the Blue Iguana Recovery Programme. We assessed the variation present in the founding population and how genetic diversity changed throughout the past 20 years of management. We also studied how heterozygosity may correlate with fitness through morphometric measures and success of recruitment after release into the wild. While we found a reduction in effective population size, standardized heterozygosity, and fixation indices did not significantly change from the founders to later generations. We found no evidence for inbreeding …
A Host-Guest System For Determining Residue Contributions To Protein Adsorption On Nanoparticles By Nmr, Md Siddik Alom
A Host-Guest System For Determining Residue Contributions To Protein Adsorption On Nanoparticles By Nmr, Md Siddik Alom
Theses and Dissertations
Nanoparticles have become increasingly useful in the fields of drug delivery and biosensing. In these applications, nanoparticles are frequently exposed to biological fluids, where proteins will spontaneously adsorb to the nanoparticle surface when exposed to a mixture of proteins. This project aims to present a predictive host-guest system for quantifying each residue’s contribution to nanoparticle binding. Initial studies revealed that lysine at position 13 plays a crucial role in the adsorption of GB3 to 15 nm citrate-coated spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Therefore, we have constructed a library of K13X GB3 variants, and our initial findings confirm that basic residues (Arg) …
