Characterizing Patterns Of Adherence To Physical Activity Goals In Behavioral Weight Control, Melissa Lee Stansbury Oct 2020

Characterizing Patterns Of Adherence To Physical Activity Goals In Behavioral Weight Control, Melissa Lee Stansbury

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Many individuals fall short of the physical activity (PA) goals provided during lifestyle programs, and there is considerable variability in weight loss response and adherence to recommendations for behavior change. Weight loss response within the early weeks of program initiation predicts future weight loss success; however, little is known about what distinguishes those who respond well to treatment from those who fail to respond. Exposing the behavioral patterns which underlie weight loss response may point towards targets for treatment optimization. The purpose of this study was to (1) characterize individuals with distinct patterns of adherence to PA goals during …

The Utility Of Multiple Structure Torsion Angle Alignment In Protein Active Site Description (Asd), Devaun L. Mcfarland Oct 2020

The Utility Of Multiple Structure Torsion Angle Alignment In Protein Active Site Description (Asd), Devaun L. Mcfarland

Theses and Dissertations

Proteins are responsible for various functions throughout organisms, or within the systems, they operate. Active-sites or functional/ binding sites are regions responsible for activity in a protein; they serve as a catalyst for reactions, attach or bind to other molecules (ligands), and maintain function. With the profusion of protein sequence and structure data, it's increasingly relevant to develop automated methods of identifying and investigating active-sites for proteins. Active-sites identification will have a direct impact: in better understanding molecular basis for diseases, assisting in drug design, the study of targeting mutants, and for functional annotation of unknown proteins. The proper knowledge …

A Novel Analytical Method For Studying Pharmacological Treatments For Affective Disorders In Neuroscience, Shane N. Berger Oct 2020

A Novel Analytical Method For Studying Pharmacological Treatments For Affective Disorders In Neuroscience, Shane N. Berger

Theses and Dissertations

Histamine and serotonin are important neurochemicals that maintain crucial brain functions. Both are thought to be altered in affective and neurodegenerative disorders such as depression and Parkinson’s disease. Histamine and serotonin are thought to modulate one another but the exact relationship remains unknown and this gap in knowledge makes diagnosing and treating disorders involving the transmitters difficult. The Hashemi lab studies serotonin neurochemistry to understand serotonin’s role in psychiatric disorders. However, histamine has remained an understudied neurotransmitter due to a lack of analytical tools. In 2015 and 2016, the Hashemi lab pioneered a novel detection method utilizing fast-scan cyclic voltammetry …

Incorporation And Measurement Of Uncertainty In Clustered And Spatial Data, Yuan Hong Oct 2020

Incorporation And Measurement Of Uncertainty In Clustered And Spatial Data, Yuan Hong

Theses and Dissertations

Analyzing population representative datasets for local estimation and predictions over time is important for monitoring related public health issues, however, there are many statistical challenges associated with such analyses. Mixed effect models are one of the common options which can incorporate time and spatial effect in the model and related inference is well established.

In the first part of this dissertation, to estimate area-level prevalence using individuallevel data, small area estimation (SAE) with post-stratified mixed effect models were used where sampling weights were also incorporated into it. However, if poststratification which requires more computation effort can improve estimation accuracy is …

Aqueous Kinetics Of Α-Hydroxyhippuric Acid Derivatives Bearing Electron-Withdrawing Groups As A Function Of Ph And Buffer Catalysts, Mohamad Imad Rafie

Theses and Dissertations

It has been shown that carbinolamides are intermediates in the enzyme-catalyzed synthesis of -amidated peptides. Although carbinolamides are important intermediates in the production of these hormones and have roles in other biological venues, little attention has been given to their mechanisms of reaction in water, and, thus, it is difficult to speculate how their reaction would be enzymatically catalyzed. The purpose of the work presented here was to synthesize structural analogs of the biological intermediates and study their mechanism of breakdown in water. -Hydroxyhippuric acid, a substrate for the enzymatic system, provides an easily modified template for the study of …

Development And Implementation Of A Coarse-Grained Markov State Model, Brian Chen Sep 2020

Development And Implementation Of A Coarse-Grained Markov State Model, Brian Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Markov State Models (MSMs) are constructed from Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation data, high-resolution spatial and temporal information stored in the form of trajectories, of biological processes, such as ligand-receptor bonding, as a model to understand detailed kinetic information. Traditional MSM implementations involve a clustering step that clusters the MD trajectories into thousands of experimentally unverifiable clusters known as "microstates" before lumping them together into "macrostates". This work details a novel software implementation, using a combination of R, Python, and Tcl, that I have created for the purpose of creating a coarse-grained MSM that directly clusters the MD trajectories into a …

Image Processing And Classification Of Remotely-Sensed Satellite Imagery: An Application Towards Cloud Detection, Oluwamuyiwa Adesola Adeegbe

Theses and Dissertations

Atmospheric studies have been carried out for decades to forecast weather and climate trends such as tropical storms, etc. Of recent concern is the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which has a relative influence on the weather and climate trends. Over the years, large weather satellites like the GOES series have been used to monitor these GHGs. However, an in-depth understanding of the movement of these gases requires consistent monitoring, which has given rise to the need for miniaturized satellites. Since the miniaturized satellites are novel, they require a ground-truth like the GOES-16 satellite to validate these observations. …

Bioprinted In Vitro Model Of Human Glioblastoma, Rachel Lauren Schwartz Aug 2020

Bioprinted In Vitro Model Of Human Glioblastoma, Rachel Lauren Schwartz

Theses and Dissertations

Glioblastoma multiform (GBM) is one of the most aggressive forms of primary brain tumors. GBM is fast progressing and resistant to treatment, resulting in a low survival rate. Conventional 2-dimensional tissue culture models cannot fully replicate the complexities of cancer lesions that contain multiple cell types and structures (e.g. vessels composed of endothelial cells, cancer cells, normal cells, etc.) as well as an intricate scaffold of proteins comprising the extracellular matrix (ECM). In addition, animal models cannot translate into the clinical disease in patients. Thus, this study has developed a bioprintable organ-on-a-chip (OOAC) model that mimics the important ECM factors …

Novel Material For Advanced Tissue Regeneration, Karrer Mahdi Kadum Alghazali Aug 2020

Novel Material For Advanced Tissue Regeneration, Karrer Mahdi Kadum Alghazali

Theses and Dissertations

Nerve tissue damage or failure can occur for various reasons, including infection, disease, aging, and trauma. The tissue microenvironment (extracellular matrix-ECM) plays a key role in regulating the self-renewal and recovery of damaged tissue. ECM-cell interactions govern cell migration and physiology, with biochemical and biophysical boundaries being the main factors that control ECM-cell interaction. Optimizing these boundaries for the recovering tissue will create a healthy microenvironment to support and enhance the recovery rate (1, 2). We have developed a novel, multidimensional nanocomposite system that incorporates gold nanorods (AuNRs) (aspect ratio of around 3) as an artificial ECM for cell adhesion, …

Predictors Of Paternal Postpartum Depression: A Meta-Analysis, Zachary Joseph Blackhurst Aug 2020

Predictors Of Paternal Postpartum Depression: A Meta-Analysis, Zachary Joseph Blackhurst

Theses and Dissertations

While major depression is a well-defined mental health condition, it's presentation can be vastly different across individuals and groups, and many factors impact one's vulnerability. A critical period of vulnerability to depression is the postpartum period. Despite the frequent assumption that postpartum conditions solely affect women, prevalence estimates of paternal postpartum depression (PPPD) are comparable with those of women. Similar to mothers, men experience significant biological and psychosocial changes following the birth of a child that contribute to the onset of postpartum depression. A growing body of research has identified many potential variables related to PPPD, yet there is no …

Dynamics Of Interal Phosporus Cycling In A Highly Eutrophic, Shallow, Fresh Water Lake In Utah Lake State Park, Utah, Usa, Sheena Marie Smithson Aug 2020

Dynamics Of Interal Phosporus Cycling In A Highly Eutrophic, Shallow, Fresh Water Lake In Utah Lake State Park, Utah, Usa, Sheena Marie Smithson

Theses and Dissertations

Eutrophication is an increasing global concern as human effluent saturates lakes with an over abundance of nutrients. Phosphorus, generally being the limiting nutrient, is often the most impactful, allowing cyanobacteria populations to grow out of control leading to harmful blooms that can produce cyanotoxins, anoxic lake conditions, and mass fish kills. Utah Lake, a shallow highly eutrophic fresh water lake located in central Utah Valley, has experienced these harmful algal blooms for the last several years. The internal phosphorus cycle is a significant driver in Utah Lake's eutrophication, as the sediments act as both a sink and a source for …

Characterization And Optimization Of An Image Charge Detector For The Measurement Of Martian Dust, Jace Rozsa

Theses and Dissertations

Image charge detector (ICD) technology has existed for decades. However, not until recently has an ICD been proposed for use in space exploration, specifically for studying the characteristics of the dust on Mars. Characterizing the dust on Mars is crucial for designing equipment to aid manned missions. It also improves our understanding of Mars' climate and weather systems. An ICD utilizing printed circuit board (PCB) electrodes, coupled with a custom differential amplifier, is best suited for this type of measurement because of its light weight, simplicity, and noise performance. The noise floor of our particular amplifier is measured to be …

Analysis Of Olfactory Mrna Cap Modifications Using Rnaseh And Lc-Ms, Ilinca M. Giosan

Theses and Dissertations

In the olfactory system, olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) express odorant receptors (ORs) in a singular fashion through unknown mechanisms. Published data supports the notion that singularity is achieved, in part, through a modification the mRNA strand, perhaps in its 5’cap region. This theoretical study aims to test this 5’cap hypothesis.

Vegetation Phenology As A Function Of Plant Functional Type And Urbanization, Ryan Lennon Aug 2020

Vegetation Phenology As A Function Of Plant Functional Type And Urbanization, Ryan Lennon

Theses and Dissertations

Urban land cover contributes to higher temperatures in urban areas compared to adjacent rural areas, which can cause an earlier start of the growing season for urban vegetation. Variations in plant community characteristics between urban and rural areas also produce intra-urban differences in vegetation phenophases, although few studies have investigated differences in phenology between plant functional types in multiple urban environments. In this study I used an exploratory analysis based on the Landsat Phenology Algorithm and weather station data to quantify differences in leaf-onset dates for different plant functional types in the New York City Metropolitan Area. The results demonstrate …
