The Impact Of An Inclusive Curriculum On Attitudes Toward Sexual Minority Populations, Kirstin Kaylene Johnson
The Impact Of An Inclusive Curriculum On Attitudes Toward Sexual Minority Populations, Kirstin Kaylene Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
The current study examined changes in heterosexual individuals’ attitudes toward sexual minority populations when exposed to inclusive curriculum materials. Participants were randomly assigned to receive one of two sets of curriculum materials (i.e., inclusive or non-inclusive). Inclusive materials provided representation of sexual minority individuals, whereas the non-inclusive materials provided representation of only heterosexual individuals. Participants completed a survey that included measures of attitudes toward sexual minority individuals before and after exposure to the curriculum. Hypotheses that individuals exposed to inclusive curriculum would have improved attitudes towards sexual minority individuals from pre-test to post-test were not supported. The hypothesis that several …

Is Variability In Inhibition-Related Neural Activation After Sleep Restriction Associated With Eating Behavior In Adolescents?, Kimberly A. Barnett
Theses and Dissertations
The primary aim of the present study was to evaluate whether intra-individual variability in inhibition-related neural activation in response to sleep restriction is associated with eating behavior in adolescents aged 12-18 years. In addition, the potential moderating effects of sex and body mass index on the association between sleep and variability in neural activation were examined. This study employed a within-subjects crossover design that randomized subjects to both a 5 hours per night (sleep restricted) and 9 hours per night (well-rested) sleep condition for 5 nights, with experimental conditions separated by four weeks. On the 6th day of each study …
The Use Of Nonword Repetition Tasks In The Assessment Of Developmental Language Disorder In Bilingual Children, Kirsten Kelly
The Use Of Nonword Repetition Tasks In The Assessment Of Developmental Language Disorder In Bilingual Children, Kirsten Kelly
Theses and Dissertations
To address the needs of the growing number of Spanish-English bilingual children in the United States, Nonword Repetition (NWR) tasks were created to reduce testing bias in the assessment and diagnosis of children with developmental language disorder (DLD). Several studies have shown promising results in the use of NWR tasks; however, fewer studies have addressed questions such as the use of different scoring methods or analyzing error patterns. Thus, this study was conducted to address these gaps in the research. An English and a Spanish NWR task were administered to 26 Spanish-English bilingual school aged children (6;0-9;4). Two different scoring …

Trading The Days Vs. Days Of Trading: An Empirical Literature Survey On Calendar Anomalies Across Markets, Mariam Ashraf Kiryakos
Trading The Days Vs. Days Of Trading: An Empirical Literature Survey On Calendar Anomalies Across Markets, Mariam Ashraf Kiryakos
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis provides a comprehensive theoretical and empirical review of over five decades of research on two of the most examined calendar anomalies: the day-of-the-week and weekend effect. The expansive literature is classified into five different phases to demonstrate and review the evolution of research on these two seasonal anomalies. It also reconciles empirically the seemingly contradicting evidence documented by prior studies by adopting the lens of Adaptive Market Hypothesis (AMH) and conducting a cross-market analysis on the two calendar anomalies using the headline stock market indices of the ten largest economies by GDP as of 2019. The main methodology …
Impact Of Second Language Acquisition On Cerebral Matter In Adult Monolinguals, Benjamin D. Jorgensen
Impact Of Second Language Acquisition On Cerebral Matter In Adult Monolinguals, Benjamin D. Jorgensen
Theses and Dissertations
Second language acquisition has proven to impact the brain in many ways. Studies have shown a distinct difference between the monolingual and the bilingual brain. These structural differences have included an observable increase in cortical thickness in bilingual individuals when compared to monolinguals. This is a significant observation since many neurological diseases and impairments have been connected to a decrease in cortical thickness. However, previous studies have focused solely on bilinguals who had acquired their second language early on in life. These studies have failed to focus on the potential impact that could be observed on the cortical thickness of …
Zero-Energy Tuning Of Silicon Microring Resonators Using 3d Printed Microfluidics And Two-Photon Absorption Induced Photoelectrochemical Etching Of Silicon, Kevin Eugene Larson
Zero-Energy Tuning Of Silicon Microring Resonators Using 3d Printed Microfluidics And Two-Photon Absorption Induced Photoelectrochemical Etching Of Silicon, Kevin Eugene Larson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents a novel method of modulating silicon photonic circuits using 3D printed microfluidic devices. The fluids that pass through the microfluidic device interact directly with the silicon waveguides. This method changes the refractive index of the waveguide cladding, thus changing the effective index of the system. Through using this technique we demonstrate the shift in resonant wavelength by a full free spectral range (FSR) by increasing the concentration of the salt water in the microfluidic device from 0% to 10%. On a 60 μm microring resonator, this equals a resonant wavelength shift of 1.514 nm when the index …
Racist Securitization Of Refugees, Syrian Refugees In Lebanon: A Case Study, Hind Alhelou
Racist Securitization Of Refugees, Syrian Refugees In Lebanon: A Case Study, Hind Alhelou
Theses and Dissertations
With the growing rates of involuntary (forced) migration and even traditional migration (movement from one country to another in search of work opportunities, better lifestyle, study, etc.); the movement of these bodies raises their vulnerability to be constructed as threats. The same threat they are fleeing from is being attached to them as they attempt to seek security elsewhere. This intersection of migration and securitization studies especially emerged because of the interconnectedness of the world that is majorly facilitated by globalization.
Within this context, this thesis examines how Syrian refugees in Lebanon are racialized because of a securitization process perpetuated …
Behavioral And Neural Correlates Of Sensory Processing And Anxiety In Autistic Children, Kelsey Lee Ustach Tindall
Behavioral And Neural Correlates Of Sensory Processing And Anxiety In Autistic Children, Kelsey Lee Ustach Tindall
Theses and Dissertations
Children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are known to experience higher levels of sensory processing differences as well as anxiety, compared to the neurotypical population (NT). Both theory and evidence suggest that there is an interrelationship between sensory processing, anxiety and fear, and prediction abilities in autism. However, much more remains to be discovered about their relationship and especially underlying neural mechanisms. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to examine the behavioral relationship between sensory processing, fear and anxiety, prediction, and related brain activity in autistic children. To this end, 30 autistic children (ages 6-11 years) and …
Taxonomy And Phylogenetics Of Island Damselflies (Odonata: Coenagrionidae: Vanuatubasis), Natalie Anne Saxton
Taxonomy And Phylogenetics Of Island Damselflies (Odonata: Coenagrionidae: Vanuatubasis), Natalie Anne Saxton
Theses and Dissertations
Odonata is an order of charismatic insects, commonly called dragonflies and damselflies, that provide a rewarding study system to answer questions such as those related to diversity and biogeography. Despite being relatively well-studied compared to other insect orders, odonates have suffered from inconsistencies and disagreements about proper morphological terminology that provide barriers to incoming workers. These disagreements have subsequently led to confusion and the incorrect application of terms. Here, we clarify the terminology and propose standard terminology for terminal appendages. This terminology is employed in a taxonomic revision of Vanuatubasis Ober & Staniczek, 2009. This endemic genus of damselfly found …

An Eye-Movement Examination Of Gender Stereotype Processing, Elva Adriana Garcia
An Eye-Movement Examination Of Gender Stereotype Processing, Elva Adriana Garcia
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the present study investigates how bilinguals comprehend gender, especially when one of their languages is grammatically marked in gender. This study explored influences of world knowledge, lexical representations, and language activation in a bilingual population. Eye-movements were recorded as bilinguals read sentences containing gender-stereotyped nouns (e.g., surgeon) followed by a male or female pronoun (he/she) that served as an anaphoric referent. Language dominance in Spanish and English dominant and balanced bilinguals, the gender of the stereotype noun (i.e., female or male), and congruency between noun and anaphor (match or mismatch) were included as variables. The following eye …
What Factors Contribute To A Murder Case Being Designated As A Cold Case?, Claudia Yvette Ortiz
What Factors Contribute To A Murder Case Being Designated As A Cold Case?, Claudia Yvette Ortiz
Theses and Dissertations
Homicide is the most serious form of crime and unfortunately, if you are murdered in America, there is a one in three chance that the police will not identify your killer (Kaste, 2015). Unsolved homicide cases are often referred to as “cold cases.” Very little is understood about cold cases and the circumstances under which a case may go “cold”. To investigate the characteristics of cold cases, data from one of the largest cities in Texas (Houston) will be used to compare similarities and differences from Houston’s cleared homicide cases and cold cases. The factors that are the focus of …
Minimal Genomes Simplify The Analysis Of Biological Relationships In Medicine, Taxonomy, Ecology, And Astrobiology, Rafael Deliz Aguirre
Minimal Genomes Simplify The Analysis Of Biological Relationships In Medicine, Taxonomy, Ecology, And Astrobiology, Rafael Deliz Aguirre
Theses and Dissertations
As humans, we continuously thrive to determine meaningful biological relationships between living things on the basis of specific characteristics. Taxonomy is the science that studies these connections for the purpose of naming and grouping organisms as well as identifying logical clusters (i.e, clade). Its origin may be traced as far back as ancient Greece and beyond, and while we explore species diversity, most of our attention focuses on the biomedical and ecological applications of taxonomy. The contemporary taxonomical revolution began with Carl Linnaeus. He established the principles of binomial nomenclature and taxonomical hierarchy that we employ now. Relationships were later …

Therefore, many studies are now focusing on the bacteria that belong to the human gut microbiota. One such bacterium is named Morganella morganii. M. morganii is a gram-negative rod shaped bacterium that belongs to the Enterobacteriaceae family. It is a highly adaptive species of bacteria that …
Generation Of Antibiotic Resistant Mutants In The Minimal Pathogen Mycoplasma Pneumoniae, Bryant De Jesus
Generation Of Antibiotic Resistant Mutants In The Minimal Pathogen Mycoplasma Pneumoniae, Bryant De Jesus
Theses and Dissertations
Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MPN) causes community acquired pneumonia (CAP). The inability to identify M. pneumoniae infections through common clinical screenings has added to the global antibiotic resistance problem. MPN characteristically lacks a cell wall, which prevents proper diagnosis in an infected patient. This has led to the inappropriate prescriptions of antibiotics at insufficient dosages, allowing these microorganisms to thrive at sub-lethal concentrations. The small genome size of MPN, makes it a viable candidate for studying and developing tools to understand the genetic mechanisms behind the acquisition of antibiotic resistance by microbes. This study aimed to generate MPN mutants through prolonged exposure …

Impact Of Intracellular Glutathione Depletion On Neutral Sphingomyelinase In Human Hepatoma Hepg2 Cells, Marie Tanios
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been increasing dramaticallyandliver cancer is the fifth most common cancer globally. Increasing sphingomyelin (SM) hydrolysis via activation of the cell surface membrane-associated neutral sphingomyelinase (nSMase) has been linked to cell proliferation and apoptosis. Glutathione (GSH) depletion was reported to mediate induction of apoptosis via nSMase activation. On the other hand, other studies reported that GSH protected cancer cells against apoptosis. We hypothesized that GSH synthesis inhibition with buthioninesulfoximine (BSO) increases HepG2 cell proliferation. Objectives: The aim of the current study wasto investigate the effect of GSH depletion using BSO on HepG2 cell proliferation …

On Fabric, Feminism And Faulty Legal Systems: Iran’S 1979 Revolution And Its Politics Of Touch, Zeena Amin
On Fabric, Feminism And Faulty Legal Systems: Iran’S 1979 Revolution And Its Politics Of Touch, Zeena Amin
Theses and Dissertations
The intersection of body and state is a fascinating phenomenon of modern-day politics. We are continuously subjected to the ingeniousness with which the ruling classes monitor and regulate our bodies; and most times we are not even aware of it. Whether it is for control over resources or political power and authority, the state uses its institutions and various tools available to it for the purpose of maintaining disciplined, uniform populations that could otherwise threaten prevailing power structures. In particular, the patriarchy has perpetuated the notion that a woman’s body is a specific threat to those prevailing power structures. This …

Theses and Dissertations
Stock market manipulation detection is important for both investors and regulators. Being able to detect stock manipulation and preventing it gives investors the confidence in the market fairness and integrity. It also helps maintaining liquidity of the stocks and market efficiency. Implementing data mining algorithms in manipulation detection is a relatively recent technique but in the past few years there has been an increasing interest in it's applications in this domain. The benefit of monitoring manipulative trade behavior is that it can be implemented on live feed of stock data, which saves a lot of time in detecting stock price …
Adjudicating Patriarchy In The Nationality Law, Muhammed Samy Ahmed Mr.
Adjudicating Patriarchy In The Nationality Law, Muhammed Samy Ahmed Mr.
Theses and Dissertations
The Egyptian legal structure has long discriminated against women. Taking nationality law as an example, it is obvious that all consecutive nationality laws have ignored women’s right concerning passing on and acquiring nationality. Even after its amendment in 2004, major gender discrimination still exists. This is caused by the fact that the nationality law is only a part of the legal system. Consequently, its essence will not deviate from the patriarchal composition of the overall nature of the legal system. This paper argues that the existing forms of discrimination in the nationality law correlate with the broader legal environment. Hence, …
