The Neuroprotective Role Of Vitamin D In Humans With A Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review, Hailey Jarr
The Neuroprotective Role Of Vitamin D In Humans With A Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review, Hailey Jarr
Theses and Dissertations
Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are a leading cause of death worldwide. Previous research supports a relationship between vitamin D and TBI outcomes; however, they rely on animal studies. This review aimed to examine the neuroprotective role of vitamin D in humans with TBIs. A search was completed (PubMed and Scopus) following PRISMA guidelines to review publications investigating the relationship between vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and TBI or the effect of vitamin D supplementation on TBI outcomes; 8 studies were identified. Patients had the
/="/">following ranges: 26-88% deficiency and 62-88% insufficiency compared to 24% and 49% of the general population. …
Patterns Of Distribution And Dispersion Of Silver Carp In An Oxbow Lake, Jordan Besson
Patterns Of Distribution And Dispersion Of Silver Carp In An Oxbow Lake, Jordan Besson
Theses and Dissertations
Oxbow lakes are highly productive waterbodies that host multiple life stages of many freshwater aquatic species. Oxbow lakes also provide habitat to Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), which has enabled populations to grow and expand within the United States. Silver Carp are undesirable because they can compete for resources with native fishes. My goal was to identify patterns of distribution and dispersion of Silver Carp in Moon Lake, Mississippi, to assist and inform precise harvesting of fish. I implanted thirty-five adult Silver Carp with acoustic tags that I released into Moon Lake. I observed that Silver Carp were disproportionately …
Identifying Limitations In Using Diagnostic Testing For Absorption Of Passive Maternal Immunity In Neonatal Beef Calves To Predict Pre-Weaning Disease, Alexis Charlotte Thompson
Identifying Limitations In Using Diagnostic Testing For Absorption Of Passive Maternal Immunity In Neonatal Beef Calves To Predict Pre-Weaning Disease, Alexis Charlotte Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
Calves are born agammaglobulinemic and rely on colostrum consumption for the transfer of maternal passive immunity. Calves that fail to absorb adequate amounts of maternal antibodies from colostrum are commonly referred to as having failed transfer of passive immunity (FTPI). The overall aim of this dissertation was to explore the usefulness of FTPI testing in neonatal beef calves to predict their risk for subsequent illness or death. The objectives were to evaluate the impact of FTPI on pre-weaning disease in beef and dairy calves, quantify and compare the variance in IgG concentrations measured by radial immunodiffusion and serum total protein …
The Influence Of Marsh Edge And Seagrass Habitat On Summer Fish And Macroinvertebrate Recruitment To A Northern Gulf Of Mexico Coastal System, Rebecca Lea Gilpin
The Influence Of Marsh Edge And Seagrass Habitat On Summer Fish And Macroinvertebrate Recruitment To A Northern Gulf Of Mexico Coastal System, Rebecca Lea Gilpin
Theses and Dissertations
Marshes and seagrass beds have been widely recognized as important habitat for estuarine species, but less has been done on how these habitats interact and function together, thereby limiting understanding of the variability of juvenile recruitment to coastal systems. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the interaction between fringing marsh and adjacent seagrass for the provision of habitat for juvenile nekton. Weekly seine net and benthic seagrass core sampling from June to November 2020 determine the relationship between nekton and marsh-edge and seagrass habitat. This study shows disparate results, in terms of the effects of proximity to …
Analysis Of Gene Evolution In The Long-Lived Heliconius Butterfly Genus, Leann Ward
Analysis Of Gene Evolution In The Long-Lived Heliconius Butterfly Genus, Leann Ward
Theses and Dissertations
The butterfly genus Heliconius has an unusually long lifespan (six to eight months compared to only several weeks) and the unique ability to feed on pollen. The additional amino acids provided by a pollen diet seem intrinsically tied to longer lifespan in Heliconius. Because of these traits, Heliconius may be a valuable model species for future aging studies. As a preliminary analysis, we investigated differences in gene evolution between Heliconius and seven short-lived butterflies. We observed that the Heliconius genes had significant differences in evolutionary rates, in the direction of selection, and in the amounts of site-specific positive selection compared …
An Investigation Into Transcription Fidelity And Its Effects On C. Elegans And S. Cerevisiae Health And Longevity, Olivia S. Dinep-Schneider
An Investigation Into Transcription Fidelity And Its Effects On C. Elegans And S. Cerevisiae Health And Longevity, Olivia S. Dinep-Schneider
Theses and Dissertations
mRNA molecules form an intermediate in the transfer of sequences from DNA to ribosomes in order to guide protein production. Errors can be introduced into mRNA, producing aberrant proteins which place a strain on cellular regulatory machinery, causing increased risks of apoptosis, cancer, and decreased fitness. These errors may be introduced due to decreased transcriptional proofreading capabilities, exposure to chemicals, or mistakes in RNA editing machinery. It is important to investigate these causes of transcription errors to better understand the long-neglected area of mRNA fidelity which has such significant impacts on our cellular functions. In this paper, it was determined …
Determining The Importance Of Propagule Pressure And Dispersal Mechanisms For The Establishment And Spread Of Crapemyrtle Bark Scale, Acanthococcus Lagerstroemiae Kuwana (Hemiptera: Eriococcidae), Erika Renee Wright
Theses and Dissertations
Non-native scale insects can be economically and ecologically important pests of urban forests. Crapemyrtle bark scale (CMBS), Acanthococcus lagerstroemiae Kuwana (Hemiptera: Eriococcidae), is a scale that causes declines in plant vigor for a popular ornamental tree in the southeastern United States, crapemyrtle (Lagerstroemia spp.). CMBS has spread rapidly throughout the Southeast and, more recently, into the Middle Atlantic. Despite problems associated with CMBS, important aspects of its ecology, such as the role of propagule pressure in establishment and the relative importance of mechanisms for between-tree dispersal, are not well-understood. We used field and laboratory studies to investigate these aspects of …
Roles Of Limestone Particle Size Ratios And Phytase Levels On Performance, Eggshell Quality, And Bone Health In Post-Peak And Late-Lay Single-Cycled W-36 Laying Hens, Charis Waters
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to investigate the role of fine (F) and coarse (C) limestone ratios and exogenous phytase at standard and superdosing activity on performance, egg quality, and bone quality of post-peak and late-lay Hy-Line W-36 hens. For post-peak, treatments with 40F:60C at 0 and 400 FTU/kg (standard phytase activity) increased hen-day egg production (HDEP). Treatments with 15F:85C decreased feed intake (FI) but also increased unsaleable eggs (UE) and eggshell-breaking strength (EBS). Treatments with 0 and 400 FTU/kg increased albumen quality and treatments with 1500 FTU/kg increased bone quality and phytate breakdown. For late-lay, interaction effects of …
Remote Physiological Monitoring Of The Giant Panda And Red Panda Using Near Infrared Spectroscopy And Machine Learning, Qingyu Sheng
Remote Physiological Monitoring Of The Giant Panda And Red Panda Using Near Infrared Spectroscopy And Machine Learning, Qingyu Sheng
Theses and Dissertations
Appropriate conservation decisions and efforts must be based on real−time and accurate information about wildlife populations. However, it is extremely challenging to monitor the population demography and physiological traits of many threatened and secretive animal species through direct observation and capture. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has the potential to be a remote tool to address questions concerning wildlife physiology and demography by analyzing “signs” of animals without seeing or capturing them. In this dissertation, two species, the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) and red panda (Ailurus fulgens) are used as a case study, to demonstrate NIRS’ feasibility …
Assessment Of Leguminous Cover Crops For Use In Saccharum, Dylan Mathis Hollowell
Assessment Of Leguminous Cover Crops For Use In Saccharum, Dylan Mathis Hollowell
Theses and Dissertations
Cover crops play a part in improving sustainability by reducing negative environmental impacts such as soil erosion and nutrient runoff. Energycane could benefit from cover crops due to its row spacing. This study was conducted at the Bearden Dairy Research Center to determine differences in nitrogen accumulation, weed suppression, and energycane yield among treatments. Four cool-season species (planted in the fall of 2020 and 2021) [balansa clover (Trifolium michelianum), hairy vetch (Vicia villosa), white clover (T. repens) and winter pea (Pisum sativum subsp. arvense)], and four warm-season species (planted in the …
Wildfire-Altered Geotechnical Soil Properties And Their Impact On Subsequent Landslides, James M. Kellogg
Wildfire-Altered Geotechnical Soil Properties And Their Impact On Subsequent Landslides, James M. Kellogg
Theses and Dissertations
Wildfires result in altered landscape as well as altered soil properties. Wildfires result in conditions that are more susceptible to geotechnical hazards introducing a potential for cascading events in the surrounding area. Shallow landslides are common geohazards that result in a post-wildfire landscape. With an ever-increasing trend in wildfires, the need to better understand the impact wildfire-altered soil properties play on shallow slope instability is critical to evaluating risks to existing or planned development, mitigation of potentially hazardous conditions, prioritization of post-wildfire planning, and post-wildfire response preparation. The primary objective of this study is to provide a comprehensive overview of …

Inline Real Time Moisture Sensing For Gin Cotton, Lucas Gay
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to assess the performance of a capacitive sensor in measuring moisture content of cotton within the moisture range of 6-13%. The assessment was conducted in two phases: static and dynamic. During the static phase, models to predict moisture content were created and a 95% Confidence Interval of [-0.619,0.619], Percent Residual Accuracy of 97.586%, and a mean error of 4.396% were achieved. The Bland-Altman plot yielded a curve with a slight positive trend, suggesting the data could be modeled more appropriately by multiple models. The dynamic phase saw similar results as the static tests in …

Northern Bobwhite (Colinus Virginianus) Breeding Season Calling Behavior And Roost Site Selection In A Working Agricultural Landscape In Clay County, Mississippi, Olivia A. Lappin
Theses and Dissertations
Research on northern bobwhite calling behavior and roosting ecology during the breeding season has received limited attention. However, variability in calling rate in response to conspecifics and environmental factors may affect avian monitoring strategies. We conducted 10-minute breeding season surveys (April-August) on B. Bryan Farms, Mississippi, from 2021-2022 to evaluate the impact of conspecifics and environmental covariates on male bobwhite calling rate. We observed a positive linear effect of conspecifics and temperature on calling rate. We did not find sufficient evidence to support a relationship between calling rate and cloud cover or barometric pressure. We also analyzed breeding season third-order …
Evolution And Epidemiology Of Channel Catfish Virus (Ccv), Arun Venugopalan
Evolution And Epidemiology Of Channel Catfish Virus (Ccv), Arun Venugopalan
Theses and Dissertations
Channel catfish virus disease (CCVD) is the principal viral disease in the United States catfish industry. The CCVD is caused by channel catfish virus (CCV), with mortality reaching up to 100% in fingerlings. CCV is assigned taxonomically to the family Alloherpesviridae, genus Ictalurivirus, species Ictalurid herpesvirus 1 (IcHV-1). To date, virulence, immunogenicity, and genome plasticity of the CCV field isolates have not been investigated. Three genotypes of CCV (IcHV-1A, IcHV-1B, and BCAHV) were identified using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. Virulence assessment of three representative isolates of RFLP groups suggests that IcHV-1B (pooled survival [mean ± SE]: 58.3% ± …

Design And Synthesis Of Donor-Acceptor-Donor Xanthene-Based Near Infrared I And Shortwave Infrared (Swir) Dyes For Biological Imaging, Chathuranga Rathnamalala
Theses and Dissertations
Small molecule organic dyes with absorption and emission in the near infrared region (NIR) attracted much attention for various applications such as dye sensitized solar cells, fluorescent guided surgery, stimuli responsive bioimaging and photodynamic therapy. Dyes with high absorption and emission in the NIR region are beneficial for stimuli responsive bioimaging due to the deeper penetration of NIR light, less cell damage, high resolution, and low background autofluorescence from biomolecules. Of the many small molecule dyes, xanthene-based dyes exhibit outstanding photophysical properties and good stimuli response for use in bioimaging applications. However, absorption and emission of the xanthene dyes lie …
Automated Mapping Of Oblique Imagery Collected With Unmanned Vehicles In Coastal And Marine Environments, Jacob B. Freeman
Automated Mapping Of Oblique Imagery Collected With Unmanned Vehicles In Coastal And Marine Environments, Jacob B. Freeman
Theses and Dissertations
Recent technological advances in unmanned observational platforms, including remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS), have made them highly effective tools for research and monitoring within marine and coastal environments. One of the primary types of data collected by these systems is video imagery, which is often captured at an angle oblique to the Earth’s surface, rather than normal to it (e.g., downward looking). This thesis presents a newly developed suite of tools designed to digitally map oblique imagery data collected with ROV and sUAS in coastal and marine environments and quantitatively evaluates the accuracy of the …

Macroecological Patterns Of Frugivorous Fishes’ Diversity (Serrasalmidae) In The Amazon Drainage Basin, Karold Vivianna Coronado Franco
Theses and Dissertations
The Amazon River drainage basin is known as the most biodiverse region in the world. Regarding freshwater fish, this region contains around 15% of the world's fish richness. The fish family Serrasalmidae have a variety of feeding preferences including Pacus (herbivores) and Piranhas (carnivores). Fruit eating fish species are evolutionarily the oldest species in the family and have a mutualistic interaction with flooded forests. Considering the diversity of feeding habits of the Serrasalmidae family, it represents an excellent model to study ecological questions related to factors that influence the spatial distribution of species and factors that contribute to the maintenance …
The Response Of An Avian Community To Intercropping And Forest Management Practices In A Private Working Pine Forest, Rebecca Doyne Bracken
The Response Of An Avian Community To Intercropping And Forest Management Practices In A Private Working Pine Forest, Rebecca Doyne Bracken
Theses and Dissertations
Within managed pine forest systems, a plethora of bird species exist throughout the lifecycle of a stand akin to what may be experienced through post-disturbance regeneration in a natural forest system. I sought to address how breeding avian communities shift across time in response to stand aging and forest management, evaluate species-specific responses to stand conditions, investigate the responses of at-risk avian species to forest management, and determine avian non-breeding, over-wintering presence in a managed loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) forest. I conducted breeding bird point count and vegetation surveys within five stands of privately owned and managed pine forest in …

The Influence Of Overwatering, Underwatering, And Waterlogging On The Growth Of Kale (Brassica Oleracea Var. Acephala), Skyler R. Brazel
Theses and Dissertations
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has predicted that there will be increases in precipitation and heat-induced drought events globally. Information on kale response to waterlogging is minimal. The purpose of this project was to identify the response of kale to three treatments of water stress: underwatering, overwatering, and waterlogging. Plant pigments analyzed displayed a varied response to underwatering and overwatering, with concentrations changing with maturity but with reductions and no changes, respectively, at full harvest maturity. Glucosinolate concentrations were also influenced by maturity and increased under waterlogging and underwatering but no differences with overwatering. Overall, water stress to any …
Surface Modification Of Wood Using Nano-Sized Titania Particles Coated By Liquid-Precursor Flame Spray Pyrolysis, Ganesh Sedhain
Surface Modification Of Wood Using Nano-Sized Titania Particles Coated By Liquid-Precursor Flame Spray Pyrolysis, Ganesh Sedhain
Theses and Dissertations
Wood is a renewable resource and versatile material used in tasks ranging from tools and furniture to advanced engineering structures. Although wood is light, mechanically robust, environmentally friendly, and abundant, some inherent properties of wood, such as degradation due to moisture and UV radiation from sunlight, are less desirable for extended service life and dimensional stability. In this dissertation, a novel surface modification of wood is explored by depositing nano-sized titania particles on wood veneers and cross-laminated timber (CLT) blocks by liquid-precursor flame spray pyrolysis to confer reversible wettability switching and enhanced durability to UV irradiation. The reaction between a …

Compromised Health: Examining Growth And Health In A Late Antique Roman Infant And Child Cemetery, Sierra Malis
Theses and Dissertations
This research examines the relationship between growth, growth disruption, and skeletal indicators stress amongst juveniles (n=60) interred at the Late Antique infant and child cemetery at Poggio Gramignano (PG) (ca. 5th century CE), associated with a rural agricultural community. Growth disruption – evidenced by decreased long bone length compared to dental age – and stress experience – evidenced by skeletal stress indicators – were compared to those within juveniles from two urban Roman-era cemeteries (n=66), Villa Rustica (VR) (0-400 CE) and Tragurium City Necropolis (TCN) (400-700 CE). Results indicate that the PG juveniles had significantly smaller femoral lengths-for-age than VR …
Evaluating The Utility Of Trial-Based Functional Analyses Of Inappropriate Mealtime Behavior: A Comparison Of Identified Functions Across Functional Analysis Methods, Meredith Huff Staggers
Evaluating The Utility Of Trial-Based Functional Analyses Of Inappropriate Mealtime Behavior: A Comparison Of Identified Functions Across Functional Analysis Methods, Meredith Huff Staggers
Theses and Dissertations
A critical first step in addressing problem behavior is to identify the function of the problem, or reason for engaging in the problem behavior, using systematic assessment procedures known as a functional analysis (FA). The literature consistently demonstrates the effectiveness of FAs, and variations of FAs (e.g., trial-based functional analysis [TBFA]) for assessing a variety of topographies of problem behaviors across populations, age groups, and settings; however, the use of TBFAs for assessing the function of inappropriate mealtime behavior (IMB) has been documented in the literature only once. The purpose of the current study was to contribute to the research …
Predicting How Science Self-Efficacy And Identity Contributes To Postsecondary Stem Degree Selection, Bo Jason Hayes
Predicting How Science Self-Efficacy And Identity Contributes To Postsecondary Stem Degree Selection, Bo Jason Hayes
Theses and Dissertations
One of the earliest indications that a student may be interested in STEM paths is the students’ own self-efficacy for science as well as how they may see themselves in a STEM career as part of their science self-identity (Schlegel et al., 2019). Currently, there is a need to contribute to research that can assist agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Education and the National Academy of Sciences in advising the nation, including high schools and postsecondary institutions on ways to increase the enrollment of students in STEM-related careers. This study examined the extent to which …
Host-Acquired Virus Genes Support An Ancient Antiviral Role Of The Pirna Pathway In Dipterans, Rebecca Christian
Host-Acquired Virus Genes Support An Ancient Antiviral Role Of The Pirna Pathway In Dipterans, Rebecca Christian
Theses and Dissertations
Endogenous viral elements (EVEs) have been recently investigated as a source of transgenerational immune memory. These “viral fossils” are abundant in Aedes mosquitoes and partner with the host’s primary antiviral defense system, the RNA interference (RNAi) pathways. This partnership appears unique to mosquitoes, which encode an expansion of the Piwi endoribonucleases. To interrogate EVE-Piwi partnerships and their role in antiviral defense, I performed a comparative small RNA analysis of two naturally occurring EVE-virus pairs – one in the mosquito Aedes albopictus, and one in the midge Chaoborus americanus. Both express an EVE related to the nucleoprotein of their …
Developing Genotypic And Phenotypic Systems For Early Analysis Of Drug-Resistant Bacteria, Yesman Akuoko
Developing Genotypic And Phenotypic Systems For Early Analysis Of Drug-Resistant Bacteria, Yesman Akuoko
Theses and Dissertations
Antimicrobial resistance in bacteria is a global health challenge with a projected fallout of 10 million deaths annually and cumulative costs of over 1 trillion dollars by 2050. The currently available tools exploited in the detection of bacteria or their DNA can be expensive, time inefficient, or lack multiplex capabilities among others. The research work highlighted in this dissertation advances techniques employed in the phenotypic or genotypic detection of bacteria and their DNA. In this dissertation, I present polymethyl methacrylate-pressure sensitive adhesive microfluidic platforms developed using a time-efficient, inexpensive fabrication technique. Microfluidic devices were then equipped with functionalized monoliths and …

The Major Choice Experience And Motivation Of Women Who Are Nontraditional Students In Male Dominated Majors, Erin Flowers
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to describe the major choice experience and motivation of nontraditional female students in male dominated majors. A transcendental phenomenological method was used to answer the central research question: how do women who are nontraditional students enrolled in male dominated majors at two-and four-year institutions of higher education perceive and describe their experience and motivation when choosing their major? Semi-structured interviews were conducted with women who are nontraditional students in male dominated majors and, after analysis of that data, six themes emerged. One key finding of this study is the major choice experience for women …
Dad Talk: Father-Child Communication When A Parent Has Cancer, Elizabeth A. Reed
Dad Talk: Father-Child Communication When A Parent Has Cancer, Elizabeth A. Reed
Theses and Dissertations
Most individuals are impacted by a cancer diagnosis, in fact 54% of Americans say they or someone in their immediate family has been diagnosed with cancer at some point (CBS Interactive, 2017). While most Americans have a family member with cancer, most research has been done to understand the mother-daughter relationship during such a time. Unfortunately, there is little research regarding father-child communication during a cancer diagnosis, and father-child communication is understudied. The father-child dyad is an important relationship that impacts a child throughout their lives (Fellers & Schrodt, 2021). To further understand these relationships and how cancer may impact …
The Role Of Developmental Stage, Compensatory Support, And Coping In The Relationship Among Adverse Childhood Experiences, Mental Health, And Resilience In Emerging Adults, Melanie Abbondola
The Role Of Developmental Stage, Compensatory Support, And Coping In The Relationship Among Adverse Childhood Experiences, Mental Health, And Resilience In Emerging Adults, Melanie Abbondola
Theses and Dissertations
Children and adolescents who experience adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) often must deal with mental and physical effects lasting well into adulthood. However, much research shows ACEs are related to poorer mental and physical health in adulthood. Much less work has focused on the psychological and social resources that can create resilience. This study examined how compensatory social support and coping strategies potentially moderate the relationship between ACEs and mental health outcomes, and if the age/developmental stage at which the ACEs occurred, and the frequency and intensity of the ACEs affected mental health. Self-report data were obtained from 241 emerging adults, …
