Development Of Bifunctional Peptides As Scaffolds For Bifunctional Catalysis And A Novel Method Of Peptide Stapling Using Squaric Esters, Adam X. Wayment
Theses and Dissertations
Enzymes are some of nature's most powerful tools in chemical processes. However, their molecular complexity makes them difficult to synthesize and complicates their application in traditional organic synthesis. Peptides, a building block of enzymes, can be rapidly synthesized and have been used as a possible alternative in achieving enzyme-like catalysis. However, most peptide-based catalysts are limited in reaction-scope and are unable to incorporate traditional organic catalysts. We have designed a helical peptide scaffold capable of being functionalized with a wide variety of organocatalysts as well as transition-metal based catalysts. In order to understand how the peptide structure effects reactivity and …
Ecological Drivers Of Plasticity And Parental Care In Poison Frogs, Olivia Brooks
Ecological Drivers Of Plasticity And Parental Care In Poison Frogs, Olivia Brooks
Theses and Dissertations
Parents increase their offspring fitness prospects by providing care, but at the cost of lost current or future reproductive opportunities. Parents often rear multiple offspring simultaneously, and because parents cannot supply unlimited care to their offspring, parents benefit from distributing resources non-randomly within a brood. Having access to information that helps inform allocation decisions can be valuable to parents, and parents may use a variety of information types that are either intrinsic or extrinsic to the offspring to help inform these decisions. Here, I explore the types of information that parents use when allocating resources within broods, and I explore …
Ecosystem Services Provided By The Novel Winter Cash Cover Crop, Pennycress, Ryan Thomas Meyer
Ecosystem Services Provided By The Novel Winter Cash Cover Crop, Pennycress, Ryan Thomas Meyer
Theses and Dissertations
Nutrient loss from agricultural practices in the Midwest contributes to degradation in ecosystem structure and function. Subsurface drainage systems in tilled corn-soybean rotations that rely on fertilization results in up to 50% of fall fertilizer being lost to the environment. Solutions are needed to reduce nutrient pollution from Midwestern agriculture. Cover crops are a best management practice that shows potential to reduce nutrient loss from Illinois farms. However, due to economic concerns, cover crop usage in Illinois is low (6%). A novel winter oilseed, pennycress, has the potential to act both as a cover crop and a cash crop, benefitting …
Deciphering How Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli Defends Itself Against The Neutrophilic Oxidant Hypochlorous Acid, Sadia Sultana
Deciphering How Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli Defends Itself Against The Neutrophilic Oxidant Hypochlorous Acid, Sadia Sultana
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this dissertation was to investigate how uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) responds to and defends one of the most potent oxidants produced in neutrophils, hypochlorous acid (HOCl).While most bacteria have no negative effect on human health or are even beneficial, some pathogenic species can cause serious infections, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality. However, the immune system allows the host to efficiently fight back and eradicate pathogens. Innate immune cells (i.e., neutrophils) generate reactive oxygen and chlorine species (RO/CS) to kill invading pathogens, among which HOCl is considered the most potent and abundant one. HOCl exerts its bactericidal …

The release of plutonium and other actinides into the environment following a nuclear detonation or accident, poses a health risk to biological systems. The spread, or transportation of that plutonium and its daughter products through environmental and meteorological means increases the potential affect and inherent danger within the surrounding area. In the 1960’s, a study was conducted in a joint effort by the US and Great Britain to collect information regarding the spread of plutonium released into the environment through a sub-critical detonation. Soil samples from these tests were collected by the USAF in 2015, approximately 50 years after these …
On Intrinsic Dimensionality Of Data Sets And Neural Networks, Ori Chachmo
On Intrinsic Dimensionality Of Data Sets And Neural Networks, Ori Chachmo
Theses and Dissertations
The concept of Intrinsic Dimensionality (ID) is of special interest in the field of Neural Networks (NNs) since it promotes both (a) a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms, and (b) embraces parsimonious modeling (that is, building the right-sized model for the task) with associated benefits to processing speed and storage requirements. This thesis explores the concept of ID via two separate, but related, questions. First, we study the potential of NN ID prediction by exploiting easily obtained quantities measured on the data. We then explore NN ID as an independent concept by comparing the results of different methods for …

Bayesian Augmentation Of Object Detection Algorithms To Enhance Object Classification Stability, Taylor D. Markham
Bayesian Augmentation Of Object Detection Algorithms To Enhance Object Classification Stability, Taylor D. Markham
Theses and Dissertations
Neural networks, despite their prowess in computer vision, often exhibit "flickering". Flickering occurs when networks fail to maintain consistent object representation across frames, leading to inaccurate and inconsistent output. This problem is particularly critical in mission-surety applications where reliable object recognition is crucial. This research presents a novel approach that combines existing object detection and tracking algorithms like YOLO and SORT with a Bayesian backend model. This Bayesian backend incorporates probabilistic reasoning to analyze the network's confidence in its predictions and infer the most likely object identity across multiple frames, effectively reducing flickering and enhancing robustness.
