Erosion And Sedimentation In Lake Ashtabula, Southeastern North Dakota, Darryll T. Pederson

Erosion along the shore of Lake Ashtabula and nearshore and offshore sedimentation were studied from May 1969 to December 1970. The lake, located in the southeastern part of North Dakota, was formed when the Baldhill Dam stopped the flow of the Sheyenne River in 1950. Maximum depth of the lake is 45 feet in the inundated river channel immediately above the dam. The lake is 27 miles long and ranges in width from 1/3 to 1/2 mile.

Shoreline erosion, measured at stations located at 100-foot intervals around the margins of the lake, was found to be a major source of …

The Cass River drainage basin is in the Southern Alps in the central part of the South Island of New Zealand. The Alps are composed of complexly folded greywacke which is still actively rising. The basin has been modified by several glacial advances during Pleistocene time.

The Cass basin has a temperate climate characterized by a steep precipitation gradient. Its vegetation includes plants of the forest grassland, shrubland, swamp, rock, and river-bed associations.

The Cass basin may be divided into four geomorphic areas: bedrock areas, high-angle fans, moderate-angle fans, and a low-angle fan. The bedrock areas consist of fractured greywacke; …

The results of this chapter lead to a modification of the standard stopping rule which breathes new life into the method of steepest ascent, but which is unfortunately not sufficient to effect a total resuscitation. As expected, there is no uniformly optimum stopping rule, nor even a uniformly best test statistic; both the optimum statistic and the optimum test level depend on the model parameters y1 and y2. One can, however, adopt a compromise rule which works reasonably well for all parameter combinations by testing at the 25% level with the statistic zn = 1/2(yn -yn-2). In many cases the …

A Survey Of Cross Country Programs And Training Methods In Canadian Colleges And Universities, David W. Guss

The purpose of this study was to determine current practices and training methods in cross country programs in selected Canadian colleges and universities. Questionnaires were sent out to forty-six colleges and universities, and 38, or 82.6 percent, were returned. Twelve, or 31.5 percent, of the schools indicated that they had no cross country program.

The questionnaire was used to provide general information, reveal policies and practices, determine how athletes were trained and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the cross country programs in these selected Canadian colleges and universities.

A study of the nesting and brood habitat preferences of sharp-tailed grouse (Pedioecetes phasianellus jamesi Lincoln) was conducted in southwestern North Dakota during the reproductive seasons of 1969 and 1970. Radio telemetry was used to monitor the spring and summer activities of seventeen sharp-tail hens. Eight brooding hens were semi-continuously radio-tracked for movement and cover selection. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of seventeen nests and eight renests was made to determine the preferred nesting cover and the effects of intensive grazing upon it .. A Flora From The Dakota Sandstone Formation Near Westwater, Grand County, Utah, Samuel R. Rushforth

A cretaceous (Cenomanian) flora from the Dakota Sandstone Formation near Westwater, Grand County, Utah contains an admixture of ferns and angiosperms. The ferns of this flora are representative of an older Jurassic-Wealden vegetational type, whereas the angiosperms are typical of the modern vegetational type. Species of Gleichenia and Matonidium and Astralopteris coloradica represent the dominant forms in this flora. The Westwater flora contains fourteen genera including nineteen species and one variety. New species described from this flora include Asplenium dakotensis, Coniopteris westwaterensis and Ilex serrata.

A balance of iodine within the rats is important for the maintenance of normal thyroid function. Because of Hymenolepis d[imi]nuta's affinity for certain nutrients, it may upset norma[l] iodine balance in the rat. To determine this, tapeworm-infected and non-infected rats were given 125Iodide orally and the percent uptake of iodide by the thyroid and the amount of radioac[tiv]ity in the tapeworms was determined. The percent distribution of the radio-iodinated compounds in the thyroid, tapeworms and feces was also determined. These procedures were repeated except 125Thyroxine was administered orally. A study was made of the postulated fission-inhibiting substance located in the cephalic region of Dugesia dorotocephala. Rearing decapitated planaria in four different concentrations (25, 50, 75 or 100 ug/ml) of head or whole body extract resulted in a positive correlation between the inhibition of fission rate and the concentration of extract. The difference in inhibitory activity between the two types of extracts was three percent at maximum. The inhibitory substance was partially inactivated at 60° C. There was a direct correlation between the length of time that the extract was heated and the inactivation of inhibitor. The active substance …

Weevil species assigned to the genus Tychius Germar, 1817, have been described from North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. The majority of approximately 266 species occur in the Mediterranean region (Klima, 1934). Fourteen native and one introduced species are known to occur in North America.

The purpose of this study was to investigate parental attitude in regard to several areas in physical education and athletics in the Harvey High School.

The questionnaire-opinionnaire technique was used for obtaining the data. Copies of the opinionnaire were mailed to l£0 parents, and a return of 111 questionnaires, or 74 percent, was received.

A brief summary of the findings show:

1. Parents believed an adequate job of teaching physical education is being done today.

2. Parents believed their children are receiving a better training in physical education now than when the respondents attended school.

Tissue thiamin diphosphate was assayed enzymatically utilizing purified brewer's yeast apotransketolase. With this assay ten uumoles of thiamin diphosphate could be detected. Total thiamin was fluorometrically measured. For one to three days rats were placed under conditions of stress, consisting of loud noise treatment, emotional stress, deprivation of paradoxical sleep, and swimming to exhaustion, respectively. The body weight was markedly decreased at the end of the respective experimental periods except with the loud noise treated group, compared with the corresponding controls. Age and growth and other biological characteristics of goldeye were compared at five widely separated stations on Garrison Reservoir in 1968 and 1969. All samples were collected with experimental gill nets fished near the surface. In 1968, goldeye comprised 88.56 percent of the total catch of 1,381 and in 1969, they made up 94.42 percent of the total catch of 2,230 fish. It was found that growth patterns of goldeye at the various stations were statistically different, which may be attributed to the differences in turbidity, temperature and possibly other limnologic conditions. Atrazine (2-chloro-4, ethylamino-6-isopropylaminos- triazine) applied to Hordium vulgare L. variety barbless in low concentrations (0.001, 0.01, 0.1 uM) was shown to in--­ crease the activity of D-ribulose-1, 5-diphosphate carboxylase (RuDPCase) and phosphoribulokinase (PRuK) up to 23% and 30% respectively and increase the amount of chlorophyll and extractable protein up to 18% and 21% respectively over the control plants. These results indicate that sub-toxic levels of atrazine significantly stimulate plant growth. Barley plants given higher concentrations of atrazine (1.0 and 10 uM) showed up to a 78% and 42% decrease in the activity of RuDPCase and PRuK respectively as well as …
