The purpose of this study was to investigate the notification process for defective medical materiel within the Department of Defense. The study first evaluated the efficiency of the current notification process for defective medical materiel within the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Second, a streamlined notification process and tri-service Type 1 message for defective medical materiel was developed. Finally, the effectiveness of this tri-service message was evaluated in comparison to the current notification messages used by the three services. Investigations using observational studies revealed duplication of both function and resources among the medical logistics offices of the three services. Through …

Fine-grained, organic-rich sediments are a potentially importment reservoir for nutrients and contaminants in the Indian River Lagoon, Florida. However, little is known about the behavior of these chemical species and whether they can be released to the overlying water column. 5,424 Japanese prisoners were captured by Allied forces during World War II and brought to the United States for internment. No scholarly account has been written of these men. This thesis will explain why there were so few, where they were interned, and the conditions of their internment.

The topic was researched at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D. C., through interviews with veterans who served in the Pacific Campaign or had contact with the Japanese prisoners, through newspaper and magazine articles of the time, and through secondary sources of the Pacific Campaign.

The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between locus of control and alcoholism. The questions which this study sought to address included a comparison of locus of control in inpatient and outpatient white male treatment groups with a nonalcoholic control group. In addition changes in locus of control during alcohol treatment were also assessed.

A total of 129 white men were placed into one of three groups. Thirty-one men from the community who scored within the nonalcoholic range on the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) made up the control group. Two groups of men in treatment for alcoholism …

The goals of this study were (1) to verify calibration factors determined by previous experiment for relating counts from activated gold foils to neutron fluences, and (2) to use the method to determine neutron fluences under various operating conditions of the Varian Clinac 1800 (18-MeV) electron accelerator at the WPAFB Medical Center. For comparison similar measurements were made of the CGM Saturne 1 at Kettering Memorial Hospital, Dayton, Ohio. The purpose of this study was to investigate curricular patterns for general education requirements in elementary teacher education during the period 1970-1990 and to examine the general education of elementary education seniors at the University of North Dakota in 1987-88 within the framework of changing views of the purposes of general education in teacher education.

Students were selected randomly from a list of seniors majoring in elementary education, elementary/early childhood education and elementary/special education during spring semester of 1988. This qualitative study focuses on five prospective female teachers' attitudes toward mathematics. The meanings each informant ascribes to her experiences surrounding mathematics are described in this work. Each informant was interviewed weekly during her senior mathematics methods course and observed and interviewed weekly throughout her student teaching experience. Interviews were open-ended and was the central focus of methodology. A field diary was used to record the reflective portions of field notes.

This study examined the relationships between previous school and life experiences of pre-service elementary school teachers at the University of North Dakota and their attitudes toward science and science teaching.

The study incorporated both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The first six pre-service teachers from one of the science methods class who volunteered were selected for taped private interviews. The classification of forward looking infrared (FLIR) imagery is explored using Gabor transform decomposition and relative locations of non- homogeneous regions combined with feedforward neural networks. A feature saliency metric is developed from a Bayesian sensitivity analysis of feedforward neural networks. This metric is then used to reduce the dimensionality of the feature vectors used to identify FLIR imagery without any degradation of classification accuracy. Several system architectures are developed using a roving window combined with a series of Gabor filters to produce feature vectors for presentation to a neural network classifier. A system to do a large scale survey was developed. The data obtained from the survey was analyzed using a database. The database incorporated an equation for converting cpm into radon concentration pCi/ℓ). The equation of conversion, protocol for measuring radon concentration, survey form, and a database program were modified (from previous theses) or developed for this thesis. Pulsed electromagnetic fields (EMF) and electric fields have been demonstrated to promote osteogenesis and wound healing. Pulsed EMF's have been approved since 1979 by the FDA, and are highly effective in the treatment of non-union fractures. Increased linear growth, cellular proliferation, cAMP and uptake of tritiated thymidine have been documented on short term exposure. Yet the mechanisms have been difficult to quantify. A Study Of The Relationship Of Maternal And Child Risk Factors To Development And Low-Income Status In Grand Forks County., Kay Elizabeth Campbell

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between maternal and child risk factors and the variables of development, low-income status, and multiple births. The sample consisted of 193 children referred to the North Dakota Early Childhood Tracking System in Grand Forks County from 1988 to mid-1991. The referral criteria were based on established, biological, and environmental risk factors. The correlation between development and risk factors was not significant. Low-income status was significantly correlated to maternal risk factors (p $<$.001), short term respiratory problems (p $<$.05), neonatal risk factors (p $<$.05), and single parenthood (p $<$.001). Multiple births were significantly correlated to neonatal risk factors (p $<$.05) and prematurity (p $<$.001).

Spousal Bereavement In The Second Year: Differences In Bereavement Outcome Among The Rural And Urban Elderly., Laurie Ann Brustad

Twenty-five bereaved rural elderly subjects (10 males, 15 females) were compared with twenty-five bereaved urban elderly subjects (16 females, 9 males) in the second year after the death of a spouse. All subjects were drawn from a Hospice population. The rural elderly were found to have higher levels of depression, unresolved grief, and poorer health than the urban elderly as measured by the Multiscore Depression Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Wahler Physical Symptoms Inventory, and the Texas Revised Inventory of Grief. Multiple regression analyses revealed that several variables influenced scores on the outcome measures. Depression scores were best predicted …

Previous studies suggested that teniposide is a strong clastogen, and that the DNA breakage effect of this drug is mediated by the nuclear enzyme topoisomerase II. Ripley et al found evidence for a correspondence between sites of acridine-induced frameshift mutations in bacteriophage T4 and sites of in Vitro DNA cleavage by T4 topoisomerase II. To identify the sequence specificity of teniposide-induced deletion and insertion mutations in mammalian cells, the CHO-D422 cell line, which is hemizygous at the aprt locus, was employed in this study. This study utilized a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design that compared the effect of body position changes on arterial oxygen saturation in obesity as measured noninvasively by pulse oximetry. The null hypothesis, that there would be no difference between oxygen saturation values measured by pulse oximetry with position change from sitting to supine in obese subjects as compared to nonobese subjects, was tested. Fourteen obese, American Society of Anesthesiologist (ASA) physical class status II subjects and 14 nonobese ASA physical class status I subjects were included in the sample population. The theoretical framework was Rokeach's (1973) Theory on the Nature of Human Values and Value Systems. Biological denitrification controls nitrate distribution in the Elk Valley aquifer, which underlies approximately 725 square kilometres of northeastern North Dakota and provides drinking water for farms and rural communities in the area. Increased irrigation has raised concerns over potential contamination from agricultural practices. The purpose of this study was to establish the role of biological denitrification in minimizing concentration and distribution of nitrate and to determine the effect irrigation practices have on groundwater flow and nitrate distribution in the saturated zone.
