The degree to which elementary teachers of North Dakota perceived the "scientific attitudes" aspect of science as an important goal to foster in relation to fostering scientific products and scientific processes was examined. Elementary teachers' receptivity to changing the emphases placed on these aspects of science in their grading practices was documented. The teachers' demographics, science teaching practices, and perceived needs for additional learning related to the different aspects of science, pedagogy, and assessment also were surveyed.A survey instrument developed by the researcher was mailed to 995 elementary teachers in North Dakota. The purpose of this study was acquiring direction for developing science instructional material for early childhood special education teachers. The collateral problems were determining what science topics are preferred, what the impediments are for science teaching, and in what format the instructional material should be prepared.This study also assessed the needs and availability of science instructional material for early childhood special education teachers. Cellular Precursors Supporting Coronary Vessel Vasculogenesis In The Embryonic Quail Heart., Ann Marie Valder

Little is known concerning origins of vascular precursors and associated regulatory mechanisms involved in intramural coronary vessel vasculogenesis occurring in the subepicardial space of the embryonic vertebrate heart. This process appears to derive from reciprocal tissue interactions between the myocardium, dorsal mesocardium (DM) and continuous epicardium. Epicardial formation in the Japanese quail was investigated using scanning and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy, and light microscopy (LM). In situ indirect immunocytochemistry was utilized with monoclonal antibodies specific for cellular fibronectin, endothelial, and vascular smooth muscle precursors. The antibody QH1 (Peault et al., 1983) is specific for quail endothelial and hematopoietic cells, and …

Teaching Accommodation Task Skills: From Human Demonstration To Robot Control Via Artificial Neural Networks, Paul V. Whalen

A simple edge-mating task, performed automatically by accommodation control, was used to study the feasibility of using data collected during a human demonstration to train an artificial neural network (ANN) to control a common robot manipulator to complete similar tasks. The 2-dimensional (planar) edge-mating task which aligns a peg normal to a fiat table served as the basis for the investigation. A simple multi-layered perceptron (MLP) ANN with a single hidden layer and linear output nodes was trained using the back-propagation algorithm with momentum. This thesis develops a methodology to evaluate how dissimilar military systems support the accomplishment of the United States? counterproliferation objectives. The overall scope is to develop a model of the counterproliferation decision process that enables systems to be evaluated against common criteria. By using decision analysis, an influence diagram model is developed which represents military activities in the counterproliferation process. The key questions which must be asked in evaluating counterproliferation systems are highlighted. An analysis of perfect intelligence, perfect defensive, and perfect offensive systems reveal that a perfect intelligence system provides the greatest potential to meet the United States' counterproliferation …

This thesis applies neural network feature selection techniques to multivariate time series data to improve prediction of a target time series. Two approaches to feature selection are used. First, a subset enumeration method is used to determine which financial indicators are most useful for aiding in prediction of the S&P 500 futures daily price. The candidate indicators evaluated include RSI, Stochastics and several moving averages. Results indicate that the Stochastics and RSI indicators result in better prediction results than the moving averages. Modified Kolmogorov- Smirnov (KS), Anderson-Darling (AD), Cramer-von Mises (CV), Kupier (V), and Watson (W) goodness-of-fit tests are generated for the inverse Gaussian distribution with unknown parameters. The inverse Gaussian parameters are estimated by maximum likelihood estimation. A Monte Carlo simulation of 50,000 repetitions is used to generate critical values for sample sizes of 5 through 50 with an increment of five, sample sizes of 60 through 100 with an increment of 10, and 24 different values of the inverse Gaussian shape parameter. A 50,000-repetition Monte Carlo power study is carried out using data with sample sizes of 5 through 100 …

This thesis describes the development of a methodology to explicitly model corps artillery assets in the Joint Staff's Joint Stochastic Analysis Research (J-STOCHWAR) and to quantify Army doctrine that guides organization of artillery for combat. The methodology incorporates corps artillery into the J-STOCHWAR by using the five fundamentals for organizing for combat, which reflect Army doctrine, and combines them with basic concepts already used in existing theater-level models. Other aspects of the problem include determining the appropriate level of detail, identifying techniques to solve the problem, and verifying the results. The purpose of this study was to investigate a method for improving undergraduate science education. The method investigated is called link-teaching. It is the linking of a core science class with a writing class, with the topics covered in the science class being the same topics used for the writing assignments in the writing class. For the purpose of this study a physics class (Natural Phenomena) and an astronomy class were both linked with expository writing classes.The research was done in the context of two theories of learning, Ausubel's Assimilation Theory and Gowin's Theory of Education. Attorney and judicial attitudes towards expert witnesses in child custody cases were investigated by a cross-sectional research design. Subjects consisted of a sample of 381 of all attorneys and judges in the Commonwealth of Virginia who wished to be certified as guardians ad litem. Subjects were asked to fill out a six page questionnaire immediately prior to a daylong certification training session. The sample was primarily white (85.2%) and male (57.7%). Information was gathered on the subjects' demographic characteristics, experience with and attitudes toward expert witnesses in custody cases, opinions on traditional court and family structures, and knowledge of developmental …

Previous studies have shown that naticid gastropod predators are highly selective of prey species in accordance with the Kitchell et al. (1981) cost-benefit model. In addition, earlier studies have demonstrated selectivity of drillhole siting and intraspecific prey size. This study focuses on prey selectivity by Oligocene naticid gastropods and is used to test Vermeij's (1987) hypothesis of escalation. The hypothesis of escalation states that biologic hazards have increased during the Phanerozoic and that organisms have either had to adapt to these hazards or face possible extinction (Vermeij, 1987). Naticid predation on molluscan assemblages is one of several examples used to …
