The United States Air Force is in the process of implementing GeoBase, an initiative to change how geospatial information resources are being acquired, implemented, exploited, and sustained on USAF installations around the world. Using GeoBase increases situational awareness and minimizes decision risk for all installation personnel GeoBase is a geographic information system, using commercial-off-the-shelf software to provide one source for spatial information on an installation. GeoBase uses imagery as one layer of information. The accuracy of the imagery directly impacts the effectiveness of GeoBase. Of the over 17,000 DoD sites that potentially require remediation, sites containing soil and groundwater contaminated by energetic compounds are prevalent (Larson et al., 2001). Production of energetics such as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), hexahydro-1,3,5 - trinitro- 1,3,5 -triazine (RDX), and octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro- 1,3,5,7-tetrasocine (HMX) for use in munitions has created a DoD-wide problem due to improper disposal techniques (Price et al., 2001), Nitro aromatic compounds (NACs) similar to those used in explosives can also be found in insecticides, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, dyes, plastics, and many other commonly used products. The red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis) is classified under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 as an endangered species As such, the red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW) is afforded strict protection in an effort to return the RCW population to a self-sustainable level. Endemic to southeastern United States mature pine forests, the presence of the RCW impacts the operations of many Department of Defense (DoD) installations. A particular challenge in sustaining what are often small populations of RCW at these locations is the loss of genetic variation due to genetic drift. Satisficing was introduced by the economist Herbert Simon to allow for decisions that are "good enough" when there are insufficient computational resources and knowledge to obtain the optimal outcome. Autonomous multi-agent systems often require such decision making because of the complexity and unknown factors present in such an environment. Satisficing has been extended significantly by Wynn Stirling. Through extended satisficing, he has departed from conventional approaches to autonomous multi-agent systems, based as they usually are on the assumption that each participant is motivated exclusively by its own self interest, and will therefore attempt to maximize its benefit, regardless of the …

This dissertation is focused on the stereoselective synthesis of β- C-glycosides. C-glycosides, including, glucose derivatives, possess a broad array of physiological activity, e.g., enzyme and platelet aggregation inhibition, antibacterial, antitumor and antiviral activity. These carbohydrate derivatives are also important chiral precursors in synthesis of natural products. During recent years, C-glycosides have generated interest as stable mimics of O-glycosides. Numerous synthesis routes have been reported for C-glycosides. However, their stereoselective preparation remains a challenge. Two approaches for the stereoselective preparation of β-C-glucosides was achieved using sulfur-stabilized intermediates. The collagenous network of the extracellular matrix (ECM) contributes to the strength and organization of connective tissues. Interspersed among this collagenous network, are a number of tissue specific proteoglycans (PG's) that are thought to guide matrix assembly and organization through protein/protein and/or protein/carbohydrate interactions. In recent literature, attention has been focused on a small leucine rich PG family (SLRPS) found to bind a variety of ECM components via their core proteins. The family is made up of nine members including: decorin, biglycan, lumican, fibromodulin, proline arginine end leucine rich repeat protein (PRELP), keratocan, chondroadherin, epiphycan, and osteoglycin. The purposes of this single subject study were (a) to create a profile of the undecided student in regard to academic and career direction and (b) to explore the effectiveness of self-assessment tools as aides for the undecided student. An undergraduate student, who voluntarily came to a Career and Academic Planning Center, was chosen based upon (a) her declaration of being undecided regarding the direction of academic and career pursuits and (b) her willingness to explore self-assessment tools. The purpose of this single subject study was to compare best practice and normative practice in the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and Mild Mental Retardation. A client from a community-based agency was used in the study. The client was an African American woman who resided in a low socioeconomic area and whose income was below the poverty line. The client experienced emotional, physical, and psychological abuse and neglect during childhood. She presented with symptoms of depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, basic coping skills and parenting skills. Outcome data was obtained through interviewing and observations. Changes in scleral extracellular matrix, which is composed of proteins including glycoproteins, proteoglycans, and collagen, allow axial elongation of the eye resulting in myopia. Theoretically, changes in any scleral component could result in changes leading to increased axial length. The present study was designed to assess the validity of the White Racial Identity Attitude Scale (WRIAS: Helms & Carter, 1990) and Modem Racism Scale (MRS: McConahay, Hardee & Batts, 1981) in the prediction of discriminatory behavior. These measures were hypothesized to predict prejudiced behavior associated with simulated criminal sentencing as reflected in the Criminal Justice Questionnaire (CJQ) developed for purposes of the present study. The CJQ was administered on two occasions separated by a one month interval. While electronic structure methods that are able to describe accurately excited states exist (e.g., MRCI), they are often prohibitively expensive for all but the smallest systems (i.e., up to three atom systems with a moderate-sized basis set). This is because the inclusion of dynamic electron correlation, which is necessary for obtaining accurate energies and often required for obtaining reliable geometries, is computationally demanding. Since reactions typically involve more than three atoms, techniques able to describe excited states and include dynamic correlation in a much more computationally reasonable fashion than MRCI are highly desirable. Physics is fundamental for science, engineering, medicine, and for understanding many phenomena encountered in people’s daily lives. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between student success in college-level introductory physics courses and various educational and background characteristics. The primary variables of this study were gender, high school mathematics and science preparation, preference and perceptions of learning physics, and performance in introductory physics courses. The purpose of this study was to identify those factors that affect the social integration of Hispanic adolescents in a predominately white public school. The sample includes seventh through twelfth grade students (N = 954) in two school districts located in small size Midwest cities. Subjects completed a questionnaire about themselves, their family and their educational experiences. Survey items specifically addressed the student’s sense of belonging to the school environment, their perceptions o f peers and school staff, their social involvement in school-sponsored activities, substance use, and experiences of being bullied. The location and function of the electron transport chain render the mitochondria the primary source for potentially damaging reactive oxygen species in aerobic cells. Normally, the concentration of superoxide anion in mitochondria is controlled, at least in part, by the sequential action of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. However, when the terminal steps of the electron transport are impaired or inhibited, superoxide anion production may rise to levels that overwhelm the normal protective enzymes. Studies have shown that copper deficiency causes a reduction in the activity of cytochrome-c oxidase, the copper dependent, terminal respiratory complex of the electron transport chain. …

The Effect Of Aposematic Coloration On The Food Preference Of Aphelocoma Coerulescens, The Florida Scrub Jay, Mary Elizabeth Hill

Aposematic coloration, commonly observed in noxious organisms, serves as a warning to predators to avoid attacking specific prey. This coloration is conspicuous in nature, with one of the most common examples being a red and black pattern. The plant Abrus precatorius exhibits this warning signal in its seeds, which resemble lady beetles and contain the concentrated toxin abrin. Aphelocoma coerulescens, an endemic and federally threatened bird in the state of Florida, shares a similar distribution with Abrus precatorius, making interaction between the two species possible. The purpose of this study was to examine and compare education levels, intelligence quotients, and college courses taken or are being taken by criminal offenders who commit violent versus nonviolent crimes. One hundred males and 100 females from the states' correctional facilities were used as the sample. The sample was stratified according to four characteristics: type of crime committed (violent or nonviolent), ethnicity, age, and gender. George Pepperdine College, a Church of Christ affiliated institution of higher education in Los Angeles, California, had its foundation rocked in the 1960s by two events: The Watts Riots of 1965 and the 1969 shooting of Los Angeles youth, Larry Donnell Kimmons. These events challenged the original commitment that founder George Pepperdine had for the Los Angeles area and forever changed the future direction of George Pepperdine College (GPC). The Watts Riots served as the catalyst, generating a desire by the executive administrators of GPC to leave the perceived chaotic and unpredictable urban setting.
